RPG Industry News - Easter Sunday, 2018

Wow! It's a busy time here in the RPG Industry. Spring is here and oh boy, do we have news to share.

ENWorld announced its latest release in its series of W.O.I.N line of RPG releases. L.O.I.N. will be releasing just in time for Gen Con. When asked by this intrepid reporter for more information on his L.O.I.N. release, Morrus simply smirked and pointed towards his pants.

Gareth Sharka made news with the announcement of his Further West RPG via a series of Twitter postings. Further West will replace the still unreleased Far West for Kickstarter backers. It will be written via a series of 280 character tweets. As Gareth stated via Twitter: "I know I can maintain my Twittering many times a day and I think it will work well for RPG writing." Gareth will commence writing the new RPG after recovering from his latest relapse of Con Crud.

#ConManKen embraced the Easter Holiday at his Little Monsters Games & Comics Shop in Sumerset KY this weekend. Offering to teach kids how to paint Easter Eggs for the small fee of $15 for the 30-minute class (children must supply their own eggs and coloring material) and $20 for a signed photo with the Easter Bunny ($15 unsigned). Walking Dead memorabilia was on sale for 25% off this weekend. In Ken's own words: "That Christ guy, he rose from the dead. He musta walked from his tomb. So, we kinda see him as a kindred spirit to the Walking Dead."

Gail Gygax announced last week that would be a significant delay in the unveiling of the Gygax statue. Apparently, someone mistook "inches" to mean "10' squares". The unveiling of the now Giant Sized Gary Gygax statue will be moved to Arizona dependant upon the GMF getting a suitable acreage donation. Bricks will go on sale soon.

Paizo revealed last week that it felt underserved by the ENWorld Community's lackluster support of Pathfinder 2.0. As such, they've decided to go forward with their own GleeMax 2.0 community, powered by Web 2.0. A source at Paizo stated "If we can borrow from the success of D&D 5e for our Pathfinder reboot, why not snag WotC's failure of a community and see what we can make of that. Besides, we know online. Just look at Pathfinder Online and the smashing success it's been".

No More Critiquing, Sarcasm or Negative Posting at The Tavern

Due to the (minor) blowback from last night's Kickstarter post, we will no longer be allowing the following to appear in ANY posts here at The Tavern:

Critique - while critiquing may have beneficial results for the community as a whole, someone may get their underwear in a knot. Even worse, someone may get hurt feelings. So, no more. Everything is awesome. As an aside, the half dozen or so Kickstarter creators that reach out to me each month for critique and feedback - sorry to be a buzzkill, but I can't help anymore. That's okay though, I'm sure everything is awesome.

Sarcasm - yep, no more sarcasm. I'll just flat out tell you exactly how I feel about something unless its...

Negative - again, no more negativity. Everything is awesome. That which isn't awesome will not be shared, but since everything is awesome that won't be an issue.

As for last night's post - its a Kickstarter about Zombies, so it must be AWESOME!

The Grumpy Dwarf Pees in The Tavern's Scrying Pool

Another April Fool's Day is here. It's time for Grumpy to stir The Tavern's Scrying Pool for some predictions for the rest of 2014.

1 - Fans of D&D Next are going to be surprised to find the 3x SRD between the covers of their newest and latest Dungeons & Dragons. What's old is new again.

2 - Monte Cook is going to publish the "Numasutra". Enough said.

3 - Paizo's Pathfinder will reboot it's core rulebook - 550 pages for $5.50 in bulletproof hardcover.

4 - Disney World will be the next Apocalypse World game. Personally, I want to play Donald.

5 - RPGNow and DriveThruRPG will become two separate companies once again, just so today's announcement can actually come to pass.

6 - The next OSR Clone with be Swords & Lords, a mish mash of the worst of S&W and LL.

7 - Lee's List will publish 100 Lists of Lists of 100.

8 - DCC RPG in Spaaaaaccccceeeee!

9 - Mike Nystul will rise like a phoenix. Mike's Crab Shack and Mini Con will have a fundraiser on Indiegogo. Funds raised will buy Mike a new Winnebago.

10 - Dwimmermount will release. No one will notice. Rats will cry and copper will melt.

11 - Tunnels & Trolls Deluxe will face yet another rewrite. Ken will borrow from Apocalypse World to create Troll World. At least it will still use D6's.

12 - The Tavern will embrace the latest and newest edition of D&D. It will be kept in the privy and read one page at a time. Previously read pages will not be available...

Expecting Some "April Fools" Tomorrow

Every year some RPG publisher or another tries the old "April Fools" scam.

According to ENWorld, WotC is delaying it's usual Monday Legends & Lore article until tomorrow - April Fool's Day. All they need to do is run one of Monte's early D&D Next articles. You know, the ones promising compatibility to all editions at the same time in the same gaming group ;)

In any case, God willing, I'll hopefully start getting some RPGNow credit out to the winners of the first round of the OSR Superstar Competition in the next day or so. My contractor didnt leave the room my computer is in until 915 tonight - but at least we are seeing progress.

Expect the Grumpy Dwarf to take a pee(k) in The Tavern's scrying pool tomorrow. Who know the vision that may be floating in such waters ;)

Stuff Heard Around the RPG Kickstarter "Water Cooler"

I hear Mike Nystul has found a way to fund his previously funded but money is gone Kickstarters. Tomorrow he's going announce on Facebook his plans to Kickstart conversions of Dwimmermount for Axes & Anvils and Cairn. Dwimmermount, The Infinite Dungeon - coming to a Kickstarter near you. Pledges of $100 and up get to design their own dungeon levels for the project, taking the hard work and putting it on the supporters, where it belongs.

I understand Kevin Siembieda is even getting onto the Dwimmermount bandwagon. Palladium Books is going to Kickstart a Rifts conversion of Dwimmermount, and he's already threatened legal action against any that publish their own version of the legendary Dungeon, including the ACKS and LL versions from Autarch.

Far West, the kung fu western RPG with mystical overtones is going to be retitled Far Gone and will be reskinned as a post apocalyptic RPG, to be released after the apocalypse. Apparently that is an "estimate shipping date" they feel they can reach.

Sine Nomine publishing is apparently putting the finishing touches on their own Fantasy "OSR" game. The writing is almost complete. The plan is to ship hard copies before the Kickstarter finishes funding, as this is about the only way to ship faster then they did with Spears of the Dawn. Larry Elmore is doing the art and the Kickstarter is to fund releasing all of Larry's art into the public domain.

Frog God Games is thinking of doing their own conversion of Dwimmermount for both Pathfinder and Swords & Wizardry. The Pathfinder version will be written by Nick Logue, who owes the Frog Gods personal servitude, and will be released in 2 volumes, each coming in at over 800 pages with each weighing more than a small child. The Swords & Wizardry conversion will be a single volume, but will include optional random encounter details (which will be available for the Pathfinder version as a free PDF download).

Will 4e Become the Second Generation of the OSR?

Think about it. The OSR is all about breathing new life to "dead" versions of D&D. The only version of D&D guaranteed life is 3e via the OGL, which is the very thing used to power the OSR.

4e is pretty much dead. All that is left is putting the last few nails in the coffin. It's not an OGL system, so it would have to be carefully retro-cloned, but I'm sure it could happen.
