The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 66 - AD&D 1e PH put me to Sleep - No Save ;)

Sleep is one of the most powerful spells at low-level AD&D. At high levels, it is near worthless. I poke around the Sleep spell today. Hopefully, I don't awake any sleeping bears ;)
In today's episode, I look at the Sleep spell in AD&D and how it is handled in some of the retroclones.

Color Map Available for The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle (New Download Link)

Map by Ian Christy
This map is gorgeous! You really should grab it :)

Seriously, it's my desktop background now.

We have a new link to grab all things Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle. It is:

tenkars-tavern.games/TheBlackIsle

It's now linked to a folder, so it is much easier to add new things (like the above map) and update the PDF file.

Notice, its NOT a bit.ly link. Apparently, you can't edit your bit.ly links unless you are paying 99 bucks a year.

The above link is hosted by Rebrandly.com.  For 2 bucks for the first year (25 to renew I do believe), I now have the tenkars-tavern.games domain for my redirects. I'll be updating links for Swords & Wizardry Light and some other stuff moving forward using the tenkars-tavern.games domain.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 65 - The Tavern Wins a No-Prize & The Black Isle

A smallish rant and some background on how The Black Isle setting came to be.
I talk about why The Tavern (in any of its forms) will never win an award. More importantly, I talk about the free, crowdsourced sandbox setting, The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle.

The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle (A Free Crowd-sourced Fantasy Sandbox Setting)

I'm sitting here at my desk, simply amazed at what I am looking at. I had this silly little vision, this idea of crowd-sourcing a sandbox setting. What you see now is so beyond that vision I had. My touch on this is small, I got the ball rolling and then work threw me a curve ball that caught me off balance until retirement. A HUGE thank you to Milton Murphy for taking over the reins of the project. A better project manager you couldn't find. A shout out to Jed McClure, for putting the pieces together as you see here. Of course, thanks to all that contributed. I am forever in your debt.  Erik Tenkar

Christmas in July Sale - OSR Picks - The ENnie Nominations

Its that time of the year - Christmas in July! I'll be offering up what I think are some of the better OSR picks in the sale, but today I'm highlighting the ENnie nominations that are OSR or Old School by nature. Link to full Christmas in July Sale

The Dark of Hot Springs Island - "The Dark of Hot Springs Island is the game master's book. It is a fully illustrated 192 page book. Hot Springs Island is a hexcrawl, and the Dark contains all the details needed to run a sandbox game there. There are 75 locations on the island, and 26 maps ranging from ogre villages to a ruined elven city to the volcanic lair of a vain efreet. Seven factions, 87 interconnected non-player characters and 300 problematic treasures are sure to generate plenty of lingering repercussions each time your players make a decision. Finally, 448 random events and encounter motivations help ensure that every play-through of Hot Springs Island can explode into wildly different outcomes from the same basic parameters. The setting is system neutral, so there are no stats for monsters or prepackaged treasure parcels. No levels are assumed, and there is no path of advancement through this tropical wilderness."  4.99  3.74

Operation Unfathomable - I have this and oh so much want to run this - Tenkar "OPERATION UNFATHOMABLE is a 108-page, internally-consistent, gonzo funhouse module for Swords & Wizardry that runs like a subterranean wilderness trek instead of a “down the 10 foot hall and kick in a door” affair. There are random elements aplenty to keep GMs guessing as well as players. No balanced encounters to be found here, but the clever setup allows low level characters to drop into the dungeon “deep end” and still have a chance of making it out alive—if they’re smart and wary."  12.00  9.00

The Midderlands - OSR Bestiary and Setting - Not only do I have this, but I have the Midderlands Expanded - top notch - Tenkar - "The Midderlands is an old-school game setting with bestiary for use with old-school role-playing games. It is based on Swords & Wizardry Complete, but could easily be used with other old-school systems and even non-OSR systems such as D&D or Pathfinder. It is a green-hued, dark-fantasy, late-middle ages, early-renaissance view through grime-smeared spectacles. The setting itself is based on an area in the middle of England near where I live called The Midlands. Many of the locations are loosely based on reality, but others are pure fantasy from an addled mind. The setting part of the book contains something I call "game-juice". Not heavy of history and monotonous detail, but enough to get the game-juices flowing and let the game master twist and tweak as they need to in order to fit their campaign."   15.69  11.77

Fever Swamp - "The air is moist. The moisture mixes with your sweat — the heat is relentless. The drone of insects gives you headaches, and the fever from the infected wounds has left you delirious. Your raft is damaged, and there are spirits in the trees. You’ve only been here for three days. Fever Swamp is a hex-crawl sandbox adventure compatible with Lamentations of the Flame Princess and most other Dungeons & Dragons clones. Fever Swamp was written by Young Master Luke Gearing, previously famed for his contributions to the world's favourite outsider role-playing 'zine, The Undercroft, and illustrated by Andrew Walter, who surreptitiously inserted sigil magic into his work on our previous publication, Crypts of Indormancy, to uncertain ends. We encourage you to purchase and investigate it for yourself, for the greater good."  7.85  5.88

The rest of the OSR ENnies nominations that aren't on sale, and other ENnies nominations (which may or may not be on sale), can be found here.

Those are affiliate links above. A portion of the monies you spend via The Tavern's affiliate links goes to support The Tavern. I thank you :)

The Tavern's Patreon has been Updated - Erik Tenkar is creating Old School Gaming News and Community Building

Yep, the overhaul of The Tavern's Patreon was long overdue, as The Tavern is not about content creation (though there is some of that). Instead, it's about gaming news and community. The community that has formed at The Tavern in its various forms it what keeps me doing "this" (whatever "this" is) every day and I enjoy every moment of it.

What follows is the support levels and goals (goals are no longer based on monies pledged but the number of backers, a much better fit for The Tavern):
Tip Your Bartender
$1.50 or more per month
A hearty tip for your bartender! I thank you! The community thanks you.
Backer Blog Roll
$3 or more per month
Backer Blog Roll - If you are a blogger and back at this level, I'll highlight your blog on a special Backer Blog Roll.
Discord Patreons
$4.50 or more per month
You'll have a special title and color on the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server telling the community your are a backer of Tenkar's Tavern. Additional benefit is a position on the Backer Blog Roll
Let's Talk
$10 or more per month
A private weekly voice chat with members of the Let's Talk level or higher. Day of week and time will be announced prior to the chat. We will use Discord. Length of Chat 30 minutes plus. Includes Discord rewards
Royalty
$20 or more per month
Your are Royalty. Suggest a topic(s) for the daily podcast and I'll try and get it done. Includes benefits of all prior level Includes Discrd rewards.
Patreon of the Podcast
$25 or more per month
Sponsor the Tavern Chat Podcast for a week. Get a mention at the beginning of the episode as a sponsor and get a link on the blog post sharing the episode. Additionally, all bonuses from prior levels apply. Includes Discord rewards.
As for goals:
When we hit 25 supporters a month, a minimum of 5% of the monies raised will be Kicked Forward to other RPG related gaming projects on Patreon. - Reached
When we hit 50 supporters a month, I'll add a monthly "off hours Tavern Chat" on the Discord Server to accommodate members of the community from across the pond.
When we hit 100 supporters a month, Feltothraxis, the infamous Dragon Puppet known for knocking a certain well known OSR product off of a porch would return in a series of videos if this goal is met. All hail Feltothraxis!
When we hit 150 supporters a month, I'll organize an informal online old school gaming convention via Discord and Roll20. Run by gamers for gamers. As long as this goal is met, I'll organize such a con once a year.
When we hit 250 supporters a month - If we hit this "unreachable goal", I'll organize an informal online old school gaming convention via Discord and Roll20 four times a year - once per season. Run by gamers for gamers. As long as this goal is met, I'll organize such a con once a season. Additionally, I'll run at least one session each time for backers of The Tavern.
Personally, I really want to see TenCon or Tavern Con, so 150 supporters is the level where I get dreamy eyed.

For the goals, its not dollars but supporters. Your buck-fifty carries as much weight as someone sponsoring the podcast.

The Tavern in all of its forms - the blog, the Facebook Community, the Discord Server and the daily Tavern Chat podcast, will always be free and The Tavern will remain a Neutral Ground.

There is no obligation. If you can support, great. If you can't, that's fine too. Above all, enjoy and participate and make it yours.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode #63 - #ConManKen - Ken Can't "Shut Up Shutting Up"

Ah, so Bugs Bunny isnt the only one that cant "shut up shutting up". This will not end well. It will, however, be entertaining as all hell.

State of the Tavern - Two Years Later - Am I Still Retired?

Two years ago today I officially went from payroll to pension. Not surprisingly, it allowed me to put a greater focus on The Tavern itself in all of its forms. Oh, and a small project called Swords & Wizardry Light ;)

The Tavern's Facebook Community has reached over 2,100 members in less than three years.

The Tavern's Discord Server has over 650 members and is very active.

The Tavern Chat Podcast has over 60 consecutive daily episodes available. Another episode tomorrow morning.

Then there is this very blog, on pace for another 800 post year.

Of course, being listed on the new Frog God Website as the Frog Convention Coordinator was icing on the cake.

Onward and upward! :)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 62 - Kicking it with Kickstarter - July 17, 2018

#ConManKen - Kenny Mobilizes his Army of Five - no, Six Followers...

So, #ConManKen is mobilizing his social media army of a half dozen peeps to take down Louis.

Ken has thrown down the gauntlet. I see a challenge for members of the Tavern's Community. Can we mobilize more than an army of six?

I'm looking for #ConManKen memes. Email me at tenkarsDOTtavern at that gmail thing. When I have enough I'll post them here for folks to share to the larger gaming comunity.

Feel free to "sign up" for the #ConManKen Bowel Movement by posting a comment below ;)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 61 - #ConManKen - Marcus Can't Shut Up Either

My God, the rabbit hole just get's deeper and deeper. I know Marcus thinks he's helping Ken but he's just confirming things that weren't fully confirmed before.

The #ConManKen Saga just gets more and more entertaining. With today's episode, Ken's enabler Marcus reveals and confirms more than he planned in a series of emails with Louis.

Hi Marcus,
I saw that you left me a note on one of the boards (http://www.tenkarstavern.com/2018/04/ken-whitman-youve-been-served.html?m=1), so I am sending you this email to ask if you still hold the note on the comic book store, Little Monsters and Comics?

If you do hold the note, I would be interested in purchasing that note from you if we could come to terms to do so.

The first part of the conversation is that I would need to understand exactly what the note is for and what it is secured by. If you have any documentation that would be helpful also.

Take care,
Louis J. Desy Jr.

Oh, I remember this nozzle now.  He never called (more precisely I don't know if he ever called, but I never spoke to him), and I never saw his email, either.  My filter is turned up, I have had this email address for 19 years, and get a ton of junk.

This is the guy who was speculating that you were my financier for my store, and was accusing me of receiving money from your kickstarters to finance my store.  I told him to call me, because I didn't want to put anything else into text he could misquote, again.
Fuck that guy.  Guy thinks some shit up, and then posts it, what a douchebag.  By the way, Louis, Jon Huston was my partner.  The guy who owns Troll And Toad, post some stupid shit about him and see how fast you are homeless and penniless.

Ken, you saved my life, and though you piss me off badly sometimes, if this guy is telling you I ever entertained the notion of selling him your note, that is bullshit.

Don't let this guy get you all twisted up, enjoy your life, and enjoy working for your girlfriend.

Louis, if you want a statement from me about this, you can ask nicely and get a lot more cooperation than posting nasty shit online.  I don't know what kind of people you usually deal with, but I have heard you aren't even a lawyer anymore, so...  Unless You have some proof that I owe you money, you can quit posting about me on the internet as a way of virtue signaling to others how you are taking on big bad Ken.

Ken is broke, so kicking a guy when he is down doesn't make you anything but a bully.

On Jul 4, 2018, at 2:26 PM, Louis J Desy Jr  wrote:

What is the meaning of this?

I didn't email you earlier since I didn't see the message until recently since I had expected after a few days there would be no more postings to that thread and only accidently saw your message with contact information while looking for other information a few days ago. My contact information is all over the place plus the court filings list my full address and email address so you could have easily sent me a message plus Whitman is well aware of my email address if you had asked him.

I finally had time to send you a message; and you reply by insulting me?

As far as my speculations in public, many people can understand why you would want to help Whitman from your past friendship and help he gave you over the years, but are completely baffled as to why you would allow someone that has systematically stolen from everyone he has come into contact with over the last decade or two a safe place to operate from, continue his cons, and all the while run the risk that Whitman will steal everything that is not nailed down from you and the store and your business partner. So far it appears that Whitman has not stolen from you (or has but no details have come out yet but there was some mention in a posting about a problem with the arrangement) but the general consensus is that it is only a matter of time before Whitman does steal from you. If Whitman never steals from you, then I do wonder why you seem to be the one and only person that Whitman would not steal from since as far a I can tell, everyone that Whitman has come into contact from at least the mid 1990s and on has been sorry that they ever dealt with him.

These people that Whitman has ruined over the past years includes running his wife (now exwife?) into bankruptcy in 2013 with him and then charging thousands of dollars onto the charge card of a woman that he went on cruise with, probably with Kickstarter funds, from one of the Kickstarter projects.

Now there was all kinds of moving of assets once my lawsuit started, and it seems strange that your partner seems to be no where to be found or has any comment on any of this. Whitman appears to have been using the store that you sold to him to start running more cons, including selling fake Walking Dead memorabilia and now the store has allegedly been sold to Whitman's new girlfriend, Jess Hunter, but Whitman appears to be working there most days and even is at the top of the Facebook page for the store today. It is telling that the LLC that the store was claimed to have been sold to did not exist until after the sale was announced and one of the web sites tracking all of this made a posting about it.

That and more is why I wonder what is going on, since none of it makes any sense. To me it looks like there is not just one plan to shift assets around, but two plans of people moving assets to avoid a lawsuit and something else.

And things like your reaction with your email are why people wonder what is going on!

So, tell me, is this whole story about the note on the comic book store true or is it just another Whitman 'fairy tale' that you went along with?

Right now I am still in a somewhat forgiving mood, and willing to play the part of monsignor and take confessions, and grant forgiveness for any ‘misrepresentations’ at this point; but the time for such confessions is rapidly nearing a close, so if there is something that you should or want to confess and be granted absolution for, the time is now.

What about your partner, maybe he would be interested in being bought out for his share of the business? I think he may be interested in selling, especially considering how you act when someone contacts you about buying what may turn out to be an almost worthless note on a business that people claim is losing money.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Flash Humble Bundle Giveaway - Humble Book Bundle: Chuck Tingle Humbles our Bundle

Zach G was the only entry in the prior Flash Giveaway, so it was an easy gift to giveaway ;)

Next up. Humble Book Bundle: Chuck Tingle Humbles our Bundle.

From Wikipedia:
Dr. Chuck Tingle is a pseudonymous author of gay niche erotica. He self-publishes his works through Amazon.com, primarily as ebooks, but also as paperbacks and audiobooks (narrated by Sam Rand). Tingle began his career by writing dinosaur erotica and expanded to stories based on unicorns, Bigfeet, and various anthropomorphized objects and even concepts. The bizarre nature of Tingle's writing has led to his developing a cult reputation.
Listen, not my cup of tea. Maybe not yours even. Maybe you know someone that would enjoy this collection of stories and books.

Want a chance at the bundle? Comment below by 3pm eastern time, tomorrow - Monday, July 16th. I'll choose a random commenter.

Hey, free prizes are free prizes!

Yep, that's an affiliate link above. Just so you know if you go to Humble Bundle and buy something via the link, you help support The Tavern.

Repackaging Freely Available Stock Art for Money - Arcana Stock Art

A few days ago a new company popped up on OneBookShelf - Arcana Stock Art. Now, I live grabbing stock art even if I rarely use most of what I have rights to - simply awesome to have when I want to get creative.

Sine Nomine (Kevin Crawford) released the art from his Kickstarters to the public domain. Guess who has repackaged the color pieces from the various Kickstarters and put it in a single bundle (PWYW with a suggested price of $4.99?) You guessed it - Arcana Stock Art. Alright, you don't need to pay for it and it is convenient.

But then I looked deeper.

They have other stock art bundles. All composed of pieces of art released under various Creative Commons Licenses. These bundles aren't free. These bundles cost anywhere from 5 to 10 bucks - to buy art that is already out there for free.

It might be legal but it certainly feels sleazy. If they were all PWYW, its a convenience and you can tip the guy who bundled it as such it wouldn't feel like a con. Charging flat out for the bundle of otherwise free art? Shit, look the art up with a reverse Google Art Lookup and grab it from the artist as was intended.

Art and license from Chtulhu Art Pack 2

Yep, those are affiliate links above. DON'T but the art linked but do feel free to look at the "publisher's page" and see what I'me referring to first hand. If you buy something else later from OBS I'll be happy to see change go in my tip jar, just not from this "publisher".

Flash Humble Bundle Giveaway - HUMBLE BOOK BUNDLE: VIRTUAL REALITY BY SPRINGER NATURE

Truly, a flash giveaway. I have a code for the $15 bundle of Virtual Reality by Springer Nature - must be claimed within 21 hours of this post going live, so about 15 hours from being awarded. Comment below and I'll pick a random winner right around 11 PM Eastern tonight. (if you put your email in the comment, I'll get your code out that much quicker - spell out the "@" as "at" and the "." as "dot" - helps avoid most scrubbers roaming the net for email addresses)

I'll have another flash giveaway of another Humble Bundle bundle in the AM.

Yep, that's an affiliate link above. Just so you know if you go to Humble Bundle and buy something via the link, you help support The Tavern.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 60 - #ConManKen has a Villain Monologue Moment

We've all seen it. James Bond has heard it countless times. Batman has too. The Villain Monologue Moment. Whether its bragging or a need to be understood, in fiction I feel it is oft overused. It does happen in real life. Thank you #ConManKen. Your entertainment value is damn near endless.
You know in movies and comics, when the villain has to explain themselves, their motivation and the details fo their plan to the hero they are about to (attempt to) kill? Well, Ken's been having those moments. Stranger than fiction.
