Kickstarter - Fog Dice Tower for Dice Collectors and Tabletop Gamers

The Fog Dice Tower for Dice Collectors and Tabletop Gamers Kickstarter looks good. Not like I need a dice tower that blows fog. But shit, its so damn cool a concept. I don't need it but I want it. And if I want it I want it painted.

Unpainted isn't bad at $49.

I'll see how the finances are as the month goes on. Needs over wants. But hell, this is a pretty want.

Oh, almost missed that if you subscribe to any of a various number of crates - Mythoard and Tenkar's Tavern crate jump to the front, you get a $25 credit to a crate sub. Interesting.

GameHole Con 2017 Photo Dump

Yes, I spent most of my time in the vendor's hall. Hey, its where all the cool kids were ;)

Sharing with minimal comments...

Convinced Rach I need a 3d printer for Christmas...

Still trying to convince Rach we NEED The Well for our new shower curtain, lace be damned!

Laughter is awesome!

Swords & Wizardry sold well

Swords & Wizardry Light Adventures from Pacesetter Games & Simulations - Print & PDF

Just a quick heads up. Pacesetter Games & Simulations has a series of four Swords & Wizardry Light adventures in their catalogue. I was given print copies of all four at GameHole but have yet to get the chance to read them - con catch up is still in full force - heh.

I was told that the SWL titles were selling very well for them. Exciting times.

The adventures are:

Q1 The Screaming Temple (S&W Light)

Q2 Eruptor's Vengeance (S&W Light)

Q3 Death on Signal Island (S&W Light)

Q4 The Final Chapter (S&W Light)

Three bucks each for the PDFs, eight bucks each for Print plus PDF

Swords & Wizardry Continual Light PDF has Been Updated at OneBookShelf

The Swords & Wizardry Continual Light PDF has been updated to correct typos, update some art, add missing text and other small changes. If you've already downloaded a copy, the new file should be up on RPGNow / DriveThruRPG right now. (edit - the file shows its updated but you can't DL the update - I've emailed tech services at OBS)

Yes, this does mean we are a step closer to going Print on Demand at RPGNow / DriveThruRPG.

Additionally, we will be pricing the SWCL PDF at its suggested price of $2.50 starting next week, so the PWYW pricing will be going away shortly. If you've been on the fence about snagging a copy of the PDF or its been sitting in your wishlist, now is the time to snag a copy.

Nearly three and a half weeks later, Swords & Wizardry Continual Light is sitting in the 2nd spot of the Hottest Small Press at RPGNow and that's because of readers like you. I can't thank you enough.

We have lots in store for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light and we are thrilled to have you along for the ride.

New PWYW Release - Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 (written by someone more talented than me ;)

Under Tenkar's Tavern is a new PWYW release from Thom Wilson / Throwi Games. Yes, it has my blessing ;)

Seriously, Thom reached out to me to ask if I was okay with him releasing Under Tenkar's Tavern to the masses (as opposed to just Patreon backers) or if he needed to change the title. I happen to like the adventures included in this package, so saying yes was extremely easy. Besides, Thom simply does good work.

Written for Swords & Wizardry it will easily work with SWL / SWCL.

Did I mention its Pay What You Want?

Reminder - Tavern Chat Tonight - 9 PM Eastern = Post GameHole Con Wrap-up, SWCL and More

Yep, its another Wednesday night. I missed last week's Tavern Chat with GameHole Con but I'll be there tonight.

In truth, I'll need a nap just to stay up as I'm still catching up from GameHole (what a fucking blast) but I'll be ready by 9 PM.

Use the following link if you haven't stopped in and joined The Tavern's Discord Server prior:

Wear Some Swords & Wizardry Continual Light - You Know you Want to

To quote my 6 year old niece "This art sells!"

+James Shields has put the cover art from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light up on RedBubble, so you can now get it on shirts, hoodies, wall clocks and yes, even gamer bags:

Damn but I NEED that bag for cons and such. Oh, and Pinky needs a shirt. heh!

Kickstarter Reminder - The Folio #16 & #17 Double 1E & 5E Adventure Set - 28 Hours Left

Just a quick reminder: The Folio #16 & #17 Double 1E & 5E Adventure Set has just over a day left to fund. Well, actually, its funded but there's still a day left to back.

Time to put some Asian spice into the OSR system of your choice ;)
I just wanted to give everyone a bit of background on this project and what it entails.  Folio #16 & #17 work as a stand alone double adventure that add Asian inspired flare to a standard fantasy setting.  Back in 'the day', I loved using the old TSR Oriental Adventures to add samurai, ninja, oni, martial artists and more to my D&D campaign.  It helped me flesh out the standard Monk class, and it also brought in other cool aspects that added flavor to my adventures.  With Folio #16 & #17, I'm going to try to provide DMs with what I learned and incorporated, while also continuing on with the overall story arc of the White Ship Campaign.  Yes, these modules do perfectly stand alone, but they are also part of a large puzzle that my Folio series tends to build on.
So, if you love the orient and want to let your players explore and fight within some of its incredible fantasy depth, then these are the adventures for you!
And as always, thanks again for having a look at our offerings here at Art of the Genre!

State of The Tavern - Post GameHole Catching Up and Stuffs

My God what an excellent convention. GameHole really is an integral part of the OSR Gaming Convention trifecta. Rach & I were never at a loss for things to do even if we didn't get an actual chance to game until Sunday night - heh.

Anyhow, I have a couple of GameHole pictures to share - mostly of the vender hall. Of course, that's where I spend the bulk of my time.

There are also some Swords & Wizardry Light releases I need to cover, including one from Thom Wilson that released while I was at the con - Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3

Oh, and can't forget Kickstarters. Need to update those too.

Later today for all that. And tomorrow. Right now, I need lunch ;)

Empyrea Project Funded and Waiting to Move Forward

Its been a busy weekend but I wanted to make sure I shared the above before heading to NYC later today (we don't arrive in NYC until nearly midnight)

Looks like the Empyrea Project is funded and ready to go.

I'm unsure who or what entity is empowered or authorized to conduct investigations in the gaming industry but I'm glad to see the project is ready to move forward without crowdfunding.

Tomorrow I  should be back with The Tavern's normal posting frequency ;)

GameHole Con - A Jolly Ole Time

It felt good getting my picture with +Jolly Blackburn today, something I had meant to do since Friday when he stopped by the Frog God Booth. Huzzah!

Business was good this weekend and it literally thrilled me to no end to hear stories from folks that had been introduced to Old School Gaming with the release of Swords & Wizardry Light at last year's Gamehole as they stopped by the booth at this year's Gamehole.

Alex Kammer runs a really organized and fun convention. Slowly but surely we are adding to the Erik & Rach convention schedule. Today mars out 6th wedding anniversary and we couldn't be spending it in a better place with nice people. It has truly been an awesome weekend.

Thanks to all that stopped by to say hello.

More posts to come about GameHole when I return home.

GameHole - Venger Joins the Swords & Wizardry Legion

Venger paid a visit to the Frog God Booth this afternoon. I think we've recruited V and his familty into the Swords & Wizardry Legion.

All Hail the Frog God

GameHole Con - Day One Recap - The Vendering

Yep, that's +Zach Glazar and +Michael Badolato manning the Frog God Booth.

Notice the hanging art behind them? Its for sale at the booth. As is the Bards Gate Map and the level of Rappan Athuk shown on the table.

It was a good day. Met a shit ton of great folks, some I've known prior and others I met for the first time. I really can't express how much your support means to me.

Feel good moment of the con. Meeting a woman in her 50s who had never played an RPG until given a copy of the Swords & Wizardry Light last GameHole Con. She was apparently challenged to give the 4 pages a quick read and return to the FGG booth with her impressions. She returned to the booth a short time later and said "I understand this and I want to play it" and she did.

Well, I met her today as she grabbed copies of Swords & Wizardry Complete and Swords & Wizardry Continual Light at the Frog God Booth.  Oh, and she had registered to play in a number of Swords & Wizardry game sessions at this weekend's GameHole Con.

This is why Swords & Wizardry Light IS. It works ;)

We'll have copies of Swords & Wizardry Light, S&W Tome of Horrors Light, Bunnies & Burrows Light, some Swords & Wizardry Legion packs and maybe even some Orcus themed dice - all for free at the Frog God Booth.

Yes, I did say Bunnies & Burrows Light. Play a rabbit - you know you want to :)

GameHole - Day 1 - Time to Man the Frog God Booth

Yesterday was table set up time. Muscles are aching and if you see me laid out on the floor behind the Frog God Table, its my right calf. Feel for me... heh

You will have many booth monkeys over the next three days but Bad Mike and I will probably be your man ones. If we aren't at the booth we're probably roaming the grounds looking for Swords & Wizardry games being run in order to offer goodies. We like goodies ;)

Signed and numbered (limited to 50 copies) Swords & Wizardry Continual Light will be available for sale at the Frog God booth. I'm sure Bill, Mike, Zach and other Frogs would be willing to add their signatures if they're at the booth. Copies are 20 bucks each. We'll also have a ton of Swords & Wizardry Light and Bunnies & Burrows Light to hand out for free :)

If you are a Pathfinder player, I do believe the vast majority of the Frog God Pathfinder releases will be deeply discounted.

See you at 10 AM :)

We Are at GameHole - Time to Sign and Number

Well, at least I don't plan on returning with any copies. 50 signed and number copies of Swords & Wizardry Continual Light will be on sale at the Frog God Games booth during the con. As you can see, I've signed and number half thus far.

Rach told me I can only buy as much stuff as the space the original 50 copies took in my luggage ;)

Heading to Gamehole Today - You Might be on Your Own Tonight with Tavern Chat

Rach and I are heading to Madison, Wisconsin today to attend the Gamehole convention.

Most likely, I will not be in Tavern Chat tonight. If I do make it, I suspect the visit will be short.

Carry on without me ;)

When? 9PM Eastern

New Release - The Witch for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light

If you follow +Timothy Brannan 's The Other Side blog you've seen Tim's affinity to witches. I'm extremely happy to see Tim add his witch's touch to Swords & Wizardry Continual Light with the The Witch for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light.

Heck, it just released at its already sitting at #3 on the Hottest Small Press releases at RPGNow. You can snag a copy of The Witch for Swords & Wizardry Complete for 1.49 in PDF.
The Witch.
This is a spellcaster that blends both divine and arcane practices. Whether she is the helpful local healing woman or the evil wicked hag of legends is up to the player.
Designed to be used with the Swords & Wizardry Continual Light game.
This class adds three new Witch Traditions, new spells, and new magic items to the Swords & Wizardry Continual Light game.
Yep, those are affiliate links above. Affiliate links keep the lights burning at the taps running here at The Tavern.

A Sneak peek at Some of the Art for the upcoming Wards & Necromancers sourcebook for SWCL

So, +Glen Hallstrom and myself are working on an undead sourcebook for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light. We are calling it Wards & Necromancers. You are probably looking at a baker's dozen of undead, some familiar and some far from it, two classes - a fully fleshed out Necromancer class and we will introduce a Death Knight class, new spells, new magic items and whatever else comes to mind. All should be compatible with other versions of Swords & Wizardry (except the classes will only cover 7 levels)

Well, Glen has been burning the midnight oil recently and the art he's submitted thus far is inspirational.

Upon my return from Gamehole early next week, I'll be putting the finishing touches on the September Patron PDFs, working on the Tavern Adventure and letting Glen's artwork inspire my undead muse. Because what good is a dead muse anyway? ;)

New Release - FrontierSpace Referee's Handbook

The FrontierSpace Referee's Handbook just released (its the companion book to the FrontierSpace Player's Handbook). If FrontierSpace brings you the warm fuzzy feelings of classic Star Frontiers, its meant to. Its not so much a clone as a homage, presented with the care of folks that truly do love and respect the source material.

So, what do you get in the FrontierSapce Referee's Handbook that you don't get in the Player's Handbook? Well, if the player's book gives you the nuts and bolts of the system, the ref's book shows you how to put it all together for campaign play.
A Referee is many things: host, writer, actor, and judge. While players play, you have to do everything else. It’s almost like work, and isn’t for everyone. But you’re different; you LIKE the job. It’s a big job to do, and your toolkit should stack up to the size of your job.
The Referee’s Handbook is the essential toolkit for the FrontierSpace roleplaying game. While it does contain rules for action, adventure, and combat – it is full of so much more. A wealth of game preparation tools accompany this rulebook.
Inspiration is contained herein. Add psionics to your games. Design security systems and corporate installations to infiltrate. Customize characters, weapons, robots, vehicles, and starships. Design your own species and creatures. Build a campaign setting of your own, or flesh out the one provided. Generate star systems and planets to explore. You just add imagination!
The Referee's Handbook is the essential toolkit for every FrontierSpace Referee. Contained in this book you'll find all the rules you need for running the game. This is a companion volume to the Player's Handbook, available here.
FrontierSpace is built upon the foundation of the d00lite system, the same game engine used to power BareBones Fantasy and Covert Ops roleplaying games. Years of feedback and continued game system development has evolved this product into something that flows at the game table while getting out of the way of a good story.
The FrontierSpace Referee's Handbook is 9.99 in PDF. The FrontierSpace Player's Handbook is also 9.99 in PDF, but 17.99 gets you the rules in softcover and PDF.

I've been impressed with the FSPH. I'll need to catch up on the FSRH after I return from GameHole next week.

Free RPG - Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG (Illustrated PDF Version) for free until November 1st (WFRP Clone)

For those of you that have thus far resisted the temptation to pick up a copy of the Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG (Illustrated PDF Version), now is your opportunity to grab it for free. Yep, through November 1st you can snag this houseruled clone of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1e.

Its a damn good book and the price of free can't be beat. Don't hesitate too long, because if you do you'll miss out.
ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a retro-clone spiritual successor to Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, an unrepentant OSR heartbreaker released under Creative Commons License Share-Alike. It is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game, one where adventurers will:
  • Live in a gritty, ‘realistic’ fantasy world
  • Make morally grey decisions & enact vicious reprisals
  • Uncover insidious plots & political intrigue
  • Desperately fight in clandestine & open field combat
  • Defend themselves from injuries, madness & mutations
  • Take part in heart-pumping chase scenes
  • Venture into the wilderness & survive its perils
  • Encounter sanity-blasting creatures & their minions
Using the classical D100 system, you will create grim characters, write perilous adventures and build low fantasy & dark fantasy campaigns. These rules are perfectly suitable to run Renaissance and medieval-styled adventures, too. You can also use this book to craft homebrew stories set in the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, George R.R. Martin, Glen Cook, Scott Lynch and other ‘grimdark’-inspired worlds.
This 692 page, all-in-one game includes most of what you need to play: a character creation guide, game mastery rules and a bestiary brimming with creatures both fair & foul. All that’s left to gather are a few friends, pencils and a handful of dice.
ZWEIHÄNDER awaits, and the fate of your grim & perilous tale hangs in the balance!

ZWEIHÄNDER print-on-demand now available! The book comes with a full color cover, with black & white interior. We used the Hardcover Color Book (Standard Heavyweight) option to make the B&W images richer. In addition, the heavier paper weight makes this book retail quality!

Weekend Wonders - Knife of the Warden of the Lower Realms (SWCL / OSR)

The Knife of the Warden of the Lower Realms was created for and issued to Meagenbrand, Ranger and Warden of the Lower Realms, an area away from the larger kingdoms and empires of the world. The knife if a + 1 Knife that allows its bearer a 3 in 6 chance of tracking in the outdoors. In the hands of a Ranger, its true power shines through. The knife's enchantment becomes + 3 and inflicts double damage on goblinoids. In addition, the rangers tracking only fails if 2 "6s" are rolled on 2d6.

Meagenbrand fell to a warband of orcs and his knife was never recovered.

Art copyright Rick Hershey / Fat Goblin Games. Used with permission.
