Deal of the Day - DungeonMorph Delves and Descriptions: Crypts, Lairs, & Sewers Edition

I've been a huge fan of Inkwell Designs for well over a decade. I believe their DungeonMorpg Dice was an early pickup and are still a cherished part of my dice collection.

DungeonMorph Delves and Descriptions: Crypts, Lairs, & Sewers Edition is today's Deal of the Day. Normally 14.99 in PDF, it is on sale until tomorrow morning for 4 bucks. TREASURE TROVE OF ADVENTURE!

This book contains every DungeonMorph Map from our Crypts, Lairs, & Sewers sets and can be used on its own. It also works seamlessly with our DungeonMorph Tiles, Cards, and Dice (Crypts, Lairs, & Sewers sets).

[As part of this product's Deal of the Day ,all our Dungeonmorphs are on sale!]

In the book, each DungeonMorph map has a full page of ideas! Each design is broken down into a couple of encounter areas, and each area has six ideas of how to use it.  The first three ideas follow a theme. For example, idea #1 of each crypt area is about a dynastic necropolis while idea #2 of each crypt area is an oubliette of torture and idea #3 revolves around a necromancer's fortress.  The other three ideas of each area are not connected--usable with any theme with some customization.

In all, that means the book has:

Thousands of area descriptions.

Nine themes across three sets (Crypts, Lairs, Sewers--Three themes each)

Enough maps and ideas for 18 mega dungeons

Endless combinations for smaller adventure settings like hillside lairs, sewer fortifications, and lost shrines

Appendix tables for custom magic items, artwork, traps, prisoners, supply stashes, and more

Also included: a Delving procedure with pre-built frameworks and a template to make your own, so you can play any fantasy tabletop RPG solo or co-op without a dedicated Game Master. Use DungeonMorphs for your maps, and use the Delving framework to determine your quest goal, room features, complications, traps, foes—and treasure!

Kickstarter - Fantasy Sidequest & NPC Decks (Inkwell Designs)

I've been a fan of Inkwell Designs since the early days of Kickstarter when I backed the stock art project he had organized. Later, I found his Dungeonmorph Dice, and before I knew it I was grabbing every deck he put on the market.

Joe's latest Kickstarter is Fantasy Sidequest & NPC Decks. Another useful resource for the DM who likes to improv or run their sessions with minimal prep. More decks, I'm collecting them like dice at this point ;)

How Do These Decks Help GMs?

Improvise: Did a player take an off-hand NPC comment as a real plot hook?  Tell your group to take a snack break, skim a few Sidequests cards that have summaries at the top, pick one, read the short outline, and play!  Or do the players want to chat with some NPCs you don't have prepared?  Glance at a few NPC cards, pick one, and be ready to go!

Create an Adventure: Read some of the Sidequest card summaries and find one that fits the current situation, start with the given outline and flesh it out (add and detail your campaign's locations and NPCs), and you're ready for your next session or two.  Don't have enough NPCs in your campaign?  Pick an NPC Portraits Deck and you've got 50+ more characters ready to go complete with portraits, personalities, backgrounds, quirks and more!

Plan a Campaign: Pick the Sidequest deck that best fits your campaign's genre and setting, then skim the summaries of many of the cards.  Choose several cards that will be possible adventures for your party.  Set their locations in your campaign's starting area.  Then brainstorm a rumor or two for each to feed your player characters.  See which they are most interested in and play!  Use the matching NPC Portraits Deck for well-developed NPCs with personalities, secrets, needs, and histories.

More About Sidequest Decks

Whether you're a seasoned GM or just starting out, Sidequest Decks are a tremendous resource helping you guide your players through captivating mini-adventures that add depth, excitement, and surprise to your campaigns.

Each deck has 54+ poker-sized cards. Each card has a map on one side and a system neutral mini-adventure outline on the other side. The outline starts with a short overview for the GM. (Skim these to find an adventure that fits the circumstances.) Choose between a couple of story hooks to get the adventure started. Next several encounter ideas move the game along. Customize them depending on what your players do (drop some, change them to fit the circumstances). Finally most cards wrap up with one or two follow-up adventure ideas. The sample card above is from our Mini-Lairs deck, which has more detail in the Encounter Key, but no follow-up ideas.

More About NPC Portraits Decks

Each NPC Portraits Deck also has 54+ poker sized cards. Each card is a character, with a portrait on one side and suggestions for playing the NPC on the other. The portrait on the front of the card can inspire the GM and spark the imagination of the players. Top-notch writing on the back details the character's personality and background with story hooks sprinkled throughout.

Bundle of Holding - Worldographer (Mapping Software)

I've been a huge fan of Inkwell Designs for the better part of a decade, first encountering Joe's projects with his Monster Stock Art Kickstarter and his Dungeonmorph Dice. I've been dabbling with Inkwell's mapping programs for years.

On Bundle of Holding, you can snag the complete Worldographer Mapping Collection, with World, Dungeon, and City mapping programs for $29.95. Full details are below (and you can test drive for free).

Adventurer! This all-new Worldographer Bundle presents license keys and Icon Sets for Worldographer, the easy-to-use software from Inkwell Ideas that lets you quickly craft maps of worlds, kingdoms, cities, villages, and dungeons for tabletop fantasy roleplaying games. Whether you run Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux, Worldographer lets you make colorful hexmaps and square-grid battlemats step-by-step in minutes. The program can also autogenerate a map – anything from a wayside inn to a complete campaign world – and can annotate your map with details and special features, all fully editable. Import Inkwell's Icon Sets or your own graphics to customize your maps. The only limit on map size is your computer's memory.

Download the Worldographer program free at the Worldographer.com website. Try it out – there's no charge, no obligation, and no time limit, but the free version has limited features. If you like Worldographer, return here to get a bargain-priced set of license keys that permanently unlock the full-featured Pro Versions of the main program and its city and dungeon expansions. No subscription or additional purchase is required.

For just US$29.95 you get a set of six unique one-use license keys (retail value $90) – three for the Worldographer Pro Versions (the Worldographer base program and its Settlement and Battlemat expansions) and (for convenience) three for the legacy programs Hexographer, Cityographer, and Dungeonographer.

And if you pay more than the threshold price of $41.01, you'll level up and also get our entire Icon Set Collection with eleven Hex Map Icon Sets worth an additional $65 that enhance Worldographer or any mapping program, including Alternate Classic Hex Map Icons, Alternate Classic Expanded, Mountains, Swamps, Forest, Arctic, Coasts, Undersea, Mines, Shops & More, and High Magic. Unlike the main Worldographer program, your Icon Sets are hosted here on the Bundle of Holding site and in your linked DriveThruRPG Library.

Check out some Worldographer examples, the online manual and advanced instructions, useful how-it-works blog entries, and Inkwell's YouTube tutorial videos.

Sale - SideQuest Decks 1.99 in PDF (Inkwell Designs)

I've been a huge Inkwell Designs fan since their first Dungeonmorph Dice Set years ago. Currently, Inkwell has a sale on their SideQuest Decks Collection. There are a total of 16 decks, each at 1.99 in PDF. Print decks are available too (and I own most decks in print) and I find the decks extremely useful when you need an adventure "on-demand" on short notice.

I do not know how long the sale will continue for, so don't wait too long.

Deal of the Day - Sidequest Decks: Monster Hunts (Inkwell Designs)

I've been a huge fan of Inkwell Designs for years. Mapping programs, stock art, and Dungeonmorph Dice are all awesome resources. But the Sidequest Decks are where I've gotten the most use. I've used them to prepare a night's adventuring with literally 10 minutes of prep, as I always keep a deck or two in my gaming bag just for such occasions. I can't speak highly enough of the Inkwell Designs Sidequest Decks.

If you've never owned one of Joe's decks, today's Deal of the Day is your chance to grab Sidequest Decks: Monster Hunts in PDF for 2 bucks (normally $5 in PDF). I just realized I don't own this deck, so I'm springing for the print deck and will likely bring it to NTRPG Con, in case I run a pickup game or two ;)

This deck has nearly 70 sidequests centered on many different traditional fantasy monsters!

Each card is a mini-adventure. One side is an outline which starts with some background game master information then a couple of ways to begin the quest. Next are several key encounter ideas (use some or all of them or modify them, based on your party’s actions), and finally a follow-up idea or two. The other side of the card is the main map for the adventure. Need more maps for other encounters? Fan through the cards and you’re sure to find something that fits the situation.

Like most of our Sidequest Decks, each card is designed to be its own quest. However, this deck includes two cards which list which monsters are on each card. Combine that with a list of which monsters have what traits on the Inkwell Ideas website (search Inkwell Ideas Monsters by Feature), and you can pick a few sidequests for your PCs to collect monster parts needed to craft a magic item or perform an arcane ritual!

Kickstarter - RPG Sidequest Decks (Sytem Neutral)

Every card is a mini-adventure! A map on one side, outline on the other: GM info, story hooks, encounter plot points, & follow-up ideas.

A few years ago, after I retired and well before The Year of the Pandemic, I was in a face-to-face gaming group out in Suffolk County, New York. We had been playing AD&D 1e for months (although it could have been for years as I joined late in the campaign). Our regular DM decided to take a break, and I was tasked with running the next campaign. The issue at hand was I did not know I was tasked with running the said campaign and had nothing prepared for the session. Ack!

I had the group take 10 minutes and I got to work. I pulled out a handy RPG Sidequest Deck from Inkwell that I had purchased prior and always carried in my Gaming GoTo Bag for just such an emergency. I quickly found a map that inspired me, made a few notes based on the short write-up on the card and did some fleshing out, broke out the Swords & Wizardry Light Rules, and we were rolling characters at the end of the prior promised 10 minutes. Three hours later we finished up a full and fulfilling gaming session.

I simply LOVE Inkwell's SideQuest Decks, and I'm happy to say I'm backing the RPG SideQuest Decks Kickstarter. A single deck is 12 bucks, 10 decks are 100 bucks. (I'll let you guess how many decks I'm backing for ;) Honestly, you can't go wrong, especially if you are a DM that likes to run games by the seat of your pants.

Sidequest Decks are system agnostic tabletop RPG plot outlines & maps. They  are perfect to pull out when your players unexpectedly take a casual  comment for a story hook and you need an adventure idea, or for planning  what dangers lurk in your kingdom. You may even chain several together for an entire campaign!

Each poker-sized card has a map on one side and a mini-adventure outline on the other side. The outline starts with a short description for the GM.  (Skim these to find an adventure that fits the circumstances.) Choose  between a couple of story hooks to get the adventure started. Next several encounter ideas move the game along. Customize them to match what your players do (drop some, change them to fit circumstances). Finally each card wraps up with one or two follow-up adventure ideas.

We've made 11 of these decks over the past few years, and now we're planning four more.

Kickstarter - Dungeonmorphs Revenge: RPG Dice & Cards

Strangely enough, I actually have two sets of the original Dungeonmorph Dice, as Rach won a set at NTRPG Con a few years back. She has no clue what to use the dice for, but she cherishes them greatly. Alright, technically I don't have two sets, as Rach has one set, but who's really counting ;)

Personally, I love them for inspiration. I'm very much a DM that likes to improve and the Dungeonmorph Dice and accompanying cards are very much a high water level in my DM's Toolbox.

So, what does the Dungeonmorphs Revenge RPG Dice & Cards Kickstarter offer for your DM's toolbox?

  • 3 new dice sets (2 dungeons, 1 cavern set), a matching set of 2.5"x2.5" cards, a matching font, and a matching set of 10"x10" battlemat style cards. Each card set and the font have all 90 designs from all 3 dice sets. There is also a PDF of the 2.5" cards and one of the 10" cards.
  • Also available are our 3 original dungeon & cavern dice sets. (2 dungeon sets, 1 cavern set; 5 dice each). The dice have been upgraded since our original Kickstarter with a prettier stone pattern. These dice sets also have a single set of 90 matching 2.5"x2.5" cards (and PDF) and a matching font. (But no 10"x10" cards.)
  • Likewise, our city, village, and ruined city dice sets (5 dice each) are available through the Kickstarter. They too have a matching set of 90 2.5"x2.5" cards (and PDF) and a matching font. (But no 10"x10 cards.)

Dice Specifications

  • Three different sets of 5 dice each, with a different design on each side of each die. (90 geomorph designs.)
  •  25mm (just about 1 inch cube) dice. 1" dice have enough space to show a 10x10 grid with good detail.
  • White die with a black design.   The design will be engraved into the die, so it will not wear off.
  • The designs will have a small letter on each side to differentiate the dice and make it easy to jot down the position of each design so you can set them back up easily.

Notes about Rewards

  • You will pick the specific sets of dice, cards, etc. you want through our pledge manager after the Kickstarter ends.
  • If you want just the 3 new dice sets, pick the $50 reward.  If you missed our cities, ruined cities, and villages set or the original dungeons & caverns set, pick the $95 6 dice sets reward. If you missed all of them, pick the $135 9 dice sets Kickstarter to get them all!
  • If you want all the new stuff, pick the $115 reward and you'll be able to get the 3 new dice sets, the new 2.5" cards, and the new 10" battlemats. Add $5 if you also want the new font files.
I'm not sure what level I'll be backing at yet, but back I will :)

Joe's Kickstarter record is matched by few. His are always safe picks.

Inkwell Designs - SideQuest Decks - Pick a Card, Any card (or store)

Inkwell Designs has its SideQuest Decks available to order from three different store fronts:

Amazon - $14.95 with free Prime shipping

RPGNow - $14.95 with the PDF of the deck included

Inkwell Designs - $13.95 with the PDF of the deck included

From the Inkwell site:
We’re excited to revise, expand & update our popular Encounter Decks to Sidequest Decks!
Why the name change?  It is a more accurate description.  As you likely know, each card is a mini-adventure, not just one encounter.
What else is new?  Decks 1 & 2 didn’t have the map match the adventure on the other side of the same card.  Now the map is the most important/unique map to the adventure, as in Decks 3 & 4.  If the adventure needs other maps you may pick another card’s map as needed.  Also, Decks 1, 2, and 3 have been sorted into four new decks based on sub-genre/setting and new adventures have been added.  Another improvement: many new maps have been added even for previous adventure outlines to ensure the map matches the adventure.  The new maps are wonderful and some older maps have been tweaked for easier reading. Deck 4 (Science Fiction) only changed the name.
I have the original decks and their are great for inspiration (or emergency adventures when unprepared)

Given the choice I'd get the decks directly through Inkwell Design, as +Joe Wetzel will keep a bigger cut of the price and supporting publishers is where's its at. Purchases made through The Tavern's Amazon or RPGNow affiliate links will generate a portion of the sales to support The Tavern, but I'd rather you support Joe directly. He offers some really solid releases for the gaming community.

OSR Creature Decks - 5 Decks IN PRINT - $12.95 - Inkwell Designs

If you haven't checked out +Joe Wetzel / Inkwell Designs' Creature Decks for 0e / 1e / LL/  OSR, you've been missing out. Normally 10 bucks to 12 bucks a deck, you can get all 5 decks of creatures for just $12.95 and that includes the PDF files.

What is covered by the actual decks?

This is a HUGE discount and I'm not sure how long Joe will keep the prices in effect. No coupon required.

Oh, yeah - if you play those "other" systems, those card decks are also on sale: 5e, PF, Dungeon World, Fate and even System Neutral.

I already have a complete collection of these cards for the OSR and will be using them quite liberally or else I'd be all over this.

Disclaimer - I make no monies off of any of the sales from Joe's store. I STRONGLY endorse Joe's Creature Decks. The art is awesome and the utility is great. At these prices you would be a fool to pass this up. 'Nuff said.

New Release - Monster Stand-Ins Virtual Table Top Tokens v1 (what it says on the tin)

I've been using Roll20 pretty much from release. Although I use Fog of War to reveal the map for the players, I really haven't used tokens. I'm tempted to change that in the future.

Monster Stand-Ins Virtual Table Top Tokens v1 is from Inkwell Ideas. If you don't know Inkwell Ideas, you probably know Hexographer, one of the easiest to use mapping programs in the hobby. Well, Inkwell has also published stock art and related projects, so VTT Tokens should be a perfect next step for them.

With Monster Stand-Ins VTT Tokens v1, you get over 80 monsters with over 130 different images for $2.95. That's a huge amount of bang for your buck.

So yeah, very tempted to spend a few bucks and start using minis, er... I mean TOKENS in my upcoming Swords & Wizardry Light sessions.

Remember, all purchases using The Tavern's OBS affiliate links puts 5% of your purchase price into The Tavern's coffers. Don't leave that money on the table for the greedy corps! Tip your barman!  ;)

Kickstarter - Worldographer: Hexographer 2 - Easy Map/World Creator (Happy Mapping)

I'm way behind on showcasing some of the Kickstarters that really excite me, so bear with mw over the next few posts as I attempt to catch up. Things can move fast when you don't pay attention, and I've been doing my darnedest NOT to find really cool Kickstarters. I need to budget a bit over the next few months.

Then I see that stuff like +Joe Wetzel 's Worldographer Kickstarter, where he takes Hexographer and basically turns it up to 11 (Spinal Tap anyone?)

I've had a lot of success with Hexographer. The learning curve is very small, and for someone like me that has ideas but lacks many of the technical skills to implement them, Hexographer is awesome. I'd like to call it idiot proof, but I'm sure if we look hard enough...

Anyhow, here's some the the new, key features for Worldographer:

  • A new architecture allows us to have undo/redo functionality.
  • Better "child maps." Create a world map and from that same map create a continent level map as well as a kingdom level map. It will remain one file so most changes to one level map will be reflected in the others.
  • Hexographer's rather simple "note" functionality can expand to allow you to detail each location as well as things about your world not tied to a location: religions, cultures, important NPCs, etc. It becomes an interactive Gazetteer!
  • We're adding an entirely new, more realistic icon set to the software.
  • Polygons, Lines, Ovals, etc. have more options for shadows and textures.
  • Easy drag and drop of labels and features: Most apps make this tricky, but we're improving it.
  • Icosohedral Maps have been planned into Worldographer from the beginning.
  • Configuration of new terrain, features, and textures is much easier. (Just drop files to a specific folder.)
  • The new user interface framework gives the software a cleaner look.
  • Mini-generators create details for notes about cities, castles, ruins, etc.

What's a "child map" you may ask?

I backed at $50 without giving it a thought. It really was that simple a decision.

Do you need to generate geographical maps for your campaign? Look no further.

Did I mention Joe even hangs out on the Wednesday Night Tavern Chats on occasion? Yep, he's that kinda down to earth guy. Oh, and it launched just over 2 days ago and it's nearly funded. Damn.

Now I need to get back to work ;)

Kickstarter - 5e Creature Decks (Inkwell Ideas)

If you are playing D&D 5e, the 5e Creature Cards really should be a no brainer. Inkwell Ideas has run Kickstarters for stock art and creature decks before. I've backed them all. I doubt I'll be running a 5e game soon, but if I were I'd be all over this.

Why?

First off, most of the art is already done from the previous projects and the art is good.

Second, Inkwell Ideas has a proven record of delivering. They also offer some amazing mapping programs.

Third, I have the prior decks. They are POD via RPGNow and are high quality and should stand up to repeated use at the gaming table.

Ah, who am I kidding? I'm going to get the 5e decks for the new art and the off chance I run some 5e in the future.

Note that the art for the basic animals and insects is mostly B&W and some creatures may be doubled up on one card. (The giant version may be added to the main card for that animal/insect.)

There will also be several extra "lair" cards for some creatures which have lair actions.  This especially applies to the deck that includes the dragons, but several other creatures also have lair actions such as the Aboleth, Kraken, Lich, both Sphinxes and the Vampire.

RPGNow Deal of the Day - Creature Decks: Fate Core RPG Aberrations & Magical Beasts (and also On Sale in OSR and System Neutral Versions)

I just woke up 30 minutes ago. I'm surprised the dog was happy to go a second round of sleeping after she slept all night with Rach (and I got home from work at 630 AM - these overnights are a biatch.) What do a find in my email upon getting to my desk? A note from +Joe Wetzel , he of Inkwell Designs.

It appears that Creature Decks: Fate Core RPG Aberrations & Magical Beasts is the Deal of the Day at RPGNow, at least until 11 am tomorrow morning. $2.38 for the PDF and $8.95 for Print & PDF. If only I grocked FATE.

But wait!

All of the Creature Decks are on sale. The rest are priced at $2.95 PDF and $8.95 for Print & PDF. Notice that bit? The printed cards are normally $11.95 a deck and you can get the Print & PDF for $8.95.

In an OSR version at that!

I'm grabbing all 5 decks in the OSR version. They are simply a great resource for use at the table in game - if you like to run a sandbox, the Creature Decks along with the Encounter Decks (priced at 1 buck more and I have sitting at my desk) are priceless resources.

Free Stuff of the Week - Inkwell Stock Art: Ogre

I know a decent number of the smaller publishers in our hobby, and I'm constantly reminded that one of the biggest expenses in getting any product out isn't the writing, but the art. Getting original pieces of art made for your project can be cost prohibitive, thus the use of stock art.

With stock art, you license the use of the art for use in your projects  but others may also do the same. You license isn't exclusive - others may also use the art in their projects, but the price is generally much more affordable then getting artwork made specifically for your project.

Inkwell Designs has a large amount of high quality monster stock art for sale at RPGNow, and they even have their Ogre Stock Art available for free for you to use in your projects. Can't beat that.

Inkwell Designs also has a Kickstarter running with a whole new assortment of Monster Stock Art.

Talking About Maps - Cityographer Kickstarter Has Hit Goal

You know what's funny?  I actually forgot I had licenses for both Dungeonographer and Hexographer.  Kinda happens when you change from Windows to Mac and figure 95% of your stuff won't port.  Well, surprise surprise, the mapping programs from Inkwell Ideas install to either OS.  It just took the Cityographer Kickstarter to remind me I had the other mapping programs.

Both Dungeonographer and Hexographer give you random maps that you can tweak (and you can tweak before the random part too).  As I said in my last post, I can't draw a map to save my life, so these two little programs can certainly be game savers for me.

Cityographer is no different.  Or maybe it is different, because it's cities and not dungeons or wilderness.  Still, it's there to help the GM, and as I'm finding, I need all the help I can get.

It's hit it's $10k mark for funding with 5 days to go, so you know it's going to actually "be" ;)

Here's some words from the Kickstarter:

Do your players ever take a game session in a different direction and you need a quick city or village?  Or maybe you want to cut down on your game's prep time by getting some help creating some of the cities or villages in your game's setting?  (Whether you want the system to do 90% of the work or just 20%--customize the results as much as you want.)
Cityographer is the perfect solution for these situations!  You set some preferences for the city you want (technology level, population size, whether the city has a river, if it is on the coast, etc.) on a setup screen and it will randomly generate an entire village or city for you.  (You can also start with a blank map/city.)
Not only will the program generate the city's map, but it will generate simple floorplans of the buildings, and each building's residents and any important belongings.  If the building is a business you'll also get a list of the staff and a menu or price list of products available.
Further, everything and anything can be fully or individually re-generated or hand edited!  So if you don't like the whole city, just start over.  But if you simply don't like the placement of a few buildings, move them or delete them and add new ones.  If you don't like a particular building just regenerate it or an aspect of it.  For example if the building is an inn, regenerate it or regenerate just the staff or just the price list or hand edit any particular item!

I think I've become a Kickstarter addict ;)
