Deal of the Day - ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition

If memory serves me correctly, ICONS has been around in one form or another since 2010 or 2011. The revised, or "Assembled Edition" of ICONS came about in 2014. I've heard nothing but praise for ICONS, although I myself am not a huge fan of supers games. Love the genre in comic books and movies, less so in RPGs. Not sure why.

Until tomorrow morning, ICONS Superpowered Roleplaying: The Assembled Edition is on sale for 3 bucks in PDF (instead of its usual $15 pricing). At a $3 price point, it might be the supers game for you.

Kickstarter - Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland "Total Carnage Edition"

Continuing the Kickstarter streak, we now come to Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland "Total Carnage Edition".

So, what exactly is Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland "Total Carnage Edition"? We will need to go to the Kickstarter copy for this, as I don't think my wording would suffice.

A gonzo vomit-punk post apycolyptic cassette futurism table top RPG. A visceral mash-up of 80s/90s pop culture mixed in a grimdark blender and barfed onto the table! Siskel and Ebert would give Neon Lords of the Toxic Wasteland two big thumbs down! For fans of The Toxic Avenger and all the sleazy over the top late night sci-fi/horror you can handle! Here is the original write up from the 1st printing Kickstart:

Ultra-Violent, and style matters tabletop RPG, that builds off of the “BX” rules. Half Medieval Fantasy half Sci-Fi, neon lords of the toxic wasteland is a no-holds-barred to the max game! Oozing 80's and 90's nostalgia the game features items from Ninja Stars to Fanny packs in addition to many references to the era.

In addition to being built on top of the 'BX" rules, the core rules use an ability class points system and fortune points which grants the player some flexibility in dire rolls.

So, built on B/X means I can use this with any OSR ruleset of my choice and convenience. I missed this the first time around. I'm in on the rebound ;)

Kickstarter - Gary's Appendix OSE

Continuing with the Kickstarter-related postings, we come to Gary's Appendix OSE. The man behind the scenes is Jeff Jones, who happens to be the layout artist for both issues of the Torchlight Zine, as well as the main man behind the new-looking and revised Continual Light digest-sized ruleset coming later this year. So yes, I'm predisposed to liking Jeff's work ;)

What is Gary's Appendix OSE?

Gary’s Appendix is a collective effort by a creative menagerie to create a memorable zine for fantasy gamers. This is a first in a series of zines that explores the curious and fascinating parts of our beloved hobby in a way that is thought-provoking and useful.

The inspiration for this zine is the AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide. Gary wrote and collected a vast amount of information, rules, and guidance. Its haphazard nature and perplexing subjects makes it as fresh today as when he penned the work almost fifty years ago.

We do not have the audacity to believe that we can produce a work that matches that evergreen classic. Indeed, we draw inspiration from the past works of the gaming giants with no attempt to reproduce it. Gary's Appendix about our love for the past and our excitement for the future.

At three bucks for the PDF, or 15 plus shipping for print plus PDF, Gary's Appendix OSE really is an easy buy-in.

Kickstarter - Folio #29 The Ogre Arena Gaming Adventure! (for 1e & 5e)

I've been remiss on covering a number of Kickstarters that are currently funding that I find myself backing (or about to back). Expect to see Kickstarters covered here and on The Tavern's YouTube Channel over the next few days.

So, today I'm covering the latest release in the Folio Series. I've always enjoyed the various Folio releases, of which I have a nearly complete collection between print and PDF. The detachable covers on the print version just make my heart yearn for the gaming days of my youth in the 80s.

The current Kickstarter is Folio #29 The Ogre Arena Gaming Adventure! (for 1e & 5e). It's 5 bucks in PDF, 25 in Print plus PDF, and 15 bucks for the 4 parts currently released in PDF. If you want ALL of the Folio releases as of right now, which is 29 PDFs of the main run and 7 from the Folio's Black Label selection, it's 70 bucks in PDF. That is a Holy Shit level bargain!

Join the adventure as Art of the Genre  continues to add content to its first new mega-dungeon in over three  years!  This forth part of a six phase mega-campaign is based around  2nd-4th level characters  in a completely revolutionary setting.  I've specially designed the  dungeon to breathe new life into  those adventuring levels while allowing the DM the ability to create   incredible story arcs with old favorite monsters like lizardmen, giant serpents, huge toads, and even early fantasy RPG video game monsters inspired from classic crawls like Wizardry and Bard's Tale!

The Virgin Mine setting  revolves around an adventuring company moving into the wild jungles  ruins  around  the Imperial Capital city of Nextyaria. Here, they will  match wits against other treasure-seeking adventuring companies as well as the intelligent dungeon that hosts relic treasures with nearly unlimited  power.

Folio #29  will introduce characters to the next section of the massive Virgin Mine Dungeon,  the Ogre Arena!.   Unlike normal dungeons, this one carries  various mysteries and  wrinkles that 'bend' the rules of character  advancement, and strategy will need to be employed as  the party learns  the ropes within the Virgin Mine Dungeon setting.  Dungeon details include 2D standard hex maps as  well as fully 3D renderings of The Howling Dungeon section of The Virgin Mine.     A gazetteer section will give background on the new rules and the  exterior camps and companies. Several new monsters lurk within as well as new magical treasure.  It also features a fully removable and stand-alone cover in perfect OSR tradition that acts as a DM Screen!

End of the Game Year 2022 (Long Live 2023!)

End of the Game Year 2022 (Long Live 2023!)
Now I do not know about your neck of the woods, but where I am school started last week. GenCon was last weekend (quick aside, I really haven't seen any post GenCon drama this year...am I blind, or was it all just front-loaded this time?) which, to me, means that this year's Convention Season is officially over for 2022.

Yes, we do have gaming conventions still for this calendar year (Long Con anyone?), but I relate the gaming calendar a lot like the school year or the government's fiscal year in that they don't line up with the calendar year.....any convention happening for the rest of the calendar year occurs in next year's gaming year.

OK, so opinions and semantics aside, the end of the year should require end of the year type...."stuff". Last year I posted about post-convention letdown. Last year I was an unemployed "bum" who had been hired for the job I'd been fired from before I'd been fired and I was just waiting to start (same job, new employer and the old employer was fighting the handover......long, not-a-Tavern-story). Now that I'm gainfully employed, and into an appropriate, if not fully-set-up-space, it is time to do my personal end of year gaming review and start my plans for next, er this, gaming year.

Right now I'm only planning on attending one convention next year, North Texas RPG Con (link to the FB group). I might be able to squeeze in Long Con, but it's not something I can plan for yet until my work calendar has been finalized, which won't happen until October. I've already got my vacation request in for that con and I have my ticket purchased....so it's a done-deal in my book.

Right now my big plans for NTRPG is to remake my Whiskey Tasting Kits because I gave my old boxes away last year. I have my plans drawn out and *almost* all my components secured (I need to purchase new vials still) and I'm way ahead of schedule on purchasing the whiskey already. I have my 6 bottles already acquired, but until the kits are produced, I don't know if I can squeeze in a couple more bottles. My goal is to hopefully add another 1 or 2 vials and another kit or three to my larger tasting kit box. Last year the event was more popular than the first year's tasting and if I can make it a little bigger & better, well that's my goal.

I also have a few more projects planned, but most of those are not something I want to share 'cause I don't want to spoil the possible surprises. Some are personal pet projects and some are.... "professional"?

Although I'm keeping most of these projects secret, I will probably share as they come along...within reason. I'm not going to post the Whiskey/Whisky being tasted next year because that'd ruin things. Also, I have a special work trip to another country coming up and if I manage to find enough "drink" from said country I might do a last minute swap....

Anyway, it's the end of the gaming year and I'm encouraging YOU to take stock of the last year and at least make some loose plans for next year. Remember the 6P's: prior proper planning prevents poor performance.

Humble Bundle - MAPS Spectacular (Campaign Cartographer 3+)

I woke up today to a pleasant surprise. A new RPG-related bundle was up on Humble Bundle - MAPS Spectacular, a Campaign Cartographer 3+ software bundle.

Campaign Cartographer is regarded by many as the best RPG mapping software money can buy. The core Campaign Cartographer software is 45 bucks at the Pro Fantasy website. You can get the Campaign Cartographer 3+ software plus a suit of addons for 30 bucks via Humble Bundle (a $438 value). If you already have CC 3+, there are smaller bundles for add ons.

Note, CC 3+ is Windows only, but you can likely use Crossover or similar software to use it on OSX or Linux.

Deal of the Day - Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy: Rules Tome (and how to snag a copy and more for a buck)

Normally, I steer my readers towards Deals of the Day that I find very interesting without a second thought. The Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy: Rules Tome is something I can recommend without a second thought when offered for 10 bucks - half off its usual PDF pricing. Under normal circumstances, snagging the OSE rules at half off is a no-brainer. So, what if I could show you how to get The Old-School Essentials Classic Fantasy: Rules Tome PDF for $1, along with six other titles?

The current Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection over on Humble Bundle offers the OSE Classic Fantasy: Rules Tome PDF for as low as a buck.

Seriously. Why pay more? The Humble Bundle price is good for two more weeks ar I post this.

Bundle of Holding - Traveller5

Traveller was the first science fiction RPG I picked up back in my early days of gaming. I had the Starter Set, which was the original three LBBs laid out as a full-sized booklet in a box. It may have included dice, but as they were six-sided, I no longer remember, as I had plenty of those.

I never really gravitated to Mongoose Traveller when it was released, but I did get in on some version of Traveller which came on a disc and named a planet after me, with a laminated card or such. I think THAT version became Traveller 5. I could be wrong. I am far from a Traveller expert ;)

Traveller! This Traveller5 Quick Deal, featuring the Fifth Edition of the venerable Traveller tabletop science fiction roleplaying game, will be here and gone at lightspeed, so start your travels now!

For just US$17.95 you get DRM-free ebooks (retail value $69) of the complete 888-page Traveller5 Core Rules 3-Book Set, the T5 Starships & Spacecraft deck plans, and the T5 Gazelle-Class Close Escort guide.

Deal of the Day - A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe Third Edition

I have an earlier edition of A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe and it is one of the finest resources a DM/GM could ever ask for in their fantasy RPG campaign.

I haven't looked at the 3rd edition yet, but until tomorrow morning, August 10th at 11 am eastern, A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe Third Edition is on sale in PDF, marked down from 30 bucks in PDF (at that price, grab the print version for 35) down to 12 bucks in PDF. I can only assume the 3rd edition is better than the earlier edition I own, and I'd give the earlier edition 5 out of 5 stars.

Talking Crit LiveStream Special Guests for the Month of August - Holy Crap! What a Lineup!

Let me state this right now - the Talking Crit Livestream on Wednesday Nights usually doesn't have a guest lined up more than a week in advance. As of 10 minutes ago, we actually have special guests lined up for the next four weeks, and its an impressive lineup :)

This Wednesday, August 10th at 8 PM Eastern we have none other than Douglas Cole of Gaming Ballistic. Doug has turned Kickstarter into an art and is the man you'd likely want to confer with before launching your first project. Doug's current Kickstarter, Old-School Solo Adventures for OSE funded in an hour.

Next Wednesday, August 17th at 8 PM Eastern Bad Mike and I will be joined by Don Semora of Wizard Tower Games. Don will be launching the D20 Delving Kickstarter at the end of this week, which includes voice-over and editing by none other than Tim Kask.

The following Wednesday, August 24th at 8 PM Eastern, we will be joined by Ben Burns of New Big Comet Games. Ben will be launching a Kickstarter later this week and is the winner of the 2022 Three Castles Award for Game Design (actually, he's won it multiple times).

The last Wednesday of the month, August 31st at 8 PM Eastern, will feature Bill and Ben Barsh of Pacesetter Games & Simulations. Pacesetter has a number of titles available with the current Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection at Humble Bundle.

Edit:

The first Wednesday of next month, September 7th at 8 PM Eastern, will feature Thom Wilson of Shire Con. Thom also writes old-school gaming material, an old-school zine, has a number of Kickstarter under his belt, and donates work he's written for the NTRPG Con.

Damn! I'm still impressed ;)

Steve's the Man! (Thanks!!!!!)

Steve's the Man! (Thanks!!!!!)
Pretty sure I've covered this aspect of my personal life before, but in case I didn't....I travel for work. Not really a road-warrior, but still more than a fair bit. The nature of my business travel is a bit on the odd side as I'm usually gone for a two-week stretch, sometimes a solid month, at a time. There are obvious up & downsides, but as far as gaming goes....well I'm grateful to be in an online group.

This weekend I'm in the middle of a two-weeker only a state away from my home base, so I was allowed to drive. This made it possible to drive to the "big city" for a whirlwind 48 hour "vacation". It really wasn't a vacay, but I spent enough money that the only reason I'm not fretting about that fact is because I'm mentally checked out vacation-wise.....and I know it was a helluva lot cheaper than it would be if I had gone to GenCon instead.

Last night was my bi-weekly online game which I played from my hotel room, which was kind of odd for me because the entire group was, for once, in the same city during the game. It would've been the perfect time to trash and stink up the GM's house like we try to trash and stink up his game......

I did briefly get to visit with my GM and then one of my fellow players...and here's a shout-out to Steve, 'cause he's the man, which will be evident really damn soon. Note to anyone everyone: Steve better not be paying for any drinks at NTRPG Con next year or I'll have to kick my own ass.

So Steve reads this blog I think everyday, not even something I'll admit to, and he read about my wonderful foray into not getting a decent copy of the Deities & Demigods. So what does Steve do? He pretty much loads up one of every 1st edition hardcover and drives out of his way to my hotel to gift it to me! Oh and he makes sure to add the very Deities & Demigods edition I was eyeballing at that other place! The story I got was that he's trying to downsize his collection and these are like 3rd or 4th copies of stuff.

Home Bar V 1.0
Pic for attention...

Sure it is Steve, sure it is. Actually I believe him, but he makes it sound like I'm doing him a favor, which is almost laughable. Well I'm going to make sure he gets a little care package of some bottles that I need to "downsize" from my collection....and I do actually have a "collection", so I'm not just making that up (version 1.0 of my home bar pictured to the right). Luckily for me his favorite liquor is also mine, and he didn't mention liking the one type that I only have six bottles of 'cause it's not made anymore and I could only get every bottle that remained in Idaho. That stuff has to last me the rest of my life.....

Clearly I'm joking a bit 'cause I'd cough up one of *those* for this extremely generous OSR gift. I have digital copies of about half of them and a couple hardcovers in "meh" shape, but to be able to have my very own copies of just about everything.

Now I know I'll still be out & about at the used bookstore looking for earlier printings, holes in my collection, and just stuff in general, but that's because I really enjoy...well, the hunt, as it was. While I'm specifically thinking of OSR materials now, I just enjoy finding other things I know friends and family collects or thing I think they'll like. You never know when you'll come across a real gem and it is fun, at least for me, to find a great gift for a friend. I'm going to go out on a limb and hope that Steve enjoys the hunt as well, and honestly you might too.

Now if you don't mind, I have a little bit of light reading to do about the Cthulhu mythos....

Kickstarter - Old-School Solo Adventures by Gaming Ballistic (OSE)

First things first. I've known Douglas Cole for at least 9 years now. He was one of my regular players in The Tavern's "B-Team" about 7 years back, and we've remained good friends ever since. Doug is one of the most organized Kickstarter project managers I know, and I know a ton of folks that run Kickstarters. Aside from that, each Kickstarter Doug has run has been excellent to amazing in turnaround and quality of the product. The "due diligence" has been done with Doug, and he passes with flying colors.

Old-School Solo Adventures for OSE are four solo adventures for level 2nd through level 9 using the OSE rules. Yes, you can likely use the OSR ruleset of your choice without breaking anything. Additionally, if you want more OSE goodness, you can check out the Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection Humble Bundle for much more OSE-related titles, including the core boos in PDF.

I know the quality of Doug's work, and I don't think there is a Gaming Ballistic Kickstarter I haven't backed, regardless of the RPG system. Quality is consistent across systems. I'm in for Print plus PDF myself, and the Old-School Solo Adventures for OSE Kickstarter funded in an hour. I couldn't be more pleased.

Humble Bundle - Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection

Wow.

Quite simply Wow.

I own probably half the titles in this collection in print or PDF, but for 25 bucks I'm in for those that I DON'T already own.

Highlights for me are the Lost Lands Setting from Frog God Games(awesome AND open for other publishers), Highfell (Greg Gillespie at his finest), the OSE Core Books, StoneHeart Valley (also offered in print for a grand total of $45), and a crapton of other adventures.

The Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection from Humble Bundle is likely a lifetime of OSR gaming for you and your group for a mere 25 bucks. Sure, you can snag it for less (or more) but 25 bucks is a sweetspot you WILL NOT BEAT. Seriously.

Humble Bundle - Sounds of Adventure - Doctor Who Audio Dramas

I need to confess that my Doctor Who knowledge is from the earlier series of Doctor Who when they were on PBS in my teen years and early 20s. I seem to remember lots of funny-looking (and even funnier sounding) enemy robots, but the Doctor always found a way to succeed in the end.

I've become addicted to audiobooks and radio dramas in my later years, as I find them more engaging than the written word, while still giving my imagination full range to fill in the blanks with traditional books.

So, it looks like the current Humble Bundle for Doctor Who Audio Dramas is going to be my next pick-up.

18 bucks get you 17 titles. That's nearly a buck per drama. I can dig that :)

Kickstarter - Unleashed Arcana RPG Dice & DCC Sets along with D18s & D22s (Impact! Miniatures)

Dice. Fucking dice! They are my kryptonite. I can go weeks, even months, without looking for new ones, and then BAMN! I find cool dice that I want.

Note, I don't NEED any more dice. Shit, if I had any sort of self-control I wouldn't WANT any more dice. But I want them. They are my... precious.

Tonight I searched Kickstarter for ZineQuest. I quickly realized there were many more zines waiting to launch. So then I did a search for dice, and the first to catch my eyes was the Unleashed Arcana RPG Dice & DCC Sets along with D18s & D22s Kickstarter by Impact! Miniatures.

Again, I don't need more dice but I will be getting more dice.

Not Really a Missed Opportunity to Grab a Book I Wanted....

Not Really a Missed Opportunity to Grab a Book I Wanted....
I know this is late in the day and truth be told it's a bit later than I would like it to be, but I had to do a bit of travelling and some of the logistics took longer than expected.

Today started out with a bunch of promise and I was really hoping to be able to post pics of one of a new acquisition for my RPG collection: a 1st Printing of Deities & Demigods. Someone in my gaming group gave me a head's up that there was a decent copy in Denton, TX and although I had to wait a painful week before I'd be driving by Denton, today was the day.

The good news is that they had three copies of the Deities & Demigods book, but they were from the 2nd/3rd printing. Now I am not 100% sure if this checks out (I'm sure someone here will set me straight if I'm wrong), but it has been explained to me that the 1st printing had the Cthulhu mythos in it, with no "Thanks Chaosium" statement in it. The 2nd printing did have a thanks statement and the 3rd just removed the Cthulhu mythos altogether.

I think that's well documented enough, but what I heard, and could be 110% bullshit, is that the 2nd and 3rd printings are really the same print run. Somewhere along the line of the second printing they basically stopped the presses and inserted (however that happens) the new whatever-it-was-they used (plates?) and started the presses up again. It was all one print run, just broken up what was actually printed and shipped.

Anyway, this store had two of the 2nd edition(?) and one 3rd. One looked pretty good, but they actually penciled in the price on the front leaf page. WTF, who does that? I get it in some rinky-dink mom & pop booth at an antique mall, but a bookstore with a no-shit "rare book" section that's not only locked but you need a fricken escort? The other one had a huge ugly ownership label badly glued to the inside cover. The real problem was that they wanted $170 each for what was at best a Very Fine (and I doubt they'd actually make that grade) copy.

That was way overpriced for what they had, enough that I wasn't even willing to bother to see if they'd come down. IIRC that value was more than a Near Mint copy.

I did end up finding a Endless Quest D&D book I didn't have and a couple Blu-Ray/4K movies, but the hunt for a 1st printing Deities & Demigods continues on for another day.....
