Free OSR - Basic Fantasy RPG (Complete Line)

Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, released for the Basic Fantasy RPG is free in PDF, and essentially at cost in print. The latest edition of Basic Fantasy is free of the OGL and released under the Creative Commons license.

Whether you play BFRPG or not, the complete line of supplements and adventures are free in PDF and highly compatible with the "classic" rules of your youth and most OSR rulesets.

Print copies can be obtained at cost from both DTRPG and Amazon, with Amazon offering the bonus of free Prime shipping for Prime Members.

Last spring, at our annual gathering, I gave collections of BFRPG core rules and adventures to members of my old gaming group

This is the revised 4th Edition of the Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game, a rules-light game system written with inspiration from early RPG game systems. It is suitable for those who are fans of "old-school" game mechanics, and it's simple enough for children in perhaps second or third grade to play, yet still having enough depth for adults as well. With this edition, the game is now released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license.

"Basic Fantasy Role Playing Blog Appreciation Day"

So, last week +Christopher Helton and I got around to discussing the Basic Fantasy RPG. We both remarked that for a very complete, well written and free OSR role playing game, it often got overlooked in general discussions of OSR games. I know I've been guilty of it in the past on this very blog. This is out attempt to rectify that to some extent.

My first encounter with BFRPG was memorable to me, not in the day that I found it, but in the amount of material that was available for the (at that point) unfinalized set of RPG rules. I mean, more free goodness than I had found elsewhere on the net. Quality goodness.

If I recall correctly, the first thing I downloaded was BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign. Yep, I downloaded the setting before I grabbed the rules. I grabbed the rules shortly thereafter, but I was still amazed that anyone could put out such a complete, enjoyable and yet free game setting. If only there had been G+ Hangouts at the time, I might be running a BFRPG game and not an AD&D 1e / OSRIC campaign.

Over the next day or so (as it is already tomorrow in some parts of the world ;) you will find a series of posts from different bloggers and posters on G+ talking about the Basic Fantasy RPG.

This is your chance to board the train in case you missed it before.

All of the downloads at the Basic Fantasy RPG site are free. The books sold on Lulu are at cost. It's a game by gamers, for gamers.

Here's a list of the current posts that have gone "live" (I'll try to update this as the day goes on).

The Free OSR List Mini Review - Basic Fantasy Role Playing Game

The Basic Fantasy Role Playing Game, hereafter referred to as BFRPG, is a clone of Basic / Expert Dungeons & Dragons.  More accurately, it is probably a houseruled clone of Basic / Expert D&D, as it separates class from race and defaults to ascending AC.

Things to note:

-Spells are limited to 6th level spells
-As best I can tell, no race has a level limit aside from the general class limit of 20
-It is surprisingly complete for 152 pages - monsters and magic items included
-Information on strongholds.  Don't think I've seen this in other clones (not 100% sure, mind you)
-Available in PDF and OpenOffice formats, making it very easy to house rule the documents for your own use.

BFRPG has a very active community and a plethora (I love that word) of adventures and supplements free available to add to your game and your campaign.  Heck, even if you play another clone, this is a great community to find quality additions to the OSR clone of your choice.
