I'm a huge fan of Castles & Crusades and have nearly every printing of the Player's Handbook and the C&C White Box. I'm all in on the Castles & Crusades Starter Kit.
In your hands you hold the very font of imagination, where all things can become real. Play as mighty warriors and weavers of powerful spells, face off against terrible dragons, giants, and monsters of lore. Win gold and glory, or die trying.
Castles & Crusades—the best in fantasy gaming is finally available in an introductory box set. Within this box, you will find 3 booklets specifically designed to help new players learn what a role playing game is, how to play and how to use Castles & Crusades to bring to life exciting adventures for you and your friends and family. You will learn how to create scenarios, people them with monsters and how to create characters to embark on unforgettable stories of high adventure.
Book 1 Character Creation is all about players, and includes an immersive and detailed example of play, where YOU get to join the fray without having to know anything in advance. It also teaches how to generate a character, how to inhabit the role of that character, how to equip, create descriptions and use that character’s abilities. With these rules, a character can be taken all the way from 1st to 6th level!
Booklet 2 Directing the Game is all about the Castle Keeper, the world builder. The Castle Keeper acts as the game’s referee and in Directing the Game you learn how to run the game, how to build your own fantasy world, and how to handle any situation.

When I returned to tabletop RPGs in the early aughts, I found Castles & Crusades on Buy.com for 10 bucks, and I have been fascinated with it ever since. It feels very much like AD&D 1e, but built with the 3x engine.
In response to the great OGL fiasco of 2022, Troll Lord Games has decided to rewrite Castles & Crusades without referring to the SRD or the OGL. Thus we have Castles & Crusades Reforged Kickstarter.
Castles & Crusades is a TTRPG that focuses on imaginative gameplay, allowing everyone in the gaming community to utilize whatever play styles they desire. NOW with revised non-OGL content.
Its primary purpose is to give those who play the game an adaptable, responsive, easy to use mechanic that does not force any one style of play on the participants, and which does not restrict any playing style.
The system was designed to be rules light, allowing new players to learn the system in under 15 minutes and make their characters in the same space of time.
To achieve this, a simple and logical attribute check system, the SIEGE Engine, was created. By downplaying the role of rules in the game, it encourages imaginative play, unrestricted by predetermined rule sets.
Castles & Crusades was first created in 2003/2004 and debuted in Christmas of that '04. It was the first to use a simple attribute based system as its key mechanic. It predated and in many ways sparked the OSR publications that followed and heavily influenced D&D 5th edition. The core of this game has remained unchanged but for minor edits and a few revision. It has played the same all these years. Now with the revised non-OGL content, though it plays the same, even faster!

We are beyond pleased and honored to announce that the powers that be have released multiple works of the late Gary Gygax to Troll Lord Games for mass-market publication. These include the complete Gygaxian Fantasy World series, Castle Zagyg: Yggsburg, Castle Zagyg: East Mark, Castle Zagyg: The Manse, Castle Zagyg: Mouths of Madness, Castle Zagyg: The Dungeons (including all 17 handcrafted levels and any sublevels), and all related Castle Zagyg adventures such as the Teeth of Barkash Nour, The Halls of Many Panes, The Hermit, and the Kings of England Kings of France boardgame. See below for details.
THE FATHER OF A HOBBY & INDUSTRY
Though Gary Gygax was not alone in creating role playing games, others like Dave Arneson certainly played a part, it is to Gary’s drive, creativity, expertise, and sheer love of gaming that launched it from a basement hobby for a passionate few, into an industry that spans multiple media platforms.
What You Need to Know Right Now
Currently we are set to launch the Gygaxian Fantasy World Kickstarter campaign this March. Be sure to sign up and be there for any early bird specials!
The Kickstarter campaign for Gary Gygax’s The Hermit ended in December of 2023, support for which broke six digits! Fear not if you missed the Kickstarter, for you can pre-order The Hermit on our website and receive yours when it becomes available this spring.
Furthermore, we still have copies of the classic printing of Gary Gygax’s Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh. This classic reprint relaunched the Gygax Estates properties, and a host of folks came out to order it, support TLG and the Estate, and help launch this whole endeavor. A hearty thanks to all those people, but if you missed it, you can buy yours now in our store. It ships immediately!
TROLL LORD GAMES
Troll Lord Games served as Gary’s primary publisher from 2000-2008. After he crossed over much of Gary’s material vanished from the gaming table. Now we hope to launch a new era of publishing, bringing back the many rich worlds of Gary Gygax.
Gygaxian Fantasy World Series
The Gygaxian Fantasy Worlds (be sure to SIGN UP NOW for notifications) is an Encyclopedic series envisioned by the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax. He conceived the series as an open-ended collection of role-playing gaming aids for the Game Master and the Player, the specific focus of which was World Building. Written, co-written, or edited by Gygax himself, its intent was to cover all the bases of our gaming world.
The first of these books, The Canting Crew, was published in 2001. Six more volumes followed, and more were planned prior to his passing in 2008.
Now, for the first time since they were pulled from the market in 2008, this collection of Gygaxian knowledge returns to the gaming world. Through this Kickstarter we hope to bring back all seven volumes and possibly more. Join us in recreating part of our gaming heritage and flood your own table with mountains of gaming content.
For a complete list of the Castle Zagyg material see below.
WHY CASTLES & CRUSADES
In 2003 Gary opened a discussion with Steve Chenault about Castle Zagyg. He did not want it to appear under the Dungeons & Dragons name or game system. When the Troll Lords proposed that we make Castles & Crusades compatible with his vision for a game for Castle Zagyg he heartly agreed. Both he and Steve wanted C&C to be near to AD&D, so it worked well. Gary was given the right of approval of the rules, and did so with few corrections, so that when Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh and Upper were finally published, they launched with the Castles & Crusades SIEGE Engine system. We will pick up with his wishes where we left off in 2008.
Castle Zagyg
We are going to revisit Gary Gygax’s Castle Zagyg like never before, but much like we intended in years past. This project is massive!
Mike Stewart, known for his Victorious RPG and many adventures like Shadows of the Halfling Hall, has come on board as the head writer. But he won’t be alone, Luke Gygax joins him as does James M. Ward, Jason Vey, Jeremy Farkas and Davis Chenault. Peter Bradley and Bill Edmunds on cartography.
This project will include several major areas:
Castle Zagyg The City of Yggsburg
Castle Zagyg Yggsburg Environs (24 neighborhoods of the city)
The East Mark Setting
Castle Zagyg: The Manse & Mouths of Madness
Castle Zagyg: The Dungeons, 17 levels
We’ve not yet settled on an organizational format but have settled on hardcover books with pockets in the back to hold the many maps that will come with this set.
MISSION STATEMENT
We are going to try to stay as true to Gary Gygax’s vision of his work as we possibly can. Steve and Davis Chenault and Peter Bradley all worked closely with Gary for almost 8 years and have a pretty good handle on what he wanted. On top of this, we will be consulting with family members such as Ernie and Luke Gygax, and long time friends like James M. Ward and Jeffrery Talanian to make these works as close to Gary’s vision as we can. New art! New maps! Layout and all, but Gary through and through.
Hall of Many Panes and Other Games
There is so much more to work on. Gary’s creative output was unmatched and even in the wanning years it continued to grow.
We were very happy to have launched The Hermit kickstarter (preorder here), and move toward bring that fabled adventure to your table.
But there is more. The Hall of Many Panes is on the deck. This massive planar adventure, written by Gary and originally published in 2005, is a monument to the bizarre and genius that was Gary’s gift to us all. We’ll bring this on up to date and republish in full color!
One of the projects near and dear to his heart was the Kings of England, Kings of France board game. We are going to dust off the old maps and playing pieces and bring this one back to the fold.

Seek gold and glory in worlds filled with treasure-hoarding dragons, terrifying undead, and creatures of legend in Troll Lord Games’ tabletop RPG Castles & Crusades!
Castles & Crusades was the first OSR game I found, finding the C&C Players Handbook for less than 10 bucks over at Buy.com.
It's a very solid system, plays very well, and has tons of support. It reminds me very much of AD&D 1e in its feel and play.

I'm quite sure you read of and/or heard of the recent uproar over WotC's plans to cancel the 1.0(a) OGL, upon which nearly every 3rd party D20 system/scenario/ campaign is built. If you only care about OSR material, you are well covered and have amazing value in the RPG Worlds by Kobold Press & Friends Humble Bundle. If you play 5e or are willing to convert from 5e to OSR, the value is off the charts.
I do enjoy a good holiday-themed adventure to read and even occasionally play ;) Frog God Games has had a strong run of amazing Christmas-themed adventures, and Beware the Yule Cat looks like it will hit a similar high water mark as its predecessors.
Beware the Yule Cat is 12 bucks in PDF or 24 bucks (plus shipping) for print plus PDF. There is a Print on Demand option for those overseas looking to potentially save a bit on overseas shipping.
You all know the cat of Christmas
— that cat was huge and fat.
No one knew where he came from
nor where he was at.
Night is falling across the frozen plains of the Northlands. It's Yule Eve, but you're tired, hungry, and footsore. Ahead lies the village of Köldhorn — Cold Corners in the Common tongue — where you are sure to find warmth, food, and shelter, especially on this festive night. But upon arrival you find the streets deserted, and the villagers hidden behind locked doors. Soon, you realize that you've inadvertently found yourselves in the middle of a generations-long struggle between the people of Cold Corners and the evil fae troll Grýla, her husband Leppalúði, their sons the mischievous Jólasveinar — or Yule Lads — and worst of all her favorite pet, the fierce Jólakötturinn, better known as the Yule Cat.

A roleplaying game of savage swords and secret sorcery. Inspired by the works of Karl E Wagner, Robert E Howard, and Charles Saunders.
I'm a huge fan of Swords & Sorcery settings and RPGs. There's just something exciting about the defaults built into the expectations built into the stories we have in our cultural library. For most, including myself, it brings up thoughts of Conan, Red Sonja, and the like.
The Swords & Chaos Kickstarter presents us with a D20 based S&S RPG. Familiar enough to the vast majority of gamers, with a resolution system that uses the Castles & Crusades Siege Engine. If you like C&C, Swords & Chaos will likely be a great fit (and a possible resource for an ongoing Castles & Crusades Campaign.
As a total aside, this Kickstarter will be using the same US-based printer that Troll Lord Games uses, so there is some basic insulation from the worldwide supply chain issues - books have been hit hard.
The Swords & Chaos PDF is 20 bucks and the print version is 50.

Castles & Crusades marked my return to RPGs. I remember finding the C&C Players Handbook at Buy.com for less than 10 bucks. Heck, I bought copies for the four members of my college RPG group that year, and it started our tradition of yearly gifting. C&C simply looks and feels a lot like AD&D 1e.
I also find it extremely easy to convert Castles & Crusades material to Swords &Wizardry on the fly (and I would assume it would be a similar process with other OSR systems from C&C).
A brigand and thief have slunk into Lord Wynn’s keep and pilfered several valuable carvings. Lord Wynn is offering a bit of gold for the return of the stolen goods, but he is offering a king’s ransom for the return of the thief.
“A king’s ransom. For a thief? Must have been some precious stick ‘o wood,” Bariston quizzically comments to those at the table.
“Aye! That’s right. I thin’ 1,000 coin. Oh, dat Walrun da Lord’s Sheriff, daren’t go follow dat thief. He crossed the Hruesen River and headed to the Blacktooth Ridge. Nary a soul here wants to make their way to the Ridge these days. Ole’ Red Cap is about they say. An dat devil is the least o’ your worries.”
The Blacktooth Ridge is no place for the weak, the inexperienced, or the fearful. The dangers there are many and rewards paltry. And this thief must be something other than a common rogue to head straight into the jaws of that deadly wilderness.
A Stranger Among Us is an overland adventure that pits your characters against dangers both rare and extraordinary. It is designed for use with a mid-level party of 4-6 characters.

Castles & Crusades was the system that marked my full-on return to tabletop RPGs. Sure, Warhammer 40k's Dark Heresy introduced me to the Fantasy Grounds VTT, but Castles & Crusades had me playing on a weekly basis. I'm very thankful that Rach was extremely understanding as we courted ;)
Heck, I bought copies of the first printing of the Castles &Crusades Player's Handbook for the members of my old high school & college gaming group, as it reminded me very much of AD&D 1e (and the copies were dirt cheap on Buy.com at the time). Good times.
Where I see Swords & Wizardry as the Rosetta Stone among OSR systems, allowing one to convert between OSR systems fairly seamlessly, I see Castles & Crusades filling a similar role between the OSR and 3.x Dungeons & Dragons. As such, C&C holds a special place in my gaming collection.
The Castles & Crusades City & Town Megapack Bundle offers what it says on the tin - 70 bucks worth of OSR ready cities and towns for your fantasy campaign for just 9.99 in PDF. I'd be all over this IF I didn't already own three out of four in print already. ;) This bundle is far cheaper than any one of these titles would be on their own. (Deal is good until the end of the day, Monday 4/19/21)
You get the following titles for your 9.99:
Castles & Crusades Bluffside City on the Edge ($20)
Castles & Crusades Free City of Eskadia ($18)
Castles & Crusades Heart of Glass ($13.99)
Castles & Crusades Town of Kalas ($18)

Wow. Normally I don't put up two posts in a day these days, let alone two posts in an hour, both Humble Bundle posts at that. But this bundle just went live and its too good to delay in sharing.
The highlights at a buck are Castles & Crusades Players Handbook, Demonspore, and The Borderlands. There's a whole lot more too :)
The picks at 8 bucks are Lost City of Barakus (an excellent smallish megadungeon for levels 1 thru 6 or so), Cults of the Sundered Kingdom, and the Northlands Saga Complete. And SO much more.
At 15 bucks you get: Barrowmaze Complete (if you don't have this yet, you need it!), Bards Gate (a city sourcebook / adventure and a thing of beauty), Whisper & Venom, and enough gaming material to last a lifetime.
Wow.
Simply wow.
I have 90% of this bundle and I'm in at 15 bucks :)

When Troll Lord Games Kickstarted its various historical sourcebooks for Castles & Crusades, I was all over it. Today, Codex Germania is the DTRPG Deal of the Day. You can snag a copy for 6.40 (normally 16 bucks)
While you are at it you can also grab copies of Codex Classicum(Greek, Etruscan and Roman myths) and Codex Slavorum (Slavic myths) for 6.40 apiece.
The Codex Germania unearths the mythological realms of the ancient Germans. From the murky forests of their beginnings rise the myths, the magic, gods, goddesses, monsters, heroes and legends of the ancient Germans, all brought to life for your Castles & Crusades game.
New Classes! New spells! More monsters!
Bring the Germanic World to the table!
Yep, those are affiliate links above. Affiliate Links are the easiest way to support The Tavern. I thank you in advance - Tenkar
While the world is making progress on Covid-19, a lot of us are still sheltering in place and find more time on our hands than we know what to do with. You can only rearrange the furniture so many times...
Why not do some gaming? We've been offering the two books below for free for over a month and continue to do so, but wouldn't you like some free monsters too?
We have resurrected the 3rd printing of the Monsters & Treasure! We offer this digital copy for free. We hope this helps alleviate the tedious side of the Pandemic and Quarantine. Enjoy! Stay safe and keep those hands clean!
There is light at the end of the tunnel, and we'll be through it sooner than you think, of that there is little doubt. In the meantime, we must all do our part and stay out of the public sphere. To help you through this, for a limited time you can download the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook for free. It's everything you need to run and play a game of Castles & Crusades. Also, enjoy A Houseless God and Other Tales, four short stories of Eurich Gunshoff and Ava, a ranger of some renown.
I have the "original" Castles & Crusades "White Box" from many years ago.
While Swords & Wizardry might be my true love among OSR rulesets, Castles & Crusades was the first love that brought me back to gaming.

Castles & Crusades was my return to gaming. I found the C&C Players Handbook first printing on the old Buy.com website and I was immediately hooked. Thanks to this post at the Multiverse blog: http://multiverse.world/blog/2018/07/02/what-is-the-osr-old-school-revival/ (well worth the reading( I've been inspired to do a series of podcast episodes covering various OSR ruleset. In the first episode of the series, I look at the beginning of the OSR.
The first in what will become an (ir)regular series of episodes. Hackmaster 4e to Castles & Crusades to OSRIC to Labyrinth Lord and finally to Swords & Wizardry, its the birth of the OSR.
