Kickstarter - The Valley Out of Time for S&W DCC MCC Part 5&6 FINAL!

Sometimes MORE literally is better. In this case, we are talking about more Skeeter Green. No. I've known Skeeter for years. I consider him a friend. I've also been nearly violated by Skeeter (listen to one of the livestreams where Skeeter has guested on Talking Crit and you'll probably hear the story told), so pissing off Skeeter might not be a "good thing". Thankfully, I've enjoyed the prior parts to the Valley out of Time and I'm eagerly awaiting parts 5 and 6 to wrap this fucker up. Now I'll need to find time to run them ;)

I'm backing The Valley Out of Time for S&W DCC MCC Part 5&6 FINAL! for the Swords & Wizardry flavor in Print & PDF. 18 bucks plus shipping, I think is a steal.

The Valley Out of Time is a series of 'zine-sized adventures from SGP. This valley can be placed in any ongoing campaign and is set in the "Neanderthal Period" of tech development. Huge monsters – both dinosaurs and otherwise – and devolved humanoids plague the area, and only the hardiest of adventurers will prevail! This series of adventures borrows heavily from classic dinosaur art, books, and movies; if you have ever seen a classic Frank Frazetta or Roy Krenkel painting, or read or watched The Land that Time Forgot, The Lost World, Journey to the Center of the Earth, One Million Years B.C., The Flintstones, any Ray Harryhausen film, etc., you are going to feel right at home.

All the books in the series are 5 1/2" x 8" saddle-stitch (stapled) or perfect-bound (glued) "zine size" offerings, ranging from 20 to 30 (or more!) pages. The price for the books is based off calculations for the 20-page book, so the larger books are just more content! Enjoy!

I Get to Roll Up a Psionicist

I Get to Roll Up a Psionicist

OK, this is my second go because I didn't care for the 1st one.*

I don't want to post any spoilers for my fellow player who I know sometimes reads these posts, but I'm getting the opportunity to create a new PC...read that however you want to.

I managed to talk my GM into letting me create a psionic character, which means I finally have a reason to read the Basic Psionics Handbook. The GM was a little hesitant, thinking that he will have to re-work the entire "campaign", but one of my fellow players was like, "....but do you really?"

That kind of struck a nerve with me, and not in a bad way. As a GM, I get it.....someone wants to bring in this whole other thing into your game and it's natural to think about all the stuff you need to do to accommodate, or I even dare say cater to, that player in order to make it work. As a GM I think we all default to how our campaigns are these little well-balanced masterpieces and if we introduce something new it'll wreck everything.

Clearly laughable in this particular case because these sessions aren't "masterpieces" and our GM is introducing new shit all of the time. Just an observation, not a dig. If the game wasn't fun I wouldn't be playing.

Game balance is important, but I also feel it's more important within the party. Everyone needs to feel like they contribute and get an opportunity to "do their thing" or to even shine occasionally. If I have a PC that can just go in Mind Blasting everything in sight, well that's unbalanced.....

......but after reading the rules that's not really something I'd be able to do. The rules, so far, seem pretty balanced. Nothing like what I remember from 1st Edition, not that I ever rolled up a PC with the requisite stats for those rules antyway.

Now I'm totally thinking of tweaking things to be a great supporting character. Not going to be having my moment in the middle of a dungeon combat and in many ways this PC might be boring, but I'll have fun checking out the rules.

Besides, if my PC gets too powerful I'm sure the locals will rise up and a mob will tear her apart for being a "witch".

*
I had a long-assed post about this whole Defamation suit and why I thought it was bullshit, but IANAL and if you're interested you can look that shit up yourself. I'm of the opinion that this is clearly a SLAPP suit and somebody either has a lawyer that will do anything for some more billable hours or said somebody has more money than sense because if I hire a professional to advise me I generally want to follow that advice...that I paid for.

For now though.....

Bundle of Holding - Psi-punk

FUDGE
was one of the first, free to use and able to publish to rulesets I remember finding on the internet "back in the day". It is literally the roots of the Fate RPG system

I mention this because the Psi-punk deal on Bundle of Holding is based on FUDGE. At 7.95 for 7 titles, I'll be buying this just to see the FUDGE system in action ;)

Adventurer! This new Psi-punk Quick Deal presents Psi-punk, the psionic-cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying game from Accessible Games. Based on the Fudge universal system, Psi-punk takes you to the North American Union of 2096, where ghosts, psiborgs, technomancers, and soul jackers walk among us. To compete, you'll build your ideal body, implant a few high-tech devices, sign up with a megacorp or government, and discover what it means to be more than human.

Everyone Games. This new Quick Deal ties in to Everyone Games, an online event (30 Sept - 01 Oct 2022) that promotes accessibility options for partially-sighted, blind, and otherwise disabled gamers. Psi-punk designer Jacob Wood helps coordinate Everyone Games. "Games are for absolutely everyone," says Jacob. "Not every game is designed for every person, but I believe every person should have the opportunity to find a game."

Kickstarter - Board Game D20 Delving

Ah, D20 Delving. I was a very early backer the first time around, which did not fund, due in part to the trolling of a certain individual that will not be named (no - it's not "Candyman" ;)

The Board Game D20 Delving Kickstarter is nearly funded this time around, with over two weeks to go in funding, and I'm excited. Don Semora is a good game designer and an honorable man, and I'll take that combination any day. As for releasing on target, Don has his own printing facility, so the number of things that can go wrong out of his actual control is minimized.

Did I mention Tim Kask doing voicework for it?

I'm a backer of The Board Game D20 Delving Kickstarter at $120, which included the Krampus expansion pack, but you can get the game for as little as 70 bucks for the base game.

Humble Bundle - All About Tolkien Book Bundle

With Amazon's current Middle Earth "Masterpiece" the current talk of the internet (for good or ill, I haven't watched it yet and I'm unsure if I will), Tolkien is on the minds of many.

The All About Tolkien Book Bundle on Humble Bundle is likely not what the average buyer will expect. While it does NOT contain Tolkien fiction, it does include historical and biographical books on Tolkien, fiction that included his writings, and later fiction that was influenced by Tolkien.

This expansive library features over two dozen books filled with entertaining explorations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, in-depth scholarly analysis of Tolkien’s mythology, fascinating biographies, and much more. LABYRINTH LORD second edition COMING Q1 2023

Times have changed, and so is Labyrinth Lord!

First released in 2007, Labyrinth Lord is the premier Basic/Expert compatible fantasy role-playing game. Back then "retro–clones" were a new concept, exemplified by Matt Finch's and Stewart Marshall's work on the first edition compatible game OSRIC.

We were treading new waters in pushing the limits of the Open Game License and available System Reference Documents from Wizards of the Coast. The rule of thumb at that time was to err on the side of caution to avoid publishing content that might be considered "art" rather than system.

Fast forward 15 years later, and the slew of additional games following the same path but in a less cautious manner has proven that some of the design choices made earlier are not necessary in the current state of the industry.

Coupled with being essentially out of the game publishing market for several years, it's clear that the time has come for Goblinoid Games to publish a new edition of the ever popular Labyrinth Lord game!

Labyrinth Lord, Second Edition

Game presentation will be updated to account for the new standards gamers expect. Things like experience tables, level rank titles, and other smaller changes originally made to avoid the perception of reproducing art, will all be brought to closer compatibility with the original Basic/Expert rules.

In addition, much of the rules presentation will be streamlined for easier reference at the table. This will be done while accounting for known errata.

What does the future hold?

Labyrinth Lord second edition is set for release in Q1 of 2023. Its release will be concurrent with a new solo adventure (the writing stage is currently almost finished). These products will be released directly to the public, not via any fundraising effort ahead of time.

Later, there will be a second edition of the Advanced Edition Companion, and if the public desires it, these books will be compiled to create a second edition of Advanced Labyrinth Lord. All editions will remain in print, but clearly labeled with our vendors as to which books are first or second edition.

Goblinoid Games will continue to publish additional adventures and other works regularly going forward.

I'm excited for this relaunch, and I hope many of you join me on this new adventure. Let's make the next 15 years of Labyrinth Lord even more groundbreaking than its early years.

New Crowdfunding - By Feather and Coop, a Zine for The Hero's Journey 2e (James Spahn)

It's no secret that James Spahn is virtually my brother from another mother. I just want to remind folk, as I am highlighting a new release for The Hero's Journey 2e. For those that don't know, The Hero's Journey is as close to James' ideal vision of an RPG as we'll likely ever see, and it's pretty amazing.

So what is By Feather and Coup? Well, as stated on this post's header, it's a zine for The Hero's Journey 2e.

By Feather and Coop is a small zine supplement for Barrel Rider Games' The Hero's Journey: Second Edition! It features a new character lineage (the Bantam - yes, you can play a chicken), new spells, heirlooms, and a small menagerie of creatures!

The final zine is around 25 pages, and features new art from Nicolas Giacondino!

The PDF is fully laid-out, art complete and ready to go! You'll get the PDF when you help GallantFund this item, with the option for a printed zine. The print edition of this zine will only be available from the GKG webstore. If you get the print+PDF edition, it can take up to 48 hours for your PDF to fulfill (it's a manual process on our end at this time.)

By Feather and Coup is 3.99 in PDF, 6.99 for the Print plus PDF.

Bundle of Holding - Quick Deal - KoDT Trouble 3

I'm a huge fan of the Knights of the Dinner Table series of comics, although I tend to do my reading in binges. I've recently moved most of my reading of comics to the digital world, as the iPad is easier on my aging eyes.

KoDT Trouble 3 is a collection of 10 Bundles of Trouble. It includes Volumes 21-30, which cover KoDT issues #69 through #100 (2002-2005). Not bad for 19.95

Note: Just over 2 days left as i post this

Some bedtime reading ;)

In-Game SOPs

In-Game SOPs
I was watching...something, not the salient point here...and one of the characters basically SOPs the door and it struck me as odd because it wasn't a bunch of military or police "stacking up". I'm not used to seeing this too often out in the wild...

..."too often" because I am a Veteran and in that capacity I am quite used to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs or "sop/sops"), but honestly higher-level established SOPs are usually (at least in my experience) called TTPs, or Tactics Techniques, & Procedures. I have seen unit-level SOPs and I like to think that I had some individualized SOPs....I know I do on my job now, but it took me a few minutes to think about it. I have a little black book I use to keep notes in and that's where I keep a record of my SOPs....

...well, I thought I kept a record of those SOPs. I just took a look at the book and it's filled with notes on how to do certain things for each of my main work tasks, but no actual SOPs, more like remarks on how the big boss likes specific things done...again, more like problem solving than SOPs.

My current home group kind of has some SOPs, but as far as I know they aren't written down and they were established (probably decades) before I joined the group. It's more a short-hand between the party Thief and the GM.

"You going to SOP the door?"

"Yes, but I'll let the junior thief do it and I'll follow up to check their work."

Now to me it makes a lot of sense for Thieves to naturally have a series of SOPs and maybe a party when it comes to certain things:

  • Marching Order
  • Room searching
  • Post-battle recovery
  • Night Watches
Some SOPs are clearly the product of player experience vs. player-character experience, but not necessarily in the realm of using Out Of Character knowledge. Often in pick-up or convention games I'm more than happy to take a backseat, as it were, and be the rear-guard, assuming I have an appropriate PC. When I get to do this, I make sure to tell the GM my main SOP is to regularly be looking up ahead of the group and behind the group, even if that's to my PC's detriment. If everybody ahead of me falls silently into a trap there's a good chance I'll fall in as well if I happen to be shuffling backwards during that moment.

In my old HackMaster group I recall two specific SOPs, both of which really seemed like OOC, I'll dare say "cheating", but both were established kind of painfully (well, as far as PCs go). I'll be a bit generic in the explanation 'cause there's no need to be bogged down by rules for a game you're not playing....
  1. The first happened after a long zombie campaign. In HackMaster a zombie is no big deal, but put a few together, and you're on the menu. Zombie have an interesting mechanic in that when you get a couple "on you" pretty much every other zombie in reach gets a free bite. Thing is that in HackMaster armor technically makes it easier to be hit, but reduces the amount of damage taken......and these free bites bypass this damage reduction. Armor can also make you fight/swing slower so.......when zombies come around, it's time to remove the armor. One group figure this out in-character after several large zombie battles where they barely survived and this TTP became party lore shared long after the original group's members were no longer around. Also, we kind of got in the habit of decapitating foes as a matter of course........to prevent zombie retaliation (so kind of a zombie twofer).
  2. Speaking of armor, when fighting HUGE foes, like really big humanoids/anything (Bugbears, Ogres, up to & including Giants), ditch the shield. Shields are literally designed to take a hit, and if the foes hits really hard to begin with, sometimes it's better to reduce the number of times you're hit instead of getting your shit kicked in because you put up this piece of wood and metal as an intentional target, backed by your body. We learned this one after having a couple of shields just shattered off of our PC's arms...and of course the PCs took some decent damage as well.
Now these were two specific SOP examples, but they were actually developed during the course of the game as opposed to players reading the rules and doing the math. Now I'm not saying that players doing player type stuff is bad per se, but I like the idea of SOPs developing as lore that gets passed down from one set of PCs to another over the course of (hopefully) years of in-game adventuring.

Now we just need to establish a SOP of an in-character journal to pass these nuggets down the line....

Kickstarter - Encounter Critical III

Encounter Critical III is an OSR roleplaying game by Venger Satanis... eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, and post-apocalyptic.

What can I say about Encounter Critical? Written by S. John Ross as a satire of other, prior Old School RPGs, it acquired a bit of a cult following. When it was put up for sale by its creator in early 2021, Venger purchased the rights to the system. Now, in the second half of 2022, Venger is Kickstarting Encounter Critical III (I do not believe there was an actual Encounter Critical I).

Note: The Original Encounter Critical can be snagged for free at DTRPG. Even if you have no desire to back the EC3 Kickstarter, this is no reason to miss out on the older, classic, free version of Encounter Critical.

So, what does the Encounter Critical III Kickstarter offer that differs from the original? In Venger's own words:

I'm all about rules-light, minimalist games, so I intend for Encounter Critical III to come out somewhere between 25-30 full-color pages.  That will include the rules to play the game and at least one introductory adventure.

I also intend for Encounter Critical III to be compatible with standard OSR systems and rules.  Here's a recent video of me talking about system simplicity without sacrificing the OMG, WTF?!? vibe: https://youtu.be/AQEO3ZY9naU

Additionally, there will be a one-page list of options allowing people to make their own OSR type RPG more like EC3, if they don't want to abandon their own system of choice.

What's the catch?  I'm setting the game in Cha'alt, or, at least, a version of Cha'alt, assuming, as I do, that campaign settings such as this exist in a multiverse.  If you already know and love Cha'alt, then it's a win/win/win!

If you are a fan of Venger's work, Encounter Critical III will likely be a good fit for you. If you aren't a fan, YMMV. The source material is solid. See for yourself, as the link is above.

Encounter Critical III is 10 bucks for 25-30 full-color pages in PDF. No print version is available at this time.

Humble Bundle - Fantasy RPG Comics (Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and More)

I've been on a comic book kick recently. Not the new stuff which is priced at 3? 4? bucks per 32-page book, but stuff like The Sandman (classic Neil Gaiman) via Cosmicology Unlimited and classic 2000 AD (Judge Dredd and more) via an earlier Humble Bundle. I am seriously enjoying reading comics on my iPad. It almost seems like it was built for the purpose.

Now I have the opportunity to add 14 fantasy titles for15 bucks with the Fantasy RPG Comics Bundle at Humble Bundle. Between this and my audiobooks, my reading material is covered for months! Huzzah!

Explore the role-playing experience with this fantastic bundle of fantasy comics! Delve deeper into the characters and lore of your favorite settings in stories based on Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. Discover a world where gaming sessions get all too real in the acclaimed horror-fantasy series Die. Follow the adventures of a band of mercs in the sword-and-sorcery send-up Skullkickers.

DTRPG Setting Sale - ALIEN, Twilight: 2000 and More

This week has some interesting titles as part of the DTRPG Settings Sale. I figured I'd highlight a few of my favorites:

ALIEN RPG - I actually played in a short campaign using these rules earlier in the year and it was a blast. I must say, the rules do a very good job of being fairly intuitive, at least from the player's perspective. I own the Starter Box as a physical product, and it does an excellent job presenting the rules and the default setting. The full ALIEN RPG is normally 24.99, but on sale for 14.99. The ALIEN Starter Set is normally 19.99, currently on sale for 11.99. There is also a large collection of discounted support material for the Alien RPG.

Twilight: 2000 4th Edition Core Set - I played the first edition of Twilight 2000 back in the 80s. It was all about tracking down fuel and food and simple survival. It was a good time. This is the new edition from Free League Publishing. I'm very tempted to pick up the new edition just to see if I can get my old group to play another session. Normally 29.99, Twilight: 2000 4th Edition Core Set is on sale for 23.99.

Vaesen - Nordic Horror Roleplaying - "Welcome to the Mythic North – northern Europe of the nineteenth century, but not as we know it today. A land where the myths are real. A cold reach covered by vast forests, it's few cities lonely beacons of industry and enlightenment – a new civilization dawning. But in the countryside, the old ways still hold sway. There, people know what lurks in the dark. They know to fear it. Vaesen presents a dark Gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and the old myths of Scandinavia." Damn, with a pitch like this I REALLY want to play in this setting. Normally 24.99, Vaesen - Nordic Horror Roleplaying is on sale for 14.99

Humble Bundle - 3d Printable Dungeons, Creatures, & More by Fat Dragon Games

I have some experience with Fat Dragon 3d Printable Terrain, having run The Mouth of Doom level of Rappan Athuk at a number of conventions in the late teens for Frog God Games. They are both lighter and cheaper than Dwarven Forge products (which are amazing), the only drawback (which is also a selling point) is that you need to have your own 3d printer (or know someone that does and is cool with printing out stuff for you). As I seem to be saying a lot these days - someday I'll be one of the cool kids ;)

For 18 bucks you get a literal unlimited (well, limited by your source material of plastic, but in theory, unlimited) amount of various terrain, creatures, and decorative items for your dungeons and ruins with the 3d Printable Dungeons, Creatures, & More Bundle from Fat Dragon Games

And I MAY just have figured out where to fit a 3d printer in this room. Time to take measurements...

I Got Called Out at Work this Week

I Got Called Out at Work this Week
This last week one of my co-workers tried making fun of RPGs (in general) and I mockingly took offense, which elicited a huge "NNNNNEEEEEEEEERRRDD!" in response.

Yes, I know I'm a Nerd/Dork/Dweeb.....but just because I sling dice on the weekends?

I do plenty of other shit that qualifies me to be a Nerd....yeah, I'm just going to stick with Nerd as my preferred put-down. OK, I do go to NTRPG every summer since I've been at this job. My co-workers think I cosplay......WTF?

Now I work with a bunch of Active-Duty Soldiers and Retired Vets at a military course, so there's a few well-deserved stereotypes in the workplace and Nerds/Dorks aren't generally considered one of them, but it should!

Nerd, Dork, Geek Chart

Seriously.....Monday morning is normally a bunch of talk about the weekends' games. Lots of stats, specifics on individual players, and even what sounds like some role-play when it comes to things like Fantasy Football. It really doesn't let up much Tuesday to Friday...

We are coming into fall so now it's football, but soon we'll be adding hunting into the mix and there's still some fishing to be had....oh and the weather is still good for golf.

Actually, on review of the appropriate chart my coworkers would probably classify as Geeks or Nerds since I wouldn't consider any of them as "Socially Inept". Probably not even a little bit.

Anyway, back to my accuser, that effer followed up with "Well I actually used to like RPGS." Oh really, what kind?

"Baldur's Gate"

Geek Hierarchy

Oh for fuck's sake. If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone equate table-top RPGs with a computer game......well I wouldn't have to be in a workplace to hear this BS one more time...

While I do own the hobbies that bring me joy, it grates on me after a while that I get a light ribbing...if I'm lucky, or the occasional medium harassment, from people that have their own thing that brings them happiness. That they can't see that they're just the same as me, just with different shit.

Except Furries.....they've just got problems.
