Talking Crit LiveStream Special Guests for the Month of August - Holy Crap! What a Lineup!

Let me state this right now - the Talking Crit Livestream on Wednesday Nights usually doesn't have a guest lined up more than a week in advance. As of 10 minutes ago, we actually have special guests lined up for the next four weeks, and its an impressive lineup :)

This Wednesday, August 10th at 8 PM Eastern we have none other than Douglas Cole of Gaming Ballistic. Doug has turned Kickstarter into an art and is the man you'd likely want to confer with before launching your first project. Doug's current Kickstarter, Old-School Solo Adventures for OSE funded in an hour.

Next Wednesday, August 17th at 8 PM Eastern Bad Mike and I will be joined by Don Semora of Wizard Tower Games. Don will be launching the D20 Delving Kickstarter at the end of this week, which includes voice-over and editing by none other than Tim Kask.

The following Wednesday, August 24th at 8 PM Eastern, we will be joined by Ben Burns of New Big Comet Games. Ben will be launching a Kickstarter later this week and is the winner of the 2022 Three Castles Award for Game Design (actually, he's won it multiple times).

The last Wednesday of the month, August 31st at 8 PM Eastern, will feature Bill and Ben Barsh of Pacesetter Games & Simulations. Pacesetter has a number of titles available with the current Essential Classic Fantasy RPG Collection at Humble Bundle.

Edit:

The first Wednesday of next month, September 7th at 8 PM Eastern, will feature Thom Wilson of Shire Con. Thom also writes old-school gaming material, an old-school zine, has a number of Kickstarter under his belt, and donates work he's written for the NTRPG Con.

Damn! I'm still impressed ;)

Bad Mike & I had Griff Morgan from the Secrets of Blackmoor Documentary as a Special Guest on the Talking Crit LiveStream

I don't normally post links to The Tavern's Youtube Channel as the very subject of a post, but I'm making an exception tonight.

I'm going to highly recommend watching tonight's Talking Crit LiveStream with special guest Griffith Morgan. The "behind the scenes" and "behind the camera" stories relating to the Secrets of Blackmoor Documentary were fun to hear for the first time, and I learned new pieces of the convoluted history of D&D and RPGs in general.

Griff is an amazingly entertaining and knowledgeable guest to have on the livestream, and certainly someone Mike & I will have on again.

Here's the link to the Secrets of Blackmoor website, where you can find the documentary, Tonisborg, and more.

The Newest TSR - Talking Crit Special with Bad Mike & Tenkar

Earlier tonight Bad Mike and myself recorded our weekly Talking Crit YouTube episode. This week's episode was focused on the latest iteration of TSR, which has certainly been making waves and news in the past week or so.

We knocked on nearly 50 live viewers in our audience at one point, and actually did show prep and used visuals ;)

I'll be adding a follow up post later this week to supply other bloggers, YouTubers and such with the resources Mike and I used for tonight's episode, including many screen-caps that did not make it on the air (once identifiers have been removed where necessary). I expect this will be up Friday. Feel free to use.

Without further ado, tonight's special episode:

Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea 3rd Edition is Coming in June to Kickstarter (The Talking Crit Livestream)

Neither Bad Mike nor myself were informed of any of the following in advance. When Jeff announced that Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea's 3rd edition was not only currently in the works but likely Kickstarting in early June, we were as surprised as our Talking Crit live audience.

I did, however, quickly open up Pages on my desktop and took a few quick notes. Further details are, needless to say, in the Livestream.

Here's the summary I was able to make:

ASSH to likely be renamed Hyperborea. Simpler name. Easier branding. Tastes great. Less filling ;)

The new edition will be split into 2 core books.

There will be a new cover and new interior art, including full-color plates. A number of artists were mentioned. Val Semeiks & Del Tiegler were two names I recall, but there were many others.

There will be 26 new class illustrations - 4 core classes and 22 subclasses.

New chapter frames/art

The goal is an early June Kickstarter, but this is subject to change.

1st level adventure by David Prada (add on available on the Kickstarter)

Future projects:

2 other adventures - one written by Johnathan Bingham and the other by Ben Ball , who also wrote Beneath the Comet)

Again, further details are in the video below. Jeff also spoke about Castle Zagyg (and working with Gary Gygax), how AS&SH came to be, heavy metal, Conan, H.P. Lovecraft, and more.

The Talking Crit Livestream is every Wednesday Night at 8 PM Eastern.

Holy Crap! There was a Collectable Live Action Hygiene RolePlay Game at GenCon 2001

Sometimes a post just writes itself. THIS is one of those times :)

I received an email from a listener/viewer of the Talking Crit Cast (VidCast / PodCast). Actually, Glen and I did a follow up last night on Dungeons, Dragons & Discourse (VidCast / Podcast) After listening to either Bad Mike and I or Glen and I broach the topic of "gamer funk", he sent me the following pics of, as he put it:

"something I picked up at GenCon 2001. They had lots of these laying around in common areas. It’s obvious that the gamer hygiene issue is not small is someone felt the need to make these."
If any others happen to have an original copy of the above, I'm sure Bad Mike would love the donation for the NTRPG Con Midnight Auction.

A HUGE tip of the hat to Taverner JW for the above. You made my weekend as only a Taverner can ;)

Open Call for Topics for Bad Mike & Tenkar to Talk Crit about

Mike & I are digging in and getting ready to do our Talking Crit Live on Wednesday Nights @ 8 PM Eastern, afterwards the audio will get uploaded to the Tavern Chat Podcast.

Our usual "go-to", WotC doing something stupid, was fine when we were doing Talking Crit once or twice a month, but we can't rely on WotC fucking up often enough for us to Talk Crit on a weekly basis - so we are putting our crit talking into your hands.

While we plan on doing an episode on some of the bigger Funded & Failed Kickstarter Creators (a list that is sadly, far too long) we need more and varied topics, and that where you come in.

What do you want us to talk about? Some sample ideas are:

  • The best, and worst, of each of the D&D / AD&D editions
  • The best, and worst, of the early RPGs (pre-1980)
  • The Gygax Memorial Fund - an overview
Comment below, because we want to hear from you!

You can watch Talking Crit live via Facebook or YouTube each Wednesday Night @ 8PM Eastern, but if you want to comment during the podcast and be sure we get a chance to read it, we recommend you watch via YouTube, as the Facebook commenting is iffy.

The link to The Tavern's YouTube Channel is YouTube.com/ErikTenkar

You can watch the last two episodes of Talking Crit at the above link.

Premiere Episode of the Talking Crit Podcast with Bad Mike & Tenkar - Special Guest Greg Gillespie (Barrowmaze)

Last night we recorded the premiere episode of the Talking Crit Podcast. Sure, Mike & I have recorded some Talking Crits on my Tavern Chat Podcast, but now we are spinning it off as it's own weekly podcast.

Greg Gillespie joined us and we had a blast. Pour yourself a drink, pull your chair up to the bar and join us as we all Talk Crit about gaming :)
