Southland, Wilderlands or a Hybrid Combination of the Settings...

Last Saturday night, when we decided to move on from the DCC RPG to S&W, one of the settings suggested was The Wilderlands. I knew where the box was, but I feared the two books for the setting were boxed away in storage, so I voted it down.

Needless to say, I found the books ;)

So, do I stick with the Southlands from Points of Light, which my party will probably outgrow around 5th or 6th level?

Do I switch it to the Wilderlands before we start on Saturday Night and chose a region to start with?

Or, do I wedge the Southlands into the Wilderlands, glossing over any rough edges and use both?

  2. Only if you go with the original JG newsprint versions. They skimped on the books, but they made it up in spades with the maps.

  3. Wilderlands! Wilderlands! It's the ultimate sandbox setting. That way if we decide to go off the beaten trail, you know where the fuck we are. :) Seriously, that setting gives the most player flexibility for all the things i as a player want to do with my characters.

  5. The PoL mini-settings are good for mini-campaigns - 5-6 levels sounds about right. But if you are looking for a long term campaign surely Wilderlands would be a better bet. Take a PoL sized starting area to read and develop as you would Southland (I'm currently working on the Ghinarian Hills in SE Altanis). Then you can expand the scope of play as the group reaches high levels.
BTW get Rob Conley to show you his faction-influence map he did for his writing on Barbarian Altanis, it's awesome. :)

  6. You could always set Southlands where the original Blackmoor was just north of the Valley of the Ancients.

And if you use the boxed set, I wrote the villages and citadels on City-State, Barbarian Altanis, and the northern half the Isle of the Blest.

    1. Players request. As a predominantly Old School group, they wanted something less crunchy and more traditional.

They also were looking for a return to sandbox play, as we did in spring and summer of 2012
