Free RPG Day is This Saturday - What Are You Looking to Snag?

So, Free RPG Day is right around the corner. Actually, it's this Saturday, June 17th. I plan to run a game of Swords & Wizardry Light at Legendary Realms in Plainview NY. I should have enough copies of the rules to cover a full table. It will be a short session, about 3 hours. Guessing kick of at 1230 or so - I'll know more after tonight's game.

Now, what freebies are you looking to score?

For me, I'm interested in the RuneQuest Quickstart, the DCC Quickstart and the LotFP release (even if I have no clue what its about). If I had to choose only one, I'd go with the DCC pick - I'm interested in seeing how +Jim Wampler trimmed and cut the DCC rules ;)

What are you looking to snag?

Found an Unopened Ebay Box From 2003 - MageKnight Minis - Perfect for When I Kick off the S&W Public Play

Digging deep into a closet that I never dig deep into, I found the following:

It was unopened, so I had to open it. It felt like Christmas.

Inside, this is what I found:

I never played MageKnight, which is where I think these minis come from (Wizkids on the bottom) but I do recall buying some random commons with the idea of using them with D&D and the like. Nearly 13 years later, I find it. Literally 2 days after I posted about public play being the key to bringing folks into the tabletop RPG Hobby.

I tend to run my RPG sessions mostly "theatre of mind". Maybe minis for matching order. Even while running games via a VTT such as Roll20 and using tools like Fog of War, I tend not to use virtual tokens. I do, however, understand the value of "visual bling" for public play.

I had planned to use some of the Legendary Realms dungeon terrain that I already own for the upcoming Swords & Wizardry public play sessions, but I figured the minis would be unpainted Reaper Bones. Now I'm thinking I should hunt on eBay for bulk commons of pre-painted minis.

Yep, this shall work well for next spring's public play sessions. The owners of Legendary Realms have already given me the green light. We just need to finalize day and time as we get closer.

Kickstarter - Legendary Realms Terrain - Ice Caverns & Terrain Accessories

It's funny. I never made the connection between the Legendary Realms Terrain and the Legendary Realms Game Store until I actually walked in and saw the terrain for sale in the store. It was one of those eye opening moments ;)

What this means is that I actually got to look at this stuff in person and its fairly impressive.

Then I realized something else. I had backed and received some amazing pieces from a previous Legendary Realms Kickstarter a few years back. I had forgotten that the company was one and the same. Nice set of painted terrain pieces (there was no unpainted option, which is cool, because I suck at painting) and accessories. Sadly, I wasn't doing face to face gaming at the time, so it was boxed up fairly quickly. I did unbox them this morning to ogle it all and remind myself I will soon have an opportunity to use them.

But I digress. Yes, the Legendary Realms Terrain - Ice Caverns & Terrain Accessories  Kickstarter looks pretty cool. According to the KS page, if a piece needs to be painted (I'm assuming the basic ice pieces won't need it) it will be painted. I was pleased with the painting jobs from the previous KS.

So tempting.

Why is Ice, Ice Baby bouncing through my head?

Legendary Realms Terrain - Pics of Quick Set Up of Dungeon Tiles

So, I picked through one of the boxes and put a two room dungeon together. Or maybe it's one big room and two small rooms.

In any case, i put this together in about 15 minutes only using one of the two boxes I was delivered. Yeah, I need to put these pieces in something other that Medium Sized US Postal Shipping Boxes ;)

Oh, everything came with the Legendary Realms Terrain Kickstarter, except for the skeletion, which I must have painted 20-25 years ago ;)

Legendary Realms Terrain – Themed Dungeon Rooms "Unboxing"

So, I got it deep on the Legendary Realms Terrain Kickstarter, and it was waiting for me in two boxes when I arrived home this afternoon.

The boxes way a f'n ton! This shit is solid as a rock, and nearly weighs as much. I'm not sure if I would take this with me if I were gaming anywhere but home. At the very least, I'd prefer to drive to my gaming location with these.

The do look really cool set up.

I think I may need to take a file to some of the edges to smooth them down for a better fit between pieces.

Shit, I was hoping these would keep me from wanting to deeper than a buck into the Dwarven Forge tiles, but I may be going in for 2 sets. I suspect the DF pieces will be much more portable. The Legendary Realms pieces will make for some very nice dioramas when I get the living room shelving built.

I also need to get something to stores these in, as I can't get the boxes they shipped in to close again ;)
