WotC Survey - Some Questions Apply to Us Grognards (Hint - Pick Greyhawk ;)

Surveys are only as accurate as those that take the time to complete them - or some such.

Anyhow, WotC has a D&D Survey posted which even asks what edition(s) of D&D you are / will be playing. Goes back to White Box, 1E, etc. If you play a clone just pick your closest edition.

It also asks which classic settings you'd like to see have new material. I of course voted Greyhawk, Dark Sun and Spelljammer ;)

Its a fairly short survey so what are you waiting for?

Bundle of Holding - Ars Magica 5

I remember when I first came across Ars Magica. While the system didn't excite me the setting was awesome. A faux Europe where magi held the true power. My players didn't really like the idea of exchanging roles between adventures so we didn't get more than two sessions in before it all fell apart, but its always held a special place for me.

Well, now you can get all you need to kick off an Ars Magica campaign for less than 15 bucks. If you want to go full on, its a hair less than 27 for the larger collection.

So many games, so little time...

State of The Tavern - Discord Meets Hero's Brew Equals Huge Distraction! Heh

Some quick updates:

- The Tavern's Discord server is a success. We've had over 60 Taverners sign in thus far and it only went live Wednesday night. There's even a widget on the right side of this very page to get you started. Join us and start your OSR pub crawl!

- The Discord server is such a success I was up past my bedtime chatting away with folks and it wasn't even a Tavern Chat night. Seriously considering dropping Chatwing and moving the chat to Discord.

- We, as in the Hero's Brew podcast, are seriously considering doing some round table discussions with members of the community via voice on Discord and adding them as episodes of the cast. One of us would host the discussion with 3 or 4 members of the community participating. More on that soon.

- The Hero's Brew podcast has lined up its first guests. You may already know them from another OSR podcast. I'm excited as a pig on poop :)

- As I type this, the first episode of the Hero's Brew podcast has 197 downloads. We're stoked!

Organized Discord at The Tavern - Adding Channels and Members, Oh My!

Last night I announced the creation of the Tenkar's Live Chat Discord Server. Over the last 12 hours we've added nearly 30 members.

We've added Voice Channels for pick up games, so if you normally use Google Hangouts or Skype for you game sessions you might want to try Discord. Sound quality is aces.

Open Bar is the main voice channel. I'll be hosting it on Wednesday nights from 10 PM Eastern until whenever. I'll also pop in and be available for chat random times and days. If you see my icon in the Open Bar, I'm probably available.

As for Text Channels, when you log in you'll land in General. We have a channel for SWL questions, one for Tavern updates and an Ask Your Tavernkeeper channel. Oh, and of course, Requests for those of you that have requests.

As always, this is your community. Let me know what can be done to improve it and most of all, have fun,

Experience some Discord at the Tenkar's Tavern Community Discord Channel

Now we've gone and done it! The Tenkar's Tavern Community now has its own Discord Channel.

What is Discord? Its a voice and text chat service that is free. Voice is high quality and its the same service we use to record the Hero's Brew Podcast.

Want an invite to The Tavern's Discord Community? The link is below.

https://discord.gg/fReGmuD

Chat with other members of The Tavern's Community. Heck, chat with me :)  I'll be in and out throughout the day.

We'll set some "official" times for some voice hangouts. Heck, some of these may even become podcastable ;)

Right now, its a work in progress, but an enjoyable work in progress...

Tavern Chat Tonight - 9 PM Eastern - Lets Talk "Hero's Brew"

Its Wednesday, which means tonight is a Tavern Chat night. There's lots to talk about, not the least of which is the new Hero's Brew podcast with my co-hosts James Spahn and Glen Hallstrom.

All you need do is use the ChatWing widget on the right side of this page.

I've been considering setting up a Discord Channel for The Tavern and doing a "voice hangout" in addition to the usual chat. We'll discuss tonight ;)

Dented & Dinged Sales at Troll Lord Games - C&C Player's Handbook 10 bucks and More

Get all three core Castles & Crusades books for $30 total. Now THAT is a steal. Dinged and dented just means the work has already been done for you ;)

There's more on sale, all dinged and dented, and the prices won't last long because once they are gone, they are gone.

Always a fun system to fall back on, if you have holes in your collection, now is the time to shop.

Why iTunes and Google Play Music labeled The Hero's Brew Podcast "Explicit Content"

Yep, the Hero's Brew is "explicit content." Note, this is AFTER Glen went through and scrubbed every "shit" and "f-bomb" from the recording - yeah, James and I dropped a few.

So, why the "explicit content" label. The following exchange is my guess:
Tenkar - As of today, somebody got silver.
Glen - Yeah, somebody got silver.
Tenkar - It wasn't me.
Glen - Are we talking suppositories here?
There you have it folks. WE are now officially "explicit." ;)

As of this morning, episode #1 has 135 downloads. Not bad for less than three days. No idea what numbers other podcasts do as I was never privy to the inner workings, but a pretty good start I think.

So, what are folks saying about The Hero's Brew podcast?
"I made my wife suffer through the new Hero's Brew podcast. She actually laughed a few times and didn't force me to replace it with her music!" - Ian
"I really enjoyed. It sounded like y'all have fun" - Buddy
"Great podcast! I really need to spend more time in the tavern." - Chuck
"I love your focus on gamers not sleazy publishers!" - Name withheld

Matt Finch Breaks Down the OGL (YouTube)

Thinking of publishing under the OGL? Well, none other than our very own +Matt Finch has a series of YouTube videos explaining the license for the common man. For example, someone like your bartender ;)

Matt doesn't provide legal advice but her does break down legal definitions and the wording of the OGL.

Two parts are up. Part 1 is the first one, Part 2 is the second one.

GoFundMe - Braille Printer for Visually Impaired Gamers

I don't know why this hasn't been thought up by the RPG community in the past. The GoFundMe is to buy a braille printer to be able to supply converted RPG material AT COST to visually impaired gamers.

In the video, they use The Black Hack as a sample book to convert, so the OSR is certainly part of this.

For those that don't know, Rach is legally blind. For her, large print (or digital with zoom) is the way to go but we are both very passionate about getting books into the hands of the visual impaired and I think this project is awesome

Their goal is $1,800 to purchase the printer and they are about half way there.

It's a good project to back IMHO with goals we all should be supporting.
Thanks you so much for taking a look at our fundraiser. The DOTS Tabletop Roleplaying Gaming Project is devoted to raising awareness in the gaming community for the need for accessible gaming books and gaming aids for the visually impaired community.
I am attempting to raise $1,800 ($1,500 for the printer $300 to cover funding fees, sales taxes, and shipping) to fund the purchase a braille embossing printer to be able to produce braille materials for visually impaired gamers. Additionally, the printer comes with a full suite of braille translation and tactile graphic design software.
Currently the printer is on sale with a $2,000 discount, and if we can purchase the printer in the next couple of weeks, the company will add in a second year warranty for free! So I have to raise the money quickly.
The cost for outsourcing braille books is astronomical. For example, I just finished translating a roleplaying game into braille and tried outsourcing the printing of a few copies for my visually impaired friends to edit. The companies wanted over $200 for four copies of an 80 page book. With the printer I'm hoping to purchase, it would only cost $1.50 per book.
Here's something esle exciting! This printer will print tactile graphics...imagine how exciting it would be for a visually impaire game master to be able to feel a dungeon map!

Kickstarter - 28mm High Detail Pre-Painted Plastic Miniatures (what it says on the tin)

So, why am I highlighting the 28mm High Detail Pre-Painted Plastic Miniatures Kickstarter? A few reason and they all come down as lessons for others.

Pre-painted minis is a damn good idea. I love minis and have neither the skill nor the time to paint them. Then why is this campaign so unexciting to me?

First, the Kickstarter title should be something like "Role 4 Initiative Presents Pre-Painted Plastic Minis for RPGs" or such. As it is, the title is so generic as to be forgettable.

Then there are the pics of the samples. Could they have found worse lighting? Seriously, when you are trying to sell a physical product, presentation is everything and this is simply a failure to execute.

For five bucks a painted mini I don't expect much, but I do expect pics that show some sort of details, even if the details are a lack of details. The project is called "28mm High Detail Pre-Painted Plastic Miniatures".

The following has slightly better lighting and shows some detail (and promise)

Still, the colors are muddied from the lack of lighting.

Then there are the stretch goals that have the potential to drive this project into the red - if it had any hope of funding -

Physical stretch goals change the cost to complete the project. While fun to add, they are dangerous.

Oh, and don't sit in shorts in your video. Sometimes less is more. No video would have been more.

There you have it. Good idea poorly presented.

Hero's Brew Podcast - Now Available at Google Play Music! (I think that covers all)

It appears that the Hero's Brew podcast is now available at Google Play Music. Its already up on iTunes.

The feed is:

Alright, everything going forward should be smooth as silk, right? ;)

Oh, and thanks to all that have already given the first episode a listen!

Hero's Brew Podcast - Now Available at iTunes! (Google Play is pending)

Yep, iTunes just approved the Hero's Brew podcast. Please, download it and give it a rating. It's also been submitted to the Google Play store. We are waiting on approval at Google :)

Thank you all in advance!

Oh, find it on iTunes by searching for Hero's Brew.

Have You Ever used a Solar Eclipse as a Plot Device in an Adventure / Campaign?

So, with today's eclipse over parts of the Continental U.S. today, it got me thinking - "who among us has used a solar eclipse as a plot device in an adventure / campaign?"

ry as hard as I might to remember, I don't ever recall using a solar - or even a lunar - eclipse as a plot device in gaming. That's a damn shame as there are so many superstitions associated with an eclipse.

Shit, simply think how much of the population might go blind by staring at an eclipsed sun and you could have numbing fear for the next time. That isnt even counting the "world is coming to an end" drama it often brought.

Have you used an eclipse as a plot device? Tell us if you have :)

Hero's Brew Podcast - Episode #1 - The Trio Unleashed - IS LIVE!

We did it!

The Hero's Brew Podcast is here!

First episode is live and embedded right above. You can also play it on your IOS or Android device using the Podbean app and in a day or so it should be fully into the wilds of iTunes and other services.

We'll also be putting together a page here at The Tavern that will link to all of the epidodes as they release.

Should there be show notes? Definitely. Are there? Not yet.

What do we talk about? Listen and find out. You never know. Maybe we talked about you ;)

I'm just a screenshot to allow visual imaging on social media ;)

Swords & Wizardry Light lands at RPGNow - Let's Make it a Best Seller!

Frog God Games has uploaded the Swords & Wizardry Light files for "sale" at RPGNow / DriveThruRPG.

I'd like to see Swords & Wizardry Light trend as a best seller :)

Note, the SWL products available for download are priced at PWYW. This is a necessity for sales ranking purposes. DO NOT pay for them! If you feel you must, drop a penny or a nickel in the tip jar.

If you already have PDF copies of the SWL rules, Tome of Horrors Light Volume 1 and the SWL Character cards, I ask that you download again for FREE. The aim is to get more exposure to the rules and the offerings, and the best way to do that is to see them trending as best sellers.

Lets get this done!

Victorious Bundle - Over 60 bucks Worth of Steampunk Adventure in the Age of SuperMankind for 20 Bucks (Troll Lord Games)

This weekend Mike Stewart's "2017 Three Castles Award Winning" RPG Victorious has a bundle on sale at RPGNow / DriveThruRPG. You get over 60 bucks worth of Victorious releases (including the core game) for 20 bucks. You really can't go wrong.

I played in a session of Mike's Victorious at NTRPG 2015 and it was a blast! The rules are built off of Castles & Crusades and should feel familiar to any that play OSR games.

For 20 bucks you get enough material to play a Victorious Campaign for years :)
Hey all--it's Gen Con this weekend! We're not there, and if you're not either (or even if you are, we aren't bitter) then here's a little sale on Victorious product to hopefully help you feel a little better about it.
Save over 60% on The Victorious Bundle! The core rulebook, introductory adventure A Night For Jackals and four supplements--Rule Britannia, Manifest Destiny, Phantasmagoria, and the Hunter & Hunter Catalogue.
Now through Sunday you can get this bundle, normally over $60 -- yours for $19.99!

Another Gygax Memorial Fund Update - Alex Gygax Joins the Board of Directors of the GMF

I'm putting this squarely in the "Holy Shit I did not see this coming!" category. I always saw the Gygax Memorial Fund as Gail's personal albatross. Although her sister and brother in law are also board members, Gail has frequently - well, more than once, pointed out that she is the one doing it all.

Now that Alex Gygax is on the board I expect to see some movement on the project. I know the lad hates my very being (and I truly do understand why) but I sincerely wish him only success in his new position. He is what the GMF needs - young blood that want's to do right by his father's legacy.

I suspect we'll be seeing more updates soon.

Huzzah!

Next #ConManKen will announce the release of the KotDT LAS ;)

Update - Gygax Memorial Find - A Plaque, T-Shirts and Pencils!?!

Its Gen Con time, so news and updates as it trickles in.

Gail Gygax presented Gen Con with a plaque celebrating its 50th show. I know, pics or it never happened ;)

(note - screenshots are from Gail's FB page. I'm blocked so these shots were sent by another. As always, a HUGE thank you to The Tavern's Community for all the help)

See that comment about shirts and pencils? Hold on to your hats, boys and girls, because this shit is going to get real!

Here's the link to the GMF shirts with pencils.

I must admit, Gail has done something that #ConManKen has been unable to do - produce and sell custom pencils.

Now that the Fund appears to have an income stream again, perhaps things will be moving forward.

The shirt looks nice. I should do a GoFundMe to buy one and take a pic in it ;)

The Tavern's Facebook Community has Topped 1,700 Members

1,706 to be exact. Hitting 2k by the end of November is certainly within reach. That would mean 2k in 2 years.

The Tenkar's Tavern Facebook Community is vibrant, fun and best of all - friendly. Some of the nicest people in gaming are there to answer questions, give advice, share thoughts and leave real world drama at the door. We are about games. Old school games. And newer school games that feel like old school games. Oh, and good conversation.

It has in many ways become the neighborhood tavern of the OSR. Note, The Tavern is a BYOB establishment ;)

I've been asked what would happen if we actually do hit 2k members within 2 years. I literally have no idea. Well, not true, I have many ideas, just not sure which are practical ;)

Join us. We don't bite. Well, mostly don't.

Starfinder - Sold Out at Gen Con - In Stock at Amazon

Photo found on the Paizo Facebook page

Apparently Starfinder has sold out at Gen Con on the first day. Not totally a surprise, as Gen Con is very much about the feeding frenzy of the goldfish.

Anyhow, if you are looking to snag a copy and either missed it at Gen Con OR like me, aren't at Gen Con, your FLGS should have it as well as Amazon.

If you buy from your local FLGS, check the spine and binding - there have been reports of something amiss in a few cases:

http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2uisq?Starfinder-book-spine-already-falling-apart

http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2uiv6?Starfinder-Core-Rulebook-binding

Might just be outliers but best to check.

If you buy from Amazon you can always return with minimal hassle.

Starfinder on Amazon - $47.51 ($59.99)

Of course, I'll be playing White Star ;)

Yep, there's affiliate links above. Your purchases help support The Tavern. Did I mention White Star is PWYW - even in print (there are at cost prices for print)

Matt Finch is Doing a Series of Youtube Videos About old School Gaming

If you haven't met and spoken with +Matt Finch face to face, his new YouTube series is a decent substitute.

As I post this, Matt has three videos uploaded with more to come.

Do yourself a favor - watch the videos. They are short, informative and its Matt. I could listen to Matt all day ;)

Link to Matt's Youtube Channel

OSR Deep Tracks - A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore (Greyhawk Grognard)

I've been meaning to do this for a while - start an irregular series of posts about influential yet often overlooked releases in the OSR. This is THAT first post for OSR Deep Tracks.

Joe Bloch, often known as the Greyhawk Grognard (and man behind the Greyhawk Grognard blog) is probably best known for his OSR megadungeon release: Castle of the Mad Archmage. In many ways, CotMA is Joe's imagining of what Gary Gygax's megadungeon would have looked like, assuming he hadn't been forced out of TSR back in the day. Its very much an Old School dungeon and I ran it for over a year with one of my groups to great success.

Therein lie's Joe's strength, the "What if Gary had...?" I was never a huge Marvel comics fan as a kid but I picked up every issue of What If? I could get my hands on. I enjoyed the alternate takes. They made me think.

Joe's other major project is Adventures Dark & Deep, very much a "What if Gary had gotten to do AD&D 2e as he had planned?" So, Joe dug deep with the hints Gary had published and later spoke about and he designed and published AD&D - The What If Edition ;) If I weren't neck deep in Swords & Wizardry Light its probably the OSR edition I'd pull out for my next campaign - it really does hit the notes that Gary hinted at back in Dragon Magazine.

Often overlooked is A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore. The precursor to Adventures Dark & Deep, I often see it as an unofficial Unearthed Arcana II. These are the classes Gary hinted at. This is the book that led to Adventures Dark & Deep.

New and revised classes - the bard, jester, mystic, savant, and mountebank. I remember reading about plans for these in Dragon, but alas, it never would be until A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore.

The book is modular too, so you can take parts that you want - classes, and maybe only one or two, and leave the spells. Pick and choose among the monsters. Want to use the alternative combat presented? Do so. If not, don't. Looking for seaborne adventuring rules? Got you covered. Whatever you need to do. Its a supplement, not a system, and its easy enough to use with the OSR system of your choice with minor conversions (and often not even that).

There you have it. Tenkar's Tavern's first OSR Deep Track Pick - A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore. An OSR What If...

Remember, purchases made via The Tavern's affiliate links keep your bartender drinking beer. No beer and he get's ornery. Seriously, your support is appreciated. As is the beer...

Monstrosities, the S&W Monster Book - Back in Stock in Print - Just 20 Copies

Run, don't walk to the Frog God Games Online Store if you want your chance to own a physical copy of the Monstrosities book for Swords & Wizardry. 50 bucks gets you a copy in Print and PDF, but only while stock remains.

The Frogs found a box of 20 copies in their warehouse and when they are gone, they are gone.

Personally, I prefer it over Tome of Horrors Complete as it has both familiar and new creatures as well as adventure hooks. Oh, and the price isn't bad either ;)
You can never have too many monsters, and this book is filled with them! No matter what kind of campaign, there are foes galore to stock its wildernesses and dungeons, even the unknown depths of its mysterious oceans. This is a compendium that contains the monsters from the rulebook and many monsters from the First Edition of the original roleplaying game, but there are hundreds and hundreds of completely new beasts. Note: this is a second printing of the original Swords & Wizardry monster book, updated with errata and hundreds of illustrations.
The largest compilation ever of monsters for Swords & Wizardry/0e. If you play the very first edition (0e) of the game, or if you play Swords & Wizardry at the gaming table, this book is a must-have! 186 brand new monsters await, along with hundreds of the older monsters so that they're all in one book.!
Monstrosities was created with the generous help of the Swords & Wizardry internet community, as you can see from the list of unusually brilliant authors whose erudition and eloquence grace these pages. The book’s successes are due to them, whilst any errors or failures in the transcription of their noble work are doubtless my own.

State of The Tavern - InDesign - Livestream - Content - Oh My

So, I recently gave up on trying to learn from the official InDesign "textbook". Shit was all Greek to me.

I never decided on a birthday gift from Rach last month, and remembering that +Zach Glazar had suggested Lynda.com for my InDesign lessons (not inexpensive), I decided on a one year sub with associated project files.

I watched the first 25 minutes of the lessons and I'm beginning to grok it. I really am a audio / visual learner it seems.

First up will be the PDF for the Swords & Wizardry Light Elementalist class. I'd like to submit that to OBS this weekend.

Next will be taking the corrected and updated Swords & Wizardry Continual Light file and laying that out with the assistance of Zach. He mentioned we should do livestreams / recordings of our joint sessions. While it may be entertaining to see me flounder the idea is a learning experience for others looking to start working on laying out their own projects.

Clan & Hammer fits right in there too. Heck, by then, layout should be an easier process ;)

Amazing how focus starts to fall into place when real life health scares for the family fade into the background.

Reminder - Tavern Chat Tonight - 9 PM - and We Won't Talk About WEG Star Wars - Really ;)

Tonight is a Wednesday Night, and that means the weekly Tavern Chat has come around.

9 PM Eastern, using the ChatWing widget on the right side of this page.

Heck, there might even be things to talk about (there always are) but I am loath to mention them here, as we never stick to the proposed topics ;)

Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition (West End Games Version)

In the "Holy Shit!" category of posts, Fantasy Flight Games has announce it will be releasing Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition set - it includes the core book and the source book in a slipcase.
Fantasy Flight Games is proud to return Star Wars: The Roleplaying to print as a collectible set of two high-quality, hardbound books presented in a stylized slipcase. You'll find all the original game materials—just as playable as ever—and they're presented with the same graphic design and fake, in-universe Star Wars advertisements for the Imperial Navy, the R2 astromech Droid, and more.
Even the books' use of black-and-white, blue ink, and full color sections have been recreated, along with its use of still photos and concept art, some of which have been updated for this new 30th Anniversary Edition. Finally, the books come with a foreword by Pablo Hidalgo, one of the creative executives on the Lucasfilm Story Group.

Yes, let me repeat. Holy Shit!

It will be $59.95 when available.

Kickstarter - RPG WorldBuilder (Android App from Simian Circle Games)

Looking for an app for your Android device to create maps (world and dungeon), supports random tables, has a dice roller and includes digital versions of the World and Dungeon Architect cards?

Well, here it is - RPG WorldBuilder - and you can buy in for as little as 5 bucks (plus 99 cents in the Google app store).

Simply out, the World and Dungeon Architect cards are awesome. I own them in print and not only are they truly useful but I simply love the art. As many of you know, I'm a HUGE fan of Far Away Land and if you like the art you find there you'll like the art you find here.

Higher support levels give you drawn maps for your personal use (and even commercial if you back high enough)

Would I love to see this make its way to OSX down the line? Hell yeah. In the meantime I suspect I'll be losing lots of sleep in the near future as I'll be playing with this in bed. wait, not sure of that sounds right.

Seriously, for 6 bucks total this is a no brainer if you own an Android device just for the digital decks alone.

The Tome of Horrors Light Volume I Releases to the Wild (Swords & Wizardry Light)

Frog God Games has just released The Tome of Horrors Light Volume I for Swords & Wizardry Light. Its 3 pages (plus the OGL) of further SWL creatures for your gaming enjoyment.

If you want "first in line" access to similar works for Swords & Wizardry Light, you really should join the Swords & Wizardry Legion ;)

Enjoy!

Kickstarter - Dungeons of Doom III - Dragon Slayers - Star Hat Miniatures

Simply put, Star Hat Miniatures offers some great minis, and I'm not just saying that because they did an official "Tenkar" mini with their last Kickstarter. They are, quite simply, awesome minis.

You get the above Delvers Lost in the Dungeon of Doom for about $59 USD plus shipping. The detail is awesome. I really can't say enough praise about them.

And if you want LAST Kickstarter's assortment, it about 80 bucks USD (original prices are in NZ dollars) - last assortment included Tenkar, just so you know ;)

Its about $259 USD to get this collection to your door painted. My God, what a temptation.

Gamer in Need - Zach Best Family Benefit Bundle - 10 Bucks for a Bundle worth over 100 Bucks

One of the roles that The Tavern fills for the OSR Community (and the RPG Community at large) is to raise the bandwidth when there is a gamer or gamer's family in need. I spent 20 years in law enforcement, and law enforcement is a very tight community. Gamers are just as tight if not tighter and extremely generous at times like these.

The Zach Best Family Benefit Bundle is offered in support of Zach Best and his family. Zach is an RPG writer whose credits include BOLD, CRGE, UNO and TOSS. He is currently in hospice suffering from esophageal cancer. All proceeds from this book go directly to Zach to help deal with care and any other expenses.

Your 10 bucks will help a man and his family in serious need.

The Tavern thanks you.

In the Next Tenkar's Tavern Crate - There will be Castles & Crusades

When I returned to gaming after about 10 years away, the first thing I stumbled across was Castles & Crusades. Back then, it was the first print of the C&C Player's Handbook. Monsters & Treasure wasn't even on the radar - if you wanted monsters, you broke out your AD&D Monster Manual and your DMG for magical treasures.

Well, guess what? The next Tenkar's Tavern Crate will have the latest printing of the Castles & Crusades Player's Handbook. If that isn't a sweet prize, I'm not sure what is.

But wait! You might need some treasures to go along with that book.

Nord Games is supplying it's 5e Treasure Deck for levels 5 to 8. Yeah, I know it says 5e, but I have these cards and they work just as well for the OSR system of your choice, like, say C&C or S&W ;)

There might be dice from a Gen Con back in the last century and I heard there might be something from Dyson. Rumors, perhaps, but strong ones. Oh, and other loot, but sometimes surprises are nice.

Sign up is on the right side of this page. Every subscription helps to support The Tavern doing what it does best. What's that, you ask? A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and a whole bunch of OSR.

Hmmm, maybe for December we'll need to do a White Box Christmas...

Bill Webb (Frog God Games) on the Economics of Publishing High Quality Hard Cover Books for Three RPG Systems

There was a tempest in a teacup over at the Frog God's latest Kickstarter, Quests of Doom 4. The adventures are being offered only in softcover and a vocal minority of backers were demanding a hardcover option.

The reality of hard cover publishing that isnt Print on Demand is that you can't just print a handful of copies. You need significant numbers to bring the cost per book down, and when publishing for three systems the math become even harder.

Leave it to +Bill Webb to explain the economics behind the latest decision:
Hey all--Bill here.
I understand the thoughts behind the hardcovers--but just so you know; we hire top writers (Ed fricking Greenwood!), hire top artists (Terry Pavlett, among many), and hire top cartographers (Alyssa Fadden and Robert Altbauer).
I also got a ton of feedback that fans needed a lower price point buy in (those pain in the butt surveys we ask you to do on backerkit actually do drive how we deliver products). I also got feedback from a majority of our fans that people wanted shorter "portable" books so that at the table they could play with a module rather than carry a 300 page book around.
And finally, the main reason is simple economics--we cannot afford to do short adventure compilations in three systems. Publishing short adventures costs a bunch more than big sourcebooks. We have been seriously working in the adventure market for some time, and we just don't sell enough of them to maintain that $3-5 pricepoint for each of them that we did in the first few QOD books. Not if we want to pay writers a fair wage.
We would need to sell at least 300 sets of each version to make it worth printing the hardcovers (that is because minimum print runs on library bound hardcovers is 500). So really, what this means is we can either a) sell only pdfs or PODs, b) only make 5e modules (we sell a lot more 5e than the other two systems) or c) do what we are doing now.
We have actually lost money doing the QOD books for SW and Pathfinder, and as you can tell from the add-on sales, we have a lot of extra inventory left over (and the compilations are GREAT books, cheap--so everyone should get them--I especially love QOD 1's ant adventure!).
So why do we still do adventures? Well, I personally like them. I think they offer the best bang for the buck of any book besides a rulebook. I built Necro and FGG both on adventures, and we will continue to make them as long as folks buy them. I also want to make SW books (I play SW, and so do many of my friends) and Pathfinder books (our long time Pathfinder fans deserve books as well). Simply put, we need to be able to order how many we need and not 500 of them.
Now, on core books (like Bards Gate, the Blight, etc.)--we sell way more books than we sell of short adventures. Those will continue to be made in baseball bat-proof hardcovers because we want to do them that way. So don't worry about that. I too, love hardcover books; so we will not abandon them for our main product lines.
That being said, I still want to make short adventures a couple times a year.
In other news--the books will likely have page counts of approximately 24-60, depending on title and system (PF is a lot bigger). So they are still a pretty darn good deal at the price--especially when you get the 16 unit lot.
I think everyone understands the 32 and 48 book buys---that is for the completionist customers who want 2-3 game systems of the total set.
ps--We also targeted the adventure levels based on customer feedback (you all said no more low or super high level stuff--so we went mid-level in response (that one was over 80% on the surveys).
These adventures are solid, with something for every gamer. From the FR feel of Ed to the creepy, surreal style of Lance, combat heavy Curtis adventure, and thinking man nature-based Sustarre, and I think all of our fans know how Tom writes. Every one of these 16 adventures will get use and is useful to a GM running games that last 2-3 sessions before moving on to the next thing.
Bill
There you have it. From the Frog's mouth.

Kevin Crawford (Stars Without Number) Did an AMA on Reddit - Interesting piece on Free vs PWYW

I'm an infrequent visitor to Reddit. I find it difficult to navigate and finding value is often a needle in a haystack route. Thankfully, someone else follows closer than me, and I found this link last week on Google Plus:

https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/6splp1/i_am_kevin_crawford_author_of_stars_without/#bottom-comments

Kevin has a lot to say. Heck, the whole thread makes for interesting reading. The piece that struck me is this:

I'm confident that SWN would've died in its crib if I hadn't released the base game for free.
When you're a small RPG publisher, your biggest enemy isn't production expense. It's not retail accessibility. It's simply being noticed. Between Amazon and OneBookShelf and Scribus and stock art, anybody with the price of a burger can get a game or a supplement onto the market. And anybody has. Your offering is struggling for notice in a sea of other games, and you haven't got the fanbase to spread word of what you're doing. Your only chance is to pique some casual reader's curiosity enough to get them to download your product and give it a glance.
It is much, much easier to do that when there's no price attached. From what I've seen, even Pay What You Want products lose downloads because people don't even like the implicit social contract of maybe theoretically having to pay if they like it. They don't want to deal with that, so they just don't download it. A completely-free, fully-playable product that shows what you can do is what a lot of small publishers need to convince readers that they're worth spending money on.
Of course, that then implies that there is something else they can spend money on. An open door isn't very helpful if there's nothing in the room beyond. And all too often, small publishers work like the devil to make their game and then don't do anything more to support it. It's perfectly fine if that's what they want to do, but if they want to make a modest business out of their work, they need to think beyond the present creation.
I'm pretty sure Swords & Wizardry Light would not have received the same reception without being available for free in PDF and Print.

There is this ongoing discussion of Free vs Pay when it comes to RPGs. The community loves free. The community is willing to pay. How do you get the two to meet?

Kevin's idea of giving away the rules for free and charging for support material has merit. In some ways, its like PWYW with a higher incentive to try because there is no pressure to "buy"

I agree with Kevin that support is where this all comes together. You can offer the best ruleset in the world for free, but without support and follow up products you are leaving money on the table as well as disappointed fans. Might not be much, but something is better than nothing and if you did the right thing with your free rules you'll have a happy market for your not quite free follow up material.

Of course, this doesn't always apply to Frog God Games. I think there is more free support for SWL in PDF and Print in the immediate pipeline...
