Bundle of Holding - Purple Sorcerer Quick Deal

I love me some Purple Sorceror. I've been following John Marr/Purple Sorceror since the early days of the DCC RPG. Amazingly enough, I'm only missing one item from the current Purple Sorcerer Bundle of Holding Quick Deal.

Adventurer! This all-new Purple Sorcerer DCC Quick Deal presents tabletop fantasy roleplaying adventures from Purple Sorcerer Games for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games. One of the oldest third-party DCC publishers, Purple Sorcerer produces free online DCC generators and that indispensable DCC utility, the Crawler's Companion. Purple Sorcerer's DCC scenarios feature sandbox settings with gaudy vistas, melodramatic characters, and deadly perils. Send your zero-level DCC characters through some of the most popular "funnels" in the game's history – for an unbeatable bargain price.

For just US$9.95 you get all four titles (with ten complete adventures!) in our Purple Collection (retail value $45) as DRM-free ebooks:

  • The Sunken City Omnibus collection of introductory adventures (containing Perils of the Sunken City, Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk, A Gathering of the Marked, and Lair of the Mist Men)
  • The Sullenlands Adventure Omnibus & Guide (containing Nebin Pendlebrook's Perilous Pantry, Frost Fang Expedition, and Crypt in Cadaver Canyon)
  • Carnival of the Damned
  • Escape From the Shrouded Fen

Kickstarter - Dread Specters of the Shrieking Vale (OSR, DCC, and 5e)

A brilliant DCC, 5E, and OSR jungle adventure (and more!) from Purple Sorcerer Games, influenced by the folklore of S.E. Asia

It shouldn't be a secret that I consider Jon Marr of Purple Sorcerer Games a friend. Jon has been a huge supporter of The Tavern and OSR Christmas over the years. The Purple Sorcerer site is probably the go-to site for most DCC RPG gamers, and I've used Jon's Zero Party Generator for years.

I've used Purple Sorcerer's past DCC RPG releases with the Swords & Wizardry rules, converting on the fly. With their latest Kickstarter, Dread Specters of the Shrieking Vale, you can snag a copy for your preferred ruleset - OSR, DCC RPG, or even 5e.

Funding ends around 6 pm, March 19th, 2022 (Tomorrow when I type this)

  • A thrilling Dungeon Crawl Classics jungle adventure also offered in thoughtfully converted 5th Edition and 'OSR Compatible' versions! (In both PDF and POD print).
  • Pledge for either the Basic Version of the adventure, which contains the full 1st level adventure Dread Specters of the Shrieking Vale, along with stretch goal goodies like paper miniatures and a poster pack.
  • Or level up to the Expanded Version, which adds a host of new material to the adventure to become A Field Guide to the Great Jungle. Additional content includes the history of the Great Jungle, sandbox mechanics to challenge your players as they explore its endless dark, extra stretch goal goodies, and more! The POD print version of the Field Guide is unique to this Kickstarter: it will never be available later on DriveThruRPG to the general public. (The Field Guide in PDF form, and the basic adventure in POD/PDF, won't be available for general purchase until early 2023... so backers get roughly a six month jump on access).
  • At higher pledge levels, you will also have the opportunity to place your own mark on the Great Jungle by adding content to the Field Guide: describe a unique villager that inhabits the village of Sunggal, or create a description/location/encounter to intrigue or bedevil players as they explore the endless morass!

The Tavern is supported by readers like you. The easiest way to support The Tavern is to shop via our affiliate links. DTRPGAmazon, and Humble Bundle are affiliate programs that support The Tavern.

Kickstarter - The Crypt in Cadaver Canyon & More!

"Exciting new Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG content from Mark Bishop and Purple Sorcerer Games."

I must confess, I really enjoy releases from Purple Sorcerer. I've run prior releases back when I was doing some fairly regular one-shot gaming sessions (soon to return pending renovations completion I promise!)

So, what are we being offered this time?
We’re excited to announce The Crypt in Cadaver Canyon, another thrilling Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG adventure from the mind of author Mark Bishop. This campaign will also help us combine the new module with Mark’s previous adventures to create a massive new omnibus version: The Sullenlands Adventure Omnibus and Guide!
We’ve chosen to kickstart this effort for a few important reasons, including:
  • To allow us to enhance the project with the talents of two of our favorite artists: Stefan Poag and Peter Mullen!
  • To expand the Omnibus into a full-fledged campaign guide, filled with new monsters, magic items, world details, additional adventure, and more!
  • To make additional content like beautiful new battlemaps and posters possible.
We think your players will love this new adventure, and any Judge will benefit from the new content found in the campaign guide. We hope you’ll join us on this exciting new adventure!
The Crypt in Cadaver Canyon challenges 4-6 2nd level adventurers to save a hidden desert city (along with its cursed inhabitants) from the wrath of a devious and chaotic god. Its 48 digest-sized pages are packed with dangerous environments, exotic threats, and a world-shaking finale with thousands of lives on the line!
Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG adventures are easily adaptable to work in any ‘old school’ system, so the adventure and additional materials will benefit any GM looking to deliver some classic adventuring to their players, even if DCC isn’t your system of choice!
Jon, the Purple Sorcerer himself, has sent me a "no-frills" version of the adventure in PDF for me to read and review. Expect that to happen over the next few days.

PDF of the adventure is 7 bucks. PDF of adventure plus omnibus plus stretch goals is 20. Add in POD at cost coupon and you're at 27.

Time to read - after tonight's Game of Thrones!

Purple Sorcerer Games Sale - 40% off all PDF releases (DCC RPG)

Did I mention that I expect sales to kick off hot and heavy over the next few days? Well, they are. Purple Sorcerer is next in the mix, offering 40% off their entire catalogue in PDF (prices good through Monday). Hmmm... it does seem very DCC RPG heavy recently, doesn't it?

I'm a huge fan of Purple Sorcerer, so its hard for me to point at any one product and say "get that one!", but Carnival of the Damned is probably the easiest to rip to pieces and put back together as your own Frankenstein ;)

Remember, all purchases using The Tavern's OBS affiliate links puts 5% of your purchase price into The Tavern's coffers. Don't leave that money on the table for the greedy corps! Tip your barman!  ;)

Purple Sorcerer 2016 Free Tools Pledge Drive has Just Kicked Off

Short and simple.

+Jon Marr has done some amazing work with the Purple Sorcerer's assortment of tools for the DCC RPG. If you play DCC I can you've probably used one if not all of the tools. Zero Level Character Generator for the win ;)

This pledge drive should reach it's highest goal before the night is out, not in a week! I just put my $25 into the pool. You dont need to strike that high. A buck or two would help things along ;)

This really is a good cause and helps someone support the community he loves.

Mini Review - The Carnival of the Damned (DCC RPG - Tournament or Funnel Adventure)

First, let me apologize to +Jon Marr and +David Baity . Jon put a prerelease copy of The Carnival of the Damned in my virtual hands in early January and I never got around to reviewing it. The last few months were certainly hectic, but now that time is slowly becoming my friend, Ive been playing catch up. Which is where we are at right now ;)

The Carnival of the Damned can be played either as a Tournament adventure, in which case players play until their character dies and then a new player jumps in OR as a 0-level funnel. If used as a funnel, it has the ability to be used multiple times, as you'll probably only use a half dozen or so of the encounters (and maybe one or two of the random encounters) in a session. As you can see already, you get lots of gaming material for your money.

Now obviously, if there's a carnival, there has to be clowns. And when I think of evil clowns, Killer Klowns from Outer Space comes to mind. So, sidetracked. Anyhow, the artwork in CoD isn't the cute but disturbing art that Jon Marr is known for and that's because Jonn didn't do the art in this one. +Doug Kovacs did the cover and David Baity, Todd McGowan, Danny Prescott, Stan Reed, Simon Todd did the interiors and what interiors they are.

Right. Encounters. There's a gawd damn Whack-A-Mole encounter. How awesome is that? More awesome than you can imagine, but I'm not giving it away. Yep, even a Petting Zoo. Bet you won't see what's coming in this encounter. Heck, you wont see what've coming in nearly all the encounters.
They aren't curve balls and they make their own kinda sense, but your players won't find themselves in familiar territory.

Cop nightmares are
made of this
If you are running this for your home group, once the 0-level survivors reach 1st level you could easily keep the Carnival running for another session or three. In it's own way, it's a contained sandbox and there is a mystery for the PCs to solve (and souls to save - maybe even their own). If I get a chance to run this, it's how I would want things to work out. Multiple sessions with the group whittling down and the survivors getting enough experience (a level or two) to solve the mystery.

Which is a great thing about The Carnival of the Damned. There's a ton of fun content. It would be a shame not to get the most out of it.

Oh, before I forget to mention it again. The art. Flat out awesome.

Purple Sorcerer Games releases Sorcerer’s Grimoire online app for Testing (DCC RPG)

+Jon Marr has done it again!

Every DCC RPG player knows about The Crawler's Companion. So long as you have a smart phone, tablet or computer near by, you can roll just about anything and any table in the DCC RPG.

0-Level Character generator? Purple Sorcerer has you covered.

Now, Jon allows you to print out the spell tables for your character, one sheet per page with the Sorcerer's Grimoire. My God, the amount of page flipping done away with is going to save lives ;)

As always, its free.

Well done Jon. Well done.

Mini Review - The Sunken City Adventure Omnibus & Guide (DCC RPG)

I wanted to get a review of The Sunken City Adventure Omnibus & Guide posted while it was still one sale for GMs Day at 30% off, but why repeat some of my earlier posts ;)

I've reviewed some of the individual titles of the Sunken City series previously:

A Gathering of the Marked

The Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk

Perils of the Sunken City

The adventures read well and play well and now come wrapped in a fine bow. The complete package also includes Lair of the Mist Men, adventure hooks, new magic items, new creatures, a new patron and more.

I really had blast running The Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk - can't believe that was nearly two years ago.

Listen, it's well done and fun to play and really does DCC well and would probably convert well to other OSR games too.

But hey, let me quote from the books RPGNow page so you know what you are getting, which is a lot if you ask me:

The Sunken City Adventure Omnibus & Guide contains four complete beginning adventures and a host of new material to enhance your Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign. Features include:

Every best-selling Sunken City Adventure (Perils of the Sunken City, The Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk, A Gathering of the Marked, Lair of the Mist Men) combined and refined into a single full-color volume.

Both a 96-page desktop/print version and a 200-page mobile version built from scratch for viewing on your tablet!

A massive 84-page master appendix containing extra content, pre-gen characters, player maps, 1-inch scale battle maps, and over 150 paper miniatures.

A patron write-up of Malloc, the devious master of secrets.

At long last... Opossuman player characters!

Adventure seeds, new monsters, 24 new magic items, judging tips, and more!

Print Version: Special Offer
Both hardcover and softcover version of the Sunken City Adventure Omnibus & Guide are coming! Everyone who purchases the PDF version in the interim will receive a special offer to purchase the print version at the lowest price when available!

If you've previously purchased one or more of the Sunken City Adventures from RPGNow, you should have received an email with a code to purchase it at a reduced price. If you haven't, or have purchased the adventures from both RPGNow and other locations, contact us at info@purplesorcerer.com with a list of the adventures you own, and we'll get you set up!

That's a crap load for your $12.59 (at least through March 15th.)

Mini Review - A Gathering of the Marked (DCC RPG Adventure Funnel)

A Gathering of the Marked is Purple Sorcerer's latest release in it's line of DCC RPG adventures. If you aren't familiar with Purple Sorcerer's stuff, it's always high end with great production values and a little bit of whimsy to juxtapose the usual DCC RPG darkness.

This time around, +Jon Marr gives us a DCC 0 level funnel with ALL the trappings. I do mean ALL of the trappings. Paper minis (pages and pages), pregen characters, player visuals (perfect for use in Roll20 and other online VTTs) - lots of value for your gaming dollar.

What about the adventure itself? Like most of the Purple Sorcerer stuff, you're looking at at least 2 sessions of gameplay if not 3. My favorite scene is near the beginning - ask my players if I can spend a good part of the session talking like a pirate - then ask them if I even should ;)

As I said above, there is a share of dark and brooding, but the whimsical balances it out so well, it makes for a unique feel amongst the various DCC release lines.

There are some very unique magic items available for the players to discover. They are not overly powerful on the whole and add some excitement for the players when acquired.

How lethal is it? You can expect the party to get whittled down constantly, perhaps to the point they won't even realize their total loses. There are opportunities to replace lost party members and keep the funnel moving, but it is lethal.. It looks to be a lot of fun to run - or play in. Well done!

From the blurb:

Rich and poor, bond and free: every few months an unsuspecting few awake to find a ragged circle of midnight black scrawled on their foreheads; a dark summoning whispering on the edge of their consciousness. All who live in the shadow of the Great City know to ignore the call of the mark is to invite madness and a lingering and horrific death, so each will find his way to the sending stones, and the unspeakable peril that waits beyond.

Designed for 0-level adventurers, A Gathering of the Marked challenges a band of strangers to endure the mad games of a power who's motivations are as mysterious as its identity. Can the summoned survive to wrest control of their lives once more? Will they turn on those they struggle with, or band together to defeat a common enemy? Will they finally come face to face with the twisted power that has called them, and uncover its dark secrets? All will be revealed in A Gathering of the Marked!

Features of A Gathering of the Mark

-Horrifying fun compatible with the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG from Goodman Games (easily convertible to your favorite 'old school' system... and by easy, we mean easy easy!)
-Explore the cursed village of Haven's Fall, battling shambling horrors, freakishly nimble puppets, cow-devouring tentacles and more!
-Uncover the secrets of the Cult of Athax: foul minions of a Shadow Wizard with dark designs on not only the world, but you in particular!
-Packed with adventuring possibilities: twice the length of Perils of the Sunken City, with full color artwork throughout all 24 adventure pages + 24 additional appendix pages.
-Nearly 100 paper miniatures included for those who want to see the action unfold. (13 Free battlemaps available on the Purple Sorcerer Games website.)
-Virtually every image is included in easily printable format in the appendix making creating handouts a breeze!
-New: Comes with two streamlined tablet versions for both large and small tablets and mobile devices.

Does Anyone That Plays Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG NOT Use The Crawler's Companion?

+Jon Marr has been updating The Crawler's Companion constantly since it released on the Android, Nook and Apple App stores and it is damn amazing! My biggest complaint about the DCC RPG has always been the size of the damn rulebook and the sheer amount of charts - it amounts to a natural 20 on an Intimidation Check.

The Crawler's Companion is like Intimidation Invulnerability ;)

Oh, and did I mention it's free? If you don't have a tablet or compatible phone, you can still access The Crawler's Companion via the web. It's got charts, spells and will even do your funky dice rolls - so you can play without the funky dice!

Not to mention all the other cool tools for the DCC RPG at the Purple Sorcerer Games site (not the least of which is the 0-Level Character creator).

I'm reading some newly released DCC RPG adventures (can you tell?) and I might think of NOT converting them for S&W - or better yet, run them under both DCC and S&W rules with separate groups.

I need more free time ;)

Purple Sorcerer Games to Participate in the Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day Blogfest (68 Blogs and Growing)

Purple Sorcerer Games will be participating in the Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day... and it
will involve free stuff ;)

"I’ll be doing something for Erik’s Sword and Wizardry appreciation day. S&W is a fine OSR system with lots of cross-pollination possibilities with the DCC RPG.
Whatever I do will involve giving away free adventures, so stay tuned."
Jon over at Purple Sorcerer has been awesome to work with during the DCC RPG Contests (there will be another later on this spring - also stay tuned). Actually, all of the 3rd Party publishers for the DCC RPG have been great to work with and have been extremely generous. As I have plans to convert many of these DCC adventures for my personal use with Crypts & Things, having Jon join the S&W Party later on this month is damn awesome!

We currently have 68 blogs signed up to participate from all over the world - or at least the Americas and Europe ;)

First Look - Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk (DCC RPG Adventure)

Jon over at Purple Sorcerer Games just gave me the go ahead to run Ooze Pits of Jonas Gralk as my Zero Level Funnel for the first session of my latest DCC RPG Arc.

Why is this so special? Besides the fact that it's pretty damn cool, it isn't even released yet. It might get released this weekend or early next week, but I've been looking at a pre-release copy for the past few days and I'm really psyched I'll get to use it.

Look at the map on the left - awesome, aint it?

Guess what?

There is actually a town to for the PCs to check out. Rumors for them to hear. Player Handouts (need to see how to work this with G+ Hangouts).

Oh, and of course kill lots of shit. Or get killed by lots of shit ;)

Damn but I'm psyched! Did i mention that already?
