Old School Gaming Friendly Conventions - Updated June 2017

Alright, I think we have enough conventions submitted to let the post go live. The idea is that we will put up a new post the first week of each month, adding and subtracting as needs are. If you know of conventions that are Old School Friendly, add them as a comment and I'll update the list - Tenkar

  1. Sigh...nothing near me. Maybe I should just search online.

  3. I'm going to try to hit up Con on the Cob this year.

  4. Con of the North has a strong(ish) OSR presence? It always felt like a OP con to me, especially the last few years (D&D Adventurers League and Pathfinder Society specifically). It's in my backyard though so I'll try to throw down with some OSR stuff next year for sure!

    1. These are ecommendations from Tavern readers.

OSR friendly does not need to mean OSR majority of games, it means (in this context) that there is a solid though possibly small old school presence.

    2. The Gasp Con I mentioned has OSR gaming. They just can't seem to find a place to have it right now. I just hope they work things out with the Monroeville Convention center and Steel City con.

    3. I'm really hoping they can get GASP going again. I've run Mutant Future, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, DCC, Metamorphosis Alpha, and others have run Marvel (FASERIP), Call of Cthulhu, LotFP, Empire of the Petal Throne, Dawn Patrol, etc. Lots of old school presence for a small local con!

    4. They have strong DCC, Tékumel, and space opera rooms that include lots of old school games. The adventurers guild and pathfinder rooms are rather separate from the test of the con. I run nothing but old school and I usually have full games.

  5. MACE in Charlotte, NC. November 10 – 12 2017. Last year there was two AD&D games on the schedule. One was White Plume Mountain and the other was Tomb of Horrors. DCC XCrawl and Battletech also made an appearance. Off the schedule I ran a Pacesetter Chill adventure and another person ran Call of Cthulhu 6e, Castles and Crusades, and OSR crawl through Barrowmaze.

These guys are looking for GM's, so if you want to up the Old School quotient, you can offer to run some classic games for them. Lots of fun last year. Played in a game run by James V. West, author of the Black Pudding 'zine, among other things.

  8. Ack. I was going to add "Legacies Game Day," held annually in Havertown, PA each April but I just saw they cancelled this year's. I hope that doesn't mean it's done.

  11. Q-Con in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
OSR games in nearly every game slot of the weekend.
Consistently the most OSR-friendly convention in Ireland.

    I'm going this weekend. Woo-hoo!

  12. Origins (opens today and running through Sunday) in Columbus always has a number of old school games running in events. There's also a small number of old school publishers in attendance, but that varies by year. Flying Buffalo, Troll Lord Games (first time IIRC), and Goodman Games are here this year. Just about to head down to the convention, but the Dealer Hall isn't open till tomorrow.

  13. There's also MEPACon (www.mepacon.com), in Scranton, PA. Two 3-day weekends in March and November. I've played S&W there (WB and Complete) and DCC is a regular fixture as well. Brendan LaSalle seems to be a regular guest - maybe he's fairly local?
