The discussions about halflings and gnomes has reinforced the idea that there is some push back against some of the "non-classic" fantasy races. I can understand why, even if I don't fully agree with it, but it got me thinking about my favorite "non-classic" fantasy race - Wolfen from the Palladium RPG.
Somehow the idea of wolflike humanoids that are organized enough to create their own empire strikes a cord in me. I really should write up a OSR styled conversion - Wulfs maybe, so big Kev doesn't get all up in arms ;)
What's your favorite?
What't your least favorite? (that would be Dragonborn for me - don't ask why, there is no rational reason)

Lejendary Adventures had its heyday from 1999 to 2008 or so. Not bad when
you think about it. The game had its own problems (a lot of problems), but

I'll see your Two-weapon fighting Halfling, and raise two more weapons.
I rather dig on tieflings a bit. I also liked Lupins, back in the day.
ReplyDeletehackMaster Gnomelings. true, they mainly exist for comic effect, but I do have a soft spot for the little buggers.
ReplyDeleteTortles from "The Savage Coast" were interesting. Also dug the Lupines. In fact you could happily run a Savage Coast Campagne using classic D&D races, Humans only, or only Savage Coast races.
ReplyDeleteThe Phraints from Arduin have always seemed pretty cool to me. I've never had a chance to play one.
ReplyDeleteI once played a Marshwiggle Cleric in a 3.5 campaign. My friend and I didn't have much idea of what we were doing when we were trying to patch that race together, but it was fun.
I quite like warforged, although I'm not sure the idea has been explored as well as it could be. I also like Warhammer's halflings, creatures designed by ancient space frogs to be resistant to Chaos but are a bit rubbish at everything else. I do have to say that I am rather fond of RuneQuest's ducks, if only for the audacity.
ReplyDeleteI have become quite found of insect-humanoid races, if only for the strangeness factor.
ReplyDeleteGnomes I have never managed to get a good handle on, though Pathfinder has managed to make them interesting.
Given how much I liked both Planescape and Spelljammer, I've got a strong preference for tieflings and aasimar as well as the hippo-like giff and lizard men, who were the only additional race option in the original Spelljammer set. I've liked minotaurs as a playable option, too(sometimes).
ReplyDeleteMonkeys. Any sort of ape race. The Hadozee, from spelljammer--gliding space apes trained on pirate ships.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to answer with minotaurs - I think it's partially the Mediterranean flavor as opposed to the Northern taste of elves, dwarves, etc.
ReplyDeleteRunequest Ducks are awesome. I've been partial to Lizardmen since I read Doomfarers of Coramonde...
