Free OSR(ish) - Grimwild: Free Edition

Over the weekend, I covered how the creator of today's free OSR (ish) pick ghosted their Kickstarter backers, but the free version of the game actually won an ENnie award this year.

Grimwild: Free Edition is a nice free pick. Run it as it is, or steal it for your campaign.

Grimwild is a streamlined, character-driven, cinematic fantasy RPG. You can also buy the full version with the Extras chapter here.

The goal with Grimwild is simple. Take D&D-inspired heroic fantasy, with its 12 classes and super tropey monsters, and match it up with a super fast, cinematic narrative rules system.

  • The rules are concerned with the dramatic over the realistic, and minimizing detailed tracking.
  • The game is very low-prep for the GM. The fiction maps to the rules simply, on-the-fly.
  • Designed to run in your own setting (or a published one), or use our pointcrawl exploration system and collaborative worldbuilding to create emergent storylines.
  • Characters earn bonus dice for pursuing self-set goals, pushing the story in the direction they want.
  • The GM is given a clear GM framework of principles and moves to run the game by.
  • Get strong player buy-in with the adventuring party creation system and creative freedom for the players.
  • The rules create fluid action and gets rid of the mechanical slog that bogs down D&D.
  • And all of this with GREAT ART from artist Per Janke, creating a consistent vision throughout the book.

So who is Grimwild for?

  • D&D 3.5E, 5E and Pathfinder players will appreciate the low-GM prep, easy-to-learn mechanics, and the focus on character goals and letting players push the story.
  • OSR/NSR players will enjoy the straightforward resolution system, sandbox-friendly gameplay, and ease of adapting modules from other systems. Lots of rollable tables help as well.
  • Narrative game players will like the fiction-first resolution system, with a focus on player agency, and narrative currency that fuels drama.

Key Features

Grimwild has a lot going on inside, but here's an overview of big-picture stuff. We'll talk about mechanics later.

  • All 12 classes from D&D: Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorceror, Warlock, Wizard. With familiar abilities, re-imagined for a narrative rules system.
  • New Take on 100 Classic Monsters: We detail and give advice on creating encounters that make the monsters a part of the story, not just meatbags of hit points to chew through.
  • Story Kits: No preparation required scenarios that create evolving situations, not railroaded plots. These are more kits for your creativity than they are storylines, filled with evocative prompts and timers that create developing situations for you to tell your own stories, not ours.
  • Homebrew-friendly system: Built on our open licensed (CC-BY) ruleset, Moxie. The game text itself is all licensed CC-BY forever. It's designed to be cinematic, narrative, and most importantly modular. This makes changing rules to your liking simple and the open license allows people to make modules, adventures, monsters, and even entirely new games with its mechanics.

Gameplay Overview

The easiest way to get a clear understanding of the Grimwild mechanics is to download the preview. It has the entire rule system in it. But here are some highlights that show off unique aspects of the system:

  • Base system: Roll d6 dice pools and keep the highest die to determine how well things went. The GM adds d8s called thorns to represent difficulty. When they come up as a 7 or 8, it cuts your results down a notch. A critical always beats thorns, though, so the PCs can always gain the upper hand.
  • Freeform Magic: Cast magic on the fly—the spell names, god domains, or details of a song give you limitations and permissions on what you can cast. Just say what you want to happen, then use the simple magic rules to cast the spell. No long spell lists, no memorizing, no opening the book to reference it.
  • PC Bonds: Form bonds with the other PCs, like playful camaraderie, solid rivalry, or tense mistrust. When your bonds change through play, update them giving the other PC a bonus die called spark!
  • Add Story Details: You can declare details to add into the story, about your character's gear, backstory, the elements around you in a scene, the behaviors of NPCs, and more. Particularly impactful details require you to spend spark, points you earn from facing adversity and getting up to trouble.
  • Vex: When you get hit with fear, confusion, or other emotional turmoil, you keep control over your PC's actions. A simple system of choosing fight, flight, freeze, or freakout turns previously boring moments of losing control into a chance for you to play up the struggle they go through the way you want.

Free OSR - Ashes Without Number (Free Edition)

If you didn't already know it, Sine Nomine Publishing offers nearly all of its core rulebooks in a "Free Edition" as well as a "Deluxe Edition". The Free Editions are complete games and truly a gift to the gaming community.

Ashes Without Number (Free Edition) is Sine Nomine's post-apoc ruleset, and as you have already seen, the price is right :) (you can grab the Ashes Without Number Deluxe Edition here)

Ashes Without Number is both a game set after the end and a toolkit to help you build the apocalypse you desire. Just as with its compatible sister-games, Stars Without Number for sci-fi, Worlds Without Number for fantasy, and Cities Without Number for cyberpunk, Ashes Without Number gives you an Old School Renaissance-inspired game chassis and a vast swath of system-agnostic tools for designing tragic destruction and desperate struggles.

Within its pages, you'll find...

  • A complete OSR game system for building survivors and sending them to face the horrors of their new world, including guidance on blending other Without Number games into your play.
  • Genre-specific support for near-future After the Fall tales of social collapse, invasion, and global disasters, Deadlands games of zombie hordes and beleaguered enclaves, and Mutant Wasteland campaigns of post-nuclear adventure in lands of mutant peril and mysterious tech.
  • Enclave rules for system-agnostic modeling of competing outposts, tribal villages, and refugee camps, all struggling to survive a world where there is never enough of anything but death.
  • Mysterious devices and lost relics of the old world, strange tech for mutant wanderers to discover and misuse in their exploration of ancient ruins.
  • Campaign design tools for both crisis-centered games of immediate survival in the face of total societal collapse, and exploration-centered campaigns of seeking out the old world's remnants and recovering them for your home and allies.
  • Myriad tags and random tables for building your post-apocalyptic adventures, flavoring your mutant perils, and building interesting ruins and survivor enclaves for your PCs to encounter, all system-agnostic and built with the Sine Nomine touch.

And all of that is in this free version of this game. In the deluxe version, you'll also get...

  • Evil techno-wizard rules for building the mad science-sorcerers who plague so many worlds beneath a shattered moon.
  • Ash Sorcerers, a class for PCs in a far-future world of science and magic who wield the sinister arts of a half-damnable path.
  • Mentalists, a psychic class for those individuals touched with unearthly powers and strange visions in the midst of ruin. This class can also be used as a substitute for the Psychic in Stars Without Number, for GMs who prefer to have more subtle abilities in their games.
  • Modular power armor for those knights of the radioactive dust who bear these mighty relics. Voracious in their demands for power and maintenance materials, they still can tip a battle single-handedly with their myriad weapons and fittings.
  • Hub settlement rules for fine-grained development of a single enclave by players who prefer to put more focus on their home. Build individual facilities and resources while keeping your population alive in the face of constant privation.

Free OSR - ROGUELAND

I like short and light OSR rulesets. Remember, I'm the guy behind Swords & Wizardry Light & Continual Light. ROGUELAND looks awesome, and even if I don't ever run it, I may steal, er - borrow from it liberally.

ROGUELAND is available for free in PDF. Simply add it to your DTRPG cart and add it to your digital collection.

ROGUELAND is a 36 page rules-light, tabletop role-playing game. It is based on Ben Milton's Knave with modifications that focus on:

  • - defining characters by the items they carry rather than specific abilities or class features
  • - interpreting and casting free-form magic
  • - monster, trap, and treasure generation
  • - exploration procedures
  • - and more

This game uses player-facing, roll-high, d20 mechanics, and is broadly compatible with other OSR games and source materials.

Free OSR - ShadowSpark Skeletal Foes (ShadowDark)

I've known Phil Reed for a decade or more, and I've been following his creative works for even longer. Phil's ShadowSpark Skeletal Foes for ShadowDark is a short PDF priced at PWYW pricing, and could work with other OSR games with minimal conversion, IMO.

Without a doubt, skeletons are one of my favorite types of monsters in any fantasy RPG. These animated dead are a wonderful foe for the heroes since they can wait around for decades (sometimes centuries) without any need to eat, drink, sleep, or the other requirements that living creatures possess. After all, no one need question how the skeletons were surviving in the dungeon all these years without access to food. They stand around and wait for the action.

In many RPGs, skeletons are treated as a single monster with one stat block. Combine that with their low power level and skeletons in most fantasy RPGs don’t give me enough variety, so I enjoy working up new types of skeletal foes for most systems.

This work expands on skeletons in the core game, presenting four new options that GMs may use to throw something other than the basic skeleton at the adventurers.

Free OSR - The Metallic Tome (Modren Day OSR Sourcebook)

I had to check. I have a hardcover copy of the Metallic Tome on my bookshelf :)

So, what is The Metallic Tome? It's a modern-day OSR sourcebook harkening to the days of mosh pits and hair metal. And it's priced as Pay What You Want (PWYW) pricing.

Pollution chokes our seas, nuclear war has destroyed our cities, and worst of all, guitars are illegal. Surveillance satellites monitor our every move. Conformity is the law! There is only one thing that can save us: METAL.

Metallic Tome is a sourcebook for old-school role-playing games set in the modern day. It's inspired by heavy metal music. Created by the reprobate who wrote the Teratic Tome.

Features include:

  • New character alignments, including Awful Good, Chaotic Player, and Neutral Vague
  • New starting equipment, including department store mannequin, 4 scorpions in a shoebox, and an audio cassette recording of Nuclear Assault's "Survive"
  • New Cleric spells like Necrotic Blasphemous Desecration, Interval of the Devil, and Party Hard
  • New Magic-User spells like Power Word Mosh and Air Raid Siren
  • Strange new foes, including asbestos elementals and nuclear dragons
  • Wondrous magic items, such as the Brigandine Loincloth and the Revolver of Lordly Might
  • Random tables to pad out the last few pages

Free OSR - Prison of the Hated Pretender (Low Level Adventure)

Prison of the Hated Pretender is a classic adventure from the OSR's Gus L. Priced at PWYW, it is a Platinum Best Seller at DTRPG with an excellent 4.8-star rating.

A sculpted tower's blank eyes stare down from the lonely in dry hills beyond the last withered turnip fields, the doorway in its eternally screaming mouth beckoning daredevils and foolish fortune hunters.  Haunted, shunned and anathema -- spending a night in The Prison of the Hated Pretender will certainly give you bragging rights in the coast's dusty hamlets, and if the rumors of ancient gold within are true enough to buy passage to a less wretched land.

Prison of the Hated Pretender is an introductory adventure for 4-6 characters levels 0-1. This new 2020 edition updates and streamlines the 2012 adventure (originally published on the Dungeon of Signs blog) and adds suggested guidance and playstyle notes to assist new Game Masters unfamiliar with the principles of classic play. It also includes conversion notes and statlines necessary for playing the adventure in both the classic (Basic) and most recent (Fifth) editions of the game.

A review of the original Prison of the Hated Pretender:

"As an introductory adventure this is great. The setting is a classic one. The monsters are wonderfully different. And there are hooks and mysteries. WONDERFUL hooks and mysteries. [...]  The mind races to find excuses to use this adventure. That’s a good supplement." -- Bryce Lynch, Ten Foot Pole"

Free OSR - The Count, the Castle, & the Curse (Low-Level OSR Adventure)

I get the most use out of low-level adventures, because it's rare that my campaigns get above 6th or 7th level. The Count, the Castle, & the Curse is for levels 1-3, and it is priced at PWYW, just up my alley.

An invitation from a Count whose name you’ve never heard. From a Castle in a land unknown around these parts. And a Curse which plagues him, pleading for each of your aid—by name—in exchange for an offer too tempting to ignore.

By next morning a horse-drawn carriage awaited each of you. The dark horses stood silent, their black eyes seeing everything and nothing. The sharp-collared driver shifted on his bench, mumbling to himself. You climbed in anyway.

The carriage lurched forward the moment you clicked the door shut.

The Count, the Castle, & the Curse is a tabletop roleplaying game adventure designed to be run in one single four-to-five hour session intended for player characters of low level (1-3) in which they must escape the Count and his haunted Castle before midnight, using their wits, skills, & perhaps a brooding Curse inside them to escape before their Stress Level climbs too high.

Designed to be used with most d20-focused rule systems in mind such as Shadowdark RPG. This adventure features several alternative rules to better suit the gothic horror themes presented within.

Free OSR - Temple of the Beggar King (OSE 9th-Level Adventure)

High-level adventures for old-school D&D are rare to find these days. Or any day. Let alone priced at PWYW. Temple of the Beggar-King fills that niche for OSE.

Temple of the Beggar-King is a level 9 Adventure for Advanced Old School Essentials. It requires Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy to play.

One-thousand years ago the royal guard of Leon III, the King of Kings, set out into the desert to find and destroy the stronghold of the mad prophet of the eastern wastes, the Beggar-King. Into the desert the royal guard, the hand of Leon, marched. It is not known what they encountered, just that they, and the Temple of the Beggar-King, have been lost to time ever since.

Temple of the Beggar-King is an exploration of the strange, often involving a dark interpretation of Buddhist themes and ideas. This adventure involves both elements of horror and violence, as well as high weirdness. It’s aim is to both horrify the players and leave them curious, to draw them deeper and deeper into it’s ensnaring mystery. Some Referee discretion is required as to whether or not this adventure would be appropriate at your table.

It will likely take several sessions to complete and involves the exploration of the ruined temple of an ancient cult. After ascending the Beggar-King has become entombed within it and has become something far stranger and deadly then his dark enlightenment would suggest.

Free OSR - B/X Frontiers (Modern/Sci-Fi Rules)

It's not often that B/X, or any OSR system for that matter (they are all 98 %+ compatible, you know), gets the Modern or Sci-Fi Era treatment. With B/X Frontiers, that's precisely what you get in toolkit form - use what you need, tweak what you like, and ignore what doesn't work in your game. Did I mention B/X Frontiers is FREE?

This system combines the simplicity of old-school B/X systems and uses them for fast-paced, gritty, modern, and future adventures.  At only 51 pages, this rules set is the perfect launch point for your own non-traditional B/X games, allowing for light rules that can easily be expanded upon to fit your own vision.

Review - Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 (PWYW OSR Adventurr)

Looking for a short, low-level distraction for your group? Maybe something to run at a gaming convention in a 3 to 4-hour time slot.? Look no further than Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 from Throwi Games.

I ran Under Tenkar's Tavern this morning at Central NY Con. With character generation for a party of six characters (using Swords & Wizardry Light), we brought the first level of the dungeon to a successful conclusion in about 3 1/2 hours. Objective achieved and fun had by all.

I would expect the full 3 levels to play out in about two sessions in a home campaign, with enough story hooks to keep your group coming back for more.

Priced at PWYW pricing, I'd give Under Tenkar's Tavern 4 1/2 beer steins. It's short, sweet, and easy to prep, and the price is right :)

Free OSR - Perilous Path of the Cursed Camel (OSE, SD, Cairn)

Yep. One PWYW adventure covers three systems - Old School Essentials, ShadowDark, and Cairn. Today's Free OSR Pick: Perilous Path of the Cursed Camel is an adventure for 2nd and 3rd-level characters that stands alone - it isn't written as part of a series, so you'll need to massage it into a campaign if that is how you are using it. To my eyes, it makes for a fine tournament adventure for conventions - now it's got me thinking...

What do you say when a bizarre camel appears and says you’re doomed to have your soul eaten by witches… unless you can steal as many ancient Relics as possible from all over the world in the next few hours?

…hopefully, you say: Let’s go!

Embark on a whirlwind tour of the strangest and deadliest places in the world as you search for a way to escape the Witches of Grome! Players have just 30 minutes to explore each location, negotiate with the locals, and find a Relic or two before they are transported to the next location.

GMs can choose how many locations they wish to play (of the 12 provided) in order to make the session run longer or shorter to meet their needs. Perfect for convention play!

THREE SYSTEMS

This adventure is written with simple keys for monsters and treasure, and provides handy one-page guides so that it can be played in three different systems:

  • Shadowdark
  • Old School Essentials
  • Cairn

Intended for a large party of Level 2 PCs, or a small party of Level 3 PCs

FLEXIBLE LENGTH

Each location is meant to be played for about 30 minutes of real time. There are 12 random locations to explore, plus the 13th final location where the PCs confront the Witches. Thus, the GM can easily choose how many locations they wish to play to precisely fit the time they have alloted for the session.

Free OSR - Cyber Sprawl Classics (DCC RPG)

I know. Goodman Games has been in the gaming news recently. This is a riff off of Goodman Games' DCC RPG. If you ever thought the DCC RPG would be a good fit for the Cyberpunk genre, Cyber Crawl Classics is for you.

You’re a Runner: a rigger, an infiltrator, a street samurai, a cool-headed hacker executing programs in the metaverse. You seek corruption and creds, winning it with console and chrome, bathed in the blood and filth of the oppresive, the megacorps, the police, and the artificial. There are payloads to be won deep in the Sprawl, and you shall have them.

Return to the glory days of cyberpunk with Cyber Sprawl Classics. Adventure as 1984 intended you to.

Free OSR - Wormwood (Setting - OSR Edition)

I'm a sucker for "historical" based settings. Make it free, and it's for me :) You can also grab Wormwood in a DCC RPG version. Wormwood is priced as Free.

"For the sun gave forth its light without brightness, like the moon, during the whole year.” So wrote Byzantine historian Procopius of the year 536 A.D., the year the first of three catastrophic volcanic eruptions in Iceland would drop global summer temperatures by 1.5 to 2.5 degrees Celsius and herald the beginning of the coldest decade on record in 2,000 years. Migrations of Germanic, Hunnic, and Slavic tribes have swept aside and now pick over the remains of the Western Roman Empire, sacking Rome itself and establishing a network of “barbarian kingdoms” across the west. Crop failure, famine, the Justinian Plague will devastate a fractured Europe for the next hundred years. Of all the time periods called the “Dark Ages,” this is surely - both literally and figuratively - the darkest.

This historical context is interwoven with both “authentic” medieval folklore and the classic elements of 19th- and 20th-century fantasy fiction found in your typical Appendix N. This ‘Dark Year’ and all of its tumultuous events provides players and Judges a compelling backdrop upon which to project historical fantasy adventures. While based upon historical context, these are works of fiction: liberties have been taken where doing so would be entertaining. Weave fiction and fantasy as you please, and above all: Fight On!

This book contains 95 pages of rules for: expanded character creation, cultures, languages, soubriquets, mass combat, social status, equipment, estates & strongholds, trade goods & services, crime, punishment & trials, medicines, poisons, and retainers - - everything referees and players could want to set their old-school fantasy role-playing campaigns within a 6th century Europe historical fantasy setting.

Free OSR - Tarnhelm's Tome of Wonder (An Original Edition Toolkit)

A bit of an OSR Kitchen Sink of a supplement, Tarnhelm's Tome of Wonder is a collection of optional rules for the OSR ruleset of your choice. New classes, new magic, psionics, super powers, and much, much more. Make sure this is in your toolbox, and use what you like and ignore the rest.

Tarnhelm's Tome of Wonder: An Original Edition Toolkit is large collection of optional rules and subsystems for the original 1974 (0e) version of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game (and modern clones), with a selection of new monsters, treasures and ideas for dungeon and wilderness hazards tossed in for good measure. Many of the optional rules are modern renditions of the better house rules the author used with his Original Edition games in the 1970s. This volume may be considered a revised and greatly expanded edition of our free Tarnhelm's Terrible Tome (from 2014) presented entirely as optional modules instead of as a supplement revising the game.

Tarnhelm's Tome of Wonder is full of options -- some of them mutually exclusive as they provide different ways of doing basically the same thing. It's a toolkit for an Original Edition Referee to select from to use as written or as a starting point for homebrewed material that better fits their needs.

  • Section I provides many optional rules and systems for Backgrounds and Talents, Heroic Characters, Psychic Gifts, Variant classes, Combat Stunts, Mobs, Hit Point Powered Magic, Common Magic, Divine Intervention, Funerals and Tombs, Mooks, Property and Finance, Psionics, Death and Dying, Encumbrance and Movement, Allegiance (replacing Alignment), Wound Points, and about 40 more!
  • Section II covers the “endgame” where PCs run their own domains and provides two systems: one simple and one more complex. Basic rules for mass combat are also provided.
  • Section III has more monsters (mythos monsters and human cultists) and guidelines for NPC adventuring groups.
  • Section IV provides over 18 pages of new treasures, including some designed for use with some of the optional rules in Section I.
  • Section V talks about “hazards” for both dungeons and wilderness areas.
  • Section VI provides two different system for mutations -- one simple, one complex. Although these guidelines are mainly intended for Referees to mutate monsters, these rules can work for mutated player characters.
  • Section VII gives a selection of comic book style superpowers designed to work with the Original Edition. While brief, experimental rules for superpowered PCs are included, this section is really for the Referee to model comic book superheroes should the PCs ever encounter any.
  • Section VIII gives some simple rules for firearms of different eras.

Free OSR - Return to Fel'Valashar (Swords & Wizardry Adventures)

Wow! Return to Fel'Valashar [Swords & Wizardry] was written for Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day way back in 2017. I kinda forgot that was a thing for a couple of years, even if I was the one to think it up. I'm curious what the flavor is now - a particular system, or maybe an OSR Appreciation Day...

Written in celebration of Swords and Wizardry Appreciation Day 2017, Return to Fel’Valashar picks up where Dungeons of Fel’Valashar left off.  In this book is a collection of mini dungeon adventures with a small region called Fel’Valashar that they take place within. Each of these adventures is written in such a way that they don’t have any ties to each other or to Fel’Valashar. This means you can easily drop them into your own world with no fuss.

Includes:

  • Details of the south-western region of Fel’Valashar.
  • Four mini dungeon adventures.
  • New monsters.
  • New magic items.

The Companion Expansion (not to be confused with the B/X Companion) is an add-on for OSR rulesets with new classes, new spells, new creatures, new magic items, and more. Did I mention it was PWYW?

Also includes expanded spell lists for three free "retro-clone" rulebooks and expanded combat, saving throw, and other tables. Free OSR - Winds of the Ice Forest (LL Adventure)

I prefer low-level adventuring (and lower-level campaign play overall). Once you get to high-level play, off-the-shelf adventures often fail to be an appropriate challenge for your group of players (too easy or too difficult), and things can get a bit swingy. Low-level play is where it is at IMHO.

Winds of the Ice Forest is a low-level (levels 1 to 3) adventure for Labyrinth Lord. The fact that it is a J.V. West-written (and drawn) adventure has me downloading as I type! ;)

The dreaded Ice Forest! Once a safe passage to the north, now the forest's evil magic seeks to trap and confuse travelers with ever-shifting paths full of terrible dangers. New monsters, new magic items, new magics!

This adventure for character levels 1-3 was designed for Labyrinth Lord but can be used with any old school dungeon-crawling RPG. It is a drop-in locale that can be played through in a few hours or in a much longer session...per the needs of your gaming group.

Free OSR - Cavern of the Creeping Terror (3rd Level OSR Adventure)

Cavern of the Creeping Terror is an OSR adventure, loosely based on "The Glus from Deltora Quest, the arctic horror of The Thing, and Grendel’s mother’s lair from Beowulf". I can reference two out of three (Deltora Quest is new to me). For PWYW, I've added Cavern of the Creeping Terror to my collection of Ready-To-Go adventures.

Undead frost pirates, mad imprisoned fae, and a pile of loot guarded by a monstrous slug...

A third level OSR adventure featuring a three-tiered, 22 cavern dungeon adaptable for fantasy roleplaying systems with a light horror aesthetic. Includes:

  • A system neutral bestiary
  • A horde of loot for greedy adventurers
  • Possibility for diplomacy, betrayal, and a seaside village on the precipice of destruction

Inspired by Beowulf, The Thing, and Deltora Quest.

"This adventure delivers that evocative style over and over again...This one has the spirit of D&D..."

- Bryce Lynch, tenfootpole.org. Ranked "The Best"
