Free Old School RPG - The Curse on God's Acre – A Free Dragon Warriors Solo Adventure (Dragon Warriors is also PWYW)

I remember seeing the ads for Dragon Warriors in Dragon Magazine back in the 80s. Damn, but the game looked so damn cool. Now, Dragon Warriors is priced at PWYW - both PDF and Print versions. And The Curse on God's Acre – A Dragon Warriors Solo Adventure clocks in at over 250 pages and is ALSO PWYW! Ah, to be young again!

What do you get with The Curse on God's Acre?

Deep in the fertile countryside of Chaubrette, you find yourself in God's Acre, an isolated valley containing the villages of Pernay, Lancome, and Monques. Here the sturdy locals grow wine and keep sheep — but all is not as it seems. A pernicious evil haunts the lanes and narrow fields of God's Acre.

Revealed at first in scraps of children's songs, in the blank stares of straw dolls, in the animals masks lurking in the shadows, in the tangled entrails of a murdered woman ... a witch cult has the valley in its grasp and is squeezing tighter.

Can you break The Curse on God's Acre?

A Dragon Warriors adventure for any profession, 3rd or 4th Rank. 508 entries.

Dragon Warriors'  40th anniversary won't pass unnoticed as long as Red Ruin Publishing have anything to say about it. They've just released the seventeenth book in their series of DW adventures, and it's one of the best. "The Curse on God's Acre is a memorable solo scenario that deserves a place in every Dragon Warriors player's collection." Dave Morris, Creator of Dragon Warriors

Free OSR - Cavern of the Creeping Terror (3rd Level OSR Adventure)

Cavern of the Creeping Terror is an OSR adventure, loosely based on "The Glus from Deltora Quest, the arctic horror of The Thing, and Grendel’s mother’s lair from Beowulf". I can reference two out of three (Deltora Quest is new to me). For PWYW, I've added Cavern of the Creeping Terror to my collection of Ready-To-Go adventures.

Undead frost pirates, mad imprisoned fae, and a pile of loot guarded by a monstrous slug...

A third level OSR adventure featuring a three-tiered, 22 cavern dungeon adaptable for fantasy roleplaying systems with a light horror aesthetic. Includes:

  • A system neutral bestiary
  • A horde of loot for greedy adventurers
  • Possibility for diplomacy, betrayal, and a seaside village on the precipice of destruction

Inspired by Beowulf, The Thing, and Deltora Quest.

"This adventure delivers that evocative style over and over again...This one has the spirit of D&D..."

- Bryce Lynch, tenfootpole.org. Ranked "The Best"

Free OSR - Black Pudding #5 (Zine)

I love the entire run of the Black Pudding zine—the art, the layout, and the unconventional thinking. The whole line is classic J.V. West.

New monsters, new magics, a new class, an adventure, NPCs, and even a setting await you within the 28 pages of Black Pudding #5. Snag it for free, but trust me, you'll return for more (the whole Black Pudding line is PWYW) and likely leave a tip.

Dripping and dolloping into view comes the latest issue of this old school RPG zine chock full of nasty goodies for your classic fantasy games!

In this issue you'll see ipzees and orbii, you'll learn aromatic charms, you'll find weapons of magic, many strange people will offer their services for your adventuring party, and you will absolutely encounter some cackling ice witches.

Monsters, treasure, adventures, spells, hirelings, character sheet... everything but dice is included in this tasty concoction of gelatinized madness.

Free OSR - Against the Darkmaster - Quickstart (RoleMaster/MERPS)

In the late '80s, one of the game systems I played (ran) was Rolemaster, although it was often merged with MERPS. Of course, we always used the critical tables from Rolemaster. Rolling a "66" was always magical. :)

Against the Darkmaster—Quickstart is priced at PWYW and is a love poem to the classic RoleMaster system. You know you want it :)

Return to the Classic Game of Fantasy Adventure!

Against the Darkmaster is an Epic Fantasy role-playing game of high adventures, eldritch magic, and heavy metal combat.

Inspired by the classic fantasy sagas and 80s fantasy movies, Against the Darkmaster is built for heroic action and intense, character driven campaigns.

The Against the Darkmaster Deluxe Quickstart Rules include everything you need to start playing. In fact, it could well be a full RPG! This beautifully illustrated 122-page PDF includes:

Character creation rules and options;

Detailed rules for travels, combat, and adventuring;

A complete magic system, with over 100 spells;

Attack tables and Critical Strikes;

Dozens of creatures for your heroes to face.

Free OSR - The Doom-Cave of the Crystal-Headed Children (LotFP)

The Doom-Cave of the Crystal-Headed Children was the Free RPG Day offering from LotFP in 2014, written by James Raggi. To call the adventure "quirky" would be an understatement - and a disservice.

It claims to be for "any level" of characters, but I'd guess from browsing the adventure that levels 2-3 would work fine. It is pure Raggi, but it is solvable. Oh, and disturbing. Very disturbing.

Lamentations' stuff is not for everyone, but if you enjoy the various LotFP releases and this isn't in your collection, the pricing should be very tempting ;)

LotFP’s 2013 Free RPG Day adventure, Better Than Any Man, was banned by many game stores around the world. The adventure was even accused by one participating store as being about “killing children.”

It wasn’t; but people see what they want to see, and because LotFP wants to work with retailers and be a publisher that produces what retailers want to see, we have decided that per that store's wishes, this year's Free RPG Day adventure should be about the killing of children.

Not to worry though—they are freaky crystal-headed children. Inhuman RPG cannon-fodder. ‘Monsters.’ So it’s okay. They deserve it. So you can have fun carving them up. Right?

A LotFP Weird Fantasy Role-Playing adventure for characters of any level. As the title indicates, it is a dungeon crawl.

PWYW - Dragon Warriors RPG

I remember seeing Dragon Warriors advertised in Dragon Magazine in the mid 80's, and damn but if it didn't look good. I could never find it here in the States, and then I found Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, which consumed me for a while and satiated my desire for a British Fantasy RPG.

I never did forget Dragon Warriors, though, and purchased the PDF a number of years ago on DTRPG. I never gave it the proper read-through, but the core rules are now PWYW and there is a free solo adventure for it, Hunt on the Borderlands (which was released today) (edit - did I mention the solo is hyperlinked? Well it is). I snagged the hard-cover Print copy of Dragon Warriors for 20 bucks plus shipping. Not bad at all!

Enter a world of magic, folklore and danger. Here, superstition covers peoples' lives like autumn mists cover the moors, and terrifying monsters with bizarre powers lurk in the shadows. The king is a weakling, barons scheme against each other, and lordless knights, back from the Crusades without the honour or riches they were promised, roam the countryside in search of adventure - or prey.

Ruined castles and barrows are the lairs of the supernatural, or newer, more sinister masters. Labyrinthine underworlds lie forgotten below ancient temples and city cellars. The dark places of the world hold riches for those who would search for them, and the keys to great power, and death.

These are the Lands of Legend, and they need heroes. Brave knights, courageous barbarians, cunning sorcerers, mystics trained in the powers of mind and body, sword-wielding warlocks, elementalists who command the fabric of reality itself, and assassins trained to bring death to the deserving. All these will be your comrades on the path to glory - and perhaps your enemies too.

Will you accept the challenge of Dragon Warriors?

Dragon Warriors is a classic fantasy roleplaying game, originally released in 1985-6 by Corgi Books, relaunched in 2008 by Magnum Opus Press, and now published by Serpent King. This rulebook contains full details for creating characters and all that players need to adventure in the Lands of Legend. It also holds information on over 110 different monstrous species, 192 spells from four different schools of magic, and more than 80 unique magic items, artifacts and relics, as well as sections on jousts, crime and punishment, disease and madness. There's advice for novice Games Masters and players, suggestions for building your own game-world tailored to your tastes, an introductory scenario to begin your adventures in Dragon Warriors, and much more.

PWYW - Monolith (OSR SciFi)

Its been a while since I covered a new PWYW release, and good things come to those that wait ;)

Monolith is a table-heavy, stat-light OSR-inspired sci-fi RPG, that appears, upon quick inspection, to be fairly flexible in its focus with little implied setting. When I say table heavy, the book is mostly tables, but they can easily be used as a resource with the sci-fi game of your choice.

The price is certainly right :)

Monolith is a Science fiction adventure game for one Game Master (GM) and at least one other player. Players act as daring adventurers exploring a vast & mysterious galaxy filled with weird aliens, lost worlds, and ruthless factions. Inspired by old school role-playing games.

What's Inside?

  • Rules-lite mechanics and procedures inspired by Cairn, Into the Odd, Knave, and other OSR games.
  • 12 backgrounds for PC and quick character creation (or optional stat-aligned gear packs).
  • Rules for starships, psionics, weird space powers, experimental weapons and technology, ancient artifacts, factions, quick planet generation & inspiration, and more.

Quickstart - Against the Darkmaster (PWYW)

I'm a big fan of Quickstarts, as they break systems down to their basics and it's not easy to strip down a system heavily influenced by MERP & RoleMaster to its basics. In the case of Against the Darkmaster, the basics are still well over 100 pages. The fact that Against the Darkmaster Quickstart is offered at PWYW pricing is amazing.

Return to the Classic Game of Fantasy Adventure!

New PWYW -The OSR Guide to Playing 5e - Module Included (Playtest)

I'm not a huge 5e fan. I have nothing against the system in general, it's just more of a time investment to learn something I do not need to learn. That being said, there are many that DO play - and run - 5e. Some, such as JoetheLawyer, even have house rules to make 5e play more like an OSR game.

The OSR Guide to Playing 5e (PWYW) is a selection of house rules that can be used to make your 5e campaign play more like an OSR campaign. In addition, it includes a short adventure, that although nominally written for 5e, can easily be used with the OSR system of your choice.

As a bonus, Courtney Campbell is involved in the project, and you can't get more OSR than Courtney ;)

New PWYW - Mere Anarchy (1-Sheet RPG)

I've always enjoyed Dirk Stanley's work, and actually snagged some of his adventures for the Far Away Land RPG before I even bought the core rules. Quite simply, he does good work. Dirk, Vince Florio, and I even did a short-lived podcast for the Far Away Land RPG.

(edit: Doh! And yes, that is Dirk's artwork at the top of this page)

So yes, I know Dirk. Yes, I am likely biased. But that's okay because Mere Anarchy is priced at PWYW pricing for two pages (1-sheet) and your risk (and investment) is literally nil (unless you tip Dirk for his fine work.

I suspect Mere Anarchy would work best as a convention game. Simple to learn, everyone can be given their 1-sheet of the game AT the game, and all one needs are some d6's.

Mere Anarchy is an ultra-lite, 1-page (front and back) rpg that uses a simple 2d6 system. You can learn the game and make characters and get started playing in minutes.

The game features unique and simplified systems for many things like NPCs and monsters and generating treasure.

  • Overview of basic mechanics
  • Character creation (with optional rules)
  • PC Advancement
  • Combat
  • Magic (freeform system)
  • Gear
  • NPCs & Monsters
  • Treasure

New PWYW - Terror in Flusshafen (OSR-ish Adventure)

It's been a while since I've poked at new Pay What You Want releases (PWYW), so when I saw Terror in Flusshafen at DTRPG listed under the OSR category, I figured I had to give it a peek.

Well, it may be OSR in attitude, but it seems like a mishmash of systems in reality. There's no AC, but there IS a DEF score. It uses Luck and Advantage/Disadvantage, and claims compatibility "with most OSR rule sets including Labirynth Lord, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, OSE, 5E Harcore Mode, and Five Torches Deep." It very well may be compatible, but you'll need to convert things on the fly for the system of your choice, and I'm not really sure what system the author is actually writing for. He claims all you need is OSR or 5e knowledge, but if you've never encountered 5e, you'll likely not have encountered Advantage/Disadvantage.

All in all, there are enough hooks and ideas to borrow liberally from Terror in Flusshafen to be worth the suggested one-dollar price tag, even if one were not to run the adventure as written (it is nominally written for low-level adventurers and includes pregens for the mystery system used). The NPCs are well fleshed out and likely worth the suggested price of admission.

New PWYW - Guildhall Goods (Frugal GM)

In case you've missed it, the Frugal GM has been offering quality RPG resources at rock bottom prices for a while. His latest is Guildhall Goods, which is available for Pay What You Want pricing.

This short location set-up is designed to act as a loose framework for you to tweak & toss into your current campaign and everything listed here is a suggestion for use only. Several details, especially those on this page, are deliberately vague in order to make integration easier. Use as-is, or slice & dice the information given to suit the needs of your game.

The idea behind this Tweak & Toss is that a frontier location has a market that has been around "forever". This market also offers services for adventurers that join up as members of the "Guildhall".

I was having some PDF production issues, so instead of my normal half-page sized PDFs that should be booklet printed, this product is a full page landscape print that is designed to be folded in half. That puts the map of the building on the inside spread and you can easily just print off that page if it helps, but it comes at the expense of easier navigation through the document on a tablet or other screen.

What if the B/X engine was used to create a mashup of a certain 1980s para-military post apoc game,
another game set in a world of rampaging mutants, and the coolest elite military unit comic of all time?

It would probably look like this.

Michael T. Desing’s Army Ants: Twilight is two things: first, it’s an ongoing narrative about a group of ants at the end of the Ant/Wasp War, © Michael T. Desing. It is also a roleplaying game for two or more players, released under the Open Game License.

As a reader, you will hopefully decide to follow the exploits of a team of army ants on their greatest, and possibly final, adventure.

As a player, you will take on the role of an army ant or an allied bug, traversing the wilds. You will join with a team of other bugs to overcome the challenges that the referee places before you. You will use these rules, an assortment of dice, and your imagination to craft a shared tale of your adventures.

This core ruleset, which is also the first issue of the ongoing series, is released as a PWYW book in glorious full color, the way the 1980s would have wanted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Fantasy Trip: Melee - A classic game of fantasy combat. Create characters in just a few minutes – then send them into the arena. Winners become stronger and faster for the next battle. Losers die.

Each counter in this fast-moving game is a single warrior. Players choose weapons and tactics for their fighters and send them into combat against men, beasts, or monsters – to victory, or death.

This is the basic combat system for The Fantasy Trip.

Pacesetter Games & Simulations is Offering Three 1e Solo Modules at PWYW Pricing

From Bill Barsh, Pacesetter Games:

With the news of the cancellation, we at Pacesetter want to offer a few things for Gary Con attendees. We have modified our three AD&D solo modules on drivethrurpg to PAY WHAT YOU WANT. With so many groups shutting down, here is your chance to still play some AD&D. If you do decide to donate, we are donating all the proceeds to Gary Con charities - Wounded Warrior Project and Extra Life. These charities are definitely losing out and we are committed to doing what we can. As an Army veteran of two wars, I'm certainly attuned to the need. Let's all do what we can. Don't need the modules, please go to the charities directly. They always need the help. Again, thank you Luke Gygax and company.

If you can't donate, please grab the modules anyway! Fight some monsters, solve some mystery, grab some treasure, its what Gary would do!

New PWYW - The Trials of a Young Wizard (OSRIC)

Its been a while since I highlighted a PWYW release here at The Tavern. It being Christmas Eve (and only a few minutes until Christmas here on the East Coast) I figured I'd highlight a PWYW OSR release, sort of as an early Christmas gift.
The Trials of a Young Wizard is an exciting entry-level set of three scenarios:
Fresh-faced and more than a little hung-over our newly graduated mage of the great Dunromin College of Magic and his friends step into the tea-room next to the Porter’s Lodge and ask for something for a headache. Within minutes they find themselves accosted by the smiling figure of Malcolm Darkstar, Bursar of the College and owner of the tea-rooms, keen to ask them a favour…
This is a first level set of scenarios designed to take a starting-level party on their first exciting adventures in the Land of the Young; The Lost Son; The Return of the Cauldron of Millent and the Murder at the Red Barn.
You can run this set of scenarios in your own game-world or use it as a gateway and taster for the wider gameworld setting of Barnaynia - the banana-shaped world, starting in Dunromin, the most amazing city in the Land of the Young, probably the world.  This highly detailed and quality set of game resources is both thought provoking andf enjoyable.  It is detailed yet flexible, complex yet easy to use.  The ideal gameworld for any sort of player and Game Master.
SM12 The Trials of a Young Wizard was designed with AD&D in mind but set in the OSRIC ruleset.  This is the latest dungeon designed as excellent value for money and an easy fit to any fantasy role-playing campaign.  However,  The Trials of a Young Wizard is primarily aimed at the game setting the Free City of Dunromin and the Land of the Young on the astonishing World of Barnaynia.
Enjoy the adventures or strip out the maps and make them your own. Tip the publisher of you like the adventures included.

Yep, that's an affiliate link above. Affiliate links keep the lights on and the taps flowing here at The Tavern

New PWYW - Boons for Swords & Wizardry Core Rules

Hmmm. This looks interesting. Let's read the pitch for Boons for Swords & Wizardry Core Rules:
This is a D60 table I created for my home game of core S&W but it will work with any OSR style game. The idea was to expand on the class system using a random table. Players roll on the table at 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th levels. I found I wanted to jazz up the core rules a little without overcomplicating things and this table did just the trick. It adds depth to characters without the need for more complicated classes. This is exactly what I wanted. I love the simplicity and ease of play S&W offers but missed some of the elements in more complicated games. This table gave me the best of both worlds. Some of the boons can be stacked (GM’s option) if a player finds they have rolled the same boon twice.
Alright, I'm curious. Its PWYW, so you can peek for free. Let's peek (note - screenshot is for review purposes only)

Holy shit. I LIKE this. Even if only used at first level, this is pretty damn cool. It's not overpowering and adds flavor and uniqueness to PCs. I just went back and gave a buck.

Note, although it specifically calls out the S&W Core Rules, it should work fine with any flavor of S&W. Heck, pretty much any OSR ruleset too.

Yep, affiliate links keep The Tavern going strong and that's an affiliate link above. Help a tavern keeper out ;)
