Bundle of Holding - Mutant Crawl Classics

I love Mutant Crawl Classics. I try to play it at least once a year at various gaming conventions - it's a damn blast to play. It's Gamma World on steroids!

Adventurer! We've resurrected our September 2021 Mutant Crawl Classics Bundle featuring the post-apocalyptic science-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game of technology and triumph in a devastated future, Mutant Crawl Classics from Goodman Games. Whether you're a mutant, a seeker, a robot-killer, or a stoic shaman guarding forgotten ancient sciences, there are treasures to be won in the taboo lands and the ruins of the Ancients. Based on Goodman's Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, Mutant Crawl Classics is a standalone game in the tradition of Gamma World and Metamorphosis Alpha. You have a new chance to activate your artifact and go adventuring like it's 1978.

For just US$7.95 you get all three titles in this revived offer's Starter Collection (retail value $38) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete Mutant Crawl Classics RPG core rulebook along with the Judge's Screen and the introductory adventure Hive of the Overmind.

And if you pay more than the threshold price of $18.54, you'll level up and also get this revival's entire Bonus Collection with seven more titles worth an additional $49, including the supplement The Data Orb of Metakind (published as MCC adventure #8) and six full-length adventures that take your characters from zero-level nobodies to level 5: Seeking the Post-Humans, A Fallen Star For All, Incursion of the Ultradimension, The Evil of the Ancients, Blessings of the Vile Brotherhood, and The Apocalypse Ark.

Kickstarter - Installation 665 (MCC RPG Adventure)

A 3rd Level Mutant Crawl Classics Compatible Adventure by Julian Bernick -  MCC / DCC

I'm a huge fan of DCC and MCC adventures, even if my gaming group isn't a fan of the system. That's okay, good adventures can be played with any ruleset :)

The Installation 665 Kickstarter is 8 bucks in PDF and 20 bucks in Print plus PDF (plus shipping).

The book will be of the same quality as our previous offerings, saddle-stitched and printed locally on 8 1/2 x 11 premium silk paper. I’ll personally pick up the books, so there’s no added shipping time once the printer has them ready.

We are ready for print. The writing, editing, layout, and art are all complete. You will most likely get this book in your hands much sooner than the reward date suggests.

No AI was used for artwork or writing.

Humble Bundle - DCC & MCC Megabundle #2

Some of the most imaginative adventures in the OSR, and perhaps in RPGs at large, are written for the DCC & MCC RPGs IMHO. Maybe it's the default wackiness of the system, but I've run DCC RPG adventures with Swords & Wizardry rules, and the results were awesome.

The DCC & MCC RPGs hit Humble Bundle earlier today. For as little as a buck, you can get the DCC RPG Core Rulebook, two adventures, and a coupon to use at the Goodman Games website. 25 bucks gives you the DCC and MCC rulebooks, plus 77 adventures and supplements for the two systems. That's about 35 cents a book. Unbelievable!

NTRPG Con - MCC Did a Job on Me, Now I am a Real Mutie!

Today is Day 2 of NTRPG Con, and it started early for us. There was a podcaster breakfast at 7 am (ungodly time if you ask me), but we made it by around 730. Great bunch of folks and always great to get some Facetime in with other casters in the community.

After breakfast, Rach and I napped until our noon MCC RPG session - Hail Ceaser Salad! run by Ian McGarty. It was an extremely entertaining and fun funnel. Funnels work well as convention sessions - character death becomes part of the fun.

We had well over a dozen character deaths among the players - Rach and I only had one death each time for (pure luck), but others burned through their sheets and had to grab a second ;)

We have another livestream tonight!

Kickstarter - The Valley Out of Time for S&W DCC MCC Part 5&6 FINAL!

Sometimes MORE literally is better. In this case, we are talking about more Skeeter Green. No. I've known Skeeter for years. I consider him a friend. I've also been nearly violated by Skeeter (listen to one of the livestreams where Skeeter has guested on Talking Crit and you'll probably hear the story told), so pissing off Skeeter might not be a "good thing". Thankfully, I've enjoyed the prior parts to the Valley out of Time and I'm eagerly awaiting parts 5 and 6 to wrap this fucker up. Now I'll need to find time to run them ;)

I'm backing The Valley Out of Time for S&W DCC MCC Part 5&6 FINAL! for the Swords & Wizardry flavor in Print & PDF. 18 bucks plus shipping, I think is a steal.

The Valley Out of Time is a series of 'zine-sized adventures from SGP. This valley can be placed in any ongoing campaign and is set in the "Neanderthal Period" of tech development. Huge monsters – both dinosaurs and otherwise – and devolved humanoids plague the area, and only the hardiest of adventurers will prevail! This series of adventures borrows heavily from classic dinosaur art, books, and movies; if you have ever seen a classic Frank Frazetta or Roy Krenkel painting, or read or watched The Land that Time Forgot, The Lost World, Journey to the Center of the Earth, One Million Years B.C., The Flintstones, any Ray Harryhausen film, etc., you are going to feel right at home.

All the books in the series are 5 1/2" x 8" saddle-stitch (stapled) or perfect-bound (glued) "zine size" offerings, ranging from 20 to 30 (or more!) pages. The price for the books is based off calculations for the 20-page book, so the larger books are just more content! Enjoy!

Kickstarter - The Valley Out of Time series for S&W DCC MCC Part 3&4

The Valley Out of Time
is a series of 'zine-sized adventures borrowing heavily from classic dinosaur art, books, and movies.

This is the part where I reveal my connections to Skeeter Green. Suffice to say, I watched him with my own eyes passionately assault Bad Mike at Gary Con back in 2016. Bleach could not remove that image burned into my brain :) Despite that, I consider Skeeter both a friend AND a skilled writer of RPG material. So, if there are any biases in how I view Skeet's work, now you know why.

That being said, the first two entries in The Valley Out of Time series were top-notch. Well written, excellent art, quality paper, and delivered promptly (and safely). They kind of hit all of my Kickstarter benchmarks.

Skeeter is currently Kickstarting The Valley Out of Time Parts 3 & 4. Both PDFs of Parts 3 & 4 are 8 bucks (choose your system, I choose S&W). Books 3&4 in Print plus PDF are 18 bucks plus shipping(again, choose your system). There are other options, but these are the ones I found to be the best fit for me.

Picking Up Some New Dice from Monday Knight Adventures (DCC/MCC compatible 14 dice set)

Picking Up Some New Dice from Monday Knight Adventures (DCC/MCC compatible 14 dice set)
Just a head's up that today's post is 110% me "abusing" the privilege of being able to post "whatever I want" here at the Tavern.........

Now I will admit that as a (RPG) gamer I like dice. I mean who here doesn't?!

I'm also a self-diagnosed dice snob, using my old-school Gamescience dice to exclusion of almost any others. Kind of a difficult position to be in since I cannot really get any more GS dice. Sure, there are some available, but my ability to get all the dice I want, like another d30, yeah.....just not going to happen. I lucked out getting the last two d30's Zocchi had, but that tale has been told (hence the link).

As an almost aside, I used to play HackMaster 4th edition (I know, as if I've never brought that one up before) and I went through a stupid number of dice in that game. Like at one point I HAD to have a metric shit-ton of d6s and d4s for some of my DS Invoker's spells (including some for penetration rolls), but luckily back then I had the means and ability to purchase Gamescience dice, so I have a good supply of dice I'm not currently using....unless I want some of the odd ones, like d3's, d5's etc. While I have some, they are mismatched and not quite what I need when I'm playing Dungeon Crawl Classics or Mutant Crawl Classics.

If you haven't played DCC or MCC, the game can get a bit crazy with odd dice rolls, but the extreme randomness is part of the game's balance. You can get by replacing some dice rolls with others, like using a d30 for a d14 and ignoring any roll of  15+, but that doesn't work out that great......and just sucks if you're dice fan, and most of us are dice fans.

What normally happens is I use my normal GS dice set and then somehow I manage to get into a DCC or MCC game and then have a last-minute burning desire, nay need, for the full range of odd dice for a DCC/MCC game. Then I have to make a run to the dealer's hall and cough up $30 for whatever I can get. One set of dice for a pick-up game is fine, but not enough......I like to use two sets of dice when I play because, well.....you know.....sometimes dice just go cold and shit. If I'm stuck using a bum d20 I guess I could grab one of my regular dice, but then I'm mixing sets.....

....and you know how the dice don't like it when you mix them up.....

.....and sure it works for a d20, but what if it's your d14 goes bad for a spell?

No, I need two matched sets of dice. Since we have North Texas RPG Con coming up I figured I'd grab one of my older "emergency purchase" sets and find another matching set. Well that was my plan....

....until I found out that a couple of guys I knew from my HackMaster 4th Edition days had contracted with Impact! Miniatures to get their own batch of DCC/MCC compatible dice made. They're making them under the company name of Monday Knight Adventures and the dice can be found on eBay for now.

Poisoned Skulls 14 piece dice set

Now since I know the guys behind Monday Knight Adventures and despite their public attempts to sometimes come off as indifferent a-holes, they're actually good guys. Back in the day when I was fortunate enough to be on a business trip to Nashville, I'd make the 2 hour trip to sit in on their Monday night home game.....and when I needed some help play-testing some tournament adventures I knew if I flew across the country they'd free up a weekend to run through the adventures.

On a more personal note, when I was going through some tough times during my volunteer days, these guys (the whole group, not just the two behind MKA) epitomized the saying "Who's got your back?", which (ironically) was a HackMaster "thing".

Clearly I think it would be cool if anyone who is interested in supporting some good guys, or who needs some cool dice, heads over and picks some of these "Poisoned Skulls" dice off of ebay. Now I'm into this for more than just a cheap Tavern shout-out.....since I'm pretty much on business trips until right before NTRPG, I don't have the ability to make my normal GM thank you gifts this year. *Spoiler Alert* if you are reading this and happen to have me playing at your table this year, you're getting a set of these dice.

I figure this is pretty much a win-win-win.

Kickstarter - The Valley Out of Time series for S&W DCC MCC

Okay, let's start with the part most folks don't say out loud. I consider Skeeter a friend. I know, for some that is a scary concept, but I actually like and respect Skeeter. I also consider Skeeter to be a highly skilled adventure designer. He has a skill that many believe they have, but few match.

Now that that part is out of the way, Skeeter's newest Kickstarter is The Valley Out of Time series for S&W DCC MCC. Yep, The Valley out of Time comes in three flavors, and not one is 5e. Good for Skeeter ;)

You can back for the first entry in the series (planned at six) or for the first two entries in the series. I'm in for print copies (plus PDF) of the first two entries in the series for the Swords & Wizardry system.

The Valley Out of Time is a series of 6, 'zine-sized adventures from SGP.

Get your friends to pack-attack these encounters!

Each book is a 5 1/2" x 8" saddle-stitch (stapled) "zine size" offering, ranging from 2X to 3X (or more!) pages. The price for the books is based off calculations for the 2X page book, so the larger books are just more content! Enjoy!

Welcome to the Valley

Welcome to the Valley is Part 1 of the series, suitable for entry level characters and those beginning their explorations into the Timeless Valley. Four to six characters of level 1–3 should find the encounters presented herein challenging but manageable. This entry to the Timeless Valley series introduces the characters to the valley, some of its peaceful and helpful inhabitants, as well as several of the less hospitable ones. The characters encounter a humanoid camp, and 3 additional animal encounters to give them a taste of what they're in for with further exploration. Welcome to the Valley includes 4 new/modified valley inhabitants, an Appendix showcasing where to find existing adversaries for the valley, and a brief explanation of what the Timeless Valley "is"; it is 20+ pages in length, with a map of the initial humanoid camp, original art, and a convenient, easy-to-follow layout.

Exploring the Valley

Exploring the Valley is Part 2 of the series, suitable for more experienced characters in the valley. Four to six characters of level 2–5 should be challenged by the encounters provided, including stumbling upon a humanoid hunting group taking down a giant bison, a massive saber-tooth cat having some lunch, and the Timeless Valley's version of an owlbear (think owlbear, BUT THINK BIGGER!). In addition to these encounters, 6 new valley inhabitants are presented, and Appendix B offers Random Encounter Tables, suitable for fleshing out the valley, or for use in any hex crawl involving the jungle, grasslands, or rolling hills. The encounters presented cover 13 pages of classic "Appendix N" and "Frazetta-esque" adversaries to give the classic stop-motion movie experience! Exploring the Valley is 30+ pages in length, with original art, tables and charts galore, and plenty of information to aid Gamemasters to fill up hours of overland adventuring!

Kickstarter - Seekers of the Un-K'Nown: A Classics Mutated Adventure

A post-apocalyptic, sci-fi adventure compatible with Mutant Crawl Classics.

There is something about post-apocalypse games that I really enjoy, going back to Gamma Word 1e. It's the idea that the common is now rare, and technology is damn near like magic and rarely fully understood. Mutant Crawl Classics takes the genre to 11 in many ways.

With Seekers of the Un-K'Nown, we mix that with some old school sandbox gaming and it might be exactly what I'm looking for. Of course, I might convert it to Mutant Future to allow me to run it with minimal page flipping. Yeah, I have my issues with too much page flippin'! ;)

18 bucks (plus shipping) for the Print plus PDF. Damn near impossible to pass on at that price point.

This has all the dungeon-crawly goodness of those early modules we all used to play but with the added bonus of a "through-line" plot to pull the dungeon encounters together and bring a little conflict/pressure into an otherwise sandbox-style game.  More than that, I've intentionally written in nice spring board moments where judges can connect the game up to other adventures they plan to run or follow this one up with some of the other Classics Mutated adventures we have in the works -like a voyage to the red planet in our next game, "The Time-Lost Citadel."

Kickstarter - SCIENTIFIC BARBARIAN No.3 (post-apocalyptic)

I'm pretty fond of the Mutant Crawl Classics RPG. To hamfist a quote inspired by Spinal Tap: "This Gamma World Clone goes to Eleven!" Note, no drummers were killed creating this RPG ;)

So, what is SCIENTIFIC BARBARIAN No.3? According to the Kickstarter page, "Bigger and better than a fanzine, not quite as fancy as a magazine, SCIENTIFIC BARBARIAN No.3 is a megazine. It’s 6” x 9” in size, with 64+ pages of professional gaming content created and produced by industry veterans. Our megazines are also perfect-bound with a spine, so they stand up nicely on a shelf as you collect them! This is an exciting new format we here at Mudpuppy Games are proud to pioneer, and we can’t wait to see how many others adopt what we think is a pretty handy format for jamming a publication straight into your game bag or your backpack."

So, a zine that goes to Eleven! Cool :)

Does that mean that SCIENTIFIC BARBARIAN No.3 is specifically written for the MCC RPG? No, but it will certainly fit very well with MCC, Gamma World, Mutant Future, and the like. Heck, even fits with your OSR fantasy rules if you want to push your campaign in different directions.

Kickstarter - Welcome To Eastwood (MCC/DCC RPG)

Continuing with my Kickstarter catchup :)

Today we are looking at the Welcome To Eastwood Kickstarter for the MCC/DCC RPGs. It looks to be a "funhouse" sandbox-style local setting/adventure that seems perfect for dropping into a campaign. I'm a sucker for setting material, and sandboxing just adds points ;)

Welcome to Eastwood is a 28pp MCC or DCC sandbox adventure for 1st or 2nd level characters. While it is made for Dungeon Crawl Classics or Mutant Crawl Classics, it could be adapted to almost any RPG world/system.

The Village of Eastwood

Eastwood is the ultimate vacation theme park. Its "wild west" veneer conceals the techno wizardry of a powerful temporal field. After weeks (or months) at the resort, visitors could re-enter life moments after leaving for vacation, and never miss a day’s work. But neglect of its systems sends the entire park bouncing into distant pasts and futures.

The adventure begins as the PCs stumble upon a strange “village” that mysteriously appears overnight. Getting into Eastwood is simple, but escaping proves to be a deadly challenge.

The art looks perfect for the described adventure, and it's a low-level adventure, so it should be easy enough to convert to the OSR system of your choice (which is what I do with DCC RPG adventures in any case)

The PDF is 5 bucks (a bargain), print is 9 bucks plus shipping and print plus PDF is 13 bucks (plus shipping).

Deal of the Day - Dead In The Water (MCC RPG)

Tim Snider. The man, the myth, the amazing GM. Time Master, Toon, Mutant Future and more - no system will lay abandoned in his hands. Or something like that. Tim is, quite simply, "good folk" and I like to support good folk. Besides, Tim was my wife Rachel's first GM. :)

Today's Deal of the Day is Dead in the Water, a funnel for the Mutant Crawl Classics RPG by none other than Tim Snider. Normally 6.99 in PDF, until tomorrow morning you can get it for 3.49. Now THAT is a deal ;)
Mindless, water-logged abominations have been coming ashore, attacking fishing villages along the coast of The Rainbow Sea, then dragging their victims off to a watery doom. Your ragtag party of post-apocalyptic Seekers have been tasked with stopping the invasion. Perhaps the answer can be found on the legendary Island of Fire.
Dead In The Water is a beginning funnel adventure for 12 to 16 0-level Seekers. This product is compatible with the Mutant Crawl Classics Role-Playing Game (MCC RPG).

Kickstarter - Check This Artifact - More Deadly Artifacts for Your Mutant Crawling Game (by Jim Wampler)

Simply put, Jim Wampler writes good stuff. Heck, he's the author of Mutant Crawl Classics, a game that DCC RPG-ified a world full of gamma radiation. See what I did there? ;)

Check This Artifact is along those lines:
Clocking in at over 56 pages and crammed with content, Check This Artifact contains 30 brand-new artifacts of the Ancient Makers, plus a brand-new godlike AI, all for use in your mutant crawling or other post-apocalyptic role playing game. Penned by the creator of Mutant Crawl Classics RPG and published by Mudpuppy Games, these powerful technological treasures are more than mere artifacts, because each item in this book is a plot hook and a potential mini-adventure in the making.
Check This Artifact presents artifacts for your players to attempt to track down, tame, and temper — including weapons, armor, robots, AIs, and those extra-special items that are the sole purview of far-future fiction. Just check out the contents page.

So, how much is the buy-in? 10 bucks for the PDF. 15 bucks for the softcover plus PDF (shipping not included). I think I'm in for the softcover :)

New Podcast - Glowburn-Mutant Crawl Classics RPG

Glowburn is the new podcast for the Mutant Crawl Classics RPG.

What's that? the MCC RPG hasn't released yet? How can they have a podcast for a game that hasn't released yet?

You'll need to listen ;)

(Well, that and they talk about other post apoc RPGs - it's an interesting listen IMHO)
