Free RPG Resources - Universal NPC Emulator (Systemless)

The Universal NPC Emulator was suggested by one of The Tavern's YouTube viewers, and all I can say is, where has this been for my entire career as a DM? It's short, clocking in at 18 pages, of which 8 contain the tables you'll refer to.

When I discuss free and PWYW resources that should be part of every GM's toolkit, the Universal NPC Emulator goes to the top of that pile. Don't hesitate. Grab it before you run your next game session, no matter the system you use.

UNE is the Universal NPC Emulator. With just a handful of dice rolls, UNE can help create a surprising non-player character (NPC) with its own motivations. A few more dice rolls, and UNE can provide more direction to place the newly-created NPC smack dab in the center of the story. It can even help determine the NPC’s general mood towards the player characters.

Best of all UNE is system and setting agnostic. It will work in Techno-Roman science fiction just as well as 1930′s Cthulhu hour or apocalypse fantasy.

Free OSR - Delving Deeper (White Box Clone)

My son! The Original White Box begat Swords & Wizardry, which itself begat the Swords & Wizardry White Box. Alas, by then, the Swords & Wizardry White Box had strayed too far from its source material, and this begat Delving Deeper, an attempt to be closer to the "true" White Box. So it is written.

Delving Deeper is a legal emulation of the original 1974 fantasy role-playing game published under the Open Game License. As well as being a game in its own right, Delving Deeper is also a legal platform for publishing supporting material compatible with the “Original Edition” games.

Why Original Edition?

0e games are accessible! A player needs to know so few rules that even a novice can immediately jump in and get involved. The rules themselves are coarse grained and uncomplicated which makes the mechanics easy to grasp, and game play fast.

Delving Deeper is pitched at just the right level of abstraction to facilitate dungeon, town, and wilderness exploration as well as combat scenarios from man-to-man duels to veritable battles involving superheroes, dragons, or scores of orcs. What might take hours to resolve with more “advanced” rules might take mere minutes to resolve in 0e.

Free OSR - Castles & Crusades Players Handbook & Fiction [BUNDLE]

My doorway back to old-school gaming was Castles & Crusades, and you were able to get the C&C Player's Handbook for less than 10 bucks a copy from Buy.com back in the day. That was back with the first printing of Castles &Crusades.

Today, you can get the 7th printing of the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook in a bundle, along with a short selection of C&C-themed fiction in PDF for the price of FREE. As in the price of air.

You could, alternatively, pay 20 bucks for the C&C Players Handbook PDF and forgo the fiction, but I think free is an even fairer price ;)

New Release - Tsar Frontiers: Not Genuine (Parody of the yet to be published Star Frontiers: New Genesis)

If you've been following The Tavern's YouTube Channel (and you HAVE been watching, right? ;) you'd know that an unknown source has put together a parody of the as-yet-unreleased TSR3 title, Star Frontiers: New Genesis. The parody is called Star Frontiers: Not Genuine.

The Star Frontiers: Not Genuine PDF first went up on itch.io. A Print on Demand was available for a short time on Lulu (I received a shipping notification earlier this morning in regards). Well, The Tsar Frontiers: Not Genuine (notice the title change) PDF is now available at DTRPG for free.

Grab a copy. It's good for a laugh and actually looks playable ;)

It's been a number of years since I've updated the various Free RPGs and Free Resources pages. Some of the links are still directing to the RPGNow domain, which is now defunct and needs to be updated to DTRPG . There are also a number of games and resources that need to be added to the various pages.

If you can think of any new games, adventures, resources, etc that need to be added, please leave them as a comment below.

When each page is fully updated, I'll link it via a new post here on The Tavern's Homepage.

Quickstart - RuneQuest (Free)

I've mentioned this on The Tavern's YouTube channel, but the best campaign I ever ran was using the RuneQuest 2e rules with the Pavis and Big Rubble boxed sets over 30 years ago. We never called it a sandbox, but it was by far an open-world-style campaign and very driven by player actions.
