ShireCon PreCon Get it On was Tonight

Yep, Rach and I are in Falls Village, CT for ShireCon 2022. We booked a room at the Falls Village Inn, and it is a historical location with a very nice bar and restaurant - so long as you eat and drink between 5 pm and 8 pm. Seriously, possibly the best pub burger I've had, and I know my pub burgers ;)

It was fun catching up with new and old friends after dinner at the Pre-Con-Get-It-On. Right now, Rach is helping with some finishing touches on tomorrow's Swords & Wizardy Light adventure. I'm looking forward to a day of gaming, and a night of drinking ;)

Kickstarter - STL Files for 3D Printing Star Hat Miniatures

Star Hat Miniatures and Ill Gotten Games Presents: STL Files for 3D Printing Dungeon Delvers, Ducks, Turtles, Trolls, Crows, and more!

I'm a HUGE fan of Darcy Perry and his Star Hat Miniatures line. With amazing details, imaginative poses, and unique creatures, his work is second to none.

Darcy's STL Files for 3D Printing Star Hat Miniatures Kickstarter may just be the offering that convinces me to purchase a 3d printer. Imagine, unlimited Tenkar miniatures! :)

STL files for 3D printing Star Hat Miniatures is a set of 3D-printable miniatures that you can print, paint, and enjoy in your tabletop games.

Hand Sculpted High-Quality Digital STL files

My name is Darcy Perry from Star Hat Miniatures and I sculpted these miniatures by hand, using traditional methods (putty, paperclips, and patience). Inspired by the classic miniatures of my youth, sculpting has been my passion for the last 6 years. Jeremy Larsen from Ill Gotten Games scanned my miniatures using a dual-camera LED scanner that rotates the model on two axes to provide high-resolution digital STLs. Your pledge is delivered as an STL file pack to print on your home 3D printer. I hope you enjoy my miniatures as much as I enjoyed making them!

Guess what? We have Darcy as tonight's Special Guest on the Talking Crit Livestream tonight at 8 PM Eastern!

Wayward Kickstarter - Far West - BACKER UPDATE - Finished Manuscript within a Month or so - So Gareth Says!

Well, Gareth has made promises before, so let me just add the following:

Sure, it's a "Backers Only Update", but after more than a decade of excuses and delays, I'm not sure how many backers actually care at the moment. Here's today's update, sans Dropbox link (I'll look over the linked material later):

Greetings, Backers --

I have some excellent news for you all.  I've spoken to my partner, Eric Trautmann, who informs me that the layout of FAR WEST will be completed within the next month or so!  We are so close to delivering the PDF!

Your incredible patience has made this all possible, and I cannot begin to thank you enough.

It occurred to me as I was preparing to send you this news that I hadn't yet sent you the complete manuscript, from beginning to end.  You'd seen bits and pieces of it, but not the whole thing.  So, without further ado, I present the following to you -- PDFs of the entire manuscript, from the Front Matter to the Open Game License that closes the rulebook.

No link for you - if a backer, look for today's update

Another piece of news for you:  As you know, our Far West society forums on the website were the victim of an attack, which corrupted several critical files, and ended up with us losing the entire forum.  Well, I have now replaced that forum with a dedicated Discord server -- and, as a thank you for your support and unbelievable patience with us, every backer of this Kickstarter is being given a lifetime membership to the Far West Society, and access to the Discord, where you can ask questions, make suggestions, and generally converse with your fellow members.  The invite is here:

No link for you. If you are a backer, look for today's update.

Society members receive special offers on Far West products, including exclusive merchandise not offered for sale to the public. The Society receives access to a private members-only Discord server, where they have direct access to the Far West Core Development Team, as well as early access to information and material before it is released via the main site.

Most importantly, however, the Far West Society has the ability to add material to the official Far West canon, and to directly influence the outcome of events within the setting. Society members can propose new characters, locations, organizations, events and more, and those proposals are discussed and collaborated upon by their fellow members. The proposals are honed to razor-sharpness by the community, and incorporated by the Core Development Team into the official setting!

We look forward to talking with you all on the official Discord!

That's all for now.  Talk to you again soon, when we sent you the final PDF of the game!

Sincerely,

Gareth-Michael Skarka

Kickstarter - Black God's Kiss RPG Box Set (OSE & 5e)

A perilous adventure unearthing the dark arcana behind Sword & Sorcery’s iconic tabletop roleplaying game.

It's rare to find a boxed set offered for an RPG, let alone an RPG setting. The Black God's Kiss is exactly that - a boxed setting (and micro game) for OSE and 5e. Color me intrigued. Also, show me as a backer, as this is the stuff I truly want to see.

59 bucks for the core boxed set, 89 bucks for the deluxe boxed set.

Black God’s Kiss is a perilous setting playable as an RPG module compatible with both 5e and Old School Essentials (OSE)—or as a standalone microgame for two players—with custom rules for Loss of Humanity, and streamlined mechanics for enduring cosmic horror in an eldritch pocket dimension.

Based on the fantasy fiction of C.L. Moore, who stands as one of the great sword & sorcery and weird tale authors of the early 20th century, the box set contains everything you need to delve into the star-lit realm of the Black God—explore forbidden ruins, encounter wretched creatures, and retrieve a weapon of dreadful power ... the Black God’s Kiss!

Undertaking an expedition in this pocket dimension will tax your body, your mind, and threaten the very nature of your soul. To survive, you must carefully make choices—managing your own humanity as a limited resource which diminishes by the hour. To succeed, you must not only confront the Black God, but the darkest recesses of your own shadow self.

Realizing I've Grown, Well at Least Changed, as a Gamer

Realizing I've Grown, Well at Least Changed, as a Gamer
Back when I was playing HackMaster 4th Edition and really trying to get to be a level 3 GM (It was a thing......and this isn't a HackMaster story/post), I was also doing HackMaster demos at game stores and trying to get interest up for some future tournaments. A common reaction when chatting players up at the store was something along the lines of, "I like HackMaster (or my group plays a mix of 1st & 2nd Edition), but my group has been playing for twenty years in my buddy's basement and none of us are interested in playing anything new/different." Even though I used to be a complete Rules As Written (RAW) single-ruleset player, well....that changed. I'd love to say that it was because I matured in some capacity, but really it was because I got the opportunity to playtest HackMaster 5th Edition.

The experience was an eye-opener for me, mostly because I wasn't involved with the early playtest, but more towards the end of the playtest development cycle.

Although I had a definite preference, I did have experience with a variety of other games, so hopefully I had some value to add to the process. There was one thing with the old in-progress rules that the Development Team were adamant about including and I was adamant was beyond effed up....as in, I will NEVER buy, much play this game if this one core mechanic is publish as-is. Lucky for me, another playtester, who agreed with my assessment, was able to vocalized exactly why that mechanic was so effed up and I think her explanation is what got that mechanic changed.

Of course if it hadn't I guess we could've house-ruled it to make sense......but remember, I was really a RAW type of guy.

Fast forward at least a decade and I don't think my home group plays that much RAW. Our GM writes a few things and likes to run the group through his new creations. Usually things are a bit more in the polished....."about to publish" stage, but not always. Once or twice we've had to roll things back 'cause the whatever-it-was didn't work out as planned, but that was a rare. I think playing some odd mix of mostly BX with some elements that are-not-but-feel-like AD&D and these "home rules" has had me come around 180*.

This surprises even me, but I'm actually looking forward to playing my 1st Psionicist in my home group, mostly because I don't have a freakin clue how Psionics work. I think I have the rules from New Big Dragon Games Unlimited Basic Psionics Handbook, but I'm not even going to read said rules until I absolutely have to. I think I've flipped through them, but I don't recall any of it. Not having a clue will be a bit of fun, at least for a while. Eventually I'll need to know how everything works, but learning as I go along feels like fun. At least more fun than just picking up an entire new ruleset would be......

Now I'm assuming that the type of gamers we have here at the Tavern are more like the type of gamer I am now than the type I used to be back then.

Bundle of Holding - Heroes Unlimited

My history with the various Palladium RPGs is a bit mixed. My first pick-up was Mechanoids - never played but full of inspirational ideas. Then Recon, which I could NEVER convince my group to play. Palladium Fantasy was huge for a while though, and we played Rifts for years. Heck, I even grabbed TMNT. Go figure, I know ;)

I think the only Palladium RPG we never tried, or at least read, back in the 80s and 90s was Heroes Unlimited.

The Heroes Unlimited Starter Collection is 14.95. The Bonus Collection is approximately 30 bucks as I type this.

Humble Bundle - Doctor Who RPG (Cubicle 7)

I was a passing fan of Doctor Who in my teen years and used to watch the show on PBS over summers spent in the Poconos. As an adult, I've observed from afar, but fans of Doctor Who are, quite often I have found, HUGE fans of Doctor Who and the lore attached to it.

The Doctor Who RPG Bundle from Humble Bundle appears, to my untrained eyes, to cover ALL (most?) of the seasons of the series, including the ones I watched in my younger days. 18 bucks get you 28 titles. I may have to start binge-watching the Good Doctor...

Time Lords across all time and space, rejoice! The Doctor Who RPG bundle by Cubicle 7 is here for adventurers of all ages. Grab two six-sided dice and you’ll be traveling to the corners of the universe, ancient Rome, the far future, and any point between. With the Doctor Who Roleplaying Game Rulebook (Twelfth Doctor Edition) you’ll get the foundation for your travels, and The Time Traveler’s Companion will help you round out your crew. With material like The Tenth Doctor Sourcebook and dozens more books, you’ll have incredible references to relive some of your favorite Doctor Who stories—all while supporting BBC Children in Need.

Deal of the Day - Old School Solo (OSE)

Matt Jackson, old-school mapper extraordinaire, has been talking up solo gaming using old-school and/or simple RPG rules for months now. With Old School Solo, priced at 1.98 until tomorrow at 11 AM Eastern, I think I will take the plunge.

This solo roleplaying supplement is written specifically to feel like natural OSR RPG rules. If you are comfortable with rolling to see if you encounter a wandering monster and then rolling to see what it is, then you can work these rules!

Most of the rules in this add-on rulebook condense down into just four tables, the rest of the content is all supporting content to help you get the most out of solo roleplaying.

Topics covered include:

  • Closed Questions
  • Best/Worst Scenarios
  • Fortunately/Unfortunately
  • The Oracle
  • Open Questions
  • Specialist Tools
  • Three Things
  • Plot Twists
  • Time
  • Partys and NPCs
  • Chaos Dice
  • World-Building
  • Saving Throws and Hit Points

Kickstarter - Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane

The original Scandinavian tabletop RPG reimagined 40 years after its original launch – now also in English.

I had never heard of Drakar och Demoner until a few years ago when I heard rumors of an English translation in the works. Everything I heard at the time made it sound like a hugely fun setting and RPG. Now is the time of truth I guess, with the Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane RPG coming in at $37 USD for the Core Boxed Set with PDFs. Yep, at that price, backing it was a no-brainer. Its a gamble I'm willing to take.

If You Were the Victim of a Data Breach, and the Company Never Told You, Would You be Upset?

Fact: TSR Games/DHSM sent, apparently unsolicited, via email, billing, and Credit Card information, that was NOT encrypted, to Wizard Tower Games/Don Semora.

Fact: Don Semora went public with the apparent improper receiving of said data, after compiling a bunch of screenshots, files, emails, and such under subpoena from WotC.

Fact: Don Semora offered to confirm with those that were potentially at risk of having their data improperly shared if their information was part of an apparent "data leak."

Upon Information and Belief, I DO NOT believe that said data was requested by Don Semora/WTG. Don Semora has told me directly that he did not request said data, and DHSM/TSR Games has only stated that CC was not shared with Don Semora/WTG.

Fact: TSR Games/DHSM claims that CC information was not shared with WTG/Don Semora

Upon Information and Belief, Don Semora has told me that nearly a dozen have contacted him to confirm they are on the data breach and that he has their CC or Paypal information, along with billing address, etc.

Fact: I have a "straw buyer" that has yet to receive the items ordered back in February of 2022. I personally confirmed with Don Semora that their information was included in the unsolicited sharing of data. The information included their method of payment, along with account identifiers.

Everyone here is an adult. I would recommend that you use your common sense in ensuring that your billing information is not misused.

Bundle of Holding - True20 RPG

When I started my slow crawl back into RPGs, a few years into the new century, I stumbled across the True20 RPG. Based on the 3.0 SRD, but taking it in a different direction, it was the game I dreamed of playing at the time. Not because the rules were amazing (they were certainly good), but because the setting material got my imagination going strong. It made me want to create, and that is no small thing.

For the next 12 days or so, True20 is available on Bundle of Holding. 7.95 gets you the core material and then some.

I may need to snag this myself.

Adventurer! This all-new True20 Bundle presents True20, the streamlined d20-based tabletop roleplaying game from Green Ronin Publishing. Using modifications derived from the First Editions of Green Ronin's Mutants & Masterminds (2002) and Blue Rose (2005), True20 introduces new character, combat, and experience systems that simplify the d20 System that powers Dungeons & Dragons 3.x and Pathfinder. See why True20 holds respect as one of the most interesting variants to emerge from the d20 System boom.

For just US$7.95 you get all three titles in our Core Collection (retail value $40) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete True20 Revised Corebook from 2008, its Campaign Planner, and the True20 Bestiary.

True Sorcery supplement for True TwentyAnd if you pay more than the threshold price of $19.58, you'll level up and also get our entire Bonus Collection with six more supplements worth an additional $61, including all three "role book" rules expansions – the Expert's Handbook, Adept's Handbook, and Warrior's Handbook – plus Fantasy Paths, True Sorcery, and Cybernetics.

It's a me.....Jumpman!

It's a me.....Jumpman!
I'm definitely a child of the 80's like so many of us that enjoy the OSR. Sometime between when I first picked up the PHB and the time I got to play my 1st game of the Magenta Box, I had discovered the fun that was video games. At first it was seeing a friend of the family having an Atari, and if I was good getting a turn at Missile Command. Then it was the rich kid down the block owning an Intellivision, which I never got to touch.

I also didn't get to really play the Defender arcade game when the local pizza joint got it, because the big kids would hog the machine. I swear one guy could play that thing for an hour straight on one quarter.

Then in sixth grade, which is when I finally got to play in a "proper" D&D game (what I did before was very seat-of-the-pants fumbling around the rules), a small video arcade opened up over by my old school. They had a few pinball games and some iffy video games, BUT they had Donkey Kong, which I enjoyed...well kind of. I have always sucked at Donkey Kong, but it's been a special game for me.

These days I have an Xbox and plenty of cool AAA games, but I still love my old-school, quarter-eating, standup arcade machine. For a couple years now I've been collecting ROMs and I've picked up Launchbox. I've also been picking up joysticks, buttons, and basically everything else I need to create an arcade machine. Now that I have my own place I have the space and (soon) the facilities to create my arcade machine. Have you ever looked at the process for building one of those things? That's a lot of work, and I'm assuming a bunch of money for something that I might not be able to pull off.....

This last week I was screwing around of Facebook and found out about a large video game collection being auctioned off in Tulsa. There were a few non-functioning cabs and I thought maybe I could pick up one that had nothing inside of it, and was in bad shape to begin with, just to take apart and use as a template to cut out my own. Hell, I'd drive 6 hours and pay $50 to get a solid template if it saves me hundreds in wood.....and probably a couple of hours of trying to accurately measure out the plans I have. Basically I know my limitations, and "measure twice & cut once" doesn't always work for me.

Jamma IV Cab (not mine)

Anyway I discovered they had a non-working Pony IV machine and that could save me the entire process of building jack squat. It's a Jamma cab, which is a wiring standard, so all I'd need to do is get a proper connection to my computer and maybe replace the CRT with a LED TV and I'd be good to go.

Well I did win the auction and Wednesday I drove up to Tulsa to bring back my new cabs. Yes, plural......I managed to also pick up my very own Donkey Kong! There is some damage to the back edge of the sides, probably from loading it in/off of a truck (I'm sure I did some of that) and the back was replaced poorly, but it works, save the coin door. I also have the original (English language) owner's manual, and who we all call Mario is always referred to as "jumpman".

Donkey Kong Cab (This one is mine)
Sans my reflection

I was able to clean it up a bit, properly secure the back and replace the monitor's matting. I also took the effort to install aluminum angle "iron" along the top, bottom, and both sides of the back to cover up the minimal damage and protect it from further damage. I figured this was cheaper than replacing both sides and this way the machine is as close to original as I can reasonably manage.

The machine is hanging out in my kitchen until I get the space I'm going to keep it squared away. The Pony IV is in the garage until I can get to working on it (when the weather gets nicer, most likely).

......BTW, I still totally suck at Donkey Kong, but I have the opportunity to get better.

Humble Bundle - Boldly Go: A Star Trek Comics Collection

I'm finding a new love for comic books, as I can load them onto my iPad and zoom in to appreciate the art and better read the lettering. Yes, my eyes are getting old ;) It isn't only that though, it's the fact that at 55 I've run out of space for new stuff without getting rid of old stuff to make room. Digital comics take up no more space than my iPad does, for hundreds if not thousands of comics. I've been rereading The Sandman and spending countless hours in the worlds of 2000 AD/Judge Dredd recently, and it's been a blast. It looks like I'll be adding Star Trek to the list of comics I'll be reading.

18 bucks get you everything you see on this post, 54 titles in all from the Boldly Go: A Star Trek Comics Collection. You can spend less to receive less, and personally, I'm not all that excited to see Discovery titles in the batch, but maybe the included stories will make the TV series enjoyable, or at least tolerable. There look to be a number of gems in this collection, like The City on the Edge of Forever. What a classic!

DTRPG is Having a Settings Sales, and Its Left Me Scratching My Head...

It appears that two of the three titles showcased for the September Settings Sale are not actual part of the sale. This could be a simply oversight, but not a good look when there is another controversy brewing over yet another update to their publisher guidelines (I'll share that below - its worthy of a full post, and Bat in the Attic will likely have you covered in the near future;)

Brinkwood and Court of Blades are full price as you can see above and will also see if you follow the links on the sales page. This is not the first time I've seen items listed as part of a sale that weren't actually ON sale, but it is the first time I've noticed it with products they highlighted on their banner. The fact that they are placing 7 and 9 for the Hottest September System Sale: Week 1 is also leading to some head scratching, as they are currently selling at FULL price.

Note: As I was writing this, they dropped off the "Hottest" list, but are still listed as part of the sale at full price.

As promised - more later:

Bundle of Holding - DCC RPG Essentials

If you haven't played the DCC RPG yet, you probably should. The "funnel" is one of the most fun types of scenarios to run or play in. For 14.95 for the DCC RPG Essentials Bundle, you can get the core rules, Sailors on the Starless Sea (one of the best adventures for any system), another adventure, and the GM screen in PDF.

There is a second bundle for the DCC RPG if you want to continue playing the DCC RPG.

As Promised, Complete C&D Letter on Behalf of TSR/LaNasa can be Downloaded Below

As I promised in this morning video, I'm making the complete Cease & Desist letter that was sent to me earlier this month on behalf of Justin LaNasa / TSR Games available below. Feel free to watch the videos that Justin's attorney failed to actually do.

Note: Yes, it includes my full name and address. I've been doxed by those associated with nuTSR several times. The info is in the wild. I'm sure If I tried to obscure it, they would simply dox me again.

Download the PDF of the complete C&D letter here

In addition, I am attaching the "anonymouse" email that referred to the C&D, at a time when I had not publicly shared knowledge of the C&D. I'll let you guess as the the source of the "anonymouse" email.
