Free OSR - CC1 Creature Compendium (New Big Dragon Games)

Somehow, I missed Rich LeBlanc's (New Big Dragon Games) Creature Compendium being priced at PWYW. At this price, it should be in every GM's toolkit for old-school / OSR gaming. Written for B/X AND 1e, it's a perfect fit for OSE, DragonSlayer, OSRIC, Swords & Wizardry, the original rules, and beyond.

Sample creature with stat block:

Remember those flashes of inspiration that electrified your brain when you first picked up that hardback volume of monsters all those years ago?

The countless nights you sat up thinking of how to use those monsters, where to put them, and when your players would meet them? Those unceasing waves of joy that swam over you and your players as you unleashed those creatures, critters, beasts, and behemoths upon their characters?

Collected herein are over 200 monsters from Abysmal to Zathoa, instilled with that same spirit, presented in a “dual-stat” format, and designed to be used with most early editions of the world’s original role-playing game and comparable retro-clones.

OSR Christmas Day 4: "One of Everything" Bundle from New Big Dragon Games Unlimited

OSR Christmas Day 4: "One of Everything" Bundle from New Big Dragon Games Unlimited
I *just* read yesterday's 12 Days of OSR Christmas post and thanks Erik....no pressure ("tomorrow is going to be, quite likely, the most amazing day of OSR Christmas gifting in ALL of the years I've hosted OSR Christmas").

You see, Erik gave me permission, back in June during NTRPG, to basically call dibs on one of the OSR Christmas Days here at the Tavern and let me basically "go nuts". Hmm.....what to do, what to do. Well for me the answer is/was easy: show some love to a publisher I know and like buy (pun intended) getting basically one of everything to give away.

Disclaimer: I consider Richard LeBlanc, Jr (New Big Dragon Games Unlimited) a good friend and he's my bi-weekly game GM. At the NTRPG con I was helping out at his booth and this idea came up, mostly because I enjoy project mash-up between friends.

.....anyway, the Tavern acquired "one of everything" that Richard/New Big Dragon Games Unlimited had and the pile has been sitting on my D&D display case for six months now waiting for today. I'm not sure how to organize the "goods", so I'll go alphabetically by Product ID. For those of you interested in these products but not fortunate enough to win them, I'll provide a link to how/where you can get your hands on them if you desire (and with the current price as of this posting, if available).

AX1 D30 DM Companion

AX1 D30 DM Companion: The d30 DM Companion is an indispensable aid for any DM that wants to keep on top of his game and ahead of his players. Whether stocking a dungeon, looking to breathe new life into a campaign, or just struggling to keep up with players, this compilation of d30-based mechanics, charts, and tables will support and simplify the role of the DM/GM at the tabletop. Inside these 30-something pages you'll find a host of d30-based resources. Lulu $10.95

CC1 Creature Compendium

CC1 Creature Compendium:
Collected herein are over 200 monsters from Abysmal to Zathoa, instilled with that same spirit, presented in a "dual-stat" format, and designed to be used with most early editions of the world's original role-playing game and comparable retro-clones.

I did a review of CC1 on my Frugal GM blog back when it came out in 2015.

Needless to say, I'm a fan. Lulu $10.95

Creature Compendium Special Editions

CCS 1, CCS 2, CCS 3 Creature Compendium Special Editions 1, 2, & 3:
Ok, the picture isn't quite accurate to the product as this was intended to be a four-volume set and only the first three volumes were printed in time for North Texas RPG Con 2021. The title page is marked on the bottom with "This pre-release edition has been specially printed for NTRPGCon 2021". There isn't a fourth mini volume, and there won't be as the final product is now an integrated single book. Not available for sale

Dragon Horde Volume II, Issue 1 Wherein Evil Lies

Dragon Horde Volume II, Issue 1 Wherein Evil Lies:
Part zine, part mini-splat book, Wherein Evil Lies includes a host of evil and undead resources for classic/BX editions... 3 new classes; 9 new spells; 6 new magic items; 7 new basic psionic abilities; 6 new monsters; optional rules for killing vampires; new petty god & minion; an adventure for 5-7 characters of 3rd-5th level; and 3 new d30 tables. Lulu $6.00

FX1 Fifty Fiends

FX1 Fifty Fiends:
Collected herein are 50 fiends from the darkest reaches of the outer planes, including the Abyss, Hell, Naraka, Pandemonium, Limbo, the Dreamlands, and the Beyond (a terrifyingly remote place of madness, aberration, entropy, and pure chaos. This book is designed for use with classic (BX/BECMI/LL) editions of the world’s original role-playing game and with Old School Adventures™ Accessory PX1: Basic Psionics Handbook. It additionally provides information on dual-axis alignment, the planes of existence, languages spoken throughout the planes, and descriptions for a number of planes- and fiend-related spells and magic items. Lulu $9.95

GM1 Game Masters Screen & GM2 Basic Psionics GM Screen

GM1 Game Masters Screen: The most comprehensive GM screen resource ever created for classic (BX) editions of the original RPG and comparable retro-clones. This has seven "pages" of content and five art panels, all full of good stuff, BUT.......pretty much out of print. More than likely this rather popular product will come back in reprint, but for now, the best you can do is a PDF product from DTRPG $10.

GM2 Basic Psionics GM Screen: This is another one of those rarer, good-luck finding it anywhere items. It isn't available on Lulu, DTRPG, or really even on the NBDGU Website.

PX1 Basic Psionics Handbook
PX1 Basic Psionics Handbook:
Unleash the powers of the mind into your BX/LL campaign! Finally, after 40 years of waiting, there’s a psionics system for the classic editions of the world’s original fantasy role-playing game. It’s simple, intuitive, and provides a gameplay experience that feels at home alongside the original rules of the game.

Now I've never used Psionics and I know a LOT of GMs tend to shy away from using Psionics for several reasons, primarily because the likelihood of having legitimate Psionic characters (one than qualifies and manages to become Psionic anyway) was practically impossible. I've had quite a few people tell me that this Psionic supplement fixes the original OSR Psionics and makes Psionics viable. I still haven't played it myself.....yet. Lulu $10.95

VA1 Valley of the Five Fires

VA1 Valley of the Five Fires:
This fantasy setting & adventure module is for characters level 4-9 and is a 3 Castles Award winner. This Mongol-inspired module is designed for use with 0e/1e/BX and compatible retro-clones in a single edition. It supports sandbox-style play but includes several traditionally detailed adventures. Lulu $10.95

PA1 Vault of the Faceless Giants
PA1 Vault of the Faceless Giants: This OSR adventure is for levels 1-3 and is designed as an introductory psionics adventure using the Basic Psionics Handbook. (Note that on some places this might be listed as a levels 4-6 adventure, but I double-checked and it clearly says 1-3 inside) Centuries ago, a temple set in the side of a cliff a few miles northwest of the village of Phoumi Sramol acted as the center of worship for evil adherents to the demon lord Rahb. During this time, livestock died, villagers disappeared, and plagues befell the area. Suddenly, however, all of the evil and suspicious activity around the temple ceased. Now, hundreds of years later, an occurrence in the village has the locals questioning whether or not the evil is returning. A local woman, Kanya, claims her baby was snatched from her hands in the middle of the night by followers of Rahb. The chief dismisses the temple’s relationship to the missing child, suggesting the tale is a fabrication. If she is telling the truth, then there is much to be feared, and her story bears investigating—not just for the sake of the woman and the village, but for the sake of a world where this kind of evil can exist. Lulu $9.95

Comment below and Erik will do his thing and figure out who gets this package. I'm assuming he'll forward me the winner's deets so I can mail off the items. Now I can't add any rules to this giveaway, but if you have the ability to oblige me, comment your experience with New Big Dragon Games Unlimited, especially if you've used the psionics stuff 'cause I'm thinking I'd like to run a psionics PC sometime.

But of course, there is more! (this is Tenkar BTW)

Please note, the above is shipping to a US address only. I would need to return to employment to afford to ship such internationally.

We are also gifting the following:

Emperors Choice Games and Miniatures is giving away Volumes IV through IX of Arduin (six books!), in print, to one lucky gift receiver (US ONLY for this package)

MCC "Seekers of the Un-K'Nown" PDF (anywhere in the world)

New Release - FX1 Fifty Fiends from New Big Dragon Games Unlimited

I am a huge fan of New Big Dragon Games. Rich LeBlanc bleeds OSR, B/X in particular. Fifty Fiends is a bargain and a half for a buck :)
Extra-planar beings come in many forms, and for outsiders hailing from the lower planes, almost every one of them comes in some shade of evil.
From the vicious malevolence of the demons of the Abyss, to the merciless schemes of the devils of Hell, to the psychopathic sadism of the yamadutas of the Naraka, the planes provide an unending parade of cruelty, immorality, corruption, and depravity.
Collected herein are 50 fiends from the darkest reaches of the outer planes, including the Abyss, Hell, Naraka, Pandemonium, Limbo, the Dreamlands, and the Beyond (a terrifyingly remote place of madness, aberration, entropy, and pure chaos.)
This book is designed for use with classic (BX/BECMI/LL) editions of the world’s original role-playing game, and with Old School Adventures Accessory PX1: Basic Psionics Handbook. It additionally provides information on dual-axis alignment, the planes of existence, languages spoken throughout the planes, and descriptions for a number of planes- and fiend-related spells and magic items.

Creature Compendium on Sale for a Buck (New Big Dragon Games - OSR)

I am a HUGE fan of everything +Richard LeBlanc has released under his New Big Dragon Games banner, and the Creature Compendium is no exception.

A bargain when it was 2 bucks, on sale for a single buck is insane.

If you don't already have a copy, now is the time to grab one.
Remember those flashes of inspiration  that electrified your brain when  you first picked up that hardback volume  of monsters all those years ago?
The countless nights you sat up thinking of how to use those monsters,  where to put them, and when your players would meet them? Those unceasing  waves of joy that swam over you and your players as you unleashed  those creatures, critters, beasts and behemoths upon their characters?

Reminder - Classic Edition GM Screen - Less than 20 hours Left to Back

Normally I'd give this a mention with the weekly Kickstarter Roundup, but as the clock is ticking it's time for me to send a reminder. I've held the prototype (last June) and it was good. It's also a testament to the amount of time put into getting this project right. Remember, you can back for everything in PDF for as little as 7 bucks - Tenkar

+Richard LeBlanc is one of my favorite creators in the OSR corner of the hobby. His D30 Sandbox Companion is THE go to product on my gaming shelf when I'm short on adventure ideas. Rich knows his gaming stuff, knows his art, knows his layout... yes, he simply knows his shit and it shows.

Rich's New Big Dragon Games Unlimited is running a Kickstarter for a Classic Edition GM ScreenIt's what you see above. I actually got to handle a beta version of the screen last June at NTRPG Con and I was very impressed. I can only imagine how much nicer it is with 8 more months of development.

But wait. Your not just getting 2 3-panel GM screens:

6-panel (12-page) BX Game Masters Screen (in two 3-panel pieces)

This is the most comprehensive GM screen ever created for BX editions of the original RPG and comparable retro-clones. The inside and outside faces of each screen will be printed on 15 pt. cover stock, and glued together to create 30 pt. thickness!!! Additionally, the entire screen will be protected with a UV coating for resistance to abrasion and staining. The exterior of this 6-panel (12-page) screen features artwork by the legendary artist Arthur Rackham, and content panels include all the pertinent information any Classic (BX/LL) GM needs to run their game, including:

-Experience point & spell level progressions for each character class
-Class-based combat & saving throw tables
-Class abilities & attribute adjustments
-Tables for Clerical turning and Thieves' abilities
-Variable damage by weapon; missile fire ranges; AC by armor type
-Step-by-step outlines for both turn sequence & combat sequence
-A simplified Treasure Types table
-Comprehensive cost lists for weapons, equipment, and animals
-Complete movement information (including dungeon, wilderness, airborne, and encumbered movement)
-Henchmen/hirelings, mercenaries & specialists (recruitment, requirements, salaries, and abilities)
-8-page GM Table Reference Document: This 8-page letter-sized piece includes all of the tables from the GM screens in a handle table-ready format. Features additional cover art by Arthur Rackham. Printed on a 60# uncoated cover stock and saddle-stitched.

8 Individual Card Stock Master Character Sheets (1 Generic Sheet + 7 Class-specific Sheets): Each of the 7 class-specific character record sheet contains the most pertinent information each player needs (e.g., notes on which types of weapons & armor may be used by the class, additional experience earned based on prime requisites, and special abilities like clerics' turning and thieves' abilities). In addition to the 7 classic character class sheets (cleric, dwarf, elf, fighter, halfling, magic-user, and thief), an 8th "generic" sheet is usable by any character class. Printed on an 80# uncoated cover stock.

Spells Record Sheet: This record sheet is usable by any spellcasting PC, and includes places to list each known spell's name, range, duration, and area of effect, as well as other pertinent notes. Printed on an 80# uncoated cover stock.

Character Record Log: This record sheet provides a place to write the information a GM needs for up to 6 PCs or NPCs, including the basics (name, class, hp, level, AC, etc.) as well as ability scores, saving throws, equipment/inventory, and other notes. Printed on an 80# uncoated cover stock.

4-page Cleric Spell Handout: The cover of this digest-sized piece notes spells gained by level, and the inside includes all the key information (e.g., range, duration, spell notes, etc.) for all the cleric spells contained in the classic red and blue rule books (plus a few additional core spells from other early editions). Printed on a 60# uncoated cover stock.

8-page Magic-user Spell Handout: The cover of this digest-sized piece notes spells gained by level, and the inside includes all the key information (e.g., range, duration, spell notes, etc.) for all the magic-user spells contained in the classic red and blue rule books (plus a few additional core spells from other early editions). Printed on a 60# uncoated cover stock and saddle-stitched.

That's a lot of stuff for your $43 investment and you get it all in PDF too. If print isn't your preferred media (or if your budget is tight) you can get the total package in PDF for a mere 7 bucks.

Creature Compendium only 1 Measly Buck (0e/1e - limited time - PDF)

Has New Big Dragon Games ever released a product that was less than excellent? I think not.

200 creatures for a buck? That's half a cent a monster.

The Creature Compendium is on sale right now for 1 (one) small (inconsequential) buck (dollar) in PDF. Do yourself a favor if you don't already own a copy - grab it now!
Remember those flashes of inspiration

Free OSR Adventure - Vault of the Faceless Giants (New Big Dragon Games)

Vault of the Faceless Giants is +Richard LeBlanc 's (New Big Dragon Games) free release for use with their Basic Psionics Handbook, which is itself a supplement to Labyrinth Lord (but usable with just about any classic / OSR ruleset with minimal work.)

Vault of the Faceless Giants isn't in it's final state, therefore it's considered a "beta" and is currently free. If you grab it when it's free, you'll get all the updates to the file, even the final ones. So, the "free" part is time limited. Grab it while you can ;)

Although designed for use with the Basic Psionics Handbook, it can be used without with minor modifications. Vault of the Faceless Giants is a solid, low level adventure.

Free OSR - PX2 Extra: Planar Primer

I've yet to come across a release from New Big Dragon Games ( +Richard LeBlanc ) that I haven't found immensely useful and a bargain for the price paid. The fact that Rich is giving the Planar Primer away for free is awesome. Some may dismiss it as only 7 pages long. Those 7 pages hold more useful Planar information than some 128 page books.

Did I mention the Planar Primer is free? It's also pretty much edition neutral. It might say BX / LL on the tin but the inside is pretty much game mechanic free and what game mechanics are there apply across rulesets (I can't speak for 4e, but then again, I never have ;)

Grab a copy of the Planar Primer. Study the Schematic of the Planes. I'm working on something in my head referencing it and you may be quizzed on a later post ;)

Just imagine if the Barrowmaze was below all this...

New Big Dragon Games releases Basic Psionics Handbook (Mind Powers that Don't Cloud the Mind)

If there was one part of the AD&D 1e ruleset that never made much sense to me (there was more than one actually, but this was probably the worst) was the Psionics Rules section. It didn't follow the rest of the AD&D rules in flavor or mechanics. They felt shoved in, not even tacked on. We tried to use them and never could really figure out how to make them mesh with the core rules.

+Richard LeBlanc has found a way to bring psionics to the common gamer with the Basic Psionics Handbook. It looks very usable with a quick glance through (and if Rich's previous works are any indication, it should be immensely useful.) This is going to the top of my long neglected review pile and has already been uploaded to my tablet ;)

The normal price is going to be $7.95 but it's currently at $5.95. I'm not sure how long the lower price is in effect, so I wouldn't wait to long to bite at this one.

Here's the blurb:
Unleash the powers of the mind into your BX/LL campaign!
Finally, after 40 years of waiting, there’s a psionics system for the classic editions of the world’s original fantasy role-playing game. It’s simple, intuitive, andprovides a gameplay experience that feels at home alongside the original rules of the game. Within this jam-packed 56-page book, you’ll find:
a simple, easy-to-play psionics system, tailor-made for classic versions of the world’s first role-playing game
2 complete BX/LL character classes—the mystic and the monk—specifically designed to support the system
support for basic and expert player levels
an easy-to-use psionic combat system based on the classic attack and defense modes

New Big Dragon Games Unlimited to Publish Steve Marsh's Shattered Norns #1: Into the Shadows

Yeah, I'm nearly a week behind in sharing this announcement. As much as I'm adjusting to working overnights, I'm not adjusting to working overnights ;)

New Big Dragon Games Unlimited is going to publish Steve Marsh's Shattered Norns #1: Into the Shadows. It's being published for 5e (and who says you need a license to publish for the latest edition anyway?) although it was developed with earlier editions. Not surprising for the man who was the lead editor of the D&D Expert set and the main man behind the aquatic creatures in the AD&D Monster Manual.

What does that mean for us, the consumers? 5e is pretty easy to convert to earlier editions and with New Big Dragon Games behind the project, it should be a good one.

Something tells me this deal was worked out during NTRPG Con 2015...

Here's the full press release.

White Star Regains #1 Spot at RPGNow - Talk About Long (Virtual) Shelf Life

+James Spahn 's White Star RPG has crawled back to the #1 Hottest Title over at RPGNow. It's been unseated a handful of times but always seems to reagins the spot. Green Ronin's Fantasy Age (I want to call this a generic fantasy version of Dragon Age, but I suspect that is a simplification) is the most recent title to bump White Star, only to lose the #1 position to the very product it bumped.

Which reminds me. I need to do some more White Star content.

Another product with long life on the hottest sellers list is the Creature Compendium by +Richard LeBlanc , which has been hanging on since early April.

Yeah, I like to point out the OSR picks ;)

Next up - some not to be missed RPG Kickstarters (see, I can do positive Kickstarter posts )

White Star returns to #1 Hottest Title on RPGNow - there Can be Only One!

+Joseph Bloch 's Castle of the Mad Archamge Expansion - Level Three East - dethroned White Star for a few days, but White Star has returned to it's prominent perch ( +Richard LeBlanc you were correct at Saturday's morning panel.) This happening prior to the print release of White Star.

It shows both the strength of CotMA (as the only product to bump White Star in the 5 weeks or so of its release) as well as the staying power of White Star. Both are excellent products.

Consistently in the top five for the past weeks has been the Creature Compendium (at $2 for the PDF this is a steal.) I had it in PDF and thought it was great, then grabbed a copy at NTRPG Con and I've upped that rating to amazing. Rich really does an excellent job with the CC and having spoken extensively with Rich about upcoming projects (both near and far) New Big Dragon may be sitting in that #1 spot before long. NBD has held stat spot prior with the D30 Sandbox Companion and others.

Mini Review - Creature Compendium - New Big Dragon Games Unlimited)

There is so much I want to say about +Richard LeBlanc 's new Creature Compendium, but words fail me. Instead, I'll let Rich's words speak for both of us:

Stats for 0e/1e and BX? 199 more monsters? All for 2 bucks?

So good. So cool.

Why the hell are you still here? Grab a copy already!

Expanded Petty Gods Now Guided By New Hands

+Richard LeBlanc , he of New Big Dragon Games and winner of the 2014 Three Castles Award at NTRPGCon, has recently taken over the reins of the Expanded Petty Gods project. This project is a beast in terms of size and moving part, and if anyone can get this done and done well, it's Rich.

From Rich's latest post:
Okay. This is me, officially announcing that I have taken over the reins on the
Expanded Petty Gods project.
Over the last couple of weeks, as I began to reach out to a few folks individually as well as the OSArtists group at Google+, I know there was some speculation. I, however, wanted to get a bit more accomplished before I made the official announcement. (As stated above, this is it.)
I've been lucky that this time of year there's always a bit of a lull in my workload (I have two big clients whose jobs I get put to bed at the middle-ish of October), which is why I reached out to Greg Gorgonmilk to offer my assistance in taking over the reins (something we had discussed briefly toward the end of this past summer).
You can read the rest at the source, the Save Vs. Dragon blog.

Rich and I spoke about this early last week. He is still in need of some artists to volunteer their time for specific pieces. If you are interested (and really, who the hell wouldn't be) your can reach out to Rich or myself and we'll get you on your path to Petty Stardom ;)

Want a peek at some of the work that's already been done? Ratacus Gant (and two other Petty Gods) can be seen in Underworld Lore #2
