The Kobold is Dead - Kobold Quarterly Closes It's Doors After 5 1/2 Years

This actually caught me by surprise (thanks to Martin Ralya for the heads up). Even though I had stopped reading Kobold Quarterly sometime last year, as much of it's content did not reflect upon my gaming needs (I'm neck deep in the OSR), it was high quality, professional published and well written. I just don't have much need for 3.5 content (and even less for 4e).

Still, it's passing is a shame. I have my 1st issue of KQ packed away. It was nice to see something rise from the graveyard that took Dragon and Dungeon from us and put their Dopplegangers on the web.

The fact that it survived 5 1/2 years is a tribute to it's quality.

From the KQ website:

It’s a fact that in every fantasy roleplaying game, whether it’s Pathfinder RPG, Dungeons & Dragons, or Castles & Crusades, a kobold’s life is short. They’re wily and quick, but they have few hit points. Sooner or later they go down — fighting.
That day has come for Kobold Quarterly magazine. After five years of publication, Shelly and I are closing the doors on the little fanzine that could.
There’s a FAQ at the end of this post with more information, including details for subscribers (who will have the choice of a full refund or a larger amount in Kobold Store credit) and for writers (editors will contact you about Winter submissions).
That’s the nitty gritty. But as Kobold-in-Chief, I don’t want to talk about that right now. I want to talk about what Kobold Quarterly means to me.
I always hoped that Kobold Quarterly would someday be my full-time gig, but it was not to be. My sincere thanks go out to everyone who contributed to the magazine, starting with our stalwart subscribers, advertisers, authors, and artists. Thanks also to those who bought only an issue or two; for us, every sale was crucial to our continuing. The magazine may be going away, but the Open Design goal of creating new ways for people to publish their RPG ideas will continue.
This is a very sad day for me personally, and I know this comes as a disappointment to many of you. The line on small press magazines these days is, “every issue is a little miracle.” We finally ran out of miracles, but it’s been an absolutely stellar five and a half years with Kobold Quarterly’s contributors, subscribers, and readers.
Thanks for making it more than a “product.” Thank you for making it original, surprising, thrilling, inspiring and quirky. Thank you for making it playable and debatable and fun. All adventures end, and this one has been a blast.
And now, as adventurers do, we will gather in the tavern to hoist mugs of ale and talk about the monsters we slew and the treasures we won. And then we will begin planning and scheming for the next adventure.
Kobolds might be easy to knock down individually, you see, but they always come in big numbers. The kobold crew will keep serving you with free articles, the free Courier newsletter, Kobold Press adventures and sourcebooks, and other projects.
We remain Small but Fierce.
Come to think of it, it's been over a year since the last issues of Fight On! and Knockspell...

Free - Kobold Quarterly Issue #14 (Pathfinder / 4E)

Although I have labeled Kobold Quarterly as a Pathfinder & 4E product / magazine, it really is much more.  KQ is probably the premier, in print RPG magazine available these days.  It covers the whole industry, and even if it's articles are for Pathfinder or D&D 4E, most have stuff that I can steal borrow as an OSR enthusiast.

For the price of free, you really can't afford to pass up on this issue.

Go here for the link to order the PDF.

Free Issue of Kobold Quarterly Issue #11 (PDF)

I got this offer in an email from Open Design / Kobold Quarterly.  KQ is not an OSR style magazine, but it feels an awful lot like the Dragon Magazine of old.  I find a lot of the 3.5 / Pathfinder stuff good for mining ideas.  Offer is good thru February 9, 2011.

Is it possible that you have friends who still don't know how much fun Kobold Quarterly is, and what a valuable resource it can be for their games? Well, tell them that from now through February 9, they can go to the KQ Store and download a FREE pdf copy of issue #11 by entering the coupon code KQ11Gift at checkout after putting KQ 11 in their cart.

If you've been with us for a while, you'll definitely remember #11 --  it had the creepy Ecology of the Vampire, John Wick's amazing take on dwarves, DM Advice from a bunch of game industry all-stars, the Wish spell in 4th Edition, the Spell-less Ranger Pathfinder core class, 4E Paragon Paths for Minotaur, Kobold, Hobgoblin and Bugbear PCs,  and more. Your friends will love it, and love you for telling them. And if you're a newcomer to Kobold, you can add KQ 11 to your own collection.

Mini Review - Kobold Quarterly #15

Yep, time to get back to some mini-reviews ;)

Today we look at Kobold Quarterly #15.  In any ways, it is a direct descendent of Dragon Magazine (may the gods of Greyhawk rest it's soul - yes, the current incarnation doesn't count).  Wolfgang Baur is the editor, and his Open Design company is the publisher.

KQ cover' both 4e and Pathfinder, but even those that prefer Old School will find stuff to sink their teeth in.  It is invariably well written and well put together.  That being said, I find the 4e stuff to be more then I generally want, but I understand why they want to cover both markets.  It's a divided market.  The Pathfinder articles I find much more useful, as they are easier to use with older D&D variants.

This issue includes articles by James Lowder, Monte Cook, Wolfgang Baur and many others.  The James Lowder article is almost worth the price of admission by itself, as its a nice insight into the World of TSR under Lorraine Williams.

I do have some issues with the issue.  Articles are not necessarily labeled for the system they are written for, which is annoying.  I had to read a page of the article on critical hits before realizing it was for 4e.  Pathfinder stuff I can convert, 4e I generally don't bother with.  Shame too, as the article was well written.

My other issue is with the ads.  Ads in a PDF edition of a magazine should be hyperlinked as a default.  Many weren't.  Shame really.

Overall, a very good magazine, if you recognize and adapt for the inherent weakness of covering two incompatible systems.  Excellent value if you play both Pathfinder and 4e, good value if you play one or the other, and a decent value if you are an Old School gamer willing to convert some of the Pathfinder stuff.

The Kobold Guide to Game Design V.3

Kobold Magazine from Wolfgang Baur is probably the best, all around, regularly produced gaming products around.  You can't go wrong with picking up an issue no matter what version of D&D or it's clones that you play.

Wolfgang also puts out a series of GM/DM advice books.  If you want to improve your game, there is something in one of these volumes that will help you.  The latest in the series is The Kobold Guide to Game Design, Volume III, Tools and Techniques.

First things first:  This product is extensively hyperlinked.  After flipping thru TKGTPD3 (phew) for a few minutes via the hyperlinks, you'll wonder why most gaming PDFs don't follow suit.  It really adds to the experience.

In my opinion, the article most useful to DMs of OSR styled game is the one dealing with sandbox style games. Titled -  Buckets in the Sandbox: Non-Linear and Event-Driven Design by Wolfgang Baur, it shows how a sandbox setting can have both order and freedom.  I've always though of a sandbox campaign as barely ordered chaos.  Now I have other options.  Well written and thought out, it's given me some ideas to think about as I plan for my next game.

All of the articles deal with different angles of adventure design and / or game design.  Want to get a head start on designing your own combat system?  Colin McComb has some thoughts.  Need to work on your plot?  Ed Greenwood has you covered.  The list goes on... its a whose who of game designers.

As for me, I think I'll be stealing... borrowing the most... from Wolfgang's sandbox.  Repeatedly.

(see?  I'm working my way thru the slush pile)

Free Kobold Quarterly

Would you believe I got this email on Monday, and it never occurred for me to post it until I saw JoeTheLawyer had done the same on his blog.  So, here it is.  Enjoy, I know I always enjoy the Kobolds:

Do you know someone who you're sure would love Kobold Quarterly, if only they would take the plunge and pick up an issue? Now we have a special offer that you can send them. From now through January 31, they can go to the KQ Store and download a FREE copy of issue #10 by entering the coupon code KQ10Free at checkout.
You remember #10, right? It had an interview with Paizo's Jason Bulmahn, Ed Greenwood's Dwarven Goddess, Ecology of the Hill Giant, a wicked take on Halflings, Secrets of the Halberd, Monte Cook's Game Theories, Rampant Elf Lust. Your friends will totally dig it. And if they become fellow subscribers, you'll be helping to support Kobold Quarterly so that we can continue to bring you great content like the articles in this very issue.

Remember, this special offer ends on January 31! Tell them to head for the KQ Store pronto, and use that code!
Thanks for supporting Kobold Quarterly!

Weekend Wrap-Up

First things first - Go JETS!  Nice game ;)

Now that that is out of the way.  Just got the latest (and probably my last) print copy of Kobold Quarterly delivered on Saturday.  My last print copy because I scored a deal on the PDF only sub, and truth be told, I'm short on storage space and it reads extremely well on the Kindle.  It's a great magazine that covers 3.5, 4e and Pathfinder.  Much of it is more fluff then crunch, so finding material  to crib for older systems is fairly easy.  If you liked the old Dragon Magazine when it was in print, thisis the magazine for you.

On the beer front, I just started 2 gallons of Whispering Wheat Weizenbier fermenting in the Mr. Beer keg.  Should be ready to bottle and carb in about 2 weeks.  The earlier beer still has a week of carbing left to go.  Then I have some blueberry and blackberry beers lined up for February.  Yum ;)

Kobold Quarterly 10 - Capsule Review

Well, I have a print and PDF subscription of Kobold Quarterly and just received the print copy in the mail today and it is a beauty to behold. 3.5e and 4e in the same package. Only problem was when I started flipping thru the magazine... I realized I read most of it already... in PDF on my DX. I downloaded my copy on sunday ;)

I give the mag a steady 5 for quality... you can pick up any issue and be sure that it will be top notch. DX-abiity is a solid 5.

On a side note, EnWorld is loading... slow as frozen molasses flowing uphill, but loading none the less.
