Deal of the Day - Bad Things Happen (OSR)

Today's Deal of the Day is Bad Things Happen for 2.99, normally 4.99 in PDF.

Bad Things Happen is a compilation of tables and rules to inspire DMs as well as solo players: using this book, discover what twists and turns the characters will have to face next.

With this 54 pages supplement, generate all the bad things that happen to the characters, whether they are exploring a dungeon, camping in the wilderness, visiting a city or playing with magic. Tables about other themes such as sea travel and weapons are also provided in the last pages.

This book is medieval-fantasy oriented and is meant to be used with your favorite OSR ruleset and bestiary.

This book is divided in five chapters that each contain various tables and rules:

  • What happens when the PCs run out of light in the dungeon?*
  • Serious injuries, dark inclinations, phobia and strange encounters
  • What happened to the hirelings while the PCs were in the dungeon?
  • Alternatives to death depending on who/what defeated the PCs
  • Why is the replacement PC in the dungeon?

  • Illnesses, strange encounters, things that should not be eaten and food poisoning
  • Traps (type, concealment, purpose)

Starvation

  • Wild animals encounters (day and night)
  • Kingdom-sized encounters

Mini Review - GM's Miscellany: Wilderness Dressing (System Neutral Edition)

Tables. It seems like everyone is publishing tables these days. 101 Names for the Tavern Keeper's Wife is probably on sale somewhere. I like tables but they need to be useful. GM's Miscellany: Wilderness Dressing (System Neutral Edition) is extremely useful, especially if you like to run sandboxes as a DM.

See the sample above? The full table is 100 entries. How many tables are there? Here's the Table of Contents:

That's a sandboxing DMs treasure trove of content. Hell, the Folks section alone is giving me about a half dozen hooks I'd like to use and that's from just a quick read.

There's lots of stuff to love here if you are on the improvising side of the gaming table.

Much of this has appeared previously in individual releases. GM's Miscellany: Wilderness Dressing (System Neutral Edition) is a compilation of those releases and some new content, but if you have the prior releases the added value might not be enough to justify the complied purchase.

GM's Miscellany: Wilderness Dressing (System Neutral Edition) is currently $8.39 in PDF.

Testing Tables - Embedding Tables in a Blogpost and Playing With Coppers

Last Gasp Grimoire has a way to imbed tables into a blog post. Mo idea if the link above is going to work, but I'd love to see the tables others come up with.

Of course, I may have buggered the above to shit for all I know. The test is in the posting.

Whether I can make it work or not, thanks go out to +Logan Knight and +Paolo Greco .

Any failures to execute are mine alone ;)

The Sullen Seven - Trying to Find a Use for Seven Sided Dice

I have a huge appreciation of The Dungeon Dozen. It is many layers of awesome goodness. While it it probable many will not use the tables is written but instead use the site for inspiration, the idea of rolling on the table is damn fun.

On most days I don't have ten things inspiring me, let alone a dozen. Seven things every couple of days? Perhaps. An opportunity to use the ugliest die available? It's got to be awesome!

Previously Undiscovered Magical Rods

1 - Rod of Ungodly Godliness - Using a charge allows one to change their visage to almost godlike - causes fear in creatures 4 HD or less. Higher level creatures may suffer a morale penalty

2 - Rod of Minor Might - Acts as a +1 Club - No charges necessary

3 - Rod of Light - a single charge causes the rod to emit light like a Light spell. Two charges will emit Missiles of Light (as Magic Missile Spell)

4 - Rod of Persuasion - single charge casts a Command Spell. Double charge casts a Suggestion Spell

5 - Rod of Fishing - no charge needed to use as a fishing pole. One single charge will produce enough fish to feed four people for one day. Fish still need to be cleaned and gutted.

6 - Rod of Awareness - one charge will allow the rod to be set in the ground. It acts like a sentry for the next eight hours, and will silently warn it's owner of any creatures larger that 6" tall that come within 30' of the activated rod

7 - Rod of Spoiling - when activated, the rod will spoil food, wither vines, rot fruit, sour wine and beer. Radius is 20; per charge spend, maximum 100' per usage.
