Kickstarter - DCC Dying Earth

A DCC RPG boxed set, officially licensed by the estate of Jack Vance. Adventure with IOUN Stones and The Excellent Prismatic Spray!

I have to admit, I've never read the work of Jack Vance. I do own a Dying Earth RPG from a number of years ago, but never read it through. I am, some might say, a poor reader of the Appendix N collection.

Jack Vance's work is universally seen as one of the inspirations of the unwritten setting for D&D, where much of the magic system finds its roots. It is, after all, referred to as Vancian Magic.

I back all of the DCC RPG Kickstarter Settings, because even if I don't run the DCC RPG, the inspiration and quality of writing of its adventures are simply second to none. Heck, I've run DCC RPG adventures for the Swords & Wizardry RPG, converting the adventures on the fly.

The DCC Dying Earth Kickstarter can be backed in PDF or Print plus PDF versions. PDF starts at 25 for the boxed set in PDF, 50 for the boxed set plus 6 adventures in PDF, 50 for the boxed set in Print plus PDF, and 110 for the boxed set, and 6 adventures in print plus PDF. Phew. I'm in at 110 :)

The Dying Earth is a fictional future set in the distant twilight of the earth, as the dim red sun sheds its last life. At the end of the world, magic is indistinguishable from technology. Bickering magicians squabble over supernatural treasures, their minds filled to bursting with as many complex magical formulations as they can memorize, and they employ the services of strange creatures to best their rivals.

What’s In the Boxed Set?

The boxed set contains three books, a map, and more.

Player's Libram: Provides information for players and judges on the setting and on creating new characters, including four new classes for DCC RPG: the magician, vat-thing, wayfarer, and witch. Plus habiliments of obvious efficacy for the discerning adventurer, thaumaturgical curios, rules for grudge tokens, and a comprehensive survey of all the aeons: notable events, personages, and places.

The Primer of Practical Magic: Details the history and use of magic in the Twenty-first Aeon and includes new rules for spell creation along with 35 new spells, 14 new curses, and extensive rules for magical campaigns: objurgations, manse-building, magical associations, equipoise and exactitudes, sandestins, demonic corruption, and more.

The Intimate Anatomy of Several Creatures and Personages of the Twenty-first Aeon: Presents new creatures, patrons, and magical instruments for use in campaigns set in the Dying Earth setting, including four new patrons and 12 new patron spells; talismans, amulets, and instruments, both minor and major; a codex of three dozen creatures monstrous and mundane; and many appendices articulating the details that make the Dying Earth so special: games of chance, provisions and viands, and more.

Plus there are six new adventure modules. Pledge now to receive copies with Kickstarter-exclusive foil title printing at a special early supporter discount!

Kickstarter - Book of Lost Lore & Book of Lost Beasts (OSR)

Two books with optional rules, character classes and races, magic, and monsters for old-school tabletop fantasy role-playing games.

I'm a big fan of BRW Games / AKA Joe Bloch / AKA The Greyhawk Grognard. Joe has been putting out quality OSR releases for years, not the least of which is his Adventures Dark and Deep, a what-if AD&D 2e retro-clone. Seriously good stuff.

Joe's latest project is a pair of books: Book of Lost Lore & Book of Lost Beasts.

Book of Lost Lore looks to be Joe's version of AD&Dc 1e's Unearthed Arcana. Book of Lost Beasts sounds like a Monster Manual II. Good stuff.

The idea of these two new books is to give people who are already happy with their 1st Edition, C&C, S&W, LL, or similar games to be able to pick and choose from a wide variety of options and plug them in to their existing game as they want. There are new classes like the bard, jester, skald, blackguard, savant, mystic, and mountebank. Tons of new spells and magic items. An alternative combat system, and two alternative treasure systems. A skill system that's amazingly versatile and so much better than "Non-Weapon Proficiencies", and a system for social encounters. Rules for weather and much, much more. Everything is modular, so you can pick and choose which elements you want to include in your game.

If this sounds familiar, the very first RPG book I did nine years ago was A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore, which had a lot of the "new stuff" that is now included in my game Adventures Dark and Deep; new classes, races, spells, etc. All of that was based on Gary Gygax's announced plans for his own expansion of AD&D in the mid-1980's. But over the years Adventures Dark and Deep has grown beyond the original scope, much more material has been added in various other places, errata have been made, and I've gotten a much better feel for what folks think will be useful. These new books have all that and more.

My intention is to include enough brand-new material to make it worthwhile for people who already have the original book to add these to their collection; each of the two books is as long as the original was, so we're literally talking double the amount of stuff in the original. But it's also intended to be incredibly useful and valuable to people who have never heard of Adventures Dark and Deep, and just want to have a bunch of alternatives at their fingertips to add to their old-school fantasy games.

LaNasa - Playing with the OSR Since at Least October, 2020

For those that think the current TSR drama is something new, I picked this gem from The Tavern vaults (original post here from October 17th, 2020)

Notice that LaNasa never answers the question about whether or not the museum is a Not-For-Profit. He does say that the donation idea is a "very good idea".

Very good idea,Anyone can pay money to game anywhere and everyone does to some extent. The whole purpose here is to allow DMS to make money for their skills.Conventions pay nothing and at most gives out free rooms an snacks. We are different and secondly we are the original TSR dungeon hobby shop location The only one in the whole world. To game in Gary’s very office is a bucket list item to some. But if you can’t afford it like old Tenkar you might want to befriend a old TSR employee so you can game free !

He lets the reader draw their own conclusions, much like he's doing with TSR right now. He throws out just enough that the reader unwittingly fills in the blanks.

Then, he accuses me of editing his comment.

I just had the Tenkar edit my response what a joke he is. I said if you can’t afford gaming at the DHS like Tenkar obviously can’t . You might want to make a TSR employee as friend to get you into the game for free!!

Blogger does not give that option to site owners, but I could delete his comments. Obviously, I did neither. But the accusation is important along with the mocking of yours truly because it's simply a distraction from the question being asked: Is the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum a not-for-profit?

I ask the question yet again. His response is pure classic LaNasa (as we've recently seen on social media as TSR and/or Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum):

It’s ok Tenkar keep throwing stones. It really shows how jealous you really are it’s ok keep it up very becoming of you. Do you know how many people can’t stand to listen to you anymore.Your ship is sinking and I understand now it’s you screaming for help.

Avoidance. Distraction. Insults. But never answers. It's literally LaNasa's Method of Operation. I'm not making it up. Ignore the insults, the labels, and the dismissiveness he has shown to the gaming community over the past two weeks and look for what's missing. Answers. Simply Answers. Justin has none, so he throws up some flack to rile people up and fight amongst themselves and they forget what they were there for initially.

Answers. Simply. Answers.

The Emperor has no clothes. That is the simple answer.

The arguing back on forth on whether or not TSR is toxic is a distraction from the simple fact that TSR has nothing to offer but rebranded Dollar Tree Dice, empty promises, and abandoned TMs

Solicitation of Ideas for my Next PC Sheet/Booklet

Solicitation of Ideas for my Next PC Sheet/Booklet

[I had a topic for today that was, well topical, but it occurred to me that by opening my mouth...no matter what I write.....I'm just wrong. Having been recently threatened with violence by a noted persona in this industry (and cohorts) for advocating a position of non-violence with regards to......does it fucking matter? I'm (now) just not willing to engage with extremists regardless of their position, which is hella ironic. I had the post 50% typed out, but nope.]

Unless this is your first time reading my drivel here at the Tavern you'll know I was a big fan of HackMaster 4th Edition, which is a rather "crunchy" game. Even in less crunchy games I am a huge fan of a rather detailed character sheet, so much that I usually have to make my own PC sheets because invariably the ones available don't have enough detail.

OSE Sheet Mod
Modified OSE Sheet Front

Now lately I've been using a modified Old School Essentials PC Sheet. I got permission to share the modified sheet (which you can find here) as long as attached my name to it. Now I've been using that sheet for a year now and while it works pretty good for my needs......it isn't working as well as I want.

What I want is a bit overkill for the GM, but a bit closer to the old HackMaster Character Booklets. Since almost all of my gaming is a variation of B/X or maybe 1st Edition AD&D I'm thinking if I design it right I could conceivably make myself...and this would be "all me" even if I ended up sharing the thing for others to use, a PC sheet to end PC sheets....as it were. OK, that's a bit much because if you've seen the 21 page HackMaster Character Booklet I don't think I need a page showing where my ion stones are and a map of the traps for my personal stronghold, but my Last Will and Testament.....maybe.

Now I'm just in the early phase of this "personal project", which is mostly the "big picture" type idea stuff. Normally I'd be open to a good old-fashioned brainstorming session, but since I've been kicking the idea around for a while so some basic design elements have already been figured out:

  • Booklet format (as opposed to loose sheets)
  • Roughly A5 or Digest Sized
  • Softcover......well has an actual cover
  • Available as a PDF with printed hardcopy

OSE Sheet Mod
Modified OSE Sheet Back

I have a PC Sheet I made for the current version of HackMaster that is a bit of a booklet and made for tablet use, but prints out well. There is one PDF error on the wounds section I never did fix, but since I haven't received a single comment/complaint in the 8 years it's been available....yeah not a priority.

Now I'm fully cognizant that could just take my OSE sheet and turn it into a booklet format, which is probably what I'll do in the short term. As things change I can just re-write the contents from one page in the booklet to another and then I'll have basically a documentation of changes as the PC advances in levels.

I'm thinking though that I might make some aspects a bit generic and allow the user (me!) to enter the details in the PDF for printing. Things like not having the stats listed......then I can enter the stats used in the order they are given for the game system being used. Oh, you use an ascending AC....this sheet can deal with that as well.

As much as I'd like to add a spellbook, the fact that Id have to ass spells as I went along might be a bit much, but a spell planner seems doable.

I have to thank you, dear reader, for making it to this point of the post because you've probably been thinking, "That's great Face, but why the F**k should I give a rat's ass about your PC Sheet booklet?" Well, first off....do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Second, while I'm wanting to do this for my own benefit, I'm not above sharing (ie. I will be putting it up PWYW on DTRPG). Thirdly, there's a greater than 0% chance that one of you has a great idea that I'd be kind of PO'd that I didn't come up with myself, much less include.

So if you have any ideas, not that I'm definitely going to use, but will definitely consider, please share them. Here as a comment is preferred in case anyone else wants to do the same, or in case it gives someone else a good idea as well. Alternatively just shoot me an gmail (FrugalGM).

Latest TSR / Justin LaNasa Screenshot Dump Post & More

Ah, you just gotta love Justin LaNasa. When he isn't encouraging female employees to wrestle in grits, he's mocking gamers - the very community he wants to fleece. Justin has decided it's best to antagonize. Similar to Ken "Whit" Whitman, he thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Like Ken, he thinks he can intimidate his way to success. But then he shows traits similar to Zak Smith and blocks anyone on social media that dares to question him. Hell, he even shows shades of Gareth Skarka, being addicted to Twitter. LaNasa has defined himself as the cartoon villain of the OSR, if not tabletop gaming in general. No easy feat, as we already have had our Bob Jr. incident. Oh wait, there's a bit of Bob Jr in LaNasa too because as I'll show below, Justin MIGHT be a bit racist. Maybe. Just don't hold it against him.

Below you will find screenshots that show Justin LaNasa, the newest version of TSR, as well as the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum, in their own words. Initial screenshots will be on this page, later ones will be linked via DropBox (as this page will get slow to upload if I drop them all here). If I include private conversations, the parties other than the ones listed above have given me explicit permission to share. Additionally, there will be links to videos and articles on the above subjects from both sides of the argument as I come across them. I offer this to bloggers, podcasters, vid-casters, and news organizations to use as they see fit. A mention or link back is appreciated but not necessary.

This page is a living resource. When it initially goes live, it will be, by necessity, incomplete. Screenshots and links will be added as found. Screenshots and links can be sent to tenkarstavernAT that gmail thing.

Note: This is literally being updated right now. Links and Videos are still being added, and likely will be completed within the next few hours - until there are more - Tenkar 6/26/21 2232 EDT

If I Had to Choose Between Luke Gygax and the Latest TSR...

I'd choose Luke. No hesitation. No question.

I'd say I'm sad to see TSR go down in flames, but this isn't the TSR of old risen from the grave. It's a carpetbagger tugging on the heartstrings of nostalgic gamers, seeking to pick their pockets - or worse - roll them in a dark alley and leave them naked, bereft of all valuables.

This TSR is built off of deceit. Not just from how they jacked the TSR logo, but their use of imagery copyrighted by WotC to advertise their unwritten projects and their undated convention.

I stand with Luke.

I'll get that document and screenshot dump out later today, so others can do their own due diligence of this TSR.

Deal of the Day - Midlands Low Magic Sandbox Setting

Sometimes all you want out of a setting is useability. Midlands is that and more. Normally 10 bucks in PDF, until tomorrow morning, Midlands Low Magic Sandbox Setting is a mere 5 bucks. (a huge thanks to a Tavern Regular for the heads up)

But what do you get? A setting, tools, and more!

The Midlands PDF (original version softcover/hardcover available via Lulu) is 365 pages of low magic, low prep, customisable sandbox, in a “points of light” medieval fantasy realm. The setting is written for the Low Fantasy Gaming RPG system, a d20 variant under the OGL, but is easily adapted to any fantasy RPG.

The Midlands is half setting, half DIY toolkit (per the Contents in the preview); filled with tables and tools to assist the GM to run an improvised sandbox, including fifty Adventure Frameworks to sprinkle around the region (mini adventures with enough meat to kickstart an adventure, but enough flexibility to expand/adapt to player choices).

The Midlands' main themes include:

Grim Cities - Humanity shelters behind six isolated, walled cities, struggling for opportunity.

Deadly Outlands - One hundred leagues of trackless wilderness, plagued by skorn, thuels, & monstrous beasts.

Dangerous Magic - Sorcery was not meant for mortals; magic is rare, dark, & inherently dangerous.

Silent Gods - Deities are ineffably distant; offering no miracles, nor intervening in the world in any obvious way.

Ancient Mysteries - Despite the dangers, the wilds beckon with crumbling ruins, lost treasures, & forgotten secrets.

Free Downloads - High resolution images of the isometric Region Map, Six City Maps, 1st level Pregens, Illustrated Character Sheets & GM Screen Inserts are available for free download via the Low Fantasy Gaming RPG site.

Hex Map - As of Feb 2019, a top down colour Midlands Hex Map (with and without labels) is separately available for $5 via DTRPG.

Open Game Content - For those interested in publishing related materials, the vast majority of the Midlands is designated Open Game Content under the OGL.

Kickstarter - A Discordance with Dzyvatz (DCC RPG)

I love it when I have the PDF in hand when I post about a current Kickstarter. I'll give A Discordance with Dzyvatz a proper review this weekend. I've given it a quick perusal and it looks fun as hell.

Obviously, it's already written and laid out, so there should be little if delay in delivery.

A Discordance with Dzyvatz is 8 bucks in PDF, 20 for print plus PDF.

The Black Root of Abysmal Domination, sent to the material plane to beguile all humankind by Dzyvatz, a demon with a thirst for power and followers. His initial attempt was foiled, but the power of the root perseveres. Now a band of adventurers must destroy the root before it sews chaos across the land. This will be no easy task—the root must be returned to the domain of Dzyvatz, the depths of the Abyss!

A Discordance with Dzyvatz can be run as a standalone, level 5 DCC-compatible adventure or as a follow-up to The Tainted Forest Near Thorum in Crawl Fanzine #4.

The adventure is written by Yves LaRochelle, the author of The Tainted Forest Near Thorum and creator of the Gnome class from Crawl! Fanzine #6. This 40-page adventure has been given the Purple Pirate Games treatment and is packed full of original art on every page. It's simply beautiful. It features 6 hand-drawn maps, new monsters, new magic items, a new DCC character sheet, and printable status tokens for Abysmal Evolutions (found in the adventure).

The book will be of the same quality as our previous offering, Secrets of the World Harvesters, saddle-stitched and printed locally on 8 1/2 x 11 premium silk paper. I'll personally pick up the books, so there's no wait.

The Newest TSR - Talking Crit Special with Bad Mike & Tenkar

Earlier tonight Bad Mike and myself recorded our weekly Talking Crit YouTube episode. This week's episode was focused on the latest iteration of TSR, which has certainly been making waves and news in the past week or so.

We knocked on nearly 50 live viewers in our audience at one point, and actually did show prep and used visuals ;)

I'll be adding a follow up post later this week to supply other bloggers, YouTubers and such with the resources Mike and I used for tonight's episode, including many screen-caps that did not make it on the air (once identifiers have been removed where necessary). I expect this will be up Friday. Feel free to use.

Without further ado, tonight's special episode:

Kickstarter - Cha'alt After Dark (OSR)

To my surprise, it looks like Venger is going back to his OSR roots. Not O5R, but truly OSR.

I've said it before and it bears saying again. In my honest option, Venger was best when he first hit the scene, before he tried to rely upon shock or create his own scifi system. It wasn't the soft porn references I found offensive, it was O5R and trying to bring the shock level up to 12.

V has an amazing ability to write useable adventures and his presentation is often second to none. Sadly, some of his attempts at attention gaining actually distracted from him gaining traction. Hopefully, Cha'alt After Dark is a return to Venger's early days, just with more sleaze. I suspect it is.

Normally, Cha'alt adventures are on the edge of "family-friendly".  Ok, maybe over the edge.  Cha'alt After Dark, on the other hand, is way off the map.  We're into darker and sleazier territory now, hoss.

Buy-in is 5 bucks for the PDF or 15 bucks if you want all of the Cha'alt releases in PDF thus far. There are also hardcover options.

For 5 bucks, it's a no-brainer.

Erik is Prophetic with Regards to Folks not Getting Trademarks

Erik is Prophetic with Regards to Folks not Getting Trademarks
First off, a little background about me: I've got degrees in Library Science, Information Systems Mgmt, Business Management, and HR Management (the last one doesn't have much bearing here, but if I'm listing my education....). I've run a few small companies and have done some small business consulting....enjoyed it actually, but I really dislike trying to "drum up business" so I don't do it much anymore.

Between my education and experience I've learned a lot about forming a company, from a legal compliance aspect, and trademarks/copywrite.

Yeah....Erik called it yesterday, "TSR Trademark Assigned June 16th - Let the Flurry of Pointless Announcements Begin!"

For some reason I was actually surprised when I go this off of Google news:

You'd think ComicBook would get it

Now I read the article and wow, just wow. Now I do realize that actual writers/journalists, unlike bloggers, don't write the titles to their articles, BUT if you read the article (just click the pic above), you might come to the same conclusion as I have that the title accurately depicts the contents of the article.

I'm not hating on Jr. or TSR, but this is clearly NOT a "relaunch" of an old company. This is a brand-fricken-new-company with no legal ties to the old company, despite the fact that there are personal ties to the old company and whatnot. A lot of people just don't understand the difference.

The Distinguished Gentleman

I'll try to explain, but first off....have you seen "The Distinguished Gentleman" with Eddie Murphy? The gist of the film is that Eddie' character, Thomas Jefferson Johnson, is a con man and when he learns that his state's Congressman, Jefferson Johnson, has passed away before an election he runs in his place. By just using his middle and last name, the con man gets elected as a Congressman.

I'm not saying that the new TSR or Jr. are con-men, but there is a bit of an analogy. In a real and legal sense companies are basically people. When the old TSR became WotC and then became Hasbro it was more like a name change for a "regular person". Now TSR didn't "die" like Jefferson Johnson did in the movie, but basically its name did. You see TSR and WotC might now be known as Hasbro but in a legal sense they still kept a hold on to their old names. Think of it maybe like someone who goes by one name in High School, another in College, and then another (maybe they got married or something) after college, but when they go "back home"....like maybe a High School reunion, they get called by the old name everyone from back then knows them as. With this analogy, the old TSR that is now Hasbro legally let the old name (Trademarks) "die" so they simply can't go "back home" and let people call them that old name....because somebody else is using it.

Trademarks are basically just fancy names representing a legal entity. When you reserve a trademark, it has to be designated for a specific audience, AND you have to make sure that you protect that name. Simply paying to register one isn't enough. You know how people tend to use Kleenex to describe any facial tissue? Yeah, "we" can do that, but if a company making facial tissues calls their product Kleenex they are getting sued to oblivion because the actual Kleenex has to defend their trademark. Evidently Hasbro, or more than likely Hasbro's legal compliance team, let the various TSR trademarks "die" by not renewing them. Since the legal entity that was TSR became Hasbro and Hasbro still makes RPGs, as long as they maintained (and was willing to defend) the old trademark, it was theirs.

Once they didn't care, those trademarks were up for grabs. Literally that's all this is...a name. No intellectual, or real, property goes with the name. I've seen folks think that just because you now have an older company's legal name/trademarks you have X,Y, or Z from the old company.

Nope.....all you have is a name. In the movie Thomas Jefferson Johnson didn't just "get" all of Congressman Johnsons "stuff" because he now was using the same name. He did get a lot of "stuff", but only because the Congressman's widow gave it all away. Hasbro isn't giving up anything other than some old trademarks.

I wish TSR all the best and I hope the new company works out well for them, but this is not a "re-launch" of an old brand, but a new company using an old name. Don't expect to be getting new reprints of old TSR product or anything......

.......maybe I should have used Face Off for my analogy?

TSR Trademark Assigned June 16th - Let the Flurry of Pointless Announcements Begin!

Let's see. We want to premiere a new convention and use the nostalgia attached to our newly registered as of June 16th Trademark.

I know. We'll call it TSR Con 2022!

But what makes us special? I know! We'll have it at Horticultural Hall in Lake Geneva! Instant super nostalgia! We'll get signups without even announcing a schedule.

Sure, its max capacity is 160 peeps, but we'll say it's "The Nation's Premier Wargame Convention" because surely there aren't any others that are bigger and have history, right? I mean, it's not like there's a list of wargaming conventions available to check against. Who needs a proven track history to make these statements when we have "nostalgia!"

When is it you ask? Just say "2022". It's a big year. We'll figure out the details later but we need to build the hype now!

If only we could secure the TM for Blackmoor in time for the convention. That would be icing on the cake.

What, we already filed for it? Awesome! Let the Arneson Estate know we will give them favorable licensing terms.

Just wait for the press release at PR.com! It will be amazing with run-on sentences that will make every German proud!

Just like our TSR Games is Back press release. Just don't take it too seriously, because WotC might get offended...

Hey, do we get to sue the "old" "New TSR" for using our TM? What about WotC using our TMs on their DTRPG PDFs and PODs from the "original" TSR era? Now that we've redrawn all of the classic logos and have TMs pending, they're violating our trademarks, right?
