Kickstarter - The Complete Virgin Mine AD&D/5E Mega-Dungeon!

I've been following Art of the Genre for years now. Scott's work is always high-end, and the artists he secures for the covers are second to none. His orange spin releases fit nicely with the orange spin AD&D 1e books.

The Complete Virgin Mine is Scott's latest Kickstarter and is a compilation of seven parts initially released as soft-cover adventures (Folios), brought under one hardcover, orange-spined book. Or snag the individual releases - but then you won't have the orange spine...

I really need to organize my 1e collection/Folio Hardcovers to get that full "orange shelf" look ;)

The Complete Virgin Mine is a 7 part mega-dungeon with another series of rooms in the higher levels that feature access to 'the shadow realm' in which even more monsters can be encountered!  It is a project that is four years in the making, and has taken on a 'life of its own', much like that original Roslof Keep campaign (see below). As this project compiles 6 Folio adventure modules (#26-#31) and 5 mini-adventures, and a bonus 'boss monster' encounter for the final endgame (is the book cover giving anything away?) I thought it was important to offer the first five modules in both physical and PDF format, AND also produce Folio #31, The Dungeon of Death, which can also funded ONLY in this Kickstarter (for all you looking to keep your Folio collection complete!).

Kickstarter - The Complete Dungeons at World's End (OSR & 5e)

1E & 5E gaming mechanic swords & sorcery dungeon series done in classic orange spine hardcover style.

When Art of the Genre publishes its "Orange Spine" releases, they look perfect on my bookshelf next to my later AD&D 1e releases. The orange may be a little off, but I think that is more likely due to 40-some-odd years of discoloring of the originals than anything to do with Scott's current releases ;)

Welcome to the newest 'orange spine' adventure book from Art of the Genre, The Complete Dungeons at World's End!  This book compiles two adventure sets, as well as includes new and never before released content that helps expand the sets.  The adventures revolve around explorations into the unknown, one into the wild magic highlands of a distant island and the other mounts and an expedition into the ruins of an empire in the arctic north.  All adventures inside the book are laid out with incredible maps and in both classic AD&D and new 5th Edition D&D mechanics.  This book, and the adventures within, have been years in the making, and I look forward to seeing this collection help DMs take both high and low-level characters through the challenges of settings on the edge of the known world.

What is within these pages? This book will contain two complete adventure campaigns with incredible maps, new monsters, deadly  NPCs, and all manner of dungeon-crawling wickedness.  The first adventure set is for higher level characters, levels 10+, and the second is for new characters, and both are rendered mechanically in both 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons and classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons formats.

Who’s it for? ALL gamers, both new gamers and old-school gamers as it is easily expandable or playable as is. Each trilogy introduces the characters to new 'micro-settings' adaptable to most sandbox worlds and gives the characters good opportunities to explore and dungeon delve. The base mechanic will be for AD&D with 5th Edition stat blocks in grey.

If you haven't been grabbing The Folio as it releases, this is a great way to catch up, as well as simply being a great-looking addition to your gaming collection.

The Complete Dungeons at World's End is 15 bucks in PDF and 45 bucks in print plus PDF. There are further options with the addition of prior releases you can back for. All of the "Orange Spine" books are 128 pages.

Kickstarter - Folio #29 The Ogre Arena Gaming Adventure! (for 1e & 5e)

I've been remiss on covering a number of Kickstarters that are currently funding that I find myself backing (or about to back). Expect to see Kickstarters covered here and on The Tavern's YouTube Channel over the next few days.

So, today I'm covering the latest release in the Folio Series. I've always enjoyed the various Folio releases, of which I have a nearly complete collection between print and PDF. The detachable covers on the print version just make my heart yearn for the gaming days of my youth in the 80s.

The current Kickstarter is Folio #29 The Ogre Arena Gaming Adventure! (for 1e & 5e). It's 5 bucks in PDF, 25 in Print plus PDF, and 15 bucks for the 4 parts currently released in PDF. If you want ALL of the Folio releases as of right now, which is 29 PDFs of the main run and 7 from the Folio's Black Label selection, it's 70 bucks in PDF. That is a Holy Shit level bargain!

Join the adventure as Art of the Genre  continues to add content to its first new mega-dungeon in over three  years!  This forth part of a six phase mega-campaign is based around  2nd-4th level characters  in a completely revolutionary setting.  I've specially designed the  dungeon to breathe new life into  those adventuring levels while allowing the DM the ability to create   incredible story arcs with old favorite monsters like lizardmen, giant serpents, huge toads, and even early fantasy RPG video game monsters inspired from classic crawls like Wizardry and Bard's Tale!

The Virgin Mine setting  revolves around an adventuring company moving into the wild jungles  ruins  around  the Imperial Capital city of Nextyaria. Here, they will  match wits against other treasure-seeking adventuring companies as well as the intelligent dungeon that hosts relic treasures with nearly unlimited  power.

Folio #29  will introduce characters to the next section of the massive Virgin Mine Dungeon,  the Ogre Arena!.   Unlike normal dungeons, this one carries  various mysteries and  wrinkles that 'bend' the rules of character  advancement, and strategy will need to be employed as  the party learns  the ropes within the Virgin Mine Dungeon setting.  Dungeon details include 2D standard hex maps as  well as fully 3D renderings of The Howling Dungeon section of The Virgin Mine.     A gazetteer section will give background on the new rules and the  exterior camps and companies. Several new monsters lurk within as well as new magical treasure.  It also features a fully removable and stand-alone cover in perfect OSR tradition that acts as a DM Screen!

Humble Bundle - Treasures and Tehuatl Book Bundle (5e)

Frog God Games and a number of fellow publishers have a new 5e bundle on Humble Bundle - Treasures and Tehuatl Book Bundle. I must say, the content included is awesome. Tuhuatl is an extremely well-executed homage to ancient Central American cultures. The Folio R01-06 is a nice campaign for any edition of the rules. The Airde setting from Troll Lord is one of my favorite RPG settings of all time. The Tome of Treasures will convert easily to the OSR. Plus all the other adventures and material.

In my opinion, 18 bucks is the sweet point for the Treasures & Tehuatl Bundle as it gets you everything but The Tome of Treasures in print. It's 43 plus shipping if you want ToT in print.

Kickstarter - FAST Core Rulebook - Multi-Genre RPG System (from the creator of The Folio)

I've known R Scott Taylor for a number of years. His Folio series has been consistently very good to amazing in quality and content, and he certainly knows old-school gaming. This is why I am in for the $80 "Kitchen Sink in Print" level for the FAST Core Rulebook Kickstarter. Sure, I don't need yet another RPG, but I do need a streamlined multi-genre RPG. I no longer can parse GURPS like I used to when I was younger ;)

FAST is a multi-genre tabletop RPG that streamlines game play for both gamemasters and players alike.  The purpose of FAST is to help over-burdened users create and play fun scenarios without hours or prep time.  The system revolves around a single die, the D10, and character creation and updating is made to reflect the ease of first generation RPGs in which multiple books, massive skill trees, and weighty feats and additions didn't quickly send character builds out of control.  At its core, FAST is about quick fun, without the headaches of overly 'crunchy' and rules heavy systems.

Kickstarter - The Folio: Retro Classics, Ice on the Water Trilogy (1e & 5e)

Ah, 2022, The Year of Transparency here at The Tavern. I'm enjoying it thus far, as there is nothing quite as rewarding as being open and truthful. I've always been happy to be transparent, but in 2022 I'm making an extra effort.

I consider Scott Taylor a friend. I could see us swapping stories over pints of beer at the bar or pub, not that we have :) I've also enjoyed the prior The Folio releases, as they are very reminiscent of the modules of old. I've yet to use any whole cloth, but they are enjoyable to read and inspirational in the material I can steal for my own campaigns. In truth, I need to run more games in 2022.

Scott has a new Kickstarter, The Folio: Retro Classics, Ice on the Water Trilogy, and it looks like another Folio release that I'll be stealing liberally from. All three adventures are 20 bucks in PDF, or 50 bucks in Print plus PDF. In all seriousness, if you haven't picked up past Folio releases, you should consider doing so. The production quality is second to none.

In 1985 I took my first shot at being a game designer, and today, 37 years later, I'm finally trying to bring the dream of that 14 year old kid to reality.  After spending the past twenty years working in the gaming industry, and the past decade with my own company here at Art of the Genre, I think its finally time to bring the Ice on the Water trilogy to life for the general public.  Considering the success of Roslof Keep, my first such 'reanimation' of an old adventure campaign, I absolutely can't wait to let gamers into the workings of my mind as a teen in the 1980s.  Sure, the meat of the adventures will be updated, expanded, and re-imagined, but the bones of are the same.  So prepare yourself for a wondrous ride in the far north of the Nameless Realms, where characters levels 10+ will have a chance to test their metal against magic and monsters never before released to the general public.  Are you ready for Ice on the Water?  R Scott Taylor

Kickstarter - Folio #28 The Howling Dungeon Gaming Adventure! (1e & 5e)

Part 3 of a new AD&D and 5E Mega-Dungeon Adventure Set!

I've been a follower of The Folio series of adventures since damn near the beginning. I find they are very useful to mine for ideas, and the production quality is second to none.

Did I mention they have detachable maps on the inside covers?

Folio #28 The Howling Dungeon Gaming Adventure is a low-level adventure (2-4). I happen to be a fan of low-level adventures, as I have a firm belief that high-level adventures need to be tailored to the party, whereas low-level adventures require less tweaking. YMMV.

Folio #28  will introduce characters to the next section of the massive Virgin Mine Dungeon, the Howling Dungeon!.

Inflation and Supply Chain Issues Are Here - Troll Lord Games Perspective Below

I was reading the comments of the latest Folio Kickstarter (I'll probably cover the Kickstarter itself in a day or so) and I was struck by the following comment and response:

It should be noted that The Folio is printed stateside, so the problem is literally on the supply side of things. Less supply, prices rise. I suspect PDFs will become more popular for gaming t the table.

Then I remembered Steve Chenault of Troll Lord Games had a long post last week about the supply issues and how Troll Lord Games is addressing such.

There is more, and it is LONG! It is also one of the best explanations as to why to source and produce goods locally. I tip my hat to Steve, and I'm sharing his words because they should be read by as many as possible.
The LONG
Last year, as the pandemic began to spring across borders and wreak havoc in lives, both personal and professional, I put out a PSA of sorts, discussing the current state of things at Troll Lord Games. I did this to let people know that the pandemic and the devastation it caused would not impact their orders and Kickstarter pledges (just search pandemic on my page and you can find it or go the TLG blog.)
In short, when the pandemic jumped the Chinese border into Korea, we began stocking up on manufacturing and shipping supplies, anticipating its eventual arrival here. And because TLG uses domestic sources for its manufacturing and domestic sources for shipping and other supplies, that any delays were largely of our own doing and would be manageable.
That was 18 months ago (or thereabouts, I have never really been able to track time in my head). Many things have stayed the same, but we have had to adjust some. So today, as we anticipate the release of the 8th Printing of the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook, and the year is winding down, it seems a good idea to bring everyone in and let them know how TLG has weathered this rather challenging year.
Contents: Below I talk about domestic manufacturing and our supply line, changes to our practice, the environment, and veteran programs.
Covid
I am not going to discuss Covid or its many variants, and all that that entails. This is not the place for that discussion. People must make their own choices and carry on. I will say that two of our staff contracted the virus. One suffered horribly for weeks, the other barely had a sniffle. So, it seems TLG is a microcosm of the world around it.
Manufacturing/Printing
As those of you who have been around TLG for awhile know, we print and manufacture almost everything we do in the United States, or at times Canada (we would in Mexico if the opportunity presented itself). I have been and remain a large supporter of domestic purchases. This goes for everyone, everywhere, in every country. Wherever you live, support the locals first. It is a good philosophy. Good for your neighbors. Good for the environment. Good for everything (personally we have even begun using local butcher shops to buy our meat).
Because of this, we have suffered no shortages of any product or material since the pandemic and the economic turmoil that it caused, began. I do not see any on the near horizon.
Our softcover books, most of them, we print in house in our own print facility. We buy locally sourced paper (though the supplier is in Memphis and Illinois).
Our hardcover books, and some softcover, we print in Marceline Missouri. They assure me that they purchase their supplies locally.
TLG does this, largely because I love my country (both sides of the political divide: left and right, I love you all and your hyperbole, you worthy bastards!) but there are also business concerns:
Quality Control: We have complete control over the quality of the manufacturing. No long delays trying to sort out an issue. We smyth sew all our hardcovers and it is done in Missouri where, if there is a problem, it can be fixed immediately. This is vital to maintaining high quality books that see a great deal of use.
Delays & Interruptions: This has always been a concern for me. I read a great deal of history and know how quickly things can change, and the pandemic was just another in a long line of events that highlighted that. Having our releases subject to the whims of other countries, tariff wars, seizures, war or even being held up for any number of reasons isn’t something I wish to entertain. This is particularly important where Kickstarters are concerned. Backers have already paid for product, it is enough that they have to wait on TLG, its too much to ask for them to wait on the whims of international trade.
Environmental: Over 95% of our sales are to the U.S. and Canada (we are looking at you next Mexico)! Material produced here, with local resources does not have to clog the trans-oceanic shipping lanes. It is also produced in facilities that are subject to the laws of the U.S., which do keep factories much cleaner than many other countries.
Local Economy: It is just good for the local economy. It is good for us, our neighbors, and our neighbor’s neighbors. It helps them pay their bills, and that is pretty cool.
Cost: Does it cost more to print domestically? Yes. It does. But we are okay with that.
Manufacturing domestically is our philosophy and will remain so, so long as I am at the helm.
Domestic Manufacturing in Real Terms
Manufacturing and printing in the United States and supporting companies that do so has very down to earth, hearth and home consequences. For those who don’t really give this stuff much thought, I want to explain this in real terms to visualize it better. Lord knows it took me several years at the helm of this company before I really grasped the nature of this beast.
Local
When you spend money at TLG, either through direct orders, buying at a retail shop, a crowd sourcing campaign, or wherever, a percentage of that purchase (ranging from 36% - 100%) goes into our coffers. Well, the coffer really, we only have the one and it is only just a jar that Tim keeps beneath the old cabin slab down by the river. That money does not sit there. It immediately goes to paying everyone who works here. There are five of us who work at TGL full time and about half a dozen artists, cartographers, and others. Revenue pays them first (and just for those out there who are mad at CEOs, I always get paid last), they take that money and pay whatever bills they pay. Your support goes right to their homes.
But your impact is much, much greater than supporting artists and writers and designers. Through TLG you have a direct impact on lives beyond our humble walls.
TLG uses local suppliers for equipment parts, shipping boxes, paper, glue, printing paper, toner, and printer maintenance. We are the largest client for one of these companies, and one of the largest for another. Both businesses suffered tremendously during the pandemic, largely because restaurants dropped off ordering menus, fliers, and posters. However, TLG’s business remained steady and strong. Book printing in our own shop was up, because of you, so we ordered more supplied, paper, etc. This helped these businesses weather this storm. You did this through TLG.
Your spending, goes through TLG and to their coffers. From there it keeps their lights on and employees working. Their employees continue to get paid to cover whatever expenses they have in their own lives.
Random Side Note: I can always tell when the economy is doing poorly, as sales reps from businesses all over the country, whom I have not talked to in years, call looking to see if I need anything.
Second Random Side Note: At the beginning of the pandemic, TLG used five local suppliers for our print shop and mail room and several in adjoining states. Two of those have not survived and have gone under and a third moved their operations from Little Rock to Memphis.
Neighboring States
This is the same for the large printer we use in Missouri and the smaller one in Pennsylvania. We’ve poured a small mountain of money into their coffers, that in turn goes toward their employees, buying supplies from other producers and their employees and so on, all the way down to the young clerk, selling food at the market.
This is capitalism. Ours is a minor market of which you are a vital part. There are no lobbyists supporting these businesses, nor government officials helping them, there is nothing but the commerce created and hard work. And the root of that commerce is you.
This is one of many reasons we print domestically. And one of the reasons, if you can, that you should try to support companies who manufacture stuff in your local community, state, and country. It is just better for everyone.
Sidenote: And this is important, all the sales reps at these businesses and the owners in several have reached out on numerous occasions to thank us for our business, something they had not done often before. That is telling. And of course, I tell them, they need to thank you guys. You are making all this possible.
Necessary Changes
There have been two major changes at TLG because of the unpleasantness. I will briefly outline them.
Supplies: The supply chain has been a wreck for over a year. Though we purchase everything domestically, there have been delays in delivery. The longest we waited was about six weeks for 2-inch boxes. After that brief foray into not having 2-inch boxes (it is why some of you got 3-inch boxes with just one book in it), I had Todd change the ordering pattern and double the order of everything. For instance: we went from ordering tape in bundles of 22 rolls (I think) to 36 rolls and now in bundles of 144 rolls. When we dip below 50 rolls of tape, we will order again. We do this with everything. It is why we have several thousands of shipping boxes. So, this has necessitated us spending more upfront and piling this crap all over creation (actually I’m pretty good at storing crap so it is all nicely stacked away in the print shop).
Printing Delays: Covid hammered our larger print partner, where we have our hardbacks printed and they have suffered so many absences that their print time went from 3-4 weeks to 5-7 weeks. I suspect that they have had the same issues with getting supplies. Even though it is local, there are all kinds of problems all up and down the chain.
In short, we purchase deeper to cover possible shortages on shipping supplies (which is actually a good thing, because when you order deeper you get a bigger discount) and we have had to adjust our release schedules by a few weeks.
The Three R’s Recycle, Reuse and Read more C&C
We take to heart Davis’ much used phrase “Don’t s*** where you eat” and do our level best to recycle and reuse. Here are things we do to make that happen:
• We take all shipping boxes that come to us to the print shop, and cut them into packing strips that we use to better secure the books you order. Those who have ordered will notice these little strips in their boxes, basically quadruple boxing books. By reusing these boxes, we save a little money in packing which we spend on…
• Packing peanuts. Our packing peanuts are made from corn starch, so are static free and completely biodegradable. They are easy to use and if a sudden wind picks up in the pasture and carries them all over God’s creation you don’t have to worry about your Pa hollering at you for polluting his pasture (just a random observation). You can also make a mush stew out of them, which Mark Sandy did one day, but the taste was abhorrent so we do not recommend it.
• We only use plastic bubble wrap if another shipper sent it to us. So on the wild chance you received that in a package it was reused.
• Shipping boxes are ordered locally, many made locally, cutting down on shipping fuel and cost etc.
• All scrap paper from the print shop, scrap from making boxes, etc, goes into a bin and sent to the recycling center here in Little Rock, where I assume it gets recycled (I’m not sure what to believe in after reading about the crash in ’47 though). Some of the excess paper we make into note pads for the office staff where we try to make notes about things we are going to forget to do.
We do what we can to leave our little corner of this marble a little cleaner than when we found it.
Veterans
As a veteran myself, the son of one and brother to two others, I try to keep myself abreast of the issues that that community of brothers and sisters deals with. There is little TLG can do. In the past we have offered free product, print and digital to any service members in active theatres, we continue to do that. If you know anyone serving in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in an active theatre, let us know, we’ll ship them books. We also offer all Veterans a 50% discount on any purchase made through our store (all six branches and Guard and Reserves). Just holler at us for the code. Also, if you or a loved one is part of a group that uses RPG material to help Veterans cope with the many issues they struggle with, please let us know, and we’ll send books free of charge.
These men and women gave their all. We have not forgotten that.
Wrapping Up
We have 2 outstanding Kickstarters, the Players Handbook, 8th printing which should be shipping to backers in the coming weeks and the NPC Almanac which we hope to have out in December. Beyond that we just launched one this week for the C&C Castle Keepers Screens (https://www.kickstarter.com/.../castles-and-crusades...). All of these, including the screens, are printing domestically and we should see no delays for all the aforementioned reasons. We have all the necessary shipping supplies, from labels to boxes to fulfill all of these without a problem.
It has been a wild and difficult year. Many of us have suffered losses we never wanted to face, nor even thought possible. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, we’ll continue to provide games for your table and fun for your family and in turn, please remember, you are fueling a whole microcosm of businesses and the people that labor there.
Sincerely. From us here at TLG, and all our suppliers and printers, Thank You.

As an aside, I got my new HeroQuest box delivered today.  I had no idea that FedEx delivered on Sundays.

Indiegogo - The Folio: Black Label #7

I've shared posts of The Folio in the past, and The Folio: Black Label is kinda like a reserve whiskey. It might not fit the tastes of all Folio fans, but it certainly adds something different to the mix.

With The Folio: Black Label #7, Art of the Genre introduces gamers to our newest sexy swords & sorcery duo, Imani the priestess of Bast, and Daiyu the wu-jen/ninja.  Together, these two will take our adult themed gaming to the latest uncharted area of The Nameless Realms, the Steppes of Arcania, in a brand new trilogy of adventures!

Join these two as they find even more trouble than one can imagine, and witness just what kinds of delights they utilize to defeat their amorous enemies.  The Folio: Black Label #7 should inspire any gamer who is looking to spice up their table sessions with some dark, and sometimes comical, adult role-playing situations inspired by the 'B' fantasy movies of the 1980's.

I kinda regard The Folio: Black Label series of releases as Venger without the sleeze yet with the sex appeal. The fact that Scott has been consistant with high quality art across the various Folio releases is simply extra awesome

The Folio: Black Label #7 is 10 bucks in PDF, 20 bucks (plus shipping) for the Print plus PDF.

Kickstarter - The Complete Folio Black Label Collection (1e&5e)

If you are a regular reader of The Tavern, you'll know that I am a huge fan of Scott Taylor's The Folio series of adventures. Strong stories, amazing art, and high production quality mean you should expect to get your money's worth. Did I mention that Scott is very skilled at fulfilling on time, a rarity amongst Kickstarter creators it often seems.

Folio Black Label has been a series for The Folio with darker themes. The Complete Folio Black Label Hardcover is an orange spined book containing the original six adventures in The Folio Black Series statted for AD&D 1e and D&D 5e rule systems.

The Complete Folio Black Label Collection is available in PDF for 10 bucks, or in print plus PDF for 40 bucks. A bargain in either case.

What is within these pages? This book will contain two complete adventure trilogy campaigns in both 2D ‘blue’ hex maps, as well as full 3D  artistic rendering, and is complete with 6 full size modules. You will find new monsters, deadly  NPCs, and all manner of dungeon crawling wickedness, all for lower level characters, and rendered mechanically in both 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons and classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons formats.

Who’s it for? ALL gamers, both new gamers and   old school gamers as it is easily expandable or playable as is,  although the design itself is a low to middle level campaign for experience  player characters levels 3 to 5. Each trilogy introduces the characters to a new 'micro-setting' adaptable to most sandbox worlds, and gives the characters good opportunities to explore and dungeon delve. The base mechanic will be for 1st Edition with 5th Edition stat blocks in grey.

The Folio: Black Label #6 (1e/5e Indiegogo)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Scott Taylor writes some good shit. The Black Label line of The Folio is a bit more risque than the regular Folio releases. Just look at the cover above.

Scott always hits his release dates, which is a rarity on crowdfunding projects. Turn around on Black Label #6 is November 2021, but I expect it will ship sooner than that.

The maps are simply second to none. Classic blue for the win :)

The secret of The Folio is presenting the adventure for 1e and 5e. It really makes the adventures accessible to all. Well, all that roll a D20 :)

What does the adventure Before the Necrotic Gate revolve around?
Well, this will be a standard swords & sorcery based adventure that deals with the a three level keep you see above, located in the deadly 'ash lands'.  Characters will be required by an outside contract to return the daughter of a noble that fell victim to the roving slavers, bound for The Burning City.  The question will be, can the characters get in and out before the entire land rises up against them?

The PDF for The Folio: Black Label #6 is 10 bucks. Print is 20 bucks.

Indiegogo -The Folio: Black Label #5 (1E & 5E)

I'm a fan of R Scott Taylor's The Folio series of adventures. Written for AD&D 1e and D&D 5e, you can see Scott's Old School Gaming roots in the writing and the presentation. I'm a huge fan of detachable covers in my gaming books, and The Folio does not disappoint.

The Folio: Black Label is Scott's "adult line" of adventures, but I see them more are "R" rated. While you probably wouldn't want your pre-teen reading such, as an adult I appreciate the option to do so.

The Folio: Black Label #5 is the latest in the Black Label series of releases, and has just over 24 hours in its funding period as I write this.

The Folio: Black Label series are fantasy adventure modules that are compatible with BOTH classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and 5th Edition D&D formats.  Each adventure combines what I enjoyed most from the heady days of of the late 1970s and the 1980s swords & sorcery storytelling.

The Folio: Black Label #5 continues an adventure path pitting the characters against a demonic slaving nation bound to a cursed ruin called The Burning City.  In this adventure the characters will continue to try to retrieve a stolen noble before she is taken too deep into the demon insect infested 'ash lands' that surround The Burning City for hundreds of miles.  They must brave a slaver camp and then enter the old Temple of the Moon, a long abandoned religious structure that now houses demon insects, fell shaman, and wasteland raiders.

Taking a page from the previous Black Label Trilogy, this one is going to have an even more adult edge than can found in the standard Folio, and yes, there might be some nudity, and maybe some horror, and maybe a twisted quality here or there, but at the base its really just about the unfettered fun of hacking and slashing your way through a pulp style adventure with blatant evil doers, magical treasures, and exposed flesh.

So, I'm throwing out the standard politically correct playbook, and turning the flux capacitor back to the early days of gaming.  I hope some of you will join me.

Yep, we use "adult language" on The Tavern's Youtube Channel. Go figure ;)

Kickstarter - Folio #27 - Lair of the Serpents (1E & 5E - Get the PDF for a buck!)

I've been following Scott Taylor and his Folio series of adventures since the first one he published. Amazing art, quality writing, and adventures that are ripe for using, by piece or whole cloth for your own campaign.

If you haven't checked out The Folio yet, Scott's latest Kickstarter is a great opportunity to do so, as you can get the PDF of Folio #27, Lair of the Serpents Gaming Adventure! for just a buck. Even better, you can grab all 30 of The Folio releases in PDF for 30 bucks. Many campaigns worth of gaming material for D&D 1e and 5e for less than the cost of the 5e Player's Handbook.

Want to watch Scott talk about The Folio and more? I had a FireSide Chat with Scott a few weeks back:

Join the adventure as Art of the Genre continues to add content to its first new mega-dungeon in over three years!  This second part of a six-phase mega-campaign is based around 1st-3rd level characters in a completely revolutionary setting.  I've specially designed the dungeon to breathe new life into those adventuring levels while allowing the DM the ability to create incredible story arcs with old favorite monsters like lizardmen, giant serpents, huge toads, and even early fantasy RPG video game monsters inspired by classic crawls like Wizardry and Bard's Tale!

The Virgin Mine setting revolves around an adventuring company moving into the ruins of the wild jungle around the Imperial Capital city of Nextyaria. Here, they will match wits against other treasure-seeking adventuring companies as well as the intelligent dungeon that hosts relic treasures with nearly unlimited power.

Folio #27 will introduce characters to the next section of the massive Virgin Mine Dungeon, the Lair of the Serpents!.  Unlike normal dungeons, this one carries various mysteries and wrinkles that 'bend' the rules of character advancement, and strategy will need to be employed as the party learns the ropes within the Virgin Mine Dungeon setting.  Dungeon details include 2D standard hex maps as well as fully 3D renderings of The Lair of the Serpents section of The Virgin Mine.  A gazetteer section will give background on the new rules and the exterior camps and companies.  Several new monsters lurk within as well as new magical treasure.  It also features a fully removable and stand-alone cover in perfect OSR tradition!

Indiegogo - The Folio: Black Label #4 - Lair of the Slaver Succubus (1e & 5e)

I've been a fan of the Folio series of adventures / accessories since The Folio #1 released a few years back. R Scott Taylor has put out quality releases from the very start, and his venture into the "Black Label" series of Indiegogo releases has allowed him to dabble in more adult-oriented content while still maintaining his high level of quality.

I'll be having Scott on as a guest on the Livestream tonight (2/15/21) at 8 PM Eastern. I hope you'll join us and ask some questions :)

So, what is The Folio: Black Label, and in particular, what is the Lair of the Succubus?

The Folio: Black Label series are fantasy adventure modules that are compatible with BOTH classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and 5th Edition D&D formats.  Each adventure combines what I enjoyed most from the heady days of of the late 1970s and the 1980s swords & sorcery storytelling.

The Folio: Black Label #4 begins a new chapter in the series, this time pitting the characters against a demonic slaving nation bound to a cursed ruin call The Burning City.  In this adventure the characters will have to try to retrieve a stolen noble before she is taken too deep into the demon insect infested 'ash lands' that surround The Burning City for hundreds of miles.  They must enter a slaver compound and underground lair to retrieve her, fighting terrible creatures along the way.

IndieGogo - The Folio: Black Label #3 (1e & 5e)

The Folio Black Label releases have been a nice option for fans for The Folio for more edgy releases. I've always been happy with the quality of the various Folio releases I've backed. The Folio: Black Label #3:White Witch and Black Stone is the latest release in the series.
