Top Five RPGs - Spring 2018 - From ICv2 - 5e #1 -Starfinder #2?

I'm not surprised by D&D 5e being in the #1 spot. I AM surprised by Starfinder in the #2 Spot. Not even sure I know about Genesys...

#ConManKen Comes Clean - He IS the Biggest Loser

When all you do is lie, when you suddenly come clean and tell the truth, it's almost too incredible to believe. Yet the evidence is clear, Ken Whitman lost / misplaced / broke two 4 TB hard drives that contained KotDT: LAS and possibly other videos from other Kickstarters BEFORE Gen Con 2015 and the KotDT Release Party.

The attempted shakedown of Kenzer Co for an extension to Ken's contract at the end of 2017 in return for the HD video? All bluster. There WAS no video. It was already gone.

The court case is basically done. There is nothing to be recovered.

Huge thanks to Louis Desy - without you, we'd never have closure. Without you, Kenny would still be lying.

Link to latest court update:  https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/fbem/DocumentDisplayServlet?documentId=nWcYcjVwzRXtn7pcdY4bDQ==&system=prod

From Louis Desy (highlighting is me):
If we assume that Whitman is lying about the files being gone, but no one can get him to tell them what he wants to turn the raw footage over, none of anything going on makes sense.
BUT once we realize that Whitman is telling the truth to some people at times about the files being gone, then everything he has done and is doing makes perfect sense.
It also explains why no matter what I did over the months, including offers of money, I could never get Whitman to name a price or say what he wanted to turn over the raw footage. Why? Because if Whitman named a price, and I said OK, and sent ZOE to make the transfer, it would have been discovered that Whitman had been lying about having the raw footage and lying to make it look like he was holding it hostage.
It is also why Whitman only told me late yesterday afternoon the number of devices and what happened to each. Whitman figures, as I did, that the case was going forward and it was going to now come out that he was lying about still having the footage shortly. If Kickstarter PBC had filed their appearance and motions several hours earlier yesterday, and Whitman had seen them, Whitman would have continued to refuse to detail the number of devices and what happened to each. On this I got lucky in how the timing played out plus Whitman start to cave on the court issue. Where last week Whitman was telling me that 'I want you to have to drive to court in New York', then on Monday, after I had given up on getting either defendant to do anything on appearing in person for about the Preliminary Conference, Whitman is all of a sudden calling the court clerk about arranging a telephone conference for the Preliminary Conference? Whitman is 'crying' in his filings that his car can't make the trip and he is so broke that he can't afford the trip, yet still will not try to get money for transferring the files? This is probably the most sincere and truthful any of us have ever seen Whitman in a long while. Whitman was not telling a 'sob story' in the hope of getting the court to agree to a telephone conference, his car is probably really not suitable for any long distance travel and Whitman was starting to fear that the case was going to require personal appearances in New York at some point and he was not capable of such a trip, even later this year, in all probability.
As more examples of how 'the files are really gone' makes sense and answers the questions as to why Whitman is acting the way he does:
1: Offer of ZOE to make the transfer. ZOE had a standing offer to make the transfer whenever Whitman would agree to allow that to happen, They even offered to have someone drive to where the files were and make the transfer. All of this was going to be FREE to Whitman, BUT Whitman refuses to let this happen and will not tell anyone anything he wants, why?
Answer: Because the files are gone. Whitman can't agree to this because ZOE would find out the files were gone.
2: I try for months to get Whitman to say what he wants, but Whitman never says anything definite or keeps making excuses as to why and how he can't do a transfer to anyone and talks in circles all the time on issues, why?
Answer: Because the files are gone. Whitman can't tell me what he wants, because if I give it to him, I will find out the files are gone.
3: I ask Jolly plus Kenzer and Company if Whitman wants anything. There are reports that Whitman wants to sign another contract but that Whitman wants to bar Jolly plus Kenzer and Company from talking about the project for five years, plus who knows what else, why?
Answer: Because the files are gone. Whitman has to name terms that Jolly plus Kenzer and Company would never agree to because if they did agree, they would find out the files are gone. Whitman also asks for something that makes little to no sense, what difference does it make it if Jolly or Kenzer and Company talk about the mess, over 3,000 people know and it is all over the place, yet somehow one is to believe that it would really help Whitman if they stopped talking (if they do at all) online about the project? Plus, once it came out that the files were gone, any talking online by Jolly or Kenzer and Company would pale in comparison to the fact that Whitman lost the files.
4: Whitman is offered 20 hours per week to work on the project by Marcus King, at Marcus King's expense, but Whitman turns King down, why?
Answer: Because the files are gone. At least for KODT:LAS, Whitman CAN'T work on that project because he does not have the files anymore. If Whitman takes Marcus King up on the offer, eventually Marcus King will wonder why no progress is being made on KODT:LAS, which Whitman can't make any progress on if there are no files to work with.
5: Whitman is asked multiple times by various people but changes his answer as to whether or not the files exist, why?
Answer: Because the files are gone. Whitman can't have people believing and knowing that he is so incompetent that he lost files that can not be recreated, but he can't just out and out tell everyone they are gone, Whitman has to be evasive as to whether or not they exist so no one is really sure of the status of the files. Which makes no sense when it is clear Whitman is broke but will not even name a price to transfer the files, but DOES make sense once you realize the files are gone and Whitman CAN'T deliver the files for any amount of money!
6: Why doesn't Whitman try to negotiate a price for the transfer of all of the raw footage?
Answer: Because the files are gone. If Whitman names a price, and someone meets that price, they will find out Whitman does not have the files anymore.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 75 - You Say its My Birthday

State of the Tavern Keeper - July 29th, 2018 - You Say it My Birthday, But Not for Another Few Hours...

Tomorrow, in a few short hours, I turn 51. For some reason, turning 51 has more meaning to me than turning 50.

Why?

As I turn 51, its the first birthday that I am truly a member of Team Frog God.

As I turn 51, I have added a moderately successful daily podcast to the mix.

As I turn 51, I no longer see myself primarily as a cop, or retired cop, but an active and contributing member of the OSR. I am forever grateful and humbled by the community that has formed around The Tavern.

As I turn 51, I suddenly have an understanding of my own mortality. Being a cop, at least a successful one usually means believing in your own immortality. I no longer have that illusion clouding my vision, and each day is more precious with my new clarity.

I started blogging at the age of 42, a few months short of my 43rd birthday. For the handful that have been around all that time, I am in your debt. For those that have joined the ride along the way, know that I plan on continuing doing what I've been doing over the past few years, just more so.

As for another 51 years...

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 74 - Why I Turned Down Working on an Amazing KS

There are some offers that are nearly too good to turn down. When I do turn them down, the reason is simple. You.
It's never easy saying no to working on a project that looks to be very exciting, with a publisher that has a very strong Kickstarter history. Here's why I did so - for the second time. I blame you ;)

Wayward Kickstarter - Far West - Time to Punt - Yet Again - Anyone Surprised in the Least?

I was TRYING really hard to give Gareth the benefit of the doubt. I figured I'd give him some breathing room. I'd let him meet his latest deadline without any pressure or comments from me.

What does he do?

The same as always. Fails to meet said deadline and punts.

Oh, and the sympathy grab for NOT going to Gen Con. Who gives a fuck? Really? I say he hits seven years late with nothing to show for it. That's merely 6 more months. Gareth has been doing that for six and a half years without a sweat. This should be no different.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 73 - #ConManKen Plans a Road Trip - I Give Advice ;)

I find it amazing that for a man that insists on a daily basis that he is no longer going to communicate with the person suing him, and repeatedly claiming he is being harassed by said individual, Ken continues to communicate. That in and of itself pretty much invalidates any claims of harassment.

Ken Whitman is Ken Whitman's #1 Enemy ;)
Ah yes, #ConManKen heads to NYC on Wednesday, August 1st to respond to his civil suit. Assuming he even goes, I remind Ken that IF his driver's license is suspended (likely) how best to avoid arrest. Also, Ken's plans for bankruptcy and submission of misleading documentation and evidence. Oh my!

#ConManKen - Can't Even Bother to Spellcheck his Submissions to Court - Kenny, Did You Perjure Yourself?

Ah, #ConManKen, AKA Ken "Whit" Whitman. Look Ma! Here's what Kenny submitted as evidence in his civil court case.

Now, ignoring the horrible spelling and grammar (making it "authentic Ken") look at the submitted image. (note - court documentation provided by the NotAnotherDime blog - the place for all things #ConManKen)

Now, let's peek at the ORIGINAL image:

Note - not the promised HQ release. Not pressed by Kenny. Not edited by Kenny. Not Shipped by Kenny. "Rescued" because Kenny failed at his obligations. That isn't "allegedly", those are facts.

Let's end with some words of wisdom from our very own "#conManKen:

Gee, I hope Kenny brings his game face to court next Wednesday. Ah, man, I need to get a press pass. ;)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 72 - Finding Flumphs & More in the AD&D Fiend Folio

Yep. A number of folks have reached out to me, commented on the blog or social media, that the rabbit with a horn - the Al-mi'raj - that I mentioned on last night's post was an "actual mythological creature". I'll accept that point. Doesn't make it any less goofy for a D&D campaign ;P
Yep, I'm diving into the AD&D 1e Fiend Folio in this episode, looking for the silly, goofy and downright bizarre. Amazingly enough, I only made it as far as "Flumph".

Why is The AD&D 1e Fiend Folio Such a Rabbit Hole?

Rabbit? Check!

Horn? Check!

Rabbit with large, unbalancing horn sticking out from its forehead?

Nope, don't have that yet. Let's call it an Al-Mi'Raj. Who wants to draw one? It needs to look menacing!

Sadly, for every Slaad we have a Al-Mi'Rsj. For every Githyanki, we have two Flumphs.

Yep, tomorrow morning's podcast will be fun ;)

Deal of the Day - The Scenario from Ontario (2018 ENnie Nominated)

Today's Deal of the Day is solidly in the OSR camp of things, as it consists of two scenarios written for Lamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy (but usable with the other OSR systems) - The Scenario from Ontario.

Normally 9.50 in PDF, until tomorrow morning at 11 AM Eastern time, it's on sale for 3.80.
The Scenario from Ontario is the result of a 24 hour writing competition between Kiel Chenier (Blood in the Chocolate, Hell House Beckons, and others) and Zzarchov Kowolski (Scenic Dunnsmouth, The Gnomes of Levnec, and others).
Two separate adventures written with the prompt of "Maple Syrup" were combined with professional art, layout, and cartography.
Yep, that's an affiliate link above. Affiliate links support The Tavern and keep the lights on. I thank you in advance.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 71 - Reminiscing about the AD&D 1e Fiend Folio

Ah, the AD&D 1e Fiend Folio. Amazing cover art. Some amazing content. Other content, not so much. It did, however, teach me the proper meaning of "HD" for monsters ;)
The AD&D 1e Fiend Folio holds a special place in my personal gaming history - it was the first time I ever saw HD defined for monsters. My players never had it so good as when I thought 4+1 HD was 5 HP. Doh!
The quality of the creatures included ranges from awesome to WTF!?!, but you knew that, right? :)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 69 - 7/24/18 Kickstarter Roundup & 2 New 5e Settings

I know folks are disappointed that Greyhawk was not the setting released to the GM's Guild yesterday (I know I shared in the disappointment) but I'd prefer to see it in its original form anyway.
Yep, WotC has gone and done it. Eberron is the new setting up on the DM's Guild and the Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica releases in hardcover in the fall.
As far as Kickstarters, we look at City of Brass, The Fantasy Trip, The GM's Tarot and All Weather Dice Tubes. Oh My!

Kickstarter - The Fantasy Trip RPG (Steve Jackson Games - Funded in Hours - Blowing through Stretch Goals)

I've been looking forward to The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter from the moment I heard it was in the works. More accurately, the moment Steve Jackson regained the rights. Apparently, that applies to others too, as it literally funded in hours. As I type this it is well over $55k in funding (with a $20k goal left in the dust).

So, what's in the Legacy Box? ($60 pledge level)

  • The two original mini-games, Melee and Wizard, each in its own mini-box.
  • The three roleplaying books (In The Labyrinth, Advanced Melee, and Advanced Wizard), combined and updated into a single volume of 160 pages, with the index that the original release lacked.
  • The classic dungeon-crawl adventure, Tollenkar’s Lair, with a full-color labyrinth map.
  • Maybe more, depending on what stretch goals are reached.
The Legacy Box is definitely the sweet point to back. Although, for $30 you can back for just the two mini-games - Melee and Wizard - and forgo the extras.

Damn it! They've already blown through their stretch goals. We need more! Steve! Phil! Get on that! ;)

I have an interview ready to be posted about The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter. Steve himself was gracious enough to answer my questions. If you have any questions, comment below and I'll see if I can get answers and I'll add them to the interview :)

#ConManKen - Marketing Genie for Swords & Wizardry (Complete / Light) - Episode 68 of The Tavern Chat Podcast

Hey, what we got here is a "dual purpose post" ;)

Seriously, I wrote up the Marketing Genie for Swords & Wizardry last night for posting today, then realized that the process I used to create the Marketing Genie applies to how I create pretty much all of my creatures for Swords & Wizardry, so why not do an episode going through the process.
In today's episode, I describe the process I use to create creatures in Swords & Wizardry, in this instance, a #ConManKen inspired Marketing Genie.
Link to Episode 68https://anchor.fm/tavernchat/episodes/Episode-68---ConManKen---Creating-a-Marketing-Genie-for-SW-e1ro43

Marketing Genie - By David Leroy - used under the CC BY 3.0 license
Ah, the mystical, magical backwater Marketing Genie. If one didn't know better, they might suspect they had come in contact with some backwoodsman that had avoided contact with sentient creatures for the last dozen-odd years, but they would be sorely mistaken. No, despite their disheveled appearance and "natural" odor, there is much more here than is seen by the naked eye (or smelled by even the most sensitive noses).

The threat of a Marketing Genie is that one underestimates what one sees. In truth, although quick to engage in conversation, they only make nonsensical statements in an effort to confuse their opponents (When engaging a Marketing Genie in any kind of discourse, Save or suffer -4 to all actions for 1d6 rounds. Succesful save causes rage in the opponent, +2 to all attacks against the Marketing Genie for 1d6 rounds)

The main attack of a Marketing Genie is its breath weapon - it can emit a foul odor causing all within a 15' radius to save or be unable to take any actions for 1d6 rounds, followed by 1d6 rounds of all actions at -2. In combat, a Marketing Genie prefers flight to fight and will flee combat at the first opportunity. If forced to fight, it attacks as a second level creature for 1d6-2 damage (minimum 1 point) and will complain continuously about old football injuries.

If one is able to successfully capture a Marketing Genie, it will promise its captor one wish, which it says it will grant when the stars align and the moon is bright and the dew falls at just the right... in any case, a situation that will never occur. Such it is with a Marketing Genie.

Additional power, only one in six Marketing Genies have the following ability:

Threats. When confronted with the possibility of combat, the Marketing Genie will make threats about summoning the Fantasy Beast Inquisitors to deal with troublemakers. This is an empty threat; as the Marketing Genie has no such special power at its disposal. (thanks to Adam M)

Marketing Genie

ARMOR CLASS   5 [14]
HIT DICE   4
TOTAL HIT BONUS   +2 (see above)
ATTACKS   Fists 1d6-2 (minimum 1 point)
SAVING THROW 10 (save bonus due to pure obstinance)
SPECIAL - breath weapon, confusion
MOVEMENT 12 / 15 when fleeing combat

New PWYW Release - Unsung Heroes (Barrel Rider Games / Swords & Wizardry)

When James Spahn releases a new product, everyone on the OSR turns their head to see what it is. And if they don't, they should ;)

Untold Adventures is James' houseruling of the S&W White Box rules. It is damn sweet and was released at PWYW pricing and should be on every OSR gamer's digital game shelf. Go ahead, grab a copy, I'll wait,

Unsung Heroes is 18 pages of optional rules for Untold Adventures BUT is pretty much out of the box usable with ANY of the Swords & Wizardry flavors, from Light to Complete. Probably Labyrinth Lord too. Damn but its good!

Did I mention that Unsung Heroes is also priced at PWYW?

You know you want it...

The Tavern has Three New Patrons This Week

The revamp of The Tavern's Patreon is going well. I'd like to send personal thanks out to:

Anthony C, Sam C, and Laramie W

Yourselves and those like you are huge assets to the community and I personally really appreciate it. Every backer helps me do more of the things I enjoy doing for the community and hopefully everyone benefits.

We are 11 patrons away from adding a monthly Tavern Chat session on the Discord Server that should better align timewise with community members across the pond or even the other side of the world. This would be in addition to the weekly chats on Wednesday nights.

We do have a bit to go to get to where we can set up and run an online OSR gaming con, but we'll get there ;)

As an aside, i may put the extra money to buying a new desk chair - i've heard the jokes that my chair is my plus one on the podcast and the weekly chats and may need to address it sooner than later ;P

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 67 - There's a Succubus Holding a Monster Manual!

Ah, the beauty of late 70's / early 80's advertising. She could have been on a Ratt album cover back in the day ;)
You fiend! Yep, that IS a Succubus holding a Monster Manual. Who would have thought? With this episode, I look at demons & devils in the AD&D 1e Monster Manual and my personal experience with the Satanic Panic from back in the day ;)

Christmas in July - Entire Line of Fat Dragon Games Printable Terrain (Paper and 3d)

Dragonlock 3d Printed Mouth of Doom (Painted) at Gary Con X
Fat Dragon has probably the best printable terrain one can find. Heck, its Dragonlock line gives Dwarvenite a solid run for its money at a fraction of the cost (we're talking the 3d printed terrain here).

The paper terrain is no slouch either, with multilayered PDFs to give you just the effects you want. Since you print it yourself, you can have as much as you want.

All of the Fat Dragon files, 3d print, and paper, are 25% off for the RPGNow / DriveThruRPG Christmas in July Sale. As I type this there are about 10 days left in the sale.

If you make a purchase please mention it in the comments below. I'll rub Tom's bald head for luck for each of you that comments when I see him at Gamehole in November. Maybe we'll take a pic or two ;)

Just an FYI, but Fat Dragon Games / Tom Tullis has always been very supportive of The Tavern.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 66 - AD&D 1e PH put me to Sleep - No Save ;)

Sleep is one of the most powerful spells at low-level AD&D. At high levels, it is near worthless. I poke around the Sleep spell today. Hopefully, I don't awake any sleeping bears ;)
In today's episode, I look at the Sleep spell in AD&D and how it is handled in some of the retroclones.

Color Map Available for The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle (New Download Link)

Map by Ian Christy
This map is gorgeous! You really should grab it :)

Seriously, it's my desktop background now.

We have a new link to grab all things Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle. It is:

tenkars-tavern.games/TheBlackIsle

It's now linked to a folder, so it is much easier to add new things (like the above map) and update the PDF file.

Notice, its NOT a bit.ly link. Apparently, you can't edit your bit.ly links unless you are paying 99 bucks a year.

The above link is hosted by Rebrandly.com.  For 2 bucks for the first year (25 to renew I do believe), I now have the tenkars-tavern.games domain for my redirects. I'll be updating links for Swords & Wizardry Light and some other stuff moving forward using the tenkars-tavern.games domain.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 65 - The Tavern Wins a No-Prize & The Black Isle

A smallish rant and some background on how The Black Isle setting came to be.
I talk about why The Tavern (in any of its forms) will never win an award. More importantly, I talk about the free, crowdsourced sandbox setting, The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle.

The Gazetteer to Eilean Dubh: The Black Isle (A Free Crowd-sourced Fantasy Sandbox Setting)

I'm sitting here at my desk, simply amazed at what I am looking at. I had this silly little vision, this idea of crowd-sourcing a sandbox setting. What you see now is so beyond that vision I had. My touch on this is small, I got the ball rolling and then work threw me a curve ball that caught me off balance until retirement. A HUGE thank you to Milton Murphy for taking over the reins of the project. A better project manager you couldn't find. A shout out to Jed McClure, for putting the pieces together as you see here. Of course, thanks to all that contributed. I am forever in your debt.  Erik Tenkar

Christmas in July Sale - OSR Picks - The ENnie Nominations

Its that time of the year - Christmas in July! I'll be offering up what I think are some of the better OSR picks in the sale, but today I'm highlighting the ENnie nominations that are OSR or Old School by nature. Link to full Christmas in July Sale

The Dark of Hot Springs Island - "The Dark of Hot Springs Island is the game master's book. It is a fully illustrated 192 page book. Hot Springs Island is a hexcrawl, and the Dark contains all the details needed to run a sandbox game there. There are 75 locations on the island, and 26 maps ranging from ogre villages to a ruined elven city to the volcanic lair of a vain efreet. Seven factions, 87 interconnected non-player characters and 300 problematic treasures are sure to generate plenty of lingering repercussions each time your players make a decision. Finally, 448 random events and encounter motivations help ensure that every play-through of Hot Springs Island can explode into wildly different outcomes from the same basic parameters. The setting is system neutral, so there are no stats for monsters or prepackaged treasure parcels. No levels are assumed, and there is no path of advancement through this tropical wilderness."  4.99  3.74

Operation Unfathomable - I have this and oh so much want to run this - Tenkar "OPERATION UNFATHOMABLE is a 108-page, internally-consistent, gonzo funhouse module for Swords & Wizardry that runs like a subterranean wilderness trek instead of a “down the 10 foot hall and kick in a door” affair. There are random elements aplenty to keep GMs guessing as well as players. No balanced encounters to be found here, but the clever setup allows low level characters to drop into the dungeon “deep end” and still have a chance of making it out alive—if they’re smart and wary."  12.00  9.00

The Midderlands - OSR Bestiary and Setting - Not only do I have this, but I have the Midderlands Expanded - top notch - Tenkar - "The Midderlands is an old-school game setting with bestiary for use with old-school role-playing games. It is based on Swords & Wizardry Complete, but could easily be used with other old-school systems and even non-OSR systems such as D&D or Pathfinder. It is a green-hued, dark-fantasy, late-middle ages, early-renaissance view through grime-smeared spectacles. The setting itself is based on an area in the middle of England near where I live called The Midlands. Many of the locations are loosely based on reality, but others are pure fantasy from an addled mind. The setting part of the book contains something I call "game-juice". Not heavy of history and monotonous detail, but enough to get the game-juices flowing and let the game master twist and tweak as they need to in order to fit their campaign."   15.69  11.77

Fever Swamp - "The air is moist. The moisture mixes with your sweat — the heat is relentless. The drone of insects gives you headaches, and the fever from the infected wounds has left you delirious. Your raft is damaged, and there are spirits in the trees. You’ve only been here for three days. Fever Swamp is a hex-crawl sandbox adventure compatible with Lamentations of the Flame Princess and most other Dungeons & Dragons clones. Fever Swamp was written by Young Master Luke Gearing, previously famed for his contributions to the world's favourite outsider role-playing 'zine, The Undercroft, and illustrated by Andrew Walter, who surreptitiously inserted sigil magic into his work on our previous publication, Crypts of Indormancy, to uncertain ends. We encourage you to purchase and investigate it for yourself, for the greater good."  7.85  5.88

The rest of the OSR ENnies nominations that aren't on sale, and other ENnies nominations (which may or may not be on sale), can be found here.

The Tavern's Patreon has been Updated - Erik Tenkar is creating Old School Gaming News and Community Building

Yep, the overhaul of The Tavern's Patreon was long overdue, as The Tavern is not about content creation (though there is some of that). Instead, it's about gaming news and community. The community that has formed at The Tavern in its various forms it what keeps me doing "this" (whatever "this" is) every day and I enjoy every moment of it.

What follows is the support levels and goals (goals are no longer based on monies pledged but the number of backers, a much better fit for The Tavern):
Tip Your Bartender
$1.50 or more per month
A hearty tip for your bartender! I thank you! The community thanks you.
Backer Blog Roll
$3 or more per month
Backer Blog Roll - If you are a blogger and back at this level, I'll highlight your blog on a special Backer Blog Roll.
Discord Patreons
$4.50 or more per month
You'll have a special title and color on the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server telling the community your are a backer of Tenkar's Tavern. Additional benefit is a position on the Backer Blog Roll
Let's Talk
$10 or more per month
A private weekly voice chat with members of the Let's Talk level or higher. Day of week and time will be announced prior to the chat. We will use Discord. Length of Chat 30 minutes plus. Includes Discord rewards
Royalty
$20 or more per month
Your are Royalty. Suggest a topic(s) for the daily podcast and I'll try and get it done. Includes benefits of all prior level Includes Discrd rewards.
Patreon of the Podcast
$25 or more per month
Sponsor the Tavern Chat Podcast for a week. Get a mention at the beginning of the episode as a sponsor and get a link on the blog post sharing the episode. Additionally, all bonuses from prior levels apply. Includes Discord rewards.
As for goals:
When we hit 25 supporters a month, a minimum of 5% of the monies raised will be Kicked Forward to other RPG related gaming projects on Patreon. - Reached
When we hit 50 supporters a month, I'll add a monthly "off hours Tavern Chat" on the Discord Server to accommodate members of the community from across the pond.
When we hit 100 supporters a month, Feltothraxis, the infamous Dragon Puppet known for knocking a certain well known OSR product off of a porch would return in a series of videos if this goal is met. All hail Feltothraxis!
When we hit 150 supporters a month, I'll organize an informal online old school gaming convention via Discord and Roll20. Run by gamers for gamers. As long as this goal is met, I'll organize such a con once a year.
When we hit 250 supporters a month - If we hit this "unreachable goal", I'll organize an informal online old school gaming convention via Discord and Roll20 four times a year - once per season. Run by gamers for gamers. As long as this goal is met, I'll organize such a con once a season. Additionally, I'll run at least one session each time for backers of The Tavern.
Personally, I really want to see TenCon or Tavern Con, so 150 supporters is the level where I get dreamy eyed.

For the goals, its not dollars but supporters. Your buck-fifty carries as much weight as someone sponsoring the podcast.

The Tavern in all of its forms - the blog, the Facebook Community, the Discord Server and the daily Tavern Chat podcast, will always be free and The Tavern will remain a Neutral Ground.

There is no obligation. If you can support, great. If you can't, that's fine too. Above all, enjoy and participate and make it yours.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode #63 - #ConManKen - Ken Can't "Shut Up Shutting Up"

Ah, so Bugs Bunny isnt the only one that cant "shut up shutting up". This will not end well. It will, however, be entertaining as all hell.

State of the Tavern - Two Years Later - Am I Still Retired?

Two years ago today I officially went from payroll to pension. Not surprisingly, it allowed me to put a greater focus on The Tavern itself in all of its forms. Oh, and a small project called Swords & Wizardry Light ;)

The Tavern's Facebook Community has reached over 2,100 members in less than three years.

The Tavern's Discord Server has over 650 members and is very active.

The Tavern Chat Podcast has over 60 consecutive daily episodes available. Another episode tomorrow morning.

Then there is this very blog, on pace for another 800 post year.

Of course, being listed on the new Frog God Website as the Frog Convention Coordinator was icing on the cake.

Onward and upward! :)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 62 - Kicking it with Kickstarter - July 17, 2018

#ConManKen - Kenny Mobilizes his Army of Five - no, Six Followers...

So, #ConManKen is mobilizing his social media army of a half dozen peeps to take down Louis.

Ken has thrown down the gauntlet. I see a challenge for members of the Tavern's Community. Can we mobilize more than an army of six?

I'm looking for #ConManKen memes. Email me at tenkarsDOTtavern at that gmail thing. When I have enough I'll post them here for folks to share to the larger gaming comunity.

Feel free to "sign up" for the #ConManKen Bowel Movement by posting a comment below ;)

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 61 - #ConManKen - Marcus Can't Shut Up Either

My God, the rabbit hole just get's deeper and deeper. I know Marcus thinks he's helping Ken but he's just confirming things that weren't fully confirmed before.

The #ConManKen Saga just gets more and more entertaining. With today's episode, Ken's enabler Marcus reveals and confirms more than he planned in a series of emails with Louis.

Hi Marcus,
I saw that you left me a note on one of the boards (http://www.tenkarstavern.com/2018/04/ken-whitman-youve-been-served.html?m=1), so I am sending you this email to ask if you still hold the note on the comic book store, Little Monsters and Comics?

If you do hold the note, I would be interested in purchasing that note from you if we could come to terms to do so.

The first part of the conversation is that I would need to understand exactly what the note is for and what it is secured by. If you have any documentation that would be helpful also.

Take care,
Louis J. Desy Jr.

Oh, I remember this nozzle now.  He never called (more precisely I don't know if he ever called, but I never spoke to him), and I never saw his email, either.  My filter is turned up, I have had this email address for 19 years, and get a ton of junk.

This is the guy who was speculating that you were my financier for my store, and was accusing me of receiving money from your kickstarters to finance my store.  I told him to call me, because I didn't want to put anything else into text he could misquote, again.
Fuck that guy.  Guy thinks some shit up, and then posts it, what a douchebag.  By the way, Louis, Jon Huston was my partner.  The guy who owns Troll And Toad, post some stupid shit about him and see how fast you are homeless and penniless.

Ken, you saved my life, and though you piss me off badly sometimes, if this guy is telling you I ever entertained the notion of selling him your note, that is bullshit.

Don't let this guy get you all twisted up, enjoy your life, and enjoy working for your girlfriend.

Louis, if you want a statement from me about this, you can ask nicely and get a lot more cooperation than posting nasty shit online.  I don't know what kind of people you usually deal with, but I have heard you aren't even a lawyer anymore, so...  Unless You have some proof that I owe you money, you can quit posting about me on the internet as a way of virtue signaling to others how you are taking on big bad Ken.

Ken is broke, so kicking a guy when he is down doesn't make you anything but a bully.

On Jul 4, 2018, at 2:26 PM, Louis J Desy Jr  wrote:

What is the meaning of this?

I didn't email you earlier since I didn't see the message until recently since I had expected after a few days there would be no more postings to that thread and only accidently saw your message with contact information while looking for other information a few days ago. My contact information is all over the place plus the court filings list my full address and email address so you could have easily sent me a message plus Whitman is well aware of my email address if you had asked him.

I finally had time to send you a message; and you reply by insulting me?

As far as my speculations in public, many people can understand why you would want to help Whitman from your past friendship and help he gave you over the years, but are completely baffled as to why you would allow someone that has systematically stolen from everyone he has come into contact with over the last decade or two a safe place to operate from, continue his cons, and all the while run the risk that Whitman will steal everything that is not nailed down from you and the store and your business partner. So far it appears that Whitman has not stolen from you (or has but no details have come out yet but there was some mention in a posting about a problem with the arrangement) but the general consensus is that it is only a matter of time before Whitman does steal from you. If Whitman never steals from you, then I do wonder why you seem to be the one and only person that Whitman would not steal from since as far a I can tell, everyone that Whitman has come into contact from at least the mid 1990s and on has been sorry that they ever dealt with him.

These people that Whitman has ruined over the past years includes running his wife (now exwife?) into bankruptcy in 2013 with him and then charging thousands of dollars onto the charge card of a woman that he went on cruise with, probably with Kickstarter funds, from one of the Kickstarter projects.

Now there was all kinds of moving of assets once my lawsuit started, and it seems strange that your partner seems to be no where to be found or has any comment on any of this. Whitman appears to have been using the store that you sold to him to start running more cons, including selling fake Walking Dead memorabilia and now the store has allegedly been sold to Whitman's new girlfriend, Jess Hunter, but Whitman appears to be working there most days and even is at the top of the Facebook page for the store today. It is telling that the LLC that the store was claimed to have been sold to did not exist until after the sale was announced and one of the web sites tracking all of this made a posting about it.

That and more is why I wonder what is going on, since none of it makes any sense. To me it looks like there is not just one plan to shift assets around, but two plans of people moving assets to avoid a lawsuit and something else.

Fuck off.

And things like your reaction with your email are why people wonder what is going on!

So, tell me, is this whole story about the note on the comic book store true or is it just another Whitman 'fairy tale' that you went along with?

Right now I am still in a somewhat forgiving mood, and willing to play the part of monsignor and take confessions, and grant forgiveness for any ‘misrepresentations’ at this point; but the time for such confessions is rapidly nearing a close, so if there is something that you should or want to confess and be granted absolution for, the time is now.

What about your partner, maybe he would be interested in being bought out for his share of the business? I think he may be interested in selling, especially considering how you act when someone contacts you about buying what may turn out to be an almost worthless note on a business that people claim is losing money.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Flash Humble Bundle Giveaway - Humble Book Bundle: Chuck Tingle Humbles our Bundle

Zach G was the only entry in the prior Flash Giveaway, so it was an easy gift to giveaway ;)

Next up. Humble Book Bundle: Chuck Tingle Humbles our Bundle.

From Wikipedia:
Dr. Chuck Tingle is a pseudonymous author of gay niche erotica. He self-publishes his works through Amazon.com, primarily as ebooks, but also as paperbacks and audiobooks (narrated by Sam Rand). Tingle began his career by writing dinosaur erotica and expanded to stories based on unicorns, Bigfeet, and various anthropomorphized objects and even concepts. The bizarre nature of Tingle's writing has led to his developing a cult reputation.
