Kickstarter - Far Away Land 2nd Edition

A 2nd edition of the Far Away Land Role-Playing Game to celebrate the 10th anniversary and expand the universe of Far Away Land.

I've been a huge fan of Far Away Land since its initial release in 2014. I even participated in a short-lived Far Away Land podcast with Dirk back in the day.

I'm excited to see the return of Far Away Land with a 2nd Edition, and we will have Dirk on the Talking Crit Livestream later this month to discuss the Kickstarter and answer any questions.

As an aside, I LOVE the Far Away Land art. Love it, love it, love it :)

While the FAL system isn't an OSR system, it feels and plays out in an old-school manner.

Core Rules (274 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches)

The Core Rules Second Edition contains all of the rules needed to play Far Away Land including: Basic Rules, Character Creation, Combat, Magic, Abilities, Gear and Crafting, Magic Items, Vehicles and Travel, Treasure, Mass Combat, Sea Battles, Generators, NPCs, Plants and Animals, a Level 0 Grinder, and a Level 1 Adventure.

Bestiary I (246 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches)

Bestiary I contains a catalog of 350 creatures, an extensive Creature Forge for making custom monsters, an Index of Encounters based on level and environment, and the Constructoniomicon for building constructs and golems.

Book of Lore (280 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches)

The Book of Lore contains Maps and Location Descriptions for the world of Far Away Land, Maps and Location Descriptions of the various spheres, Stories from the various spheres detailing those strange worlds, Stories and Histories from the universe and Far Away Land depicting various events and individuals (some on a grand scale and others more intimate), Epic Poems, Short Stories, Timelines, and Lineages. The descriptions and stories are written using nearly 100 in-world reference sources with a variety of styles and voices to further deepen the lore.

State of The Tavern - August, 2024

It's been a good long while since I've done a "State of The Tavern" update, and not only is one overdue, but I have things to actually give updates on, such as Blades & Arcana, Rumble, X, and more.

I've had numerous questions and inquiries about Blades & Arcana (built off of Swords & Wizardry Continual Light chassis and known for a while as Blades & Sorcery). So, let me answer a few of the more common questions:

1 - Why did the name change from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light to Blades & Sorcery to Blades & Arcana?

A1- The name was changed from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light because Frog God Games was no longer the publisher of Swords & Wizardry and I didn't want to cause confusion with the Swords & Wizardry Line under Mythmere Games.

A2 - The name was changed from Bades & Sorcery to Blades & Arcana after editor Tim Kask pointed out that it abbreviated to "BS". When "The" Tim Kask suggests a name change, you go with the name change :)

2 - When does Blades & Arcana Light release?

A - I should have my author's copy late this week, or early next week, and it should go on sale shortly thereafter at the Wizard Tower Games website.

3 - What is Blades & Arcana Core?

A - B&A is built off of the SWCL chassis, without the limits that we went into SWCL with. We have plans to make it a multi-genre OSR ruleset, with support for fantasy, sci-fi, modern, and possibly other genres, either upon release or shortly thereafter.

We've begun to live-stream on Rumble and X, in addition to YouTube. Rumble is also getting the daily content that is already shared on YouTube.

Backerkit - Our Golden Age (OGA): An Ultraviolet Grasslands RPG Sequel

I was stunned when I found Our Golden Age on Backerkit. With a funding goal of 50k, it is currently nearly $350k in funding. Part of the well-spoken Ultraviolet Grasslands series, OGA still has 26 days left in its funding. Holy shit!

BTW, I'm in for the Gold Box at 95 bucks, which includes all of the below.

The Gold Box includes:

Our Golden Age and the Mother Machine — the main book. The heartwood of this campaign. Sized to match the UVG (2nd Edition) on your bookshelf. Illustrated by the author. A4 hardcover, 250 pages.  Also available separately. Includes the Circle Sea Travel Map (UNLOCKED) - a folded road atlas map of the Circle Sea region inserted into the book. Perfect for the leisure tripper!

The Vastlands Guidebook — the rule book, campaign exclusive A4 hardcover, 144 page version laid out by Guilherme Gontijo. Free digital A5 version also available.

Circle Sea Grand Map — a two-sided map. Classical postmodern map on one side, fantascience illustrated map on the other. 22” x 22”, six panel fold. Compatible with the Grand Long Map in the UVG. Sized to fit with the main book.  Also available separately.

Yellow Nemesis Dice Set — an heirloom polyhedral set from Long Ago, before the fall of the Cathedral Order. Including an extra d6 for morale. Also available separately.

Tour Guide's Screen — a referee screen for the GM. Lovingly illustrated by the author with help from tiny space rats with human hands. Designed to help you improvise, pirouette, strategize, and amaze your players. Or just to hide your dice. Also available separately.

Vastlands Reference Cards (UNLOCKED) — Handy dandy cards to keep track of the loose, crumbly rules and locations.

Circle Sea Post Cards (UNLOCKED) - Show your homebody friends how cool you are because of the places you visited! Warning: may include adventure hooks.

Nemesis and Ministry Cards (UNLOCKED) - Know your enemies! Generate your friends. Bonus game included?

Humble Bundle - Free League Immersive RPG Bundle for Alchemy VTT

I'm a fan of VTTs. I've yet to find one that I'm completely happy with, although I tend to default to Roll20 as I have a lifetime subscription to the service, and the rest of my gaming group is comfortable with it.

The Free League Immersive RPG Bundle for Alchemy VTT at Humble Bundle is an amazing deal if you enjoy the selection of Free League RPGs. Core rules, supplements, and adventures for Dragonsbane, Twilight 2000, Mork Borg, Symbaroum, Tales from the Loop, Vaesen, Coriolis, Forbidden Lands, Mutant Year Zero, and Pirate Borg.

Humble Bundle - StarFinder Second Edition Playtest Primer

Bundle of Holding - Swords of the Serpentine For GUMSHOE

I've been interested in the GUMSHOE system for years, but Swords of the Serpentine may just be the entry game to GUMSHOE that I'm looking for. Swords of the Serpentine is normally 29.99 in PDF, but for the next few days, it is on sale for 7.95, along with a Quickstart adventure.

Swords of the Serpentine is a sword & sorcery game of daring heroism, sly politics, and bloody savagery, set in a fantasy city rife with skullduggery and death. The rules adapt the GUMSHOE investigative roleplaying system to create a fantasy RPG with a focus on high-action roleplaying and investigation inspired by the stories of Fritz Leiber, Terry Pratchett, Robert E. Howard, and others.

Your characters will discover leads that, if followed, propel them headlong into danger and forbidden knowledge. A lead might point the way to sunken treasure, jungle ruins, the missing key to a sorcerous trap, or the true identity of a notorious murderer. The GUMSHOE game mechanics ensure that you’ll always notice leads if you look for them. It’s up to you to choose which one you'll follow into whatever perils lie ahead, in hopes of fortune, glory, justice, or just staying alive another day.

If you want to track down foul sorcerers in a corrupt and decadent city, clamber through underground ruins to sneak into an enemy’s home and rob them, or wage a secret war against a rival political faction, you’re in the right place.

Swords of the Serpentine offers:

  • A fantasy city of mystery and magic inspired by Lankhmar and Ankh-Morpork
  • Tools for fast and effective character creation
  • A customized combat system that opens the door for cinematic, heroic battles
  • Social combat that targets your enemy's morale, letting you defeat some foes through wit, guile, and threats
  • Sorcery that allows you to rip apart a tower with the flick of a hand—but are you willing to pay the price in corruption to body and soul?
  • Powerful allegiances that give you influence in one or more factions across the city, but which can earn you equally powerful enemies...
  • Streamlined abilities that power four distinct types of heroes, and which you can mix-and-match across professions to customize your character further
  • Gameplay and rules mechanics that encourage players to help build the world they're adventuring in
  • Rules for death curses, true names, alchemy, sorcerous items, ghostly possession, political manipulation, and more

New Release - The Village of Greenhaven (System Neutral)

Alright, technically not NEW new, as it was released at the end of 2023, but The Village of Greenhaven is new to me. But then I guested on Inappropriate Characters this past Sunday night and learned about The Village of Greenhaven. It's exactly what I want for my campaigns - plug-and-play support material.

At three bucks in PDF and 6.99 in Print plus PDF, it's a bargain. I just ordered the Print plus PDF of The Village of Greenhaven.

The Village of Greenhaven provides a complete forest town, including locations, landmarks, shops, NPCs, Random Tables, and Potential Encounters!

Designed to be system agnostic so that you can skin this "Pop-In Principle" to your world, Greenhaven is ready to be the centerpiece of your next Campaign!

In the realm of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), where imagination takes flight and the story told by the dice and your table reigns supreme, this “Pop-In Principles” series of source materials emerges as a beacon for both novice and seasoned players alike. This supplement transcends the conventional boundaries of rulebooks, offering a treasure trove of general descriptions and vivid imagery designed to kindle the flames of creativity, encourage exploration, and propel dynamic role-playing adventures. With its carefully crafted content, this addition to your library becomes an indispensable tool for Game Masters and players.

As a system-agnostic tool, Game Masters will find detailed descriptions of fantastical landscapes, mysterious locales, and vibrant cities serve as the canvas upon which the narrative unfolds. As GMs pore over these pages, they find themselves equipped with the tools to breathe life into their worlds.

Whether serving as originally intended as a “pop-in” or instant piece of setting, quick diversion, or foundation for a homebrewed improvisation on the contents within, this supplement will assist GMs and players alike with developing their unique game worlds. GMs have less prep and can lean on the scenarios, locations, and encounters within. Players, in turn, discover the inspiration needed to envision their characters’ surroundings, fostering a deeper connection to the game world.

In the TTRPG sphere, innovation and creativity are the lifeblood of unforgettable adventures. Use the settings and characters within to brainstorm unique plot twists and craft elaborate experiences for your table’s characters. Hopefully, this resource becomes a wellspring of inspiration, encouraging participants to think outside the box and allowing them to contribute to the collaborative experience.

Bundle of Holding - Ultraviolet Grasslands (OSR)

Although I have heard many good things about Ultraviolet Grasslands over the last few years, I've never snagged a copy. Well, this is my chance to rectify that. 18 bucks get you the Ultraviolet Grasslands full bundle collection. Pretty damn good!

Adventurer! This Ultraviolet Grasslands Bundle presents The Ultraviolet Grasslands, the psychedelic fantascience Rainbowlands caravan pointcrawl campaign setting for Old School tabletop roleplaying games by designer-illustrator Luka Rejec at WTF Studio. At the edge of the Rainbowlands stands the Violet City, the last bastion of civilization. Your player characters, seeking money or ancient secrets, lead epic caravan journeys across the Ultraviolet Grasslands – past the Way Stone Graveyard, the Behemoth Shell, Dead Bridge, the Near Moon, the Cauldron of Revitalized Divinity, and dozens more locations – to the fabled Black City on the shore of time and space. In both its 2020 First Edition (funded in a February 2019 Kickstarter campaign and its 2022 "director's cut" enhanced version, Ultraviolet Grasslands has earned praise for its fevered vision of a dying-earth world inspired by Moebius' Airtight Garage, Jodorowsky, Fury Road, and heavy metal. (And, uh, Heavy Metal.)

For just US$17.95 you get all seven titles in our UVG Collection (retail value $81) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete 2022 Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City setting, along with the original 2020 UVG 1E (previously in our November 2021 Cornucopia 9); the Synthetic Dream Machine rules and the Magitecnica spellbook; the creature generator Zoa of the Vastlands; the Zardoz-inspired adventure Rrypo: Get a Head, and the horror one-shot Let Us In.

Deal of the Day - DRAGONLOCK Lost Dungeons: Master Set (3d Printed Terrain Files)

Okay, time to delve into my background with DRAGONLOCK. First off, I've known Tom Tullis, the bald-headed freak (I say such with only love) behind Fat Dragon Games for nearly a decade. To know Tom is to love him, or something ;)

As for DRAGONLOCK itself, while running convention games for Frog God Games before the year the earth stood still, I ran Mouth of Doom using dungeon terrain from Fat Dragon Games, and it was amazing. It's one of the many reasons I bought a 3d printer in June of 2023 - and no, it's still in the box. Aspiration is everything at times ;)

All that to say, Fat Dragon Games produces some amazing terrain, and I say that DESPITE knowing Tom as well as I do. I kid, but if you know Tom, you have to bust on him, as he gives as good as he gets.

Today's DTRPG Deal of the Day is the DRAGONLOCK Lost Dungeons: Master Set. Normally it is 50 bucks for the files, but until tomorrow morning you can snag the DRAGONLOCK Lost Dungeons: Master Set, which is on sale for 10 bucks.

DRAGONLOCK Lost Dungeons™ is an all-new 3D printable terrain series that is the culmination of our 18 years of design experience in tabletop gaming, and this master set is so complete we even include a dungeon toilet!

All models print supportless and are optimized for FDM 3D printers. This set features our innovative no-solder LED lighting designs that Dragonlock™ first introduced in 2019 (allowing anyone to make gorgeous LED illuminated terrain with no soldering or electronics experience necessary), our new easy-build hinge design for opening doors, 45˚ angle hallways, round rooms with centered doors, our incredibly popular Dragonbite™ link system, and much more! Lost Dungeons™ expansion sets will allow you to customize your dungeon layouts even further with the groundbreaking innovations you have come to expect from Fat Dragon Games.

New to 3D printing? We've got you covered! Fat Dragon Games has a YouTube channel devoted to getting you started in this fantastic hobby, we walk you through everything you need to know to get your first printer, troubleshooting, tutorials, recommended settings, and much more. We also do the hard work for you and provide custom slicing profiles for Cura (a free slicing software) to take all of the guesswork out of the printing process. With full color instruction manuals, custom slicer profiles, video tutorials and build guides, and a Facebook support group with over 13,000 members, no other 3D model publisher provides you with as many support options as we do! A typical dungeon wall can be printed at home for only $0.40, and good starter 3D printers can be purchased for around $180. See our website for more info.

Humble Bundle - Doctor Who Ultimate RPG Collection

My memories of Doctor Who go back to my pre-teen and teen summers spent in the Poconos. We had one channel on the TV, a PBS station, Channel 44, WVIA. Surprisingly, it was one of the better PBS stations I ever encountered, having not just Doctor Who and various British comedies, but later even Star Trek: The Next Generation

My fond memories of Doctor Who only cover the first few doctors and I never watched any later Doctor Who Doctors. That being said, I know the IP has a huge fandom, and I suspect the sourcebooks included in the Doctor Who Ultimate RPG Collection Bundle will be valuable even to those with little intention of playing the RPG.

This is one of those bundles that I believe really only come into value at its highest level, 44 books for 25 bucks (plus a 20% off coupon for Cubicle 7).

Kickstarter - D6 System: Second Edition

The classic West End Games ruleset returns in an updated and licensed new multi-genre rulebook!

Somewhere, packed away, is my WEG Star Wars rulebook. I don't think I ever ran it. Not because it was a bad system, but because my gaming group didn't have any major Star Wars fans, so the draw just wasn't there.

Fast forward a few decades and Open D6 hits the market (essentially the Star Wars RPG with the serial numbers scratched off and multi genre) , with the PDFs available for free and the print core books fairly inexpensive. I won them all, and have played a small amount of Open d6 at conventions, but I still haven't run the system.

The D6 System: Second Edition Kickstarter is 20 bucks in PDF and 50 bucks in Print plus PDF.

Kickstarter - Perilous Pamphlet Pack, a Box for RPG Brochure Adventures (Phil Reed)

Keep your tri-fold 8.5" x 11" RPG brochure adventures safe in this custom storage box! Also includes two new brochure adventures.

I'm a huge fan of Phil Reed. Phil understands the OSR better than many in the OSR do.

The Perilous Pamphlet Pack, a Box for RPG Brochure Adventures Kickstarter has multiple backer levels, but I'm backing it for 25 bucks plus shipping. So, the actual box and some print material.

Tri-fold brochure adventures are popular with the indie and OSR game scenes, and our new box is designed to hold those pamphlets! Designed for 8.5" x 11" tri-fold brochures, this box holds 20+ adventures. (The exact count depends on the weight of paper used for each.)

Roughly 20+ brochures (printed on cover stock) will fit neatly inside this custom storage box. It is designed specifically for tri-fold, 8.5" by 11" adventures. The exact count depends entirely on the paper weight of the brochures. (The exact count varies; you can pack more inside if they're printed on lighter papers than you can if they're printed on heavy cardstock.)

This is an easy way to organize your collection of brochure adventures. And it's rather fetching to look at (if we do say so ourselves).
