Free OSR - The Fantasy Trip: Melee

Yep! The Fantasy Trip: Melee is quite possibly the Pocket Game that proved the popularity of pocket games. The seeds that turned into GURPS in the end. If you want a quick game of physical fighting, here's your opportunity. Grab some d6 and have at it!

A classic game of fantasy combat. Create characters in just a few minutes – then send them into the arena. Winners become stronger and faster for the next battle. Losers die.

Each counter in this fast-moving game is a single warrior. Players choose weapons and tactics for their fighters, and send them into combat against men, beasts, or monsters – to victory, or death.

This is the basic combat system for The Fantasy. Trip For the basic magic system, pick up Wizard. For ready-to-use adventures perfect for solo or group play, check out Death Test. Free OSR - Melee (The Fantasy Trip)

I've agreed to run a session of the Fantasy Trip at NTRPG 2024 in June of next year, so I need to tighten up my rules knowledge. Well, color me surprised to find Melee, the combat rules of The Fantasy Trip for Free at DTRPG in PDF. Woot!

Bundle of Holding - The Fantasy Trip (Steve Jackson Games)

The Fantasy Trip Bundle presents The Fantasy Trip, the tabletop roleplaying game designed by Steve Jackson in its 2018 Legacy Edition from Steve Jackson Games.

The Fantasy Trip is one of the few early RPGs I didn't encounter in my early days in the hobby. I was lucky enough to get an early copy of the Kickstarter Boxed Set directly from Phil Reed of Steve Jackson Games a few months before I got my Kickstarter copy. It was an impressive box. Reading The Fantasy Trip, you can see the roots of GURPS in its design.

You can snag The Fantasy Trip Core Collection for 14.95, but for less than 26 bucks as I type this, you can grab the Bonus Collection, which is a huge bargain.

This all-new TFT Bundle brings you a Cidri-sized lineup for an unbeatable bargain price. For just US$14.95 you get all four titles in our Core Collection (retail value $47) as DRM-free ebooks. The star attraction is the mammoth The Fantasy Trip Legacy Edition that includes Melee, Wizard, In the Labyrinth, both Death Test solo adventures, the dungeon crawl Tollenkar's Lair, and tons of extras. You also get the solo adventure Red Crypt and two play aids: the Labyrinth Planner and Deluxe Character Journal.

The Fantasy Trip CompanionAnd if you pay more than the threshold price of $25.58, you'll level up and also get our entire Bonus Collection with four supplements worth an additional $57, including The Fantasy Trip Companion, TFT Adventures Volume 1, The Book of Unlife, and the first issue of the Fantasy Trip magazine, Hexagram.

Day 4 of OSR Christmas gifts will be given out tomorrow, Tuesday 11/20. So you get a few extra hours to comment ;)

Kickstarter - Character Collections for The Fantasy Trip

Let me start by saying I've known Douglas Cole for a number of years, and he was one of the regular players in my "B Team" Swords & Wizardry Campaign about six years ago. I may just be a bit biased, but Doug has been producing top-level RPG products since Dungeon Grappling - the only usable iteration of unarmed combat for any version of Dungeons &Dragons or its clones I've ever come across. It is simply that good.

Bad Mike & I grabbed Doug earlier tonight for the weekly Talking Crit Livestream, and Doug had some solid advice for new Kickstarter creators. If you prefer an audio-only feed, here's the podcast version.

So, what's so great about Character Collections for The Fantasy Trip? Quite simply, the character descriptions are inspirational and essentially systemless. How do I know? Doug was kind enough to give me a peek at the first three Character Collections and they look awesome.

Heck, I'm tempted to break out my The Fantasy Trip boxed set and run a few sessions via VTT. As an improv style GM, Character Collections simply is an amazing resource for my personal toolbox, regardless of the game system I'm running.

You can snag Character Collections for The Fantasy Trip for as little as 10 bucks in PDF, which will include at least 3 books - and possibly more if stretch goals are hit. Interestingly, stretch goals are not reached by hitting certain dollar values raised, but by the number of backers. So get the word out, as I want more books like the first three Character Collections.

Kickstarter - The Fantasy Trip: The Book of Unlife & Red Crypt

New books for The Fantasy Trip! A guide to many of the known kinds of unlife and a new solitaire adventure. Choose one or choose both!

Not all Kickstarters are suffering during the Pandemic. The Fantasy Trip: The Book of Unlife & Red Crypt is successfully funded with 10 days to left.
The Book of Unlife includes 44 creatures for The Fantasy Trip (visit the official website), a guide to the general powers and vulnerabilities of the unliving, and a complete adventure setting, The Haunting of Holner House.
Red Crypt is a programmed adventure for a single character. It is designed for The Fantasy Trip: In The Labyrinth (available in both hardcover and print-on-demand softcover). If you instead have both Melee and Wizard, you can still play, with a few simplifications.
This adventure establishes locations, gives you decisions to make, and tells you the outcomes of those decisions. You will need six-sided dice, a straightedge, and scratch paper, along with counters and megahex tiles.

New Third Party Titles Released for The Fantasy Trip (Gaming Ballistic)

Imagine my surprise when I opened up the DriveThruRPG page to find that Gaming Ballistic had released some The Fantasy Trip adventures.

I knew that Douglas Cole, the man behind Gaming Ballistic had intentions to do so, but I had no idea they were being released so soon. The titles are:

Curse of the Pirate King (by Christopher R. Rice and J. Edward Tremlett) 3.99
The expedition seems simple: travel to the former capitol of a vast pirate nation, and find the fabled Blade of Dawn. This “straight-forward” mission is complicated by several factors:
  • A long-ago betrayal brought a centuries-long curse upon the realm of the Pirate King and his island fortress.
  • The island is far from uninhabited . . . though few walking its lands are properly described as living
  • The players must discover how death has found a way to bring strange “life” to the isle of the pirate king
All the party has to do is go to the lifeless rock, and loot the treasure of a thousand dead buccaneers. What could go wrong? This quest follows the events of Crown of Eternity with that powerful organization now working against the players.
The last page of the adventure contains 42 print-them-yourself tokens for monsters and NPCs that appear in the adventure (in black-and-white).
Crown of Eternity (by Christopher R. Rice and J. Edward Tremlett) 3.99
The party is tasked with finding a lost researcher for an exclusive league of magical explorers. The lost eldritch archaeologist was in search of the fabled Crown of Eternity.
This is a quest adventure, with the following goals:
  • Bring back the explorer . . . dead, alive, maybe a bit of both
  • Cross a vast ocean, a treacherous desert, and a poisoned sea, beset from ahead and behind by competing factions and dire threats
  • The party must succeed where a rival daredevil failed: find the Crown of Eternity, snatching it from his grasp if necessary
This is a patronage quest, and introduces the Indhyna League, a mysterious and well-funded group of treasure-seeking mages and scholars. They very much have their own agenda.
The last page of the adventure contains 42 print-them-yourself tokens for monsters and NPCs that appear in the adventure (in black-and-white).
 Vampire Hunter Belladonna - Double-sized Programmed Adventure - 5.49
You are Belladonna, the young maid and cook at Castle Ironskull—moonlighting as a
vampire slayer!
Years ago, the sinister Lord Adrik Blackbird turned your best friend into a vampire. For their own good, you had to stake them both! Somehow, you succeeded—but while those vampires perished, they had already infected others. The bloodsuckers will spread like a plague through the local countryside—unless you hunt them down!
Play as the lethal maid Belladonna (wielder of silver stakes and deadly poisons), or as your own vampire slaying hero or wizard. Travel through the villages and wilderness near Ironskull Castle, hunting vampires (and possibly other monsters). During your quest, you may uncover disturbing rumors of the rise of a new and terrifying master vampire, and the arcane relic they seek. Can you find it first?
Vampire Hunter Belladonna is a programmed adventure for The Fantasy Trip. You won't need a Game Master—instead a system of branching paragraphs directs you from encounter to encounter as you make your own choice. You resolve combat or other encounters using the TFT rules.
In this double-sized 32-page adventure, you will find:
Over 200 paragraphs detailing wilderness and village encounters.
  • Multiple new monsters (not just vampires!) and magic items.
  • A "sandbox" wilderness setting that can reward multiple plays.
  • A choice of using the included pre-generated characters or your existing PC.
  • 42 "print your own" 1" square counters for use on tactical maps for the adventure
VAMPIRE HUNTER BELLADONNA is an independent adventure, but it has ties to IRONSKULL CASTLE, so you can use both together in a campaign if you wish. If you think of it as "Vampire Hunter B," we won't mind that either.
The adventure is also available as an offset-print, saddle-stitched softcover printed on 85#/128gsm paper through the Gaming Ballistic website.
I may just be inspired to run some TFT in the New Year. :)

You Got Your Fantasy Trip in My Lost Lands - Announcement From Steve Jackson Games and Frog God Games

No foolin' either! When I had lunch with Phil Reed from SJG a month or so ago, I mentioned that there were many backers of The World of the Lost Lands Kickstarter that were posting in the comments that they planned to use the Lost Lands with The Fantasy Trip rules (The Fantasy Trip was a large part of the lunch conversation and I left with a review copy - thanks Phil!) Hopefully I had some small influence in putting this event into motion ;)

Note - there are two days left to support The World of the Lost Lands Kickstarter from FGG.

Frog God Games

STEVE JACKSON GAMES and FROG GOD GAMES are excited to announce a new horizon for The Fantasy Trip! The Fantasy Trip Legacy Box - Photos and First Impressions

Yesterday I met Phil Reed and his assistant Amy (well, way over-qualified to be called an "assistant") for lunch in Manhattan. Lunch was great but what I left with was damn near priceless. One of three copies of The Fantasy Trip Legacy Edition to make it to the states. Kickstarter backers should expect to see theirs in late March or early April.

I plan on bringing this with me to TotalCon. I suspect if you drop by the Frog God booth you may catch a peek of it at some point.

The box is huge. Even the inside of the lid cover has a use (there are instructions on using it to drop dice on various drawings of the hex tiles to make an instant dungeon.) When Phil told me it weighed 8 pounds, he was NOT kidding.

 Aventure time!

I need to unfold the map later and take a pic of it in all of its glory.

 Character sheets

Mini character sheets Oh, and pre-gens.

 Dice and a handy folder.

GM's screen on its side. Grrr. 4 panels and solid.

Hexes for maps - and a dragon too!

Who the hell reads the Read This First first thing? Heh. I had to squeeze other goodies in my may and the sheet got a bit squashed ;)

The following doesn't exist either. Well, just a handful, as its a proof copy of Phil's zine. Half the pages of the final zine, as folks made it bigger and better ;)

Kickstarter - Hexagram #1, an Old-School RPG Zine for The Fantasy Trip (Zine Quest)

I'm enjoying Kickstarter's Zine Quest month. More zines!

This time we are looking at Hexagram #1, an Old-School RPG Zine for The Fantasy Trip. Sure, I'm still waiting on my The Fantasy Trip boxed set, but now it will have a zine companion ;)
Welcome to Hexagram, an old-school RPG zine for The Fantasy Trip that, we hope, won't be a one-and-done project. Starting out as a 16 page (8.5-inch by 5.5-inch) B&W publication, your support has made the zine a reality and, with luck, will push the page count higher and higher as we attract more backers.
(Later note: Up to 24 pages now, and still more than a week to grow.)
What's inside Hexagram? Great stuff, including:
  • "Snackromancer," by Guy McLimore. An encounter for use with The Fantasy Trip.
  • "Overloading a Treasure Chest," by Philip Reed. What goes into packing an 8+ pound roleplaying game boxed set?
  • "Rumors and Truths," by Steven Marsh.
  • "Twenty Terrible Traps," by Steve Jackson. Don't throw away your d20. We have much evil love for it.
  • A preview of our next BIG TFT campaign, with samples!
  • Plus more articles to be determined!
3 bucks for the PDF. 6 bucks plus shipping for the print copy.

As for add-ons, I'm grabbing these:

Kickstarter - Update - The Fantasy Trip – Pocket Box Stretch Goal

Earlier today Steve Jackson Games posted an update to The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter. Below I am sharing the update in full:
More Pages, Random Dungeon Generation, and the Melee/Wizard Pocket Box Stretch Goal
Posted by Philip Reed
$230,000 - We’ll make the font larger, AND make room for a bit more art, by increasing In the Labyrinth to 176 pages.
BGG - 400 Wizard Fans - We will print a random dungeon generation drop table on the inside lid of the Legacy Edition box.
And fantastic timing on unlocking those two goals as we go into the final days of the Kickstarter project! That $230,000 stretch goal falling was a trigger for our team, and we're now ready to reveal the $300,000 stretch goal: An eighties-style Pocket Box combining the Melee and Wizard games, using classic-sized maps and counters, and featuring new cover art by Liz Danforth!
Pocket Box mockup not final. NOTE: The plastic box will be inspired-by the eighties box, not identical to the eighties box.
If met, we will produce this combined Melee/Wizard Pocket Box game and pack it at no extra charge into the I Want It All reward level. And for those of you who need extras, if the Pocket Box is unlocked, we will also open it up as an add-on item.
We're in our final days of the project, so there's not much time left to unlock that $300,000 stretch goal. Please get out there into the wilds of the web and tell everyone about the return of The Fantasy Trip!
- Phil Reed
Well, The Fantasy Trip is currently at $235k. So, the first stretch goal is unlocked. The $300k stretch looks awesome. Screw it, backing at the $110 I Want it All reward level. Curses!

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 92 - The Fantasy Trip to Open Setting to 3rd Parties

Holy crap! So, Rob Conley supplied the question about opening The Fantasy Trip to 3rd Party Publishers. I don't think either of us expected this answer.
Follow up on yesterday's ENnies discussion episode as I answer a voicemail from Glen. Then I discuss Steve Jackson Games opening up the setting for The Fantasy Trip to 3rd Parties. My, the world is a' changing.

Interview with Steve Jackson (SJG) regarding The Fantasy Trip RPG

Before the launch of The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter, I had an email exchange with Steve Jackson (of Steve Jackson Games, not the other one ;) regarding The Fantasy Trip. Steve answered some questions and I suspect some of the answers may lead to questions from my readers. If you do have some questions, leave them in the comments section and I'll forward them to Steve Jackson Games.

Tenkar: Here is the initial round of The Fantasy Trip questions. I expect some answers to generate further questions. There is no specific reason for the order of the questions.

I must confess to not owning a copy of the original rules. Not for lack of interest, simply lack of desire to be shaken down on Ebay.

Steve: Yes, totally understandable.

Tenkar: 1 - Steve, what was your inspiration for The Fantasy Trip? What were you trying to accomplish with the rules when you wrote them?

Steve: For the original Melee, the inspiration was OD&D and I wanted to create a better combat system, for “suits me better” values of better. I like hexes.  For the later material, the inspiration was all the fun we were having playing Melee, and the goal was to see if I could create a coherent but simpler rules system.

Tenkar: 2 - Are you surprised by the amount of nostalgia and love there is for The Fantasy Trip?

Steve: In a word, yes!

Tenkar: 3 - I believe GURPS is an evolution of The Fantasy Trip, much like AD&D was of OD&D, perhaps with more divergence in the case of TFT / GURPS. With the new printing of TFT, will we get to see a “what if" version of The Fantasy Trip if it had been allowed evolve on its own?

Steve: It won’t be the same as 40 years of natural evolution,, but yes, it will at least be a lot like it would have been if I’d had another few months and Metagaming’s print budget had been greater, back in the day.

Tenkar: 4 - Rob Conley raised a question in The Tavern’s weekly voice chat session - Will there be something similar to OneBookShelf's Community Content Program for The Fantasy Trip, so that third-party publishers could publish content for TFT and share the profits with SJg?

Steve: Maaaaaaaaaaybe?

Tenkar: 5 - What kind of initial support can be expected after the core rules are released? Adventures, campaign setting, etc?

Steve: Yes and yes. We’re working on a neat GM tool, and an introductory one-character solo.

Tenkar: 6 - I see $60 is going to be the "I want it all" cost for TFT on KS. What are the plans for distribution aside from KS?

Steve: Not fully formed. Melee and Wizard will be in stores. If the whole Legacy box is in stores, it will be considerably more than $60.

Tenkar: 7 - Related in part to Question 4, are there any third party publishers that have asked or have lined up to support TFT (understood if this is confidential - yes or no may suffice)?

Steve: Confidential and yes.

Tenkar: 8 - With Melee and Wizard being published at the same time this time around, has that enabled you to ensure both books work seamlessly with each other?

Steve: I have certainly given it the old college try.

Tenkar: 9 - Will Advanced Melee and Advanced Wizard be a part of the initial core books, are they something for later or is it something that hasn’t been considered yet.

Steve: They will be subsumed into ITL, which will go up to 160 pages. (Note: "ITL" is "In the Labyrinth" and will be inside The Fantasy Trip Legacy Edition box.)

Tenkar: 10 - Which, if any, of the original supplements that you no have the rights to will be reissued?

Steve: All of them, eventually. Everything but the Death Tests is in the basic set, and the DTs are stretch goals that I really hope will be hit. If not, they will be part of the first supplement package.

Feel free to ask follow-ups.

Kickstarter - The Fantasy Trip RPG (Steve Jackson Games - Funded in Hours - Blowing through Stretch Goals)

I've been looking forward to The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter from the moment I heard it was in the works. More accurately, the moment Steve Jackson regained the rights. Apparently, that applies to others too, as it literally funded in hours. As I type this it is well over $55k in funding (with a $20k goal left in the dust).

So, what's in the Legacy Box? ($60 pledge level)

  • The two original mini-games, Melee and Wizard, each in its own mini-box.
  • The three roleplaying books (In The Labyrinth, Advanced Melee, and Advanced Wizard), combined and updated into a single volume of 160 pages, with the index that the original release lacked.
  • The classic dungeon-crawl adventure, Tollenkar’s Lair, with a full-color labyrinth map.
  • Maybe more, depending on what stretch goals are reached.
The Legacy Box is definitely the sweet point to back. Although, for $30 you can back for just the two mini-games - Melee and Wizard - and forgo the extras.

Damn it! They've already blown through their stretch goals. We need more! Steve! Phil! Get on that! ;)

I have an interview ready to be posted about The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter. Steve himself was gracious enough to answer my questions. If you have any questions, comment below and I'll see if I can get answers and I'll add them to the interview :)

News from Steve Jackson Games - New The Fantasy Trip Logos for Melee and Wizard

In the Better Late Than Never category of gaming news, it seems I missed Steve Jackson Games releasing the new logos for their The Fantasy Trip Melee and The Fantasy Trip Wizard games (for those that missed the announcement, Steve Jackson regained the rights to The Fantasy Trip late last year.

Coming soon(?) to a Kickstarter near you (around 15 bucks each for 2 mini boxed games)

News - The Fantasy Trip - Melee & Magic - 14.95 Price Points on Each

Steve Jackson Games made an announcement about The Fantasy Trip at GAMA and followed up with more info over at the Steve Jackson Games website:
At the GAMA Trade Show, just ended in Reno, we announced that the relaunch of The Fantasy Trip will start with miniboxed editions of the two combat games, Melee and Wizard, each retailing for $14.95.
The Fantasy Trip was Steve Jackson's first RPG. Its first part, Melee, was published in 1977. TFT was published by Metagaming, which went out of business about 1982, and TFT has been unsupported since then, and only available on the secondary market.
In late 2017, Steve regained the rights to the eight TFT releases that he had written himself: Melee, Wizard, Death Test, Death Test 2, Advanced Melee, Advanced Wizard, In The Labyrinth, and Tollenkar's Lair.
Most if not all of this material will be republished. The format is totally up in the air right now . . .
You can find more details at the link above.

Steve Jackson Games regains rights to The Fantasy Trip RPG

There's an announcement today over at Steve Jackson Games regarding Steve's earlier work for Metagaming and The Fantasy Trip RPG:
At the beginning of my career, long before GURPS, I created a roleplaying game called The Fantasy Trip. For decades, the rights have been held by Metagaming, a publisher which is no longer in operation. I'm very pleased to announce that I have regained the eight TFT releases that I wrote myself: Melee, Wizard, Death Test, Death Test 2, Advanced Melee, Advanced Wizard, In the Labyrinth, and Tollenkar's Lair.
Head over to Steve Jackson Games for more info (and an opportunity to discuss on the forums)

Free Clone of "The Fantasy Trip" RPG - You Know You are Curious

The Fantasy Trip is one of the few older RPGs that are just cost prohibitive to purchase on eBay (at least for my mind), but it has been cloned. Dark City Games has cloned it three times actually.

Legends for fantasy gaming, Time & Space for sci-fi and Untamed West for a western version. Yes, a western version.

Dark City Games also sells solo adventures for the rules. They also offer four of those adventures for free in PDF - two fantasy and two sci-fi (sorry, no westerns at the moment it seems).

I've downloaded the rules and they seem simple enough. As I don't have the originals, I can say how close they keep to the originals, but the price certainly is right.

I've also purchased a few of the adventures in print. They include a map and character and monster tokens to print out.

You can grab it all at the Dark City Games website.

There is another clone of The Fantasy Trip available at Heroes & Other Worlds

Looking Over The Legends RPG Rules (Not Mongoose but The Fantasy Trip)

I was hoping to play a solo adventure of either Shadows in the Dark or Emerald Twilight tonight, but after the full morning and day I had up here in the Poconos, I don't see it happening. That's okay, because I'd still have to design my party of four.

Here's the cool thing about the solos from Dark City Games - the fact that they default to four person parties means that you could actually run through the programed adventures with more than one player. It's actually a cool twist on the solo style adventure and gives an option that the standard default of solo adventuring, Tunnels & Trolls, doesn't - more than one player in a programmed adventure.

The other feature that the Dark City Games series of adventures has that T&T solos lack is tactical combat - it comes with a combat map and cardboard cutout tokens. Depending on your style of play, this could be a feature or a fault, but I'm much more tolerant of tactical combat when I'm the player and not the DM ;)

Anyhow, the Legends RPG system (which is available for free download on the DCG website) is also included in the adventures they sell. The rules take up about 7 digest sized pages (additional rules on how to use them in the programed adventure take up about another page). It's a pretty tight RPG for 7 pages, but it's also sparse in detail. You could, however, run a campaign using these 7 pages, but I suspect it would require much DM Fiat - not necessarily a bad thing, but it should be noted.

I'm going to have to put these rules through their paces later tonight and create my first character. Heck, I used to create characters in GURPS back in the day - even used Man to Man prior to GURPS. 7 pages of rules should be a breeze ;)
