Apparently The Tavern is the OSR Equivalent of Rush Limbaugh...

Interesting comment from the Ten RPG Blogs Everyone Should be Reading thread on ENWorld from this weekend. Although I do rant (and give rant warnings prior to the worst of my rantings) it far from the majority of the content on this end. Heck, it isn't even a significant minority, unless one includes my Kickstarter posts as rants. Damn, maybe he's upset by my Gor RPG project post. Or the magazine that's not a magazine (although I do agree with Venger, calling it Draconic regularly-updated-post-hub-willing-to-share-profits wouldn't have had the same ring to it ;)

Ah well, to each their own. trancejeremy, we hardly knew ya...

I'm still gassed that The Tavern was included in a top ten list, which is very cool. We're up there with very esteemed company. Check the list yourself - they're all - Tavern included - excellent gaming blogs.

Damn, I guess this podcasting schtick I'm doing on the side really does make it like talk radio.

  1. For what it's worth, I think you could totally take Rush in a fist fight.

    1. I'd pledge good money on a late Kickstarter backing that fight.

  2. This guy must be confused about what the majority of the content on the internet and blogs especially, involves/

    1. here is Jeremy's blog:

      http://osrnews.blogspot.com/

if interaction with a blog could be rated in a negative number...

    2. His blog seems to lack a distinct voice or POV, which might explain his distaste for a blog that has those things. That, and his blog really seems to want to be the go-to source for all things OSR, and he doesn't like somebody else stealing what he believes to be his rightful thunder on the EN World list.

    3. It's alright to have a blog that lacks direction, heck mine is very scatter shot with posts about all kinds of game related things. I have no desire to be super focused and also have no expectations of "competing" with more successful established blogs like this one.
What seems kind of weird is saying a blog is mostly rants when I rarely see any rants on the Tavern and I read it pretty much every day. Has he read what he's criticizing?

  3. I see you as more sinister and less wealthy than Rush Limbaugh, so you have that going for you.

    2. Oh, it is an option, even for civil servants. But only at the cost of honor and dignity.

  4. This might be the sort of post he thinks of as a rant.
It's not a rant, a bit defensive and unnecessary, but I could see somebody viewing it as a rant.

    1. I'd consider just about every blog post on the internet as "unnecessary" ;)

  5. I would say drawing attention to a very benign, vaguely negative comment, coupled with linking to, and making fun of, his blog kind of proves his original comment's point.

    1. I only linked to Jeremy's blog in the comments - not the main post.

      But here's some background:

There was much nashing of teeth by Jeremy when Jason Paul McCartan started his OSRToday gaming news site, as Jeremy claimed such an idea as his own. OSRToday is much more successful than OSRNews. That's not an opinion. It's a simple statement of facts.

My good friend and podcast partner on the Tenkar & The Badger podcast? None other than Jason Paul McCartan.

Jeremy knows what he's doing. Is he entitled to his opinion? Definitely. Am I entitled to put that opinion in the proper perspective? I think so. You may feel free to disagree.

    2. I was unaware of that background. That all frames what's going on here a little differently for me, thanks.

I thought you were just having an unnecessarily mean swipe at the little guy, but I see now there's vindictiveness on both sides. Seems to me a swallowing of pride and working as a contributor on OSRToday, would be a win-win for everyone (including those that hunger for OSR news).

    3. Jason does amazing work on not just only OSRToday but on our podcast too. It puts my paltry contributions to the hobby into perspective for me.

I don't expect everyone to enjoy The Tavern. I expect negative feedback. Heck, I have a negative fan club that trolls a certain other blog.

But when the negative comments come from someone with their own agenda, I have to address it. I tried to initially do so in a lighthearted manner, but without the background explaining my reaction and response, I understand that it may have come off as mean.

Not saying it wasn't mean - just trying to explain the meanness ;)

    1. Not at all Russ.

My comment (and post) was in regards to on of the comments on the post. Someone who has their own agenda (and blog).

I really appreciate you letting Charles guest post. It opened my eyes to a few blogs I hadn't known about recently.

Besides, if a commenter is going to accuse me of ranting all the time, I may as well respond with a rant ;)

    2. I get it, honestly. Seeing nasty or snide comments about you or your work is tough. I really do understand where you're coming from - I see such comments about me or what I do multiple times a day, 365 days a year (hell, there's one above in this very thread!)

And us RPG bloggers, we're not media trained or insulated. We're as small-fry as it gets - tiny parts of a tiny industry. The comments hurt and we tiny folk are not trained to deal with them in the way that a celebrity is. And we see them all, because they're, y'know publicly posted on the internet.

So yeah. I know why you responded like you did. But I think we're at our best when we manage to rise above the attacks of those who should be our peers in this tiny little industry and talk about our shared interest instead. I know I don't have a perfect record in that department, but I do my best and I have managed to never attack a fellow blogger on my own blog yet, despite some fairly extreme provocation!

    3. Russ - 99 times out of 100, I'd pass it up. But as I mentioned above in response to a previous comment (and this post has garnered many comments) Jeremy had an agenda - it wasn't some random guy with an opinion (repeated so you don't need to search and find it) -

      But here's some background:

There was much nashing of teeth by Jeremy when Jason Paul McCartan started his OSRToday gaming news site, as Jeremy claimed such an idea as his own. OSRToday is much more successful than OSRNews (Jeremy's site). That's not an opinion. It's a simple statement of facts.

Jeremy knows what he's doing. Is he entitled to his opinion? Definitely. Am I entitled to put that opinion in the proper perspective? I think so. You may feel free to disagree.

(and yes, the hobby is small enough that most anyone that contributes to it is known by others that do so)
