First Up - Quick Conversion Docs for Currently Released Lower Level Swords & Wizardry Adventures

While Swords & Wizardry Light is compatible with the other flavors of Swords & Wizardry that doesn't hold true with currently released adventures.

Why?

Well, the first reason is that not all of the monsters from the fuller rulesets are included within the 4 pages that compose Swords & Wizardry Light.

The second reason is that magic items are not included in Swords & Wizardry Light. While that was partially due to space constraints the idea of keeping magic items "magical" came into play too. They are meant to be introduced via adventures, not as a magical shopping list.

Then there are spells that didn't make the Swords & Wizardry Light spell lists.

All of the above crop up in adventures currently released for the Swords & Wizardry Lines.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to go through the adventures released by Matt, Bill and others via either Matt's Lulu Storefront or Frog God Games and put together cheat sheets for these adventures. By their very nature, they'll expand the material available for Swords & Wizardry Light GMs and players.

This is the list I have so far of adventure that cover levels 1 through 3 (some might go higher)

Tomb of the Iron God
DemonSpore
Grimmsgate
MCMLXXV
Hall of Bones
Stoneheart Valler
Rogues in Rembalo
Lost City of Baracus

Let me know if I'm missing any.

For those looking to write for Swords & Wizardry Light, we'll work on getting some very basic guidelines closer to release.

For now, if you are aiming to write for Swords & Wizardry Light - remember, magic items need a short explanation, even if they are already in a Swords & Wizardry rulebook AND S&W Light is releasing in the form of a folder / GM's screen. If what you want to write fits on a two-sided one-sheet, it can fit right into that folder. Neat, right?

Deal of the Day - The Gamemaster's Worldbuilding Journal

I reviewed this back in August. It's pretty darn good. It's even better at $2.97

Original review is included below.

Remember, all purchases using The Tavern's OBS affiliate links puts 5% of your purchase price into The Tavern's coffers. Don't leave that money on the table for the greedy corps! Tip your barman!  ;)

When Fat Goblin Games offered me an opportunity to peruse The Gamemaster's Worldbuilding Journal I figured "why not?" It interested me when I saw it's release pop up in my email and having a chance to browse though it could only be a good thing.

It IS a good thing.

I was forwarded The Gamemaster's Worldbuilding Journal in form fillable PDF format. Which means I can make entries, print them out and not have to attempt to read my horrible chicken scratch.

Here's me playing with the Random Encounter page:

This page in and of itself may be worth the price of admission.

There are pages for:

-World Construction
-World Regions
-Deity and Religion
-Legendary Items
-Regional Hex Map
-Regional Breakdown
-Major City Breakdown
-Small Town - Village Breakdown
-Trade and Trade Routes
-Major NPCs
-Guilds & Organizations
-Minor NPCs
-Adventures and Plots
-Design References
-Campaign Outline
-Site Based Encounters
-Random Encounter Tables
-Taverns & Inns (woot!)
-Shops & Markets
-Cave or Dungeon Encounter
-Geographic Feature
-Strongholds & Castles
-Tribes & Clans
-Random Notes
and of course grid and hex map pages.

Its inspiring me to flesh out some of my worldly creations.

The PDF is only $4.95. Even if you only use a few of these pages it's well worth your money. Print them out, put them in a binder and you'll be organized. Sadly, I rarely am organized. Sure, some folks can use their laptop for tracking things such as this, but I like paper for such.

Did I mention that it is system neutral or is that obvious?

From the blurb:
The Gamemaster's Worldbuilding Journal is perfect for game designers, novelists, and especially gamemasters. Build nations, design kingdoms, explore the geography of your realms with this collection of forms, documents, and sheets created to cover all aspects of world design.
Use this tome to nicely print your notes and ideas in a clean compilation, or treat the journal as a scrapbook and write in the margins, glue in pictures, etc. It's perfect for any type of world building.
PDF Version: This version is 57 pages long  and includes a single copy of each form with no background and minimalistic design. Perfect for printing out as many copies as you want and including them in your own compilation.
PDF Version 2: This version includes the 840 page version of the print book.
PDF (form-fillable) Version: A single pdf with one of each sheet, form-fillable. Also provided is a zip folder containing each sheet as a single pdf that is form-fillable for ease of use and printing.
Print Version (standard): This massive tome is 1050 pages with decorative backgrounds and design. Divided into 12 chapters with extensive copies of the various forms, this is perfect for those wanting a high-quality print journal to transfer notes into or use to collect ideas as the form.
Print Version (premium): This massive tome is 840 pages with decorative backgrounds and design. Divided into 10 chapters with extensive copies of the various forms, this is perfect for those wanting a high-quality print journal to transfer notes into or use to collect ideas as the form.
Premium vs. Standard: The Premium Hardback is 840 pages vs. the Standard Hardback at 1050 pages. Both these books are the same size in print, although the premium is shorter by two chapters. The reason for this is that the premium uses a better quality paper that tends to be thicker. Both paper qualities are great, the standard edition just has two more chapters covering the regions (so 8 regional chapters instead of 10).

Swords & Wizardry Light goes to Print Today

The files for Swords & Wizardry Light get sent to the printer today. It will be printed on material similar to that of the Swords & Wizardry Complete GM Screen and made to act as a protective folder of sorts for your notes and materials. Heck, it can even act as a GM screen in a pinch.

Any remaining mistakes are mine and mine alone.

The unsung heroes here are +Zach Glazar and +James Spahn . Omissions caught and suggestions made, the final product owes much to these two.

Probably one of my favorite suggestions was combining the Wizard Lock and Knock spells. Not only does it save on space, it adds versatility to a low level magic-user. I'll be houseruling this no matter what version of Swords & Wizardry (or any other old school game) that I run in the future.

I'm giddy.

Can't you tell? Heh

Deal of the Day - White Box Omnibus [Swords & Wizardry]

Disclosure - I am a huge fan of the Swords & Wizardry system. I am a close friend of +James Spahn . The White Box Omnibus for Swords & Wizardry is awesome in its own right.

What's in the White Box Omnibus?
Now you can get it all in one place! White Box Omnibus is a compilation of all the material found in White Box Companion, White Box Treasures, White Box Bestiary, White Box Adventures: The Wererat's Well, White Box Adventures: The Wizard's Tower, and White Box Adventures: The Dragon's Hoard

Easy to drop into any campaign, it'll add depth to the featured adventures and provide hooks for even more sword & sorcery thrills! Brave the Swamps of Sithiss or explore the Stoneaxe Citadel! Visit the halflings of Burrowmoor and help the citizens of Willowford find peace!
Over 130 pages of Swords & Wizardry WhiteBox fun!

And Then He Said: "Let there be Light!" and There Was - Swords & Wizardry Light, that Is!

Let me start out by saying when I first thought of condensing the Swords & Wizardry rules down to a playable, engaging and fun four page ruleset I never expected the results we now have.

The faith that Bill, Matt, Zach and this community have shown in me is more than I deserve - but I'll accept it gladly, even as it humbles me. I walk among giants in the OSR. I thank you all.

I came into this with the idea of making something that the lapsed gamer could use to reignite the fire of roleplaying within them. Thanks to Frog God Games, we will soon have in our hands a ruleset that should appeal to young and old. New, current and lapsed gamers. With production values I never dreamed of having access to in my lifetime.

These are just a few peeks of what's to come. Soon. Hopefully very soon.

I couldn't have done this without every single one of you that is reading this, as you made this happen. Creation is exciting, but the true value is revealed in the sharing.

Now on to the next step. Support material. Because we all need some "Extra Light" ;)

P.S. - The bit.ly link is case sensitive apparently - bit.ly/SWLight Not much there yet, but before the month is out, there should be a page full of material and other links. You will have all the support you need to make S&W Light "your game'.

P.P.S. - Somehow in the midst of all this the Tenkar's Tavern Facebook Community surpassed 800 members. Wow. Oh, another member request as I type this...

P.P.P.S. I almost forgot to thank Rach for putting up with this crazy hobby of mine. Actually, she's embraced it from the moment we started dating. Without Rach, I don't think Light would ever have been.

And the Winner of Razor Coast and its Companion Books, in Print for Swords & Wizardry is...

I do love giving stuff away. Rach loves it too, as my gaming collection keeps growing and I am loath to downsize it. Giving away some of the duplicates I've collected over the years doesn't hurt and keeps the collection from growing too fast ;)

So, who gets the Razor Coast, along with its companion books, Heart of the Razor and the Freebooter's Guide, in Print, for Swords & Wizardry.

John Miskimen, step forward! Email me at tenkarsDOTtavern at that gmail thing. Let me know if you want it inscribed "From the Tenkar Games Collection, 2016" ;) (please tell me you live in the states ;)

I'll need a valid US mailing address. Shipping won't happen until next week as I have a few more things to give away and would like to make as few trips as possible to the post office.

Remember, by backing the current Swords & Wizardry Complete KS for a buck you are in line to get some sweet loot in PDF ;)

Far West - Next Week Never Arrives - Five Years Late WILL, However, Be Here in Two Months

You gotta love Gareth. He has more excuses than I ever did as a kid that hated doing my homework. Yep, I had excuses for late papers. But Gareth, man he's endless.

BTW, the money that was supposed to go towards printing? Long gone. How do we know?

Gareth needs money coming in before any can go out.

Look at his "beta versions" comment. Its been over 5 weeks. We haven't seen Jack nor Shit. Not an uncommon occurrence with Gareth. If nothing else, he is consistent with his inconsistency and failure to deliver.

He's an Icon though. He is Iconic as a successfully funded total failure to deliver Kickstarter creator.

For those looking for advice on how to handle this unfulfilled promise:

Maybe this is the kick in the ass Gareth needs to motivate himself to produce a product that he was paid for 5 years ago.

Kickstarter - Adventurers! Revised Print Edition

If there is one game that will give Swords & Wizardry Light a run for its money, it's Adventurers! Where S&W Light will come it at 4 pages, Adventurers! also does it with 4 pages. Sure, settings and other add ons add to the page count, but a viable 4 page rule system? I love it. It is my inspiration.

Don't believe me? Grab the Adventurers! 4 pages of rules for free here. A very solid 4 1/2 stars rating after 35 reviews. I should be so lucky.

So, what does the Adventurers! Revised Print Edition offer that the free Core Edition of Adventurers! doesn't?

Settings.

Settings and settings and settings.

The setting is often the secret.

I really dig this rule system. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll get to give a review (time will be tight for the next week or so, so give me some leeway :)

For those asking "What's so special about Sword of Air?"

The Lost Lands is the home campaign world of Necromancer Game's and Frog God Game's own Bill Webb. This campaign has been continuously running since 1977. Many of the adventures published by Necromancer Games and Frog God Games are directly inspired by this campaign. They have evolved over the decades, and more material continues to flow from it as the dice keep rolling.

Sages and wizards of legend speak of the Lost Lands—many of the players who have lived and died in Bill's campaign over the years now have a place in history (in the books).

Cher the dwarf, Flail the Great, Bannor the Paladin, Speigle the Mage, and Helman the Halfling are well known to the fans of Bill's work. This is the game world, and these are the adventures in which the players of these famous characters lived and died. Hundreds of players over the past 35 years have experienced the thrills and terrors of this world. The Sword of Air is the centerpiece of the Lost Lands.

Currently, this epic tome consists of several parts:

1. The Hel’s Temple Dungeon—kind of like Tomb of Horrors on crack. This six-level, trap-and-puzzle infested dungeon formed the basis of Bill's game through his high school and college years. Clark Peterson’s very own Bannor the Paladin spent several real life months in the place, and, sadly, finished the objective. This is where the fragments of the fabled Sword of Air can be found…perhaps.

2. The Wilderness of the Lost Lands extending to the humanoid-infested Deepfells Mountains and providing detail about the nearby Wizard’s Wall. This so-called “wall” was raised by the archmages Margon and Alycthron harnessing the Spirit of the Stoneheart Mountains to raise the land itself, creating a massive escarpment to block invaders from the Haunted Steppes. These archmages are actual player characters from the early 1980s who live on in the legends of the Lost Lands. Over 70 unique encounter areas are detailed, and each one is a mini-adventure in itself. New wilderness areas may be added based on bonus goals described below!

3. The Ruined City of Tsen. Legend has it the city was destroyed by a falling meteor. This place forms an aboveground dungeon area the size of a city, with over 100 detailed encounter areas. It’s a very dark place…even at noon.

4. The Wizard’s Feud—This campaign-style adventure pits the players in a long-running series of intrigues and battles between two archmages. Which side will they take? Their actions all play into the overall quest, and could well determine which side wins. Law and Chaos are not always what they seem, and if the wrong decisions are made, the entire ordeal could fail. Remember, one of the wizards WANTS Tsathogga to win.

5. New monsters, new demons, new spells, and new rules for various aspects of play.

6. The Tower of Bells. This dungeon is the result of the workshop Bill ran at PaizoCon 2013, where the participants assisted him in building an old-school dungeon. Visit the tower and discover the secrets of the “artist” within. Beware: those entering may never come out!

Flash Give Away Coming Tomorrow - Something about Air and a Sharp Weapon...

Well, our first gift receiver is in the land of Ice and Snow (Canada) and the cost to ship is ridiculous (which is why I note that it is US only for the physical prize - others get a $10 RPGNow GC)

Which means Quests of Doom 3 may come back up in this round of giveaways OR it may get punted to OSR Christmas. I'll be filling the OSR Christmas Box later this week, so there will be teasers.

Talking about teasers:

That may very well be tomorrow's flash giveaway. I'm not sure if I'm going to run it for 12 hours or 24 hours. It will kick off in the morning, possibly early. Rach has stated a desire for tea in the morning before she heads to work, so I may be rolling out of bed earlier than is my current habit. Whenever I wake is when the post will go up.

It's Time to Start Thinking "OSR Christmas"

December will be here before we know it and that will mean it will be time for the gifting holiday known as OSR Christmas.

This year, we are going to do things a little differently, which should hopefully benefit everyone, gift givers and gift receivers.

This year it is going to run for 12 Days straight - December 13th to the 24th.

Each of those days I'm going to be giving away AT LEAST a $10 gift certificate to RPGNow. The amount and number of gift certificates depends on how well The Tavern raises funding between now and then, but that is the bare minimum. The Tavern will also be giving away a box of RPG Christmas Cheer on December 24th (ships only to the US - sorry). The value of the box will be significant. Details will follow as we get closer to the holidays.

In addition, publishers and other bloggers, fans, whatever should email me their gifting plans and the days will will be running on, what they are gifting, any restrictions, so forth. When The Tavern's gift goes up links to all other gifting for that day will be part of that post. This puts the gift giving and the traffic where it should be, in the hands of those doing the gifting.

Something I'm experimenting with this season is Amazon Affiliates. The potential funding added to The Tavern's budget is quite high, although the few times I've added it to The Tavern's website I've seen less than stellar results. Still, if you plan to shop on Amazon, the extra monies will go directly to the OSR Christmas gift giving. Quite simply, you have the opportunity to add value to the gift pool by doing something you are already doing.

As we get closer there will be follow up posts to get the various details locked down as well as how we will handle gift givers that don't have an online location of their own to give their gifts from.

Soon. Very soon.

A Nearly Six Year Old Just Owned Me With Dungeon Building

This weekend I've been cleaning and organizing my gaming material. At the same time, I've had uncle duties. Shannon found some Dwarvenite and some minis and decided she was going to build dungeons. The minis (monsters) were to protect the treasure (gold) from folks trying to rob her dungeon. She wanted to include riddles, traps and secret doors. I kid you not.

If nothing else, this solidifies the idea that public play should include terrain and minis.

As a side note, at not quite 6, Shannon is now insisting that I teach her Dungeons & Dragons. She wants to be a bearded wizard. As far as I know, she hasn't seen any of the LotR or Hobbit moves ;)

Found an Unopened Ebay Box From 2003 - MageKnight Minis - Perfect for When I Kick off the S&W Public Play

Digging deep into a closet that I never dig deep into, I found the following:

It was unopened, so I had to open it. It felt like Christmas.

Inside, this is what I found:

I never played MageKnight, which is where I think these minis come from (Wizkids on the bottom) but I do recall buying some random commons with the idea of using them with D&D and the like. Nearly 13 years later, I find it. Literally 2 days after I posted about public play being the key to bringing folks into the tabletop RPG Hobby.

I tend to run my RPG sessions mostly "theatre of mind". Maybe minis for matching order. Even while running games via a VTT such as Roll20 and using tools like Fog of War, I tend not to use virtual tokens. I do, however, understand the value of "visual bling" for public play.

I had planned to use some of the Legendary Realms dungeon terrain that I already own for the upcoming Swords & Wizardry public play sessions, but I figured the minis would be unpainted Reaper Bones. Now I'm thinking I should hunt on eBay for bulk commons of pre-painted minis.

Yep, this shall work well for next spring's public play sessions. The owners of Legendary Realms have already given me the green light. We just need to finalize day and time as we get closer.
