New Release - Humans! Humans! 1st Edition (For Monsters! Monsters!)

When word came down that Tunnels & Trolls was in the hands of Rebellion, I was hopeful that T&T would be back in print, fairly quickly. Alas, that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.

I was happy and excited to see that Ken St. Andre retained the rights to Monsters! Monsters! I was glad to see it updated and reissued. Sadly, it didn't cover humans and other traditional demi-humans.

Well, Humans! Humans! takes care of that for you. Humans, elves, dwarves, and demon dwarves are on the menu :) Humans! Humans! is currently on sale for 4.99 in PDF.

This supplement to the Monsters! Monsters! rules written by Ken St. Andre, gives details on how to create, train and equip human characters in the Monsters! Monsters! RPG and also includes how to add special abilities to human characters like vampires, avatars, and other enhanced humans. This book introduces new enhancements for humanoid characters like Professions (similar to Classes), Skills and Special Abilities. Explains training, and gives advice of running Avatar humans Like Vampires, fallen Angels, and other beings hiding or trapped in human form.

Also covers Elves, Dwarves and Dwon, along with guidance for other human-like characters. Includes a list human supplies, armor and weapons (including guns.) Plus a new map reveals where the various humanoid groups live on Zimrala.

Kickstarter - Cthulhu Crisis Comic & Monsters! Monsters! RPG Adventures

A Fantasy Comic Saga which includes Role-Playing Game adventures for use with Ken St. Andre's Monsters! Monsters! RPG.

I'm a huge Tunnels & Trolls and Monsters! Monsters! fan. The system works extremely well for solos, one on one, and small group sessions and campaigns. The Cthulhu Crisis Comic & Monsters! Monsters! RPG Adventures Kickstarter is a "must-back" for me.

What's in this Kickstarter:  As many of you know, we like to try new ways of creating stories and adventures; this time we have something very special! Tunnels & Trolls/M!M! creator Ken St. Andre, comic/gaming artist Steven Crompton, and wrestling promoter Chris Perguidi have joined forces to create Five combined comic and rpg adventures that can be read like a comic and used for running rpg adventures with the Monsters! Monsters! role-playing game. One of the 5 books is a solitaire adventure written by Ken St Andre specially designed to be part of the storyline of the comics. The 5th book is a new rules supplement Humans! Humans! that gives more detail on running human characters using the M!M! rules system. We're not sure a project like this has ever been done before! (Certainly it hasn't with any of Ken St Andre's rpgs). We'll also have a new set of standees and a miniatures map that will use characters and locations from the comics - plus some other surprises, including a pledge level that will allow you to own an ORIGINAL hand-drawn piece of art from Steve Crompton's archive!

You can you can pledge for these 5 books in various combinations some of which include the exclusive Humans! Humans! RPG supplement and other rpg related items.

Kickstarter - Monsters! Monsters! Rules 2.7 & Crystal Caves Challenge solo

Yes, Kickstarters have been a frequent theme here, and the scary thing is, each of the ones I've highlighted in the past week I'm also backing. I need to make a list of Big Box Games I'll be donating to ShireCon, simply to make room for more recent acquisitions (I know there was a rumor last summer, being passed around by some that don't follow The Tavern on a regular basis but like to believe rumors, that I was downsizing my game collection due to "financial constraints". The truth was, and still is, I'm dealing with "space constraints", and there's a shit-ton of gaming material that can fit where one OGRE Kickstarter Box is right now. I am like most of my readers, still actively collecting. These donations are part of the current "decluttering" Rach and I are currently in the middle of. It is neither a simple nor short process, but it IS well worth the effort.)

I'm really excited to see the updated Monsters! Monsters! rulebook being released, and spiral bound at that. I'm a licensee to publish under the Monster! Monster! rules, but other events (not the least of which is figuring out how to get Continual Light out the door with the OGL still in flux for the 3.5 SRD) have kept that from getting completed in a timely fashion. Don't let anyone tell you that retirement doesn't have its own time constraints :)

In any case, just like I'm a huge Tunnels & Trolls fan (still waiting on an update as to what the new owners of the ruleset have planned), Monsters! Monsters! is becoming very much a refined T&T "what if" ruleset, as in "what if the system wasn't human-centric, but rather monster-centric?" I'm really enjoying the Monsters! Monsters! rules, and I'm excited to get my hands on the update.

There are numerous options to back the Monsters! Monsters! Rules 2.7 Kickstarter. I'm backing at the "kitchen sink" level, but remember, I'm a huge fan of T&T, M!M!, and related goodness. 38 bucks get you a wire-bound copy of Monsters! Monsters! 2.7, but you can get for less in PDF, or pay more for more options.

What's in this Kickstarter:  We have three rpg books, one is Trollgod's Crystal Cave Caverns and the 2.7th edition of the Monsters!Monsters! Rules. PLUS we are offering a limited edition of the never-before-seen 1976 Zero Edition of Monsters! Monsters! We also have some add-ons including a new set of standees and a new full-color adventure map and a couple more surprises,  You can buy either book separately or get them both at a discounted price.

Deal of the Day - Shub-Niggurath Always Rings Twice (M!M!)

For those that don't know, I am a huge fan of the Tunnels & Trolls game engine, and by extension Monsters! Monsters! It's a simple system that works well with small groups in my experience.

The Monsters! Monsters! community has really been pushing the envelope of what one expects from support material for the system, with stand-alone games like Lair of the Leopard Empresses and now Shub-Niggurath Always Rings Twice. The latter includes the M!M1 Quickstart Rules (currently 9.95 on their own).

Today's Deal of the Day, Shub-Niggurath Always Rings Twice, is normally 9.99, but until tomorrow morning it is on sale for 3 bucks.

An urban fantasy adventure for Monsters! Monsters! Shub-Niggurath Always rings twice mixes lovecraftian horror, pulp, noir and dark fantasy with plenty of hunour. Suitable for 4-6 newly created characters, this product includes quick start rules and brief introduction to the setting.

Some parts of Zenith City are new and gleaming and tidy and prosperous.

Some parts.

Not Spinkwalder’s Yard. Spinkwalder’s Yard is dirty and chaotic and dirt poor. And not even the good kind of dirt that you can plant potatoes in. The thin, black and crusty dirt that gets on your shoes and treads into the carpet. Only you don’t have a carpet, you are too poor for a carpet, because you live in Spinkwalder’s Yard.

But whispers are a-foot. It is said the people of Spinkwalder’s Yard are taking matters into their own hands. That they are dredging up dark and forgotten gods from a time before the light of civilisation.

Are you going to put a stop to this? Stop the meddling in matters no-one fully understands?

Are you hell-as-like. You are going to join them.

Viva la shin-kicking!

Shub-Niggurath Always Rings Twice is an adventure where you get to play the eldritch horrors, rising up against the self declared elites. It is the first adventure set in the noir/pulp/lovecraftian Zenith City.

Includes Quick Start rules, everything you need to play (bar a pencil, paper and dice) is in this book.

Monsters! Monsters! Has a Licensing Agreement that Doesn't Suck the Soul Out of Your Body

Yep, I just signed an agreement to produce a supplement for Monsters! Monsters! (similar enough to Ken St Andre's more famous Tunnels & Trolls to be familiar, different enough to stand on its own). Sovereign Monsters! will be a superpowered supplement for Monsters! Monsters!, written by myself with Glen Halstrom, and art by Glen himself.

Basic terms are pretty fair - $10 upfront and 4% of sales. Besides, I like the system and I'm comfortable working with Ken and Steve.

Continual Light 2e (now a true Second Edition) is still coming, but it does require a rewrite to remove OGL/SRD content, the same position as many OSR systems are in.

Reach out to Steve Crompton on Facebook if you are interested in joining in for some Monsters! Monsters!

Review-ish - Monsters! Monsters! (2nd Edition - Tunnels & Trolls)

I'm not one to do much in the way of reviews, even though many have and still do ask me to do so. The reasons are quite simple, as I feel many others do a far better job at reviewing products than I ever could and I don't take pleasure in reviewing (let alone reading) releases that I'm not enjoying. So, for the most part, I leave reviews in the hands of others, although I do post often about new releases that spark my interest.

The Second Edition of Monsters! Monsters! was released in June of 2020, and technically is not a "new release." Quite simply, I knew it had released, I had my copy in print and PDF and I never got around to reading through it until earlier today. So, technically, it's new to me ;)

First things first, the art is damn good. The cover is awesome and the interior art reminds me of Games Workshop / White Dwarf artwork from the 80s and it fits the atmosphere perfectly.

Ruleswise, you can see the influence of later editions of Tunnels &Trolls on this edition of Monsters! Monsters! We get spite damage from T&T 5.5, stunting, and a new optional rule - Chaos Factor. Chaos factor has a huge potential to skew the power level of the game in favor of the players, but that isn't necessarily bad, just something to be aware of. You get 5 Fast Start Kindreds (and 49 altogether), so your choices as a player cover a large potential of concepts.

Still, the rules are Tunnels &Trolls rules. If you play T&T, you'll find inspiration within. The enclosed GM Adventure (not quite as rare as a unicorn in T&T, but certainly uncommon) is part setting with a large helping of adventure and adventure leads. The Ruins of Hael'Ku can be used for Monsters! Monsters! or Tunnels & Trolls, and should work well with either system - or both.

Monsters! Monsters! is 9.95 in PDF, which I think is a very fair value for what you get, especially if you are a fan of the Tunnels & Trolls rules.
