Last Chance to be Gifted - Please Consider Giving to the Chuck Wright GoFundMe

No, Chuck's GoFundMe campaign is not ending yet, but the opportunity to be gifted in return for giving will be ending tonight.

Gifts won't be picked until tomorrow, as I probably won't be home and there is a truckload of gifts to, well, gift. There might be more than is listed BTW.
Some of you may have been following the developments of the recent hospitalization of Frog God Games' own Charles Wright. Charles is our friend, art director, layout artist, and an owner of Frog God Games, and he has been struggling with health issues for several years. From the GoFundMe site that we established as well as other fund raising efforts by members of the this tight-knit RPG community we enjoy you are perhaps already aware that Chuck went into the hospital recently for complications related to infection in his foot that are secondary to his diabetes. We knew he would be losing a few toes and maybe a larger portion of his foot but were awaiting word of the surgeons' determination of the extent of the infection. Well, I have just gotten off the phone with Bill and learned that Chuck underwent a full Below-Knee Amputation, so it was considerably worse than expected. Our thoughts and prayers as well as those of the community as large go out to Chuck, and we appreciate all the support that has been given to help offset the considerable expense that Chuck is going to experience from his surgeries and rehabilitation.
The generous readers of The Tavern have already contributed over $750 to Chuck's medical and therapy expenses. With the $250 that The Tavern matched, we've raised over $1,000. Still, we need to raise more as the situation is more severe than initially imagined.

We have a large number of gifts available for those that donate and indicate their donation here at The TavernA very large number of gifts.

Here's the updated gift list:

- $50 gift certificate for adventure modules (Print) at Pacesetter Games

- $50 gift certificate for miniatures at Pacesetter Games (thanks Bill Barsh)

- 2 PDF copies and 1 SC Print copy of Sisters of the Aquarian Order ( +Timothy Brannan )

- 10 bundles of Class Hack and Race Hack for the Black Hack RPG +Mark Craddock )

- 1 PRINT HC Copy White Star Core Rulebook

- 1 PRINT HC Copy (B&W) The Hero's Journey

- 10 PDF Bundles White Star Core Rulebook and White Star Companion

- 10 PDF Copies of The Sunken City Adventures Omnibus & Guide

- 5 PDF Copies of The Carnival of the Damned

- 5 PDF Copies of Far Away Land: Tome of Awesome

- 5 PDF Sets of a full run of Crawling Under a Broken Moon (issues #1-#13)

- 1 PDF Bundle of everything +John Stater has published (NOD, Blood & Treasure, Grit & Vigor, much more)

- 1 Stock Art Bundle by +Denis McCarthy

- 2 $25 RPGNow Gift Certificates donated by The Tavern

For those that donate and don't receive something from the above list, +Steve Gilman is offering PDF copies of Betrayal at Lucir for Swords & Wizardry or Pathfinder

Here's how the gifting will work. For every $10 donated to Chuck Wright's Medical and Recovery Expenses by a Tavern Reader, that reader get's their name thrown into a hat with the other readers that donated. Donate 10 bucks, name goes in once, donate 50 bucks, your name goes in 5 times, etc.

You can receive more than one gift. You can not receive the same gift more than once.

I was going to pull the names tomorrow, but with the amount of donated gifts we have, I'm pushing off the drawing to Saturday Night, April 30th. Get those donations in by 9PM Eastern Saturday Night to be in the drawing.

Here's the link to Chuck's Fundraiser at GoFundMe

I am NOT a mind reader, so you will need to identify your donation as a comment on this post and who you donated as and how much your donation was for. (if you have already identified your donation on a previous post, I have it. No need to comment again)

The goal is to raise at least $10,000 for Chuck and I'd like to see The Tavern's Readers hit at least 10% of that. Actually, I'd like to see us hit substantially more.

A huge thanks to +James Spahn , +Jon Marr , +David Baity , +Far Away Land RPG , +John Stater , +Denis McCarthy , +Reid San Filippo and everyone who has donated thus far.

Excellent Geek & Sundry Article About Chaosium's $500k Kickstarter Nearly Dooming the Company

Geek & Sundry have an article about Chaosium raising a half million bucks with the Call of Cthulhu 7th edition Kickstarter and how the "success" nearly did the company in. Among other things, understanding international shipping costs is key.

If nothing else, the article makes me want to spend  some cash at the Chaosium Store to reward the new owners for doing right by the Kickstarter backers they inherited and gamers in general.

Here's a small piece:

Gail Gygax Responded to Tim Kask's Blog Post on Facebook - Gail Said to Share Her Post (Sharing with Commentary)

Here's Gail Gygax's latest Facebook post. She specifically asked for it to be shared, so in the interest of fairness, I'm sharing it.

Then there's this in the comments:

So, why is Tim asking questions? Why are his questions "personal attacks"? Aren't there some records that are supposed to be made public by non-profits under Wisconsin law?

Back on November 30th of last year, this is what I was told:

There have been no updates on the fund's site (except for the removal of the names of gaming personalities that were listed as being associated with the Fund. Those that I had spoken with had no idea they were being linked to the Fund). There have been no answers. Today is the first update on Facebook since the community submitted questions via The Tavern for Gail to answer back in November. I strongly suspect without Tim's posting yesterday, we wouldn't have today's update. Whatever reasons Tim had for asking his questions, it resulted in the only Gygax Memorial Fund news in the last 6 months.

I think that the issue here is that many in the gaming community would actually like to donate the the Gygax Memorial Fund, but when they get to the website and see the last piece of news is from 2014, they get the feeling that it's going nowhere. I could be wrong, but when I see the last piece of news is from December, 2014 and there are no other updates except for today's Facebook posting, it's not a sign that instill's confidence in my eyes.

I believe the gaming community wants this monument and they want to believe it will get done. Give them more than words, give them actual progress reports. Show them what is happening, don't just tell them in a Facebook posting.

Gamers might play a game of make believe, but they need evidence to believe in Gary's monument. Give them the evidence for them to believe.

Note: Comments about the Gygax Revocable Trust, the Gygax trademark and the like will be deleted. This is simply about the Gygax Memorial Fund. I am generally an extremely light moderator, but lets keep this focused.

A Not So Short Follow-Up Question to Tim Kask's Questions about the Gygax Memorial Fund

Something was rattling through my head last night as I tried to sleep. You know the thoughts I'm talking about - nagging questions that hit you right as you're about to fall asleep.

Yes, +Tim Kask cost me some sleep last night.

Fact: On every return for the Gygax Memorial Fund (GMF), Gail Gygax claims X hours a week on fund related activities. The yearly breakdown is as follows: (note, everyone that has donated to the fund should review the fund's financial info)

2010 - 5 hrs

2011 - 3 hrs

2012 - 5 hrs

2013 - 5 hrs

2014 - 5 hrs

Fact: The Gygax Memorial Fund took in $421 in 2014

Fact: Gail Gygax was sick for much of 2014 (see below)

"Gail Gygax looks thinner and walks slower than the last time she brought her plans for a Gary Gygax memorial before the city park commission. A childhood illness that went untreated is now affecting her kidneys and liver, Gygax said in a November interview. Earlier this year, she required surgery and a two-month hospital stay to heal the damage... That work was interrupted this past spring, Gygax said. She said she began to feel ill while preparing to go to a game trade show in Las Vegas. She cancelled her trip at the last moment, and shortly thereafter she was hospitalized. No one else could pick up the slack while she recuperated." From the Lake Geneva Regional News
by Chris Schultz, December 04, 2014 (emphasis mine)

Observation: Gail devoted as much time to the GMF in 2014 as she did any other year according to the 2014 990EZ-Part IV

Question: There are two other members on the board of the GMF: Michael and Diane Curtis - They devote 52 hrs a year each to GMF business. Why could they not pick up the slack?

Yeah, this bit cost me some sleep...

Tim Kask Asks More Questions About the Gygax Memorial Fund - Will there Be Answers?

Remember those questions the gaming community submitted to Gail Gygax re: the Gygax Memorial Fund? The ones that, for the most part, weren't answered?

Well, +Tim Kask has done a follow up on his blog, Tim Kask's Dragon Grumbles.

Go... read it... comment on it... share it...

These questions need answers.

If you donated to the fund or if you bought the AD&D 1e reprints, you have a vested interest in knowing how the money you contributed is being spent (or not spent for that matter).

Free! Fantasy Stock Art (what it says on the tin)

Is it free or is it PWYW? I'm going to go with "free" with a tip jar.

Free or PWYW, the Free! Fantasy Stock Art offering from Axebane Games / Daniel F. Walthall is well worth your time to download if you publish, blog, need some visuals of weapons or other items for your weekly game.

Tenkar's Tavern Mid-Week Roundup for Thursday, April 28, 2016

What is the mid-week roundup?

It is events and interesting posts from our corner of the OSR. Could be links to previous posts here at The Tavern or from other blogs in my "I read their blogs" circle or other stuff that strikes my fancy. Just call me "Mr. Fancypants"

Probably the biggest news and biggest scare around the OSR this past week was Chuck Wright's hospitalization and amputation of his lower leg. You can read more about it on this Tavern post, as well as where to make a donation and the gift pool that has been donated to reward donors to the cause. If can give, please do.

Matt Jackson
Of course, we can't forget the Savage Worlds: Rifts Kickstarter (where I leave off the "®" because I can, for shit's and giggles). Less than 48 hours into funding and it's sitting at $176,501 in pledges. The Most Unread Blog on the Internet has a peek at the Savage Worlds: Rifts Player's Guide. First impressions look pretty good. Of course, I'm already in for the core books in print. What can I say, I'm a Rifts player from the early 90s. Never did run a session - had too much fun running suicidal Crazies to get distracted by GMing or some such nonsense ;)

I love the subtle use of colors on +matt jackson 's maps, and this week's pick is no exception. So, who has the app or program that turns the unskilled into master mappers? Seriously, Matt and Dyson are mappers to watch, and I do.
Dyson Logos
Speaking of Dyson, +Dyson Logos ' map of the week, Behomoth Lookout, is a stunner. Somehow it makes me think of Game of Thrones, but that's probably because the latest season kicked of this past Sunday and it's fresh on my mind. I just love the way this castle is set up and the moat is perfect. Yeah, I can see this castle getting use in one of my sessions.

+Tim Shorts over at the Gothridge Manor has an interesting article on Developing a Plan on the Go. Even more interesting to me as I see some of the thinking that went on when Tim and the rest of the "B Team" playtested some StarSlinger for me. It's a "thinking" article, which doesn't seem to apply so much to the "A Team". Their motto seems to be "consequences, schmonsequences - as long as I'm rich" ;)

That's all for this week. Well, all for this week's roundup. More posts to come later today...

Stewart Wieck Strikes Again - The English Translation of Adventures in the East Mark to Continue - Blue Box to Rise From the Ashes

I know many of you expressed dismay that it seemed Adventures in the East Mark was at a dead end in the US. Trust me, I shared your sadness if that were to remain the case. Fortunately, I can finally share with you positive news. Without further ado, here is an exciting update:
Hello,
Thanks very much for supporting David’s Extra-Dimensional Publishing project to publish an English edition of Adventures in the East Mark. He published a wonderful edition of the game and I know you were always foremost in his thoughts as he fulfilled the project rewards.
I’ll soon be announcing that Nocturnal Media is the new licensed publisher for AEM products. I have the pleasure of taking over the AEM license, but also picking up where David has left off with exciting future projects like the Blue Box. David has graciously offered to forward this note to you via Kickstarter because we both feel you earliest supporters of AEM in English should be the first to receive this news. I’ll ask David to send another note to you when there’s something major to announce, such as a project for the Blue Box.
If you’d like to receive updates more directly, then please scroll to the bottom of www.nocturnal-media.com and “Subscribe For Updates”.
Briefly about myself, I founded White Wolf in 1986 and co-created games like Vampire: The Masquerade, but I hang my hat on my own Mage: The Ascension. I sold White Wolf about a decade ago and now have recently been active with my new company, Nocturnal Media. I’ve funded several projects on Kickstarter, including new editions of the Scarred Lands and most recently a new edition of a much-loved White Wolf product from 1990, Storypath Cards. Earlier this month, I announced that I’ve purchased West End Games, the publisher of such RPGs as Paranoia and the original Star Wars.
I know that some of you are still due beta-access to the Blue Box’s Campaign Setting Guide. David is providing me a list of the backers who pledged for this add-on and I have assured him that I will honor that reward. The Blue Box is about halfway through translation and could be completed as early as the end of May.
Adventures in the East Mark is a very appealing and exciting game, and I’m proud to make the entire series available in English. I hope you’ll continue to explore the world of AEM with me.
- Stewart Wieck
On a final note, I am thrilled that AEM has risen from the ashes of Extra-Dimensional Publishing and found a much more suitable home with Nocturnal Media. The game deserves being in much more capable hands than mine and I hope nothing but the best to Stewart, as well as the game's original publishers and creators. ¡Buena suerte, amigos!
- David Wilson Brown

Alignment Shirts at Woot! (one day only)

If you don't know about Woot.com, it's a site that rotates in daily sales. They are also geeks and gamers, and today's shirt selection is a Dungeon & Dragons alignment collection.

There are three types of people in this world. Well, three types of people, and then some subtypes of people. And sometimes some people might change, and other people might also become a bit different, and other people might stay the same overall. Anyway. Hope this was helpful.

A Freebie - Savage Worlds: Test Drive 2015

Since Savage Worlds: Rifts is surging through Kickstarter, I figured it might be a good time to link the Savage Worlds: Test Drive 2015. It's a beautiful piece of work (but don't even dream of printing it out, as you'll use up all your ink) and a fine introduction to the Savage Worlds system.

It also highlights Pinnacle's Lankhmar license, so if you have a soft spot for Lieber, it does a fine job with that too.

Best of all? It's free...

Kickstarter - Irregular Webcomic!: Burning Down the Alehouse

Fire. It solves every problem in an RPG session

I don't normally respond well to links dropped in the comments section for another post, but this didn't actually feel spammy, so I looked.

It's got an Alehouse in it's title, so it has to be at least worthy of a quick peek.

To my surprise, Irregular Webcomic!: Burning Down the Alehouse looks to be entertaining.

I only backed at the $6, PDF level and it has just over a day to go and about $700 to fund, so funding is iffy.

Ah well, back to teaching myself Savage Worlds for the Savage Worlds Rifts Kickstarter.

Kickstarter - Rifts® for Savage Worlds - $85k in 3 hours

Yep, Rifts® for Savage Worlds is set to break some records. It's at over $85k in less than 3 hours of funding.

My old group in college had a blast playing Rifts (yes, I'm omitting the "®", fucking sue me Kevin). Heck, my copy of Rifts was signed by the Palladium crew. Great setting. Broken system.

And now we have it for the Savage Worlds system, oh so many years later.

I guess I need to learn me some Savage Worlds ;)

Really, what else can I say? This is an awesome setting and a strong system. Its like Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Perfect together.

This shit sells itself.

The only question is, how much pain do I inflict on the wallet...

Fundraiser for Charles "Chuck" Wright's Medical Expenses - A Boatload of Gifts for Random Taverners That Donate (Please Share This Post)

Share this post far and wide!

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the OSR Community and The Tavern's Readers in particular. Tavern Readers have raised over $600 for Chuck Wright's Medical and Recovery Expenses. That's pretty much 10% of the total monies raised. The Tavern also matched the first $250 raised by it's readers, which it not counted in the over $600 number.

There have also been donations of gifts from various publishers to reward those Tavern Readers that have or will donate to Chuck's immediate needs. The donation list is impressive. Gifts will be awarded randomly as explained below.

- 1 PRINT HC Copy White Star Core Rulebook

- 1 PRINT HC Copy (B&W) The Hero's Journey

- 10 PDF Bundles White Star Core Rulebook and White Star Companion

- 10 PDF Copies of The Sunken City Adventures Omnibus & Guide

- 5 PDF Copies of The Carnival of the Damned

- 5 PDF Copies of Far Away Land: Tome of Awesome

Mini Review - GM's Miscellany: Urban Dressing II (System Neutral Edition)

One thing I've learned over the years as an "Old School" DM is that you can never have enough random tables. Well, that's not totally true. I don't need 101 Things Found in the Middens (actually, bad example, as I can see my PCs digging through that shit). The thing is, one good set of tables is worth more than a thousand tables that are so esoteric they will rarely, if ever, come into play.

The tables in GM's Miscellany: Urban Dressing II (System Neutral Edition) WILL come into play. Sandbox prep often means lots of basic info but little drilled down. These tables help solve that problem for urban environments.

That's a ton of inspiration in those tables listed above. Hell, the Hooks, Complications and Opportunities could probably keep a campaign going for years with the right group. Here's just a small example:

I really do like the System Neutral versions of the GM's Miscellany series as they forgo the usual Pathfinder bloat and easily fit in an OSR or even 5e campaign.

$12.99 isn't cheap for a PDF, but put this on your tablet for easy reference and you should be as good as gold.

And yes, I'm trying to complete my GM's Miscellany collection. I'd like to try and do some "live" campaign prep at The Tavern as a series of posts using this collection and the D30 series by New Big Dragon.

Adding 5 PDF Copies of the Far Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome (and more) to the Chuck Wright Medical Expenses Fund Raiser - Give and Ye May Get Gifted

Yesterday I announced The Tavern would match the first $250 raised by Tavern Readers for Chuck Wright's medical and physical therapy expenses.

You folks gave about $400 that I know off (in less than 12 hours), and we did match the first $250.

I later announced that The Tavern would give away two $25 RPGNow Gift Certificates to two randomly chosen readers of The Tavern that give to the Chuck Wright Fund prior to 9PM Eastern, Wednesday, April 27th.

This morning I  announced that +Jon , he of Purple Sorcerer Games, is donating 10 PDF copies of the Sunken City Adventure Omnibus & Guide to be given to ten random Tavern Readers that give to Chuck's Fund prior to 9PM Eastern time, Wednesday April 27th.

Well, now thanks to the generosity of +Far Away Land RPG 's Dirk Stanley, we are now adding five PDF Copies of theFar Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome to the mix.

Edit - Huge thanks to +Reid San Filippo for offering add 5 sets of a full PDF run of Crawling Under a Broken Moon (issues #1-#13) - the gifts just keep on coming - ET

Another Edit - +John Stater  just added a PDF copy of everything he's published - NOD, Blood & Treasure, Grit & Vigor, etc. Holy crap!

Again, all you need to do is indicate your donation on ONE of the FOUR posts I've made in regards to the Chuck Wright Fundraiser (not all four please) and you'll be in the running for all the gifts. You can win more than one gift, but no one can win the same gift twice. It's weighted, so $10 gives you one chance and $50 gives you five chances and so on.

What is the Far Away Land RPG: Tome of Awesome?
Welcome to the quirky and bizarre world of Far Away Land. This is a world where noknil clones are part of a hive mind, where clown plants hurl terrible jokes while stabbing their victims, where a cataclysmic event of the past has sewn together the various realms of creation to a forge a nexus point on a fantasy world known as Far Away Land.
