Which RPG Do You Wish You Owned But Never Have?

We've discussed the 2nd RPG you've ever owned and the RPG you own but have never played (and truly wish you did) and now we have the next question: Which RPG do you wish you owned but never have?

For me, that's Space Opera (it would have been tied with Empire of the Petal Throne, but I snagged a copy on eBay recently).

See, back in my early days of gaming, complicated systems never upset me (I avoid them like the plague these days tho'). I always wanted to get and play Space Opera. Heck, I'm not even sure why - it just seemed to be that really great game (based upon reviews from people in my extended gaming circle in my High School and College days) that I haven't even physically held, let alone played a session of. Just heard the stories, and they were awesome.

I see it's available in RPGNow in PDF, but apparently the scans are really poor.

Damn, now that I've thought on it, I may have to troll eBay for a copy at some point.

  1. For me it's original white box D&D, which I saw on a shelf at a toy store back in the day but thought, "Why would I want the old version of D&D when I own Advanced D&D?"

(Empire of the Petal Throne comes a close second.)

  2. Iron Kingdoms. The books sounded so cool and the setting sounded amazing!

    1. Ya know there's a new Iron Kingdoms rpg out now with its own (non-d20) ruleset and it's pretty good I think.

    2. I like the Iron Kingdoms theme... I have a whole group of friends who play Warmachine/Hordes..

  3. For me it would probably be Runequest (the original). That always sounded like a really cool setting.

    1. @Digital Orc - I may be able to solve that for you - you know how to reach me ;)

    2. Yeah, I know you're a big fan. I kind of thought you'd say something along those lines.

I just need to pull the trigger on my next eBay purchase.

  5. I've gotten all the ones I wanted I think. There was a hole with Chaosium's Thieves World, but I've got that now. I guess if I had to choose one it would have to be all the original Judge's Guild world stuff. I have some of it, but would like the complete books.

  6. I had Space Opera. Mine didn't have that cover though.

It's slightly more playable than SPI's Universe, but just barely.

It's not an RPG, but in early gaming magazines there was an ad for a game called Attack of the Mutants. Had a robot with an M-16 shooting mutants

  7. Harnmaster. I've always been intrigued, and doubt that I would play it now, but would love to have a copy and peruse it. It may be tied with Stormbringer.

    1. Happily for you, there are two versions in print. Look for Harnmaster Gold or Harnmaster Third Edition. The former is from N. Robin Crossby (the original designer), and is more complex, the latter from Columbia Games is more streamlined for quicker and smoother play. Both are compatible with each other, and with the first and second editions.

  8. The original Bunnies and Burrows by FGU. No, really.

    1. That's my pick, too. FGU has a PDF version available, but PDFs just don't do it for me.

  9. Monsters! Monsters! - so I just bought a copy from Troll & Toad after reading your post. :)

  10. Killer - The Game of Assassination by Steve Jackson Games. It was a live-action assassin RPG that made use of "deadly" real-world props to kill your friends. Typically played on college campuses in the 1980-90s. I discovered it online in the late 90s but I could not find a copy of the rules at any of my local game stores.

For a traditional table-top RPG, maybe Boot Hill.

    1. I have one of the earliest editions of that. The Loubet artwork is so rad, it makes me wish I went to college in the early eighties.

  11. I always wanted to play Runequest, but it just never happened. Always looked like fun.

  13. Dread and associated expansions - I dont normally like games where your characters get killed but this game sort of makes it pretty obvious. And the angels are just really nasty.

  14. I've been picking them up as they become available as PDFs, but EPT would probably top my list if I found a spiral bound copy from 76.

  15. The Morrow Project, with Aftermath as a close second. Always heard about them but was either unable to find a copy or stories about their complexity scared me away.

    1. Morrow Project is still in print actually. http://www.timelineltd.com/

Currently the webstore is down as going to use a new system for it here soon. But they have an email address for you get more information through. I've bought a few of the supplements from them and can verify that they are legit. Not to mention they just kickstarted a new edition that will be out soon.

    2. Aftermath is also still in print. Google "Fantasy Games Unlimited".

  16. Skyrealms of Jorune.

Though those books from I.C.E. looked so freaking awesome to me: Arms Law, Spell Law, Claw Law....

  17. Skyrealms of Jorune for me too. My mate Jeff owned 3 books & they looked great.

  18. Runequest.

Back in the day I felt it was the "mature" version of D&D. Of course now I know different, but I still never owned it or played it. Call of Cthulhu, yes, but never RuneQuest.

  19. So, is your next question "What RPG do you own and wish you never had?" LOL

  20. I'd say either Rolemaster (which I did play in, just never owned) or Stormbringer (which I have never played).

  21. old dragons had ads for fire land and another with a nazi future with rebel players - never saw or heard anything about them other than questions from people like me

  22. EPT. I didn't give this game much thought until a couple of years ago when a friend leant me some of M.A.R. Barker's novels. I really enjoyed them. I have the Guardians of Order edition, but would love the original. I'll get it one of these days.
