Bundle of Holding - Hostile (Cepheus Engine Deep Space Horror RPG)

I've enjoyed reading through Mothership, and now I want to check out Hostile!

Adventurer! Name notwithstanding, this Hostile Bundle, resurrected (for a second time!) from April 2022, is a friendly offer of the tabletop science-fiction roleplaying game of deep-space alien horror, Hostile from Zozer Games. Based on the Cepheus Engine rules (closely modeled on Classic Traveller), Hostile is a gritty retro-future setting inspired by movies like Outland, Blade Runner, and Alien – a universe of harsh planets and toxic atmospheres – claustrophobic space freighters and brutal industrial colonies – ancient horrors entombed on icy moons – killer ETs, perfectly evolved to survive at any cost. Whether you're a combat-weary veteran or a miner on a grungy corporate star tug deep in the Extraction Zones, Hostile pits you against deadly hazards in an unforgiving void where no one can hear you scream.

This revived April 2022 offer gives you a new chance to get much of the Hostile line for an unbeatable bargain price – an obviously generous and well-meaning gesture. For just US$9.95 you get all five titles in this revived offer's Starter Collection (retail value $48) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete standalone Hostile Rules and Setting core books, the Gunlocker weapons guide (it'll come in handy, trust us), the Cepheus Handouts, and the Referee's Screen.

And if you pay more than the threshold price of $20.36, you'll level up and also get this revival's entire Bonus Collection with eight more titles worth an additional $56 that let you build out your pitiless universe:

  • Three guides to survival on bad worlds that don't want you: Explorers, Dirtside, and Colony Builder
  • Two bestiaries about entities that really, really do want you: Alien Breeds and Synthetics
  • Two hardware and vehicle guides: Gunboats & Shuttles and Marine Corps Handbook 2215
  • A campaign framework well described by its title: Crew Expendable

Deal of the Day - The Sword of Cepheus 2nd Edition

Do you like swords & sorcery, but are not sure if a D20-based system is the right fit? You may enjoy the classic Traveler 2d6 system, but want to try it in a manner that isn't tied to sci-fi. Oh, and maybe you want the system to be open, under the Open Game License (OGL).

Well, The Sword of Cepheus 2nd Edition may be what you want, and The Sword of Cepheus 2nd Edition is on sale for only $8 until tomorrow morning as DTRPG's Deal of the Day (usually $20 in PDF)

A sorcerer blasting his enemies with the power of his mind. A muscled barbarian wielding a flaming sword against the local tyrant’s thugs. A gladiator who freed himself from slavery wanders the land, righting wrongs and smashing villains. Big muscles, big swords, eldritch sorcery, powers of the mind, terrible beasts. From Burroughs to Howard to Moorcock to Italian Peplum films to those dreaming of outlandish post-apocalyptic worlds, heroes raise swords against corrupt nobles, inscrutable sorcerers, and alien monstrosities.

The Sword of Cepheus is a role-playing game in the triple “Sword” genres: Sword and Sorcery, Sword and Planet, and Sword and Sandal. In Sword and Sorcery, often amoral protagonists face vile sorcery and horrid beasts as they complete awesome adventures for gold and glory. In Sword and Planet, humans finding themselves on barbaric or decadent alien planets use their superior brawn and valiant hearts to win fame, fortune, and the heart of an alien princeling. In Sword and Sandal, often set in a quasi-Biblical or faux-Roman world, men and women with sharp wits and strong sword arms fight mythological creatures and overthrow tyrants. The common threads of all three genres are the blade-wielding protagonists who use their brawn, as well as brains, to fight foes both supernatural and mundane and undertake hair-raising, violent adventures.

The Sword of Cepheus rules include everything you need to play thrilling sword & sorcery adventures:

  • Streamlined skill-based 2d6 task resolution!
  • Customizable character generation with 12 archetypal careers for your character to undergo!
  • 12 non-human species with their own careers!
  • 40 unique character Traits to further personalize your character!
  • A wide selection of adventuring equipment and weaponry!
  • Simple yet intriguing rules for adventuring and exploring exciting worlds!
  • Fast-paced, action-packed combat - whether on foot, from horseback, or on the high seas!
  • A skill-based, perilous sorcery system, with 28 powerful Arcane spells and 18 reality-shattering Eldritch spells!
  • Risk disastrous magical mishaps and mutate as vast eldritch power flows through your sorcerous body!
  • 95 terrible monsters for daring heroes to face!
  • A selection of treasures, including a selection of powerful magical artifacts!
  • Detailed Encounter Rules to keep adventuring exciting and fresh, for both players and Referees!

Deal of the Day - The Sword of Cepheus 2nd Edition (S&S via Cepheus Engine)

Many gamers understand that the Cepheus Engine is an open ruleset based on Mongoose Travellers' open ruleset. As such, the Cepheus 2d6 system can get turned and twisted into interesting directions. The Sword of Cepheus 2e is one of those interesting directions, as it turns a ruleset designed for space opera into one more suited for Swords & Sorcery, Sword & Planet, or even Swords & Sandals.

The Sword of Cepheus 2nd Edition is today's Deal of the Day at DTRPG. Usually priced at $20 in PDF, it is on sale for $10 until tomorrow morning.

The Sword of Cepheus is a roleplaying game in the triple “Sword” genres: Sword and Sorcery, Sword and Planet, and Sword and Sandal. In Sword and Sorcery, often-amoral protagonists face vile sorcery and horrid beasts as they complete awesome adventures for gold and glory. The common threads of all three genres are the blade-wielding protagonists who use their brawn, as well as brains, to fight foes both supernatural and mundane and undertake hair-raising, violent adventures.

Bundle of Holding - Faster Than Light – Nomad Bundle

Quick note! Return here tomorrow as we gift the gifts of the final days of OSR Christmas 2024! - Tenkar

I'm still trying to find the "perfect" sci-fi ruleset that isn't too complicated. Until now, White Star has filled that niche for me, but everything I've read about Faster Than Light – Nomad has made me think it could have competition. Based on the SRD of the Traveller rules, this 2D6 system has been well received by reviewers at  DTRPG.

You can get the entire Faster Than Light – Nomad bundle for 12.95 (the core rules alone are 19.99 at DTRPG).

Adventurer! This FTL Nomad Bundle presents Faster Than Light: Nomad, the high-adventure science fiction tabletop roleplaying game from Stellagama Publishing. An evolution and expansion of Stellagama's Quantum Starfarer, Nomad's streamlined and approachable old-school rules support any kind of future space setting from cyberpunk to space marine firefights, free-trader interstellar travelling to mecha melodrama, and the galactic escapades of far-future star heroes.

Nomad roleplaying gameFor just US$12.95 you get all five titles in our Nomad Collection (retail value $56) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete Faster Than Light: Nomad corebook, plus the free Quickstart; three supplements – Mecha, Spacecraft Go!, and Synthoids; and Adventure 1: The Customs Job.

Deal of the Day - Cepheus Universal

The various Cepheus releases have always been top-notch. Built off of the Mongoose Traveller SRD and the OGL, Cepheus has a very active community of creators.

Today's Deal of the Day is Cepheus Univeral. Typically, it is 19.99 in PDF, but until tomorrow morning, it is on sale for 6 bucks.

This universal science fiction RPG allows players and Game Master to emulate most kinds of sci-fi gaming, from time travel or near future cyberpunk, to space opera; from modern-day Solar System exploration to a far future that enjoys antimatter power, matter transportation and food replicators. As much attention is given to low-tech societies as mid-tech and far future, high-tech societies. You'll find options for gunpowder weapons, disintegrators, fusion power, portable shield generators, flint tool production and using beasts of burden. The scope of Cepheus Universal is huge.

The 2D6-based Cepheus rules are adaptable but not complex, and easy enough for players new to sci-fi gaming (or to roleplaying in general). Character creation is purely by design, and features a life path system that adds depth and which connects them to the setting. Create a character in 5 minutes or less.

Packed with material that you can use to build your setting, or adapt your favourite setting from a novel or movie, it includes systems for building not just characters, but starships, animals, robots, vehicles, AI machines, star systems, spacesuits … you name it. Pick the parts you need to build the type of setting you desire. No setting is included, but three examples are provided to give you an idea of the scope of these rules.

Note that the core part of these rules previously featured in Zozer Game’s Hostile and Modern War RPGs. The book contains no AI art. Also available for Cepheus Universal:

Fast Magic - An improvised magic sysyem for use in your setting.

Godstar - A feudal sci-fi setting on a desert planet, full of intrigue and danger.

Player's Book - All the essential sections from the rulebook, for players use.

Street Knight - 80s crime fighting with cyberagents and supercars.

Sundivers - Far-future space pilots compete in the most dangeous interstellar sport.

War of the Worlds - A Victorian campaign pack for adventuring within HG Well's novel.

Academic Specialities - Leveraging Education to create science and academic specialities as skills.

Bundle of Holding - Hostile (Cepheus Engine/Traveller Horror RPG)

If you are going to push a horror RPG, September is the month to do it as we ramp up to celebrating Halloween at the end of October. Humble Bundle has Trail of Cthulhu and Bundle of Holding already has a bundle or two up for Delta Green. So, we have 1930-era horror and modern-day espionage horror, but where is the sci-fi horror? Well, Bundle of Holding has it with Hostile, a stand-alone sci-fi horror RPG built on the Cepheus Engine (itself built off the Mongoose Traveller SRD).

You can get the Starter Bundle of Hostile for 9.95, or for a hair over 20 bucks, you can get it all in the Bonus Collection.

Kickstarter - Scoundrels of Brixton (Traveller/Cepheus Engine)

A sci-fi setting of crime and conflict compatible with Cepheus Engine.

First, let me get the disclaimer out of the way. Jeff Jones, the main man behind Scoundrels of Brixton, did the layout for Torchlight Zero and Torchlight #1, as well as the forthcoming Continual Light digest-sized edition. To say I know Jeff may be a bit of an understatement. Jeff also publishes some of the most professional Zine in our corner of the universe, to the extent that our very own Bad Mike says it may be a disservice to refer to them as "zines".

Earlier tonight, Mike & I had Jeff and Adam Kovac on Talking Crit Live!, to discuss Scoundrels of Brixton and other projects, as well as going off-topic in many different directions. Give it a watch, you won't be disappointed.

Scoundrels of Brixton is funding on Kickstarter for another week. You can snag it in Print plus PDF for 15 bucks (plus shipping), or as little as 3 bucks in PDF. There is even a POD version available to help those who live outside the States.

Are you a referee looking for a gritty science-fiction setting? Do your players crave mayhem? Scoundrels of Brixton injects player characters into a seedy civilization in the far future. A role-playing environment where there's no shortage of action and moral dilemma. A setting tailored for space-going heroes driven to fight injustice, or interstellar villains seeking to launch a criminal empire.

Contents Include:

  • 20 Dynamic NPCs to immerse the party.
  • 5 Factions/Gangs to complicate the characters' lives.
  • 8 Major Corporations exerting influence in the Brixton system.
  • 6 Distinct Districts to experience in Sky City.
  • 8 Diverse Settlements on the planet Deluvia.
  • 7 Explorable Planets to support a variety of genres.
  • 5 Star Systems that set the political backdrop.
  • All wrapped within a concise but detailed setting that's loaded with crime and conflict.

Bundle of Holding - Clement Sector 3E (Cepheus Engine)

Ah. Cepheus Engine. We almost lost the open Traveller clone with the whole OGL debacle earlier this year. Thankfully, Cepheus Engine is here to stay and it is well supported.

Adventurer! This all-new Clement Sector 3E Bundle presents the 2021 Third Edition of the space-opera tabletop roleplaying game from Independence Games that uses the Cepheus Engine based on the First Edition of Mongoose Traveller. Set in a distant space sector stranded after a wormhole collapse, Clement Sector has grown and matured through three editions to become one of the largest and best-supported lines based on this popular open license. Fight epic space battles – explore new worlds – become a pirate or bounty hunter – it's all possible in Clement Sector, and this big bundle provides the foundation for many exploits.

For just US$17.95 you get all seven titles in our Starter Collection (retail value $87) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete standalone 673-page Clement Sector Third Edition core rulebook (2021), the character expansion Diverse Roles, the world and star system generation sourcebook Unmerciful Frontier: The CCA Sourcebook, and four starship supplements: Anderson and Felix Guide to Naval Architecture 3E, Wendy's Guide to the Fleets of Hub Subsector, Pleiades-class Light Freighter, and Roosevelt-class Intercept Destroyer.

And if you pay more than the threshold price of $35.62, you'll level up and also get our entire Bonus Collection with nine more titles worth an additional $123, including Port of Entry; three subsector sourcebooks – Hub, Sequoyah, and The Colonies; and five background sourcebooks: Manhunters: Bounty Hunters, Outlaw, Skull and Crossbones, Tree of Life: Altrants, and Wondrous Menagerie: Uplifts.

Deal of the Day - Cepheus Deluxe Enhanced Edition (OGL Traveller)

Are you fond of the Traveller RPG? Warm memories of dying during character generation 40+ years ago? Interested in seeing what the core rules can become when given to the gaming community under an SRD and an OGL? Cepheus Deluxe Enhanced Edition is what you are looking for.

Normally 9.99 in PDF, until tomorrow morning @ 11 AM Eastern, Cepheus Deluxe Enhanced Edition is on sale in PDF for 4 bucks.

Starships riding fire across the sky. Heroes and villains exchanging laser fire. Desperate spacers struggling against an alien monstrosity. Vast planetary vistas, flying cities, moonscapes, mad robots, and first encounters. In short: high-action science-fiction adventure that stimulates your sense of wonder. Cepheus Deluxe: Enhanced Edition puts you in the shoes of an adventurer visiting distant stars and encountering the unknown. Whether you are a seasoned player looking for a rules-light game, or a new gamer wanting to experience what science-fiction role-playing games are all about, Cepheus Deluxe: Enhanced Edition opens your way forward.

Cepheus Deluxe is a set of rules for playing classic science fiction games. It includes rules on creating characters, resolving actions, fighting other creatures, and engaging in space battles, generating worlds, handling the risks of interstellar speculative trading, exploring new worlds, and many other activities. While designed for fast, action-packed play rather than an accurate simulation of reality, Cepheus Deluxe: Enhanced Edition encompasses a wide variety of rules and materials for building a science-fiction universe and playing in it.

Cepheus Deluxe: Enhanced Edition draws its inspiration from old-school science-fiction roleplaying games. It shares many similarities with these games. Material from older rules sets and those created with Cepheus Deluxe: Enhanced Edition, the old Cepheus Light, the Cepheus Engine Core, and old-school sci-fi roleplaying games, are easily compatible with only a moderate amount of adjustment.

The future awaits!

What's new in the Enhanced Edition compared to the original Cepheus Deluxe?

  • New and better layout.
  • Full color book.
  • Rules clarifications.
  • Correction of all Cepheus Deluxe errata.
  • Many more, high-quality, full color illustrations.
  • Deck plans for all thirteen included star ships!
  • And more!

Deal of the Day - Rider (A Cepheus Engine "Old West" RPG)

The American "Old West" as many of us know it, is, in many ways, our equivalent of European Fantasy. It builds upon history as it was, and morphs it into a history that "may have been". Larger than life. Legends.

I've yet to find an RPG that I felt had a manageable game system along with a setting that felt rooted in the fiction, mostly TV and "Spaghetti Westerns". I'm hoping the Cepheus Engine, which is built off the Mongoose Traveller OGL, will fit the bill with Rider.

Until tomorrow morning, Rider is marked down in PDF from 19.99 to 6 bucks. Clocking in at 356 pages, I have high hopes :)

Kickstarter - Westlands, a 2D6 System RPG Core Book - $1

We're creating Westlands, a 2D6 system sword and sorcery RPG. Get the core book for $1.

Well, it looks like someone is taking a page from the Phil Reed school of Kickstarters. If you price your project cheaply, it will sell.

I am not sure Westlands has reached the critical mass that many of Phil's Kickstarters have, but I'm willing to throw in a buck for a game based on the Traveller OGL.

Westlands, a 2D6 System RPG Core Book Kickstarter can be backed for as low as a buck. You can kick in more if you would like to, but a single buck is all you need.

Menagerie Press is creating Westlands, a 2D6-based fantasy RPG with streamlined mechanics based on the Sword of Cepheus open game license system reference document. The 2D6 fantasy system (Traveller, Sword of Cepheus) has a true sword and sorcery feel, allowing exploration and adventure in a savage land. Action resolution is quick, putting an emphasis on story, not rules.

In Westlands, we've taken the core open-license 2D6 fantasy reference material and are adding extra content, including reworked (more dangerous!) sorcery mechanics, optional rules for simple firearms, and an expanded bestiary.

The name Westlands is a nod to the West Marches RPG campaign style, which is a much more free-form, adventure-seeking campaign where the players decide their motivations and goals, rather than being directed via the game master.

Deal of the Day - Midnight Boulevard: 2D6 Adventure in the World of Film Noir (Cepheus Engine)

I know this may not be a Deal of the Day that is up everyone's alley, or back alley. I just happen to like "film noir", and packaging noir with Cepheus Engine (Traveller) is simply too interesting for me to pass on. Midnight Boulevard: 2D6 Adventure in the World of Film Noir is normally 3.99, but until tomorrow morning its on sale for 1.50 in PDF.

Film noir (“black film”; plural films noir) is a type of stylized crime movie made from the early 1940s to the late 1950s and known for dark and cynical worldviews, usually illustrated by innovative — and often disturbing — directing and lighting techniques. Films noir highlighted social post-war angst and insecurity and featured such tropes as corrupt authority, deeply flawed protagonists, dark urban settings, dangerous women (the “femme fatale”, often contrasted with the “good girl”), an obsession with the characters’ pasts, unflinching looks at human turpitude, and helplessness against one’s fate.

Awright, that’s enough squawkin’ about the pictures! You birds already knew all that — now you wanna know what’s in it for you! Hang out your ear and I’ll tell you. Midnight Boulevard is the 2D6 treatment for getting along in a film noir world, savvy? It’s based on Cepheus Engine and the Original Science Fiction Roleplaying Game, so you already know kinda what you’re getting with a lifepath mechanic and plenty of past careers. But there’s other swag in here too; here, I’ll let the wisehead tell you:

  • A Scar table to determine the character’s inner turmoil and flawed past that affects present actions
  • Rules for drinking — and being affected by — alcohol, a staple of films noir
  • A table for determining the types of organized crime entities the heroes interact with
  • A selection of equipment, weapons, and vehicles
  • Suggestions for running characters through a film noir setting
  • A selection of slang terms used during the period

Okay, that’s enough, pally; beat it, already! The rest of you mugs, what are you waiting for? Grab Midnight Boulevard and your rod and get in on the action before some torpedo beats you to it.
