Weekend Wonders - Knife of the Warden of the Lower Realms (SWCL / OSR)

The Knife of the Warden of the Lower Realms was created for and issued to Meagenbrand, Ranger and Warden of the Lower Realms, an area away from the larger kingdoms and empires of the world. The knife if a + 1 Knife that allows its bearer a 3 in 6 chance of tracking in the outdoors. In the hands of a Ranger, its true power shines through. The knife's enchantment becomes + 3 and inflicts double damage on goblinoids. In addition, the rangers tracking only fails if 2 "6s" are rolled on 2d6.

Meagenbrand fell to a warband of orcs and his knife was never recovered.

Weekend Wonders - Kite Shield of the Damned Lords (SWCL/ OSR)

The Kite Shield of the Damned Lords is one of three surviving magic items associated with the Lords of The Crestfalls. Two brothers and a sister of the noble house of Avinier were sent on a quest to retrieve a piece of ancient knowledge. None of the three siblings returned, but their ghosts have been spotted roaming the streets of Town of Crestfallen, writhing in eternal pain.

The Kite Shield of the Damned Lords is a well worn shield, pitted and dented but still a solid piece of smithy work. Its enchantment comes into play when what would be a killing blow is struck. At such a time, the shield heals its wielder for 1d6+1 Hit Points. Otherwise it is treated as a + 1 magic shield. This effect may be invoked once per day.

Note: No natural healing from rest will be enjoyed by the wielder after its enchantment is invoked. Ex: Healed for 3 HP, for the next 3 days no natural healing will occur.

Weekend Wonders - Azak's Waterskin (Swords & Wizardry / OSR)

Azak's Waterskin looks like many other waterskins until one realizes the "yellow cord" is truly made of gold. Like a normal waterskin, it holds a quart of water, but once per day when the command word is spoken, coins pour forth instead of water. Roll on the table below to find out which coins pour forth:

Roll 1d6
1 -   3d6 copper pieces
2 -   5d6 copper pieces
3 - 10d6 copper pieces
4 -   2d6 silver pieces
5 -   5d6 silver pieces
6 -   1d6 gold pieces

Note - these coins come from somewhere and someone will not be happy to find their wealth is being pilfered. Maybe it comes from a dragon's hoard, a town's treasury or the drunk sitting next to you in a bar's coin purse. Nothing in life is truly free.

Weekend Wonders - The Goblin Axe of Araz (Swords & Wizardry Light / OSR)

The Goblin Axe of Araz is a weapon created by the most devious mind of goblin-kind, Araz of the Firenose goblin tribe.

Araz wanted to supply his tribe with a weapon that would instill fear in their Dwarven enemies. As such, he designed a most fearsome axe, its head bolted with seemingly random hooks and barbs. In truth, this is where the danger lies.

While the goblin axe is unbalanced (resulting in a -1 adjustment to all to-hit rolls) its barbs inflict an additional point of damage per hit. Even more dangerous, if the attacker rolls a natural 20 on his / her to hit roll, an additional 1d6 of damage is done due to the hooks and barbs rending flesh.

Any dwarf that views a Goblin Axe of Araz in the hands of an adversary is most likely to choose the wielder as a target, as all dwarves know the intent of a Goblin Axe of Araz.

Weekend Wonders - Necromancer's Dagger (Swords & Wizardry Light)

Necromancer's Dagger - This dagger is made of a black metal with a carved ivory skull serving as its pommel. In the hands of anyone other than a necromancer it is a simple + 1 dagger. In the hands of a necromancer, it has the following additional abilities: + 2 to all turning / control undead attempts; may attempt to permanently control one undead (only one may be permanently controlled at a time.) Undead must have no more hit dice than half the level of the necromancer in question. Note, the possessor of a Necromancer's Dagger no longer gains hit points from rest. These life energies are instead funneled to the dagger. The possessor can still be healed via magical means.

Note - Necromancer is an optional character class in Swords & Wizardry Continual Light. The beta rules are available at The Tavern's Discord Server, pinned in the swords-wizardry-light channel.

Weekend Wonders - Ring of the Forgotten Man (Swords & Wizardry Light / OSR)

Ring of the Forgotten Man - This ring is a favorite of pickpockets and other ne-er-do-wells. When worn, the ring allows one to change their facial appearance, once per round, for up to sixty minutes. Note, hair color and style, height, weight, clothing, etc do not change. The Ring of the Forgotten Man just changes facial appearance, but that can change racial features (human to half orc, half orc, orc, etc - any humanoid) as well as add / remove beards, scars, birthmarks, change eye color, shape of nose and the like. There is a 1% cumulative change per use that the last facial change of that usage will become the new normal facial appearance of the user. The ring ceases to function as a magic ring should this happen. There is no save against this effect.

Weekend Wonders - The Orc Captain's Ring (Swords & Wizardry Light / Complete)

The Orc Captain's Ring was created for the human captain of an orcish mercenary company. Although his name is lost to history, his ring remains. He (or she) who wears this ring gains the following boons, bonuses and curse:

  • + 1 Bonus to hit and damage rolls due to increased strength
  • See in the dark in shades of gray up to 60'
  • Able to march 18 hours a day before needing rest
  • Speak and understand Orcish
  • While wearing the ring, the wearer slowly starts morphing into the physical appearance of an orc. This starts after one week of continual wear and completes after four weeks of wear. A successful saving throw must be made to remove the ring before the four weeks are out. Failure means that the change to the physical appearance of an orc will be permanent. No save is required to remove the ring after the four weeks are up and the change is permanent. Note: Boons and bonuses only apply while the ring is worn.

I'm in the process of revamping The Tavern's Patreon, but that doesn't mean I can't start posting material applicable to the revamp. Weekend Wonders will be a more or less regular feature at The Tavern, dealing with magic items and magical spells for use in Swords & Wizardry Light and / or Swords & Wizardry Complete. Some posts will find their way into the Torchlight Magazine. Others may get collected and placed on sale at OBS. All Patreon Backers will get a quarterly PDF with the prior 3 months of material. Backers at $10 or more will get it in print.

Weekend Wonders - Haskent's Ring of Poison Survival (SWL / SWC)

Haskent's Ring of Poison Survival is considered a cursed item by some, a blessed item by others. Then there are those without an opinion, those that have put on the ring and died due to their actions.

Upon fitting the ring on one's finger, four saves vs poison must be made. Each failed save results in 1d6 poison damage (successful saves result in half damage) Should the wearer survive, they will receive a + 4 bonus to poison saves going forward (and no damage on successful saves) so long as they do not remove the ring from their finger. Should the ring be removed and worn again, the entire process must be repeated.
