Jamison Stone has Resigned as CEO of Apotheosis Studios - Are There More Chips to Fall?

The bag o' shit that landed in the laps of Satine Phoenix and her husband Jamison Stone on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022 has just gotten stomped on. Jamison Stone has resigned as CEO of Apotheosis Studios. I believe this move is an attempt to save the company from fallout, but the ball is gathering speed and I doubt this is the last chip to fall.

nuTSR Info Dump Coming Later This Week (or Next)

I've been blessed with a small collection of agreements and NDAs from nuTSR. They landed anonymously in my email earlier tonight. I'll be heading to NTRPG Con in the AM, and will bring the documentation with me to be perused by the various attornies in attendance. The plan is to have some professional if anonymous feedback as a follow-up next week.

I have also shared the dump with a few others that have an interest in nuTSR. I'll make sure to mention via social media where to find releases of further info if others get to it before me.

DTRPG Site Was Hacked on Friday, May 20th, 2022

I was wondering why DTRPG was down on the evening of May 20th, 2022. Then I had the following forwarded to me:

Meredith Gerber (She/Her) — Today at 10:27 PM

MAY 2022 SECURITY UPDATE

In the afternoon of May 20th, 2022, we had a security incident on site that we continue to actively investigate. We have no evidence that any customer account data was compromised.

A third party was able to set prices on titles that they were not authorized to modify, and they set the prices of many titles on site to free which led to some customers placing orders for free titles that were not meant to be free. We shut down the site shortly after this began to happen.

@Publisher & @CC Creator:

We are restoring the site to service, however, for the time being, there will be no access to the normal tool pages to enter or edit titles or to manage bundle titles. We continue to investigate these pages for any security issues and will restore them as soon as we can. Files can still be updated with the normal update file tool page.

Publishers may still use the main publisher hub title search to find and make some edits to titles.

In the coming week, we will analyze any titles that were ordered at incorrect prices and make restitution to publishers and creators whose titles were affected.

We will continue to post messages to Discord, publisher hub, and social media as our investigation continues.

Interestingly enough, there was no mention of this incident on the DTRPG Facebook page.

Dave Johnson's (Star Frontiers New Genesis/nuTSR Writer) Has a Website (apparently created by a third-party) Devoted to His Hateful & Bigoted Tweets

I was shown the below link late this afternoon. It took me a while to digest what I was seeing and to reconcile how any sane individual could share so much hateful and bigoted content.

I'm not going to share the content on The Tavern, but I will link to the site below, as well as Dave's Twitter account, which as I type this still has the tweets collected on the below website.

Hasbro/WotC Acquires D&D Beyond from Fandom for $146.3 Million in Cash

Last year, after the D&D survey was making the rounds, I surmised that WotC would be staking its claim very firmly in the digital world and VTTs. Well, it looks like the first step has happened.

Hasbro/WotC just spent nearly $150 Million to buy D&D Beyond from Fandom. If this isn't the first step toward a WotC branded VTT, I don't know what is.

If I were Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, and the rest that have a customer base that is mostly composed of D&D 5e players, I'd be very nervous right now.

Here's the WotC announcement.

Here's the BusinessWire article discussing the purchase.

Huge tip of the hat to Rob Conley over at Bat in the Attic for the heads up :)

News - Diamond Comic Distributors Hit With Ransomware Attack - Robinhood Investing Gets Hacked, 7 Million Customers Exposed

Diamond Distributors were offline over the weekend, the victim of a ransomware attack.

From Bleeding Cool (linked above):

As many of you may know, we are currently experiencing systems issues affecting our order processes and communications. Our IT department and a team of third-party experts are working around the clock to address these issues and restore full operations.

We've determined that the systems issues we're experiencing are the result of a ransomware attack. These attacks have, unfortunately, become increasingly pervasive in recent months, impacting organizations around the world. We want to assure you that customer data and financial information is not stored on our network and as such we have no reason to believe it has been impacted by this attack.

In addition to the investigation underway by our team of third-party forensic experts, we've also notified law enforcement. While some of our systems remain down, rest assured we are continuing to ship product and fill orders to the greatest extent we can. Our retailer services portal is online and available for FOC this evening and tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience as we work to restore full operations as quickly as possible. We're grateful for your support and will share updates with you as we have them.

Robinhood Investing was hacked last week, exposing the data of 7 million customers.

From The Verge:

Trading platform Robinhood said Monday that personal information for more than 7 million customers was accessed during a data breach on November 3rd. The company said in a news release that it does not appear that Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or debit card numbers were exposed, and no customers have had “financial loss” due to the incident.

An unauthorized third party “socially engineered a customer support employee by phone,” Robinhood said, and was able to access its customer support systems. The attacker was able to get a list of email addresses for approximately 5 million people and full names for a separate group of 2 million people. For a smaller group of about 310 people, additional personal information, including names, dates of birth, and zip codes, was exposed, and for about 10 customers, “more extensive account details” were revealed.

The company did not provide further information about what those “extensive” details were, but a spokesperson said in response to a query from The Verge that even for those 10 customers, “we believe that no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, or debit card numbers were exposed.” The spokesperson declined to say whether any of the customers may have been specifically targeted in the hack, but the company said it was in the process of notifying those who had been affected.

Coming soon to a hobby community near you...

Inflation and Supply Chain Issues Are Here - Troll Lord Games Perspective Below

I was reading the comments of the latest Folio Kickstarter (I'll probably cover the Kickstarter itself in a day or so) and I was struck by the following comment and response:

It should be noted that The Folio is printed stateside, so the problem is literally on the supply side of things. Less supply, prices rise. I suspect PDFs will become more popular for gaming t the table.

Then I remembered Steve Chenault of Troll Lord Games had a long post last week about the supply issues and how Troll Lord Games is addressing such.

There is more, and it is LONG! It is also one of the best explanations as to why to source and produce goods locally. I tip my hat to Steve, and I'm sharing his words because they should be read by as many as possible.
The LONG
Last year, as the pandemic began to spring across borders and wreak havoc in lives, both personal and professional, I put out a PSA of sorts, discussing the current state of things at Troll Lord Games. I did this to let people know that the pandemic and the devastation it caused would not impact their orders and Kickstarter pledges (just search pandemic on my page and you can find it or go the TLG blog.)
In short, when the pandemic jumped the Chinese border into Korea, we began stocking up on manufacturing and shipping supplies, anticipating its eventual arrival here. And because TLG uses domestic sources for its manufacturing and domestic sources for shipping and other supplies, that any delays were largely of our own doing and would be manageable.
That was 18 months ago (or thereabouts, I have never really been able to track time in my head). Many things have stayed the same, but we have had to adjust some. So today, as we anticipate the release of the 8th Printing of the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook, and the year is winding down, it seems a good idea to bring everyone in and let them know how TLG has weathered this rather challenging year.
Contents: Below I talk about domestic manufacturing and our supply line, changes to our practice, the environment, and veteran programs.
Covid
I am not going to discuss Covid or its many variants, and all that that entails. This is not the place for that discussion. People must make their own choices and carry on. I will say that two of our staff contracted the virus. One suffered horribly for weeks, the other barely had a sniffle. So, it seems TLG is a microcosm of the world around it.
Manufacturing/Printing
As those of you who have been around TLG for awhile know, we print and manufacture almost everything we do in the United States, or at times Canada (we would in Mexico if the opportunity presented itself). I have been and remain a large supporter of domestic purchases. This goes for everyone, everywhere, in every country. Wherever you live, support the locals first. It is a good philosophy. Good for your neighbors. Good for the environment. Good for everything (personally we have even begun using local butcher shops to buy our meat).
Because of this, we have suffered no shortages of any product or material since the pandemic and the economic turmoil that it caused, began. I do not see any on the near horizon.
Our softcover books, most of them, we print in house in our own print facility. We buy locally sourced paper (though the supplier is in Memphis and Illinois).
Our hardcover books, and some softcover, we print in Marceline Missouri. They assure me that they purchase their supplies locally.
TLG does this, largely because I love my country (both sides of the political divide: left and right, I love you all and your hyperbole, you worthy bastards!) but there are also business concerns:
Quality Control: We have complete control over the quality of the manufacturing. No long delays trying to sort out an issue. We smyth sew all our hardcovers and it is done in Missouri where, if there is a problem, it can be fixed immediately. This is vital to maintaining high quality books that see a great deal of use.
Delays & Interruptions: This has always been a concern for me. I read a great deal of history and know how quickly things can change, and the pandemic was just another in a long line of events that highlighted that. Having our releases subject to the whims of other countries, tariff wars, seizures, war or even being held up for any number of reasons isn’t something I wish to entertain. This is particularly important where Kickstarters are concerned. Backers have already paid for product, it is enough that they have to wait on TLG, its too much to ask for them to wait on the whims of international trade.
Environmental: Over 95% of our sales are to the U.S. and Canada (we are looking at you next Mexico)! Material produced here, with local resources does not have to clog the trans-oceanic shipping lanes. It is also produced in facilities that are subject to the laws of the U.S., which do keep factories much cleaner than many other countries.
Local Economy: It is just good for the local economy. It is good for us, our neighbors, and our neighbor’s neighbors. It helps them pay their bills, and that is pretty cool.
Cost: Does it cost more to print domestically? Yes. It does. But we are okay with that.
Manufacturing domestically is our philosophy and will remain so, so long as I am at the helm.
Domestic Manufacturing in Real Terms
Manufacturing and printing in the United States and supporting companies that do so has very down to earth, hearth and home consequences. For those who don’t really give this stuff much thought, I want to explain this in real terms to visualize it better. Lord knows it took me several years at the helm of this company before I really grasped the nature of this beast.
Local
When you spend money at TLG, either through direct orders, buying at a retail shop, a crowd sourcing campaign, or wherever, a percentage of that purchase (ranging from 36% - 100%) goes into our coffers. Well, the coffer really, we only have the one and it is only just a jar that Tim keeps beneath the old cabin slab down by the river. That money does not sit there. It immediately goes to paying everyone who works here. There are five of us who work at TGL full time and about half a dozen artists, cartographers, and others. Revenue pays them first (and just for those out there who are mad at CEOs, I always get paid last), they take that money and pay whatever bills they pay. Your support goes right to their homes.
But your impact is much, much greater than supporting artists and writers and designers. Through TLG you have a direct impact on lives beyond our humble walls.
TLG uses local suppliers for equipment parts, shipping boxes, paper, glue, printing paper, toner, and printer maintenance. We are the largest client for one of these companies, and one of the largest for another. Both businesses suffered tremendously during the pandemic, largely because restaurants dropped off ordering menus, fliers, and posters. However, TLG’s business remained steady and strong. Book printing in our own shop was up, because of you, so we ordered more supplied, paper, etc. This helped these businesses weather this storm. You did this through TLG.
Your spending, goes through TLG and to their coffers. From there it keeps their lights on and employees working. Their employees continue to get paid to cover whatever expenses they have in their own lives.
Random Side Note: I can always tell when the economy is doing poorly, as sales reps from businesses all over the country, whom I have not talked to in years, call looking to see if I need anything.
Second Random Side Note: At the beginning of the pandemic, TLG used five local suppliers for our print shop and mail room and several in adjoining states. Two of those have not survived and have gone under and a third moved their operations from Little Rock to Memphis.
Neighboring States
This is the same for the large printer we use in Missouri and the smaller one in Pennsylvania. We’ve poured a small mountain of money into their coffers, that in turn goes toward their employees, buying supplies from other producers and their employees and so on, all the way down to the young clerk, selling food at the market.
This is capitalism. Ours is a minor market of which you are a vital part. There are no lobbyists supporting these businesses, nor government officials helping them, there is nothing but the commerce created and hard work. And the root of that commerce is you.
This is one of many reasons we print domestically. And one of the reasons, if you can, that you should try to support companies who manufacture stuff in your local community, state, and country. It is just better for everyone.
Sidenote: And this is important, all the sales reps at these businesses and the owners in several have reached out on numerous occasions to thank us for our business, something they had not done often before. That is telling. And of course, I tell them, they need to thank you guys. You are making all this possible.
Necessary Changes
There have been two major changes at TLG because of the unpleasantness. I will briefly outline them.
Supplies: The supply chain has been a wreck for over a year. Though we purchase everything domestically, there have been delays in delivery. The longest we waited was about six weeks for 2-inch boxes. After that brief foray into not having 2-inch boxes (it is why some of you got 3-inch boxes with just one book in it), I had Todd change the ordering pattern and double the order of everything. For instance: we went from ordering tape in bundles of 22 rolls (I think) to 36 rolls and now in bundles of 144 rolls. When we dip below 50 rolls of tape, we will order again. We do this with everything. It is why we have several thousands of shipping boxes. So, this has necessitated us spending more upfront and piling this crap all over creation (actually I’m pretty good at storing crap so it is all nicely stacked away in the print shop).
Printing Delays: Covid hammered our larger print partner, where we have our hardbacks printed and they have suffered so many absences that their print time went from 3-4 weeks to 5-7 weeks. I suspect that they have had the same issues with getting supplies. Even though it is local, there are all kinds of problems all up and down the chain.
In short, we purchase deeper to cover possible shortages on shipping supplies (which is actually a good thing, because when you order deeper you get a bigger discount) and we have had to adjust our release schedules by a few weeks.
The Three R’s Recycle, Reuse and Read more C&C
We take to heart Davis’ much used phrase “Don’t s*** where you eat” and do our level best to recycle and reuse. Here are things we do to make that happen:
• We take all shipping boxes that come to us to the print shop, and cut them into packing strips that we use to better secure the books you order. Those who have ordered will notice these little strips in their boxes, basically quadruple boxing books. By reusing these boxes, we save a little money in packing which we spend on…
• Packing peanuts. Our packing peanuts are made from corn starch, so are static free and completely biodegradable. They are easy to use and if a sudden wind picks up in the pasture and carries them all over God’s creation you don’t have to worry about your Pa hollering at you for polluting his pasture (just a random observation). You can also make a mush stew out of them, which Mark Sandy did one day, but the taste was abhorrent so we do not recommend it.
• We only use plastic bubble wrap if another shipper sent it to us. So on the wild chance you received that in a package it was reused.
• Shipping boxes are ordered locally, many made locally, cutting down on shipping fuel and cost etc.
• All scrap paper from the print shop, scrap from making boxes, etc, goes into a bin and sent to the recycling center here in Little Rock, where I assume it gets recycled (I’m not sure what to believe in after reading about the crash in ’47 though). Some of the excess paper we make into note pads for the office staff where we try to make notes about things we are going to forget to do.
We do what we can to leave our little corner of this marble a little cleaner than when we found it.
Veterans
As a veteran myself, the son of one and brother to two others, I try to keep myself abreast of the issues that that community of brothers and sisters deals with. There is little TLG can do. In the past we have offered free product, print and digital to any service members in active theatres, we continue to do that. If you know anyone serving in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in an active theatre, let us know, we’ll ship them books. We also offer all Veterans a 50% discount on any purchase made through our store (all six branches and Guard and Reserves). Just holler at us for the code. Also, if you or a loved one is part of a group that uses RPG material to help Veterans cope with the many issues they struggle with, please let us know, and we’ll send books free of charge.
These men and women gave their all. We have not forgotten that.
Wrapping Up
We have 2 outstanding Kickstarters, the Players Handbook, 8th printing which should be shipping to backers in the coming weeks and the NPC Almanac which we hope to have out in December. Beyond that we just launched one this week for the C&C Castle Keepers Screens (https://www.kickstarter.com/.../castles-and-crusades...). All of these, including the screens, are printing domestically and we should see no delays for all the aforementioned reasons. We have all the necessary shipping supplies, from labels to boxes to fulfill all of these without a problem.
It has been a wild and difficult year. Many of us have suffered losses we never wanted to face, nor even thought possible. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, we’ll continue to provide games for your table and fun for your family and in turn, please remember, you are fueling a whole microcosm of businesses and the people that labor there.
Sincerely. From us here at TLG, and all our suppliers and printers, Thank You.

As an aside, I got my new HeroQuest box delivered today.  I had no idea that FedEx delivered on Sundays.

News - Supply Chain Woes Hit Hasbro

WotC previously announced that its planned holiday releases are being pushed back to January 2022. Now parent company Hasbro has revealed that it has about $100 million in various products that are caught in the snagged supply chain.

Hasbro logged $100 million worth of orders that went unfilled during its third quarter due to shipping supply chain disruptions, including capacity shortages and port congestion.

Shippers have faced both skyrocketing rates and delays as they try to get goods into the U.S. Larger players have more resources and more options to navigate the crisis, but no one can avoid it entirely. Hasbro Chief Financial Officer Deb Thomas said this summer that the company was seeing ocean shipping costs rise fourfold.

News - Paizo Releases a Statement Recognizing the United Paizo Workers Union

The original article is linked below:

https://gamingtrend.com/news/paizo-releases-a-statement-recognizing-the-united-paizo-workers/

October 21, 2021 (Redmond, WA) – Paizo is pleased to announce it has voluntarily recognized the United Paizo Workers union, which is affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

“We look forward to working with the union to continue and expand our efforts to make Paizo a better place to work and to ensure that Pathfinder and Starfinder products continue to exceed gamer expectations for many years to come,” said Jeff Alvarez, President of Paizo.

The next steps will involve the United Paizo Workers (UPW) union electing their bargaining representatives and then meeting with Paizo management to negotiate terms for a collective bargaining agreement. We expect this process to take some time, but we are committed to the effort and hope to settle a contract in due course. Until an agreement is reached, the Paizo staff continues to focus on creating amazing Pathfinder and Starfinder products.

Paizo has always been about creating awesome games, and we look forward to the changes that unionization will bring to the company. Please join us on this journey by following the UPW on Twitter and stay tuned for future updates!

Interestingly enough, many of the Paizo Freelancers that were involved with the "work stoppage" were full-time Paizo employees moonlighting as freelancers to pay their bills.

Paizo's Staff Votes to Unionize - United Paizo Workers

I'm not sure what larger effect the decision of Paizo's staff to unionize will have on the larger TTRPG industry (likely little if any), but the 30+ staffers at Paizo are hoping that Paizo will recognize their union.

From Dicebreaker:

Staff say they are “underpaid for their labor, required to live in one of the most expensive cities in the United States, and subjected to untenable crunch conditions on a regular basis”.

Most everyone in the RPG industry is underpaid for their labor, in large part because the profit margins are not as large as many would like them to be.

In any case, 30 some odd members does not make for a powerful bargaining unit. It is, however, likely, that Paizo has the largest staff of non-managerial job titles in the industry.

Interesting times.

My further thoughts are in the video below:

Kickstarter Warns of The Great Supply Chain Disruption

I logged into Kickstarter earlier today and noticed a notification that WASN'T about a Kickstarter Survey that I was supposed to fill out. No, this notification lead to an article that would have been at home in the NY Times or BBC News.

Supply Chain Disruptions Are Affecting Kickstarter Projects–Here's What to Know

It’s a good bet you've already heard at least a little about the supply chain issues that are making it hard to access certain kinds of products and materials, and causing delays in manufacturing and shipping all around the world. Created by a confluence of factors including pandemic-related changes to consumer demand, worker shortages, and the ripple effects of COVID on a globally interconnected economy, the "Great Supply Chain Disruption" has become an emblem of the increasing unpredictability of the modern world.

Read the article linked above. It's a good read. But why did Kickstarter put together such a post?

Because supply issues are going to hit Kickstarter hard, and I suspect they are trying to get ahead of potential chargebacks from customers.

It's not just chargebacks.

Late Kickstarters aren't going to be "a thing". Late Kickstarters will be "The Thing" for the immediate future, and it's going to cut into their business model.

Creators may hold off launching new projects until delivery services stabilize. Backers may decide not to back, but to wait until certain projects hit the retail market, if they ever do.

WotC Dungeons & Dragons Titles for the Remainder of 2021 Will Be Delayed

Now, I know a certain percentage of The Tavern's regular readers are saying "who gives a fuck that WotC releases are being delayed!" and I certainly understand that sentiment. It's not the fact that the books are delayed, it's WHY they are delayed that is the actual story. It appears the Expansion Rules Gift Set will miss the Holiday sales season (among other titles being delayed)

According to ComicBook.com:

Wizards of the Coast previously announced that its upcoming Expansion Rules Gift Set box would be released in January 2022 instead of its originally intended holiday 2021 release date.
Many industries have experienced delays and disruptions caused by a global shipping crisis and widespread resources shortages. The book industry has been particularly hard hit in part because of printer capacity issues compounding the supply chain problems caused by the pandemic. Several experts have noted that larger books - such as gift books, box sets, art books, and coffee table books - are being particularly impacted by the current wave of shortages.

Add in the labor shortage in the US, impacting everything from unloading cargo ships, warehousing, and shipping within the States and you have a perfect storm.

I wonder if this makes using a US printer more viable, at least for some of the smaller publishers, as shipping from China (where WotC, Paizo, and other TTRPG publishers print the bulk of their books) is becoming more of a crapshoot.

Death Announcement - Doug Rhea, NTRPG Con, Has Passed

Doug Rhea passed last night at approximately 9:50 PM CDT. He was best known as the founder and main force behind the NTRPG Con, he was an avid collector of games, and a huge supporter of the founding generation of RPG creators. His passing leaves a huge hole in our community.

Doug was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer over 5 years ago and had already survived past expectations and beaten the odds until now.

Being a stubborn SOB, Doug did not go quietly into the night. He fought to the end. God, take his soul into your care and bless his family and friends in these tough and stressful times.

I'll update this post when more details are available - Tenkar

News - Michael Curtis Joins Goodman Games as Director of Product Development, DCC

I'm a few days late at sharing this, but Michael Curtis has joined Goodman Games in the capacity of Director of Product Development, Dungeon Crawl Classics. I still remember the excitement I felt when I read through Stonehell Dungeon for the first time :)

The following announcement is from the Goodman Games website, linked here:

We are very pleased to announce that Michael Curtis has joined Goodman Games on a full-time basis as Director of Product Development for the Dungeon Crawl Classics line!

Michael’s name is well known to fans of Goodman Games, especially for his work on DCC Lankhmar, and many other DCC products. He has been involved with tabletop role-playing games since he was ten years old and has been working freelance in the RPG industry for almost 15 years. During that time, Michael created the renowned megadungeon of Stonehell, wrote the award-winning gaming supplement The Dungeon Alphabet, served as lead designer on the DCC Lankhmar product line for Goodman Games (during which he located an unpublished manuscript by legendary sword-and-sorcery author Fritz Leiber), and has penned or contributed to more than 60 Goodman Games releases, including fan-favorite DCC RPG adventures Frozen in Time, The Chained Coffin, Intrigue at the Court of Chaos, and The Queen of Elfand’s Son.

Michael has also contributed to such classic adventures as the Judges Guild reprints of Citadel of Fire, Fortress Badabaskor, and Tegel Manor, and converted and expanded the famous Dungeons & Dragons adventures Castle Amber and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks for fifth edition as part of the Original Adventures Reincarnated line. He is the co-host of the Twitch show “Keep Crawlin’ with Mike and Brendan,” and has written many of the “Adventures in Fiction” essays for the Goodman Games website, detailing the works of classic, yet often overlooked, fantasy authors from the last 100 years.

Michael joins Chris Doyle, Director of Product Development for our 5E product line, as a leader in our design of high-quality role-playing game products. As our DCC and 5E lines continue to gain momentum, we’re excited to see where their collaboration will take us.

“I look forward to the challenges and rewards this new position with Goodman Games will bring,” said Michael. “I’m excited by the opportunities that guiding Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG into the future allows. I hope to keep true to the game’s past and the works that inspired it, while also making it accessible to new audiences around the world.” Michael is a native New Yorker and splits his time between the mountains and the sea, seeking adventures in both.

TSR Trademark Assigned June 16th - Let the Flurry of Pointless Announcements Begin!

Let's see. We want to premiere a new convention and use the nostalgia attached to our newly registered as of June 16th Trademark.

I know. We'll call it TSR Con 2022!

But what makes us special? I know! We'll have it at Horticultural Hall in Lake Geneva! Instant super nostalgia! We'll get signups without even announcing a schedule.

Sure, its max capacity is 160 peeps, but we'll say it's "The Nation's Premier Wargame Convention" because surely there aren't any others that are bigger and have history, right? I mean, it's not like there's a list of wargaming conventions available to check against. Who needs a proven track history to make these statements when we have "nostalgia!"

When is it you ask? Just say "2022". It's a big year. We'll figure out the details later but we need to build the hype now!

If only we could secure the TM for Blackmoor in time for the convention. That would be icing on the cake.

What, we already filed for it? Awesome! Let the Arneson Estate know we will give them favorable licensing terms.

Just wait for the press release at PR.com! It will be amazing with run-on sentences that will make every German proud!

Just like our TSR Games is Back press release. Just don't take it too seriously, because WotC might get offended...

Hey, do we get to sue the "old" "New TSR" for using our TM? What about WotC using our TMs on their DTRPG PDFs and PODs from the "original" TSR era? Now that we've redrawn all of the classic logos and have TMs pending, they're violating our trademarks, right?

There's a New Dungeons & Dragons Survey from WotC - Some Folks are Getting an NDA with Extra Questions

There's a new D&D survey from WotC and it asks, among the basic questions, which editions you've played in the last 12 months and what other games you play.

So yes, it's an opportunity to let them get some information on old-school gaming.

Also, some folks are getting additional questions with an NDA attached. I'm not sure how enforceable that NDA would be, but there has been some pushback.

News - Doug Rhea (NTRPG Con Founder) Underwent Surgery and Remains Hospitalized re: Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Yesterday, Doug Rhea underwent surgery after his intestines burst. He was already hospitalized and surgery had been scheduled prior. Doug's surgery went well and some tumors were removed but he will require further hospitalization and bed rest. He will not be at NTRPG Con this June.

Doug was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer approximately 5 years ago and has already survived past expectations and beaten the odds. Doug is a stubborn SOB and will not go quietly into the night. God bless him and his family in these tough and stressful times. If you can spare some prayers or positive thoughts for Doug and his family, I'm sure it would be appreciated. The following is from Michael "Bad Mike" Badolato and is borrowed from the NTRPG Con Facebook Page with kind permission. Tenkar

NTRPG con is family. It has been so since the beginning, and it is run by family. It’s no coincidence most of the people running the con are brothers, sons, grandkids, etc. You guys are all part of that family…you took a chance on us when we started this thing in a La Quinta with 50 people, and here we are thirteen years later known as one of the best RPG cons in the south, with a guest list some bigger cons envy. This is mostly due to Doug Rhea, who is an unstoppable force when it comes to getting things done, fearless when it comes to cold-calling guys like Larry Elmore to see if they will show up to our little con in Texas, willing to finance a con that breaks even at best, uncompromising on making sure his high standards are met every year. Which makes this announcement damn difficult…Doug won’t be able to attend NTRPG Con this year.

So it’s time to let you guys in on some family business. Doug has been very sick the past few months due to intestinal blockages because of the tumors inside him. Sick enough that he finally underwent surgery Tuesday to alleviate the blockages, take out parts of his intestine, and remove some of the tumors that have been growing in Doug for the past several years. For those that don’t know, Doug was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer four years ago and given only a few years to live. Because of bi-weekly chemo, he’s been able to beat the odds. By sheer toughness and willpower alone he’s been able to plow through many health issues the past couple of years, most of which he hasn’t told anyone about since he’s a very private person. However, the present situation progressed to the point where hospitalization and surgery were inevitable, it’s just a damn shame it had to happen the week right before his favorite time of the year, NTRPG con.

The operation he underwent Tuesday was a major surgery that took six hours. Many things were removed and the doctor who did the surgery said it was “miraculous” how well it went considering the circumstances. We are very hopeful this surgery will alleviate much of the discomfort and pain he’s had recently and improve his quality of life in the long run. In the short term, however, things are rough. Doug still has not woken up after his surgery, and has a high fever (a sign of infection). Because of this, we are looking at an extended hospital stay and then bed rest at home for probably two months at least. Even if he was awake, he would be in no shape with his compromised immune system to attend the con or meet with anyone in person. We hope he wakes up and makes it home soon so he can watch some of the live feed from there, but we will also set something up at the con where you can tape personal well-wishes to Doug that he can watch later when he recovers. I know from talking to him the personal messages he’s gotten the last few years mean a lot to him. If you feel inclined, prayers and positive thoughts are also welcome, not just for him, but for his son, grandkids, and wife.

As for the con, we will get by in 2021. Gary Oliver, David Rhea, and I can run this thing in our sleep, and we will still give you the best small con game experience you’ve had in, well, the past two years.  Some of the bells and whistles might be missing due to this happening with such short notice, but all we ask is that you take it in stride and have a great time gaming and saying hello to people you haven’t seen or sat at a table within two years. Seriously, this is what will make Doug the happiest, knowing everyone here is having a blast. I know he would rather be here running his games and hanging out with us personally, but I’m hopeful this surgery will extend the time he has to keep at this convention thing for many more years, and he’ll be able to personally meet and greet everyone next year. His son David will be running all of Doug’s events, so be sure and tell him how much his father means to all of us when you see him at the con.

For this year, if you have any questions, one of us should be able to help you out. Yes everything is not going to be able to be run with the ruthless efficiency Doug usually brings to this. Be patient with us, and remember where we were last year and how much better this year is looking…smell a flower, have a taco, and be chill. I know a lot of you are saying “What can I do to help?”  The most useful thing you can do, if you are a con veteran (you know who you are), is to take it on yourself to help out a newbie or someone having an issue. Take that guy or gal with the confused expression aside and ask if you can help. Clean that table off that the staff hasn’t gotten to yet. Make sure someone looking for a game to play in knows what to do or bring them to a game yourself. Seriously, half the time a question pops up on the FB page it’s already been answered by con veterans before I even have time to reply myself. Your help this year will be greatly appreciated!

We will answer questions best we can on the NTRPG con page, but understand, everything I’ve just said is pretty much the extent of our knowledge. We will keep everyone informed to the best of our ability here on the page as news develops, please don’t inundate us with private messages because, well, this is all we know right now. Thanks in advance for your help, and for being a part of our lives and NTRPG con the past 13 years.
