What Class Do You Usually Play in a D&D Type Game?

We all have our "go to" character type. Well, almost all of us ;)

For me it seems to usually be a Cleric or a Fighter / Cleric type multiclass. A Dwarven Fighter / Cleric to be precise.

I like to mix it up in combat AND I like the chance to cast the occasional spell. I tend to find the lower lever Magic-Users to be difficult to stay engage with as a player, especially after you throw your spell or two. M-U / Thief or a Bard type class work for me too.

So, what class / class combo is your default? Maybe you don't have a default...

  1. Usually I play the world since I like DMing, but when prone to play a character I tend to default to clerics or monks. Some how I feel typecasting overshadows my life.

  2. Last 5 characters: Human magic-user; Human cleric; Dwarven fighter; and 2 human fighters. I guess I don't do elves, multi-class, or non-core classes.

  3. Clerics, Fighters, or Paladins generally in that order.
When race is a choice, Human or Dwarf in that order.

  4. I usually go with what the dice give me. Sometimes it's a case of "we need a fighter", so I'll make it a memorable and remarkable fighting man from what I've rolled (like Brokk the Dwarf Barbarian). I must admit I've enjoyed playing Elves - either with spell or sword (or both). I have an 8th level Druid and I've played the odd Paladin but that's as close to Cleric as I've come in over 30 years of gaming. They make great NPCs though.

  5. Cleric, Rogue, or even better, Cleric/Rogue

Yeah, I play the classic party bitch characters. Years of DM experience rear their ugly head during chargen and I end up making great supporting NPCs as my PCs.

  6. I would say fighter types are my favorite.. Ranger, Paladin etc..

  7. Usually I DM. When I play I prefer fighters or (if playing a game where they're available) Rangers or Warlords.

  8. Ranger/Scout/Archer types-Human or half-elven.

But I am always willing to fill the gap-although don't come plaining to me if I not real effective in some roles/systems.

  9. My go to PC is either a thief or a dwarf fighter. I try to branch out, and will often wait to see what the party make-up is. If there is no cleric or magic-user, I'll play one to balance things out.

  10. Thief, Assassin or Fighter (and maybe Magic-user).

  11. Dwarf or Fighter for me, these were the only characters I ever got over 6th level back in the day.

  12. I DM most of the time, and as a player usually choose a fighter, or rogue.

  13. <-- DM. As a Player I have no preferences but like to try out different classes - usually humans or gnomes. Bards, clerics, druids, fighters, illusionists, and thieves are among them.

  14. As long as I am slinging dice I'll play torcherbearer, which I did one session. Lately though I've been digging a thief/magic-user combo.

  15. No default class or race. I do tend to have characters that are a tad picaresque.

  16. If it's the first time playing a system I always go with the Fighter type. Usually the simplest of the classes to handle why I learn the game mechanics.

If it's a system that I know then I hit up either the Theif/Rogue type or a Magic User depending on the flavor of the setting.

  17. Normally Fighter (since I ceased being a teenager - in my teen years it was unstoppable Elf F/M-U/T or F/M-U/C types), although my current PC is a very Fightery high-STR Cleric. She would have been a Paladin if the ruleset had had that class.

  18. I favor the Swashbuckler type most classes can build this. Mainly I like to play a foolhardy idiot that leaps into danger and wastes little time with tactics or diplomacy.

  19. I'm usually DMing, but my go-to class is cleric, followed by monk and paladin. Clerics automatically have some backstory and some attachments to what's going on in the world.

  20. I tend towards tough-guy characters. Barbarians are probably my most common choice.

My first proper character was a Tough Hero in Modern D20, who ended up with about 70 HP at third level.

  21. A bit of everything, but I've probably played more Magic Users than anything else. In the few Flailsnails games I've hopped into on G+ I've been playing Bob the confused, with his noble chicken Larry.
