I spent last nite and part of this afternoon watching Survivor Man. Les Stroud is a modern day ranger. Less of a showman then Bear Grylls, he spends a week in the wilderness each episode, with just a handful of equipment and no camera crew.
His knowledge of edible plants is amazing, and I enjoy watching him build shelters and fires, and watch him set snares and traps for game.
Just taking a few choice bits and pieces from watching the show should add some nice realism to any wilderness trek in your choice of RPG, and give real flavor to any ranger's skills.
Watching on Netflix on Demand. God, I love my Netflix ;)

Yea, I watch survivor man ALOT more than bear grylls. Less would be like " This is molten lava, I think i'll go around" bear would be like " This is molten lava, i'll show you how to cross it" and jump's in.
ReplyDeleteThe bulk of my military career was in support to U.S. Army Rangers and Green Berets, so I know where you're coming from. Bear Grylls is just a little too flash for me to really take seriously.
ReplyDeleteYes, Bear Grylls is the biggest outdoor idiot ever. "There's no way to land this helicopter on the side of this mountain, so I'll have to jump out and roll 300' over broken scree until I come to a stop." Stupid. I'm surprised there aren't a lot of people trying to copy him and getting seriously injured. Maybe there are a lot of corpses scattered in the wilderness waiting to be discovered.
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky enough that the company I work for sends me to an outdoor survival class and a Land/Air Rescue class every other year. The instructor, Brian, who if you've ever watched "Sarah Palin's Alaska" made an appearance on her show -- the one with Kate Gosselin and her brood of eight. Brian routinely sings the praises of Stroud and always warns us against listening to "that idiot Bear"
