Kickstarter - Back to BasiX Issue #12 Fanzine (OSR)

I have every issue of Back to BasiX but nearly missed this one. Somehow I missed Thom's announcement that the Kickstarter was live!

Back to BasiX is an amazing series of old-school zines. I don't care if you missed the prior eleven, grab Back to BasiX #12 now!

Back to BasiX is a periodic fanzine focused on the B/X version of the world's most popular tabletop role-playing game. The zine premiered in June 2017 and ended its initial ten-issue run in September 2019, with an special eleventh issue released as part of a hardcover compilation in 2021. The zine was offered in PDF and print formats, and while PDFs are still accessible at DriveThruRPG.com, individual print issues are becoming harder to find. The hardcover print-on-demand is also still found at DriveThruRPG.com.

This project delivers the twelfth issue of that series.

Product Reviews

In each issue of Back to BasiX, an old-school product designed for the B/X system is reviewed. Covering everything from rule books to supplements and adventures, the fanzine’s creator takes readers through all the highlights of each product examined.

New products supporting the B/X system, mostly from independent creators, are also reviewed in each issue.

In issue 12, we review X2 Castle Amber by Tom Moldvay and New Big Dragon Games's Adventurers Wanted! (a North Texas RPGCon exclusive).

Interviews

Each issue of Back to BasiX features an interview with a legendary creator of the industry, from pivotal authors to fantastic artists. In previous issues, the voices of icons like Merle Rasmussen, Frank Mentzer, David Cook, Erol Otus, and Douglas Niles were highlighted, providing thoughts on the game, their influences, the industry, and much more.

In this issue, we chat with Gavin Norman of Necrotic Gnome.

New Content

Back to BasiX also provides a wealth of all-new content for readers to explore. Each issue includes one to three custom adventures of various B/X levels, as well as original monsters and magical items that are featured in those adventures. Each entry also includes a spell-casting article, taking readers through new and existing spells from B/X rule books.

This issue contains Part 2 of The Lost Recipe of the Drunken Zymurgist, an ongoing story that unfolds as both a playable, section-segmented adventure and a thrilling comic illustrated by Travis Hanson.

Kickstarter - Back to BasiX Fanzine Hardcover Compilation - Issues 1-10 (B/X)

If you missed issues of Thom Wilson's Back to BasiX zine over the past few years, here's your chance to find that missing material. Maybe you missed the zine entirely or like me, you have a complete run but are so unorganized you can't find more than a handful of issues when you look for them on your gamng shelves. The Back to BasiX Fanzine Hardcover Compilation - Issues 1-10 Kickstarter is here to rescue you ;)

For as little as 20 bucks (plus shipping) you can get all 10 issues of Back to Basix in a single hardcover volume. Prefer PDF? A mere 10 bucks get you what you need.

This hardcover compilation combines all ten issues in their original format with a few tweaks to clean up layout and fix a couple of typos. Additionally, fonts were standardized throughout the book. The page size of the hardcover is slightly larger than the original digests, so the font size increased slightly (a half-point). The compilation will be printed on heavier stock paper and, of course, will be hard cover instead of saddle-stitched softcover.

Thom is tonight's guest on Talking Crit with Bad Mike & Tenkar - 8 PM EDT

Kickstarter - Back to BasiX Fanzine Hardcover Compilation - Issues 1-10

The Back to BasiX Fanzine - a hardcover compilation of the initial ten issues.

Thom Wilson's Back to Basix Zine is/was amazing. The initial 10 issue run was one of the more useful zines for my day-to-day gaming as a resource, but for the pure joy of reading it is second to none. Sadly, I am NOT the most organized man in the OSR (that would be my weekly partner on Wednesday Nights, Bad Mike) and my various issues are not collected in a single place. Thank you Thom for solving that issue with my poor collection of Back to Basix Issues. See what I did there? ;)

Back to BasiX is a quarterly fanzine focused on the B/X version of the world's most popular tabletop role-playing game. It was created and printed between June, 2017 and September, 2019, and was available in PDF and print. The PDFs are still accessible at DriveThruRPG.com, but print issues are becoming harder to find.

Across a ten-issue print run, it offers reviews of B/X products new and old; interviews with legendary authors and artists; and all-original content for the game.

The Back to Basix Fanzine Hardcover Compilation Issues 1-10 is $10 in PDF, $20 in Hardcover, and $30 for the signed Hardcover. I'm in for $30 :)

Back to Basix Issue #3 Preorders are Live

If you haven't grabbed and issue of Back to Basix - the zine covering the BX edition of D&D, here's your chance.

Issues #1 and #2 are 5 bucks each.

Issue #3 is a preorder and is also 5 bucks,

Order all three for $12.50. Shipping is included in all cases.

I grabbed a copy of BtB at NTRPG in June and it was excellent. I ordered the three-pack because I can always use an extra copy ;)

Here's the order link: http://throwigames.com/purchase_b2bx.html
As always, this issue will have a comic from Travis Hanson (part 3 of the Broken God of the Crimson Abbey), an interview with an industry legend, a product review, articles on new monsters and spell casting, and two adventures. It should be 16 pages but might creep into 20 - tbd.

New Release - Back to BasiX - Issue #2 (zine)

If you haven't been following Thom Wilson / Throwi Games you've been missing out on a series of solid OSR releases. Easily one of the best bangs for your OSR buck is Back to BasiX, a fanzine dedicated to B/X and similar OSR clones.

I grabbed issue #1 of Back to BasiX in print at NTRPG Con in June and it was excellent. I expect more from issue #2 (which should be on its way to me via the US Post Office as I preordered). The PDF release of Back to BasiX is $1.50 an issue. There are two issues available.
This fanzine celebrates, highlights and supports one of the original roleplaying game systems of the 1980's, the Basic and Expert editions of Dungeons & Dragons.  Each issue will provide or highlight content within the Holmes, Moldvay, Cook and Mentzer edited rules from TSR's Gary Gygax.
Issue contains:  Product Spotlight, Spell Review, New Magic Items, New Monster, Short Encounter, Full page comic "Dungeon Delvers" (artist, Travis Hanson), and an interview with Frank Mentzer.
All purchases made via The Tavern's affiliate links help to support The Tavern.

Thom Wilson / Throwi Games has released their OSR / B/X / BECMI fanzine, Back to Basix Issue #1 in PDF.

I have B2B in print, as it released at NTRPG Con and Thom was nice enough to hook me up and it is very nice. Popular demand convinced Thom to release it in PDF (as the print run was limited) and it is available for $1.50. Back to Basix is currently sitting at #2 on the Hottest Small Press sellers at RPGNow.

So, what's inside?
