Tavern Updates - Blog, YouTube, Substack - Oh My!

No time like the present :)

I was initially going to kick off the Revised Tavern in January of 2026, but then I figured November 1st, 2025. Well, it's the last week of October, and I'm kicking some of it off now.

Below is the new Tenkar's Tavern Weekly Content Calendar, for both long-form content and livestreams.

Free OSR content, for subscribers and members, will be released on Saturdays going forward. See The Tavern's YouTube postings for the links.

Going forward, I hope to have a daily calendar shared here that is updated with the coming week's video topics and the special guests for livestreams. I'm also looking into sharing some transcripts of recent videos here on the blog.

I expect there will be surveys asking viewers about future topics ;)

Oh, and the Substack should relaunch shortly...

State of The Tavern - Spring Planting and Some Fresh Paint

The first official day of Spring is right around the corner, and it is time to do some spring "planting" and "painting" here at The Tavern.

Time to reboot The Tavern's Substack, as I've had a creative block concerning rules editing, but not when it comes to content creation. So, beginning in April, we should see some OSR content on the free side of The Tavern's Substack and some short, or not-so-short, adventures and setting material on the paid subscriber side. More on that in a week or two.

I know. I used to create gaming content on the blog in recent years, but it will be a better fit on Substack.

Here, on the blog, we will aim to share links to free OSR rules, resources, adventures, etc., at least two days a week starting in April. There are a ton of such hidden in all corners of the internet, and I'll be making it a regular feature to bring them to you.

On the YouTube side, we've had great success adding some daily shorts, curated mostly from the channel's various live streams. This will continue. I truly appreciate the positive response.

State of The Tavern - January 2025 - Time to Reroll!

Wow! We're almost a full month into the New Year, and we've already checked off one con for the year (PAGE 2). Con season is off to a great start.

The Tavern's Substack, regretfully, has not been off to a great start. Lots of distractions and a number of time sinks, but I'm cleaning off the plate and hoping to get back to the weekly posting of the Substack.

This past week, on Thursday to be exact, we DID kick off the Weekly Midday Livestream, or Random Tavern Chat. The plan is to have a livestream, likely around 1PM Eastern time, on a random weekday afternoon. Why random days? Because of family responsibilities, appointments for Rach and myself, various conventions, and travel, pinning down free time on a weekday is NOT easy. It WAS a well-received livestream hosted by Glen and me, and we would like to make the livestreams at times that are more convenient for those across the pond.

We launched The Tavern's Swag Store yesterday. More items will be added weekly. It's a great way to support what we (Tenkar and all of the co-hosts) do on the blog and the video channels.

Tomorrow, Sunday, January 25th, at 7PM ET, I, Ryan David, and Grim Jim D will be hosting Inappropriate Characters: Rerolled. Hope to see you visiting the live!

State of The Tavern - August, 2024

It's been a good long while since I've done a "State of The Tavern" update, and not only is one overdue, but I have things to actually give updates on, such as Blades & Arcana, Rumble, X, and more.

I've had numerous questions and inquiries about Blades & Arcana (built off of Swords & Wizardry Continual Light chassis and known for a while as Blades & Sorcery). So, let me answer a few of the more common questions:

1 - Why did the name change from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light to Blades & Sorcery to Blades & Arcana?

A1- The name was changed from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light because Frog God Games was no longer the publisher of Swords & Wizardry and I didn't want to cause confusion with the Swords & Wizardry Line under Mythmere Games.

A2 - The name was changed from Bades & Sorcery to Blades & Arcana after editor Tim Kask pointed out that it abbreviated to "BS". When "The" Tim Kask suggests a name change, you go with the name change :)

2 - When does Blades & Arcana Light release?

A - I should have my author's copy late this week, or early next week, and it should go on sale shortly thereafter at the Wizard Tower Games website.

3 - What is Blades & Arcana Core?

A - B&A is built off of the SWCL chassis, without the limits that we went into SWCL with. We have plans to make it a multi-genre OSR ruleset, with support for fantasy, sci-fi, modern, and possibly other genres, either upon release or shortly thereafter.

We've begun to live-stream on Rumble and X, in addition to YouTube. Rumble is also getting the daily content that is already shared on YouTube.

Tavern Post #10,001 - Holy Crap!

I didn't notice last night that last night's blog post was post 10k for The Tavern. When I started blogging nearly 15 years ago (May 31st will be the actual 15th anniversary) I never thought The Tavern would still be kicking after 10,000 posts. Heck, I don't believe even hitting 1,000 posts had crossed my mind.

Over the course of a decade and a half, The Tavern has changed and morphed and grown. It now includes not just this blog, but a Facebook Group, a MeWe Group, a Discord Server, and yes, even a YouTube Channel

Thanks as always for your continued support.

State of The Tavern - 2024 New Year, New Stuff Edition

Well, 2023 was one hell of a year. It could have been better, and certainly could have been worse, but overall I think it ended up pretty positive.

So, what does 2024 have in store for The Tavern and its community, and even the OSR at large?

First off, a huge thanks and shout out to Don Semora over at Wizard Tower Games, we now have a gamershealthonline.com site to support the community with links, resources, and a forum. It's not just for those who join Rach and me on our Saturday Night Gamers Health live streams, but anyone in the gaming community who is looking for some support. The forums are still in their infancy, but they will grow with use and need.

The Tenkar's Tavern Substack will return as a monthly newsletter/ links to gaming channels/gaming content later this month. Weekly was simply not feasible, so I'm retooling it. As it grows, I'm hoping to build on the gaming content it will provide its readers. Wish me luck :)

Tenkar's Tavern Youtube Channel - We'll be adding Shorts and excerpts from the various live streams. The live streams are very popular but can last, at times, over two hours at a clip, so I'm going to be pulling out bits and pieces so folks can sample an episode.

Additionally, we'll be commencing with Fireside Chats, a series in which I sit down with various creators in the gaming hobby, learn how they got into gaming, how they got into creating for the hobby, and what keeps them going. We'll aim for 10-20 minutes a session. These will be released first to paid members of the channel but will be released to the general public approximately a week after the limited release of each episode. Membership is only 1.99 a month ;)

This here blog - as requested, I'm aiming to do some reviews, likely weekly, possibly with an accompanying video depending on the material. Possibly even some gaming content, in earlier, beta versions before releasing on the Substack.

Now, to dive into the backlog of OSR Christmas emails...

State of The Tavern - Fall is for Changes - Good Ones, We Hope ;)

It's been a while since your bartender has done a State of the Tavern update. As there are some things "in the works", I figured today is as good a time as any to make the announcements.

1 - I've been approached about participating in a licensed product's development based on a well-loved IP of yore. Too early to discuss details, but I am truly psyched. I'll need to find time in my busy retired guy day to accommodate this one ;)

2 - The Tavern's Substack - https://tenkarstavern.substack.com/ hasn't been updated in 3 months. Why? Because weekly was just too frequent for most of the channels we were highlighting, and it wasn't meant to simply highlight Your Bartender's Youtube Channel. So, it's going to be monthly. Secondly, we are going to add paid-for gaming content. I figure a short dungeon adventure (sort of like the one-page dungeon or a bit longer) would pay up to 25 bucks in DTRPG store credit, and a magic item write-up could be 5 bucks, a trap could be 5 bucks, etc. System neutral, so we won't need to worry about licenses. Authors retain all rights, The Tavern's Substack simply asks to publish it on Substack on a single post/issue. This would come from affiliate monies earned, and I like to give those back to the community when I can. Figure the budget will be around 50 bucks an issue, with a frequency of once a month, starting with November 2023.

3 - www.youtube.com/@TenkarsTavern - is doing well, but I want to reward our paying members. I'm thinking of doing a bonus episode or two each week, brainstorming gaming content, and releasing that for members a week before releasing it into the wild for everyone. I'm open to further ideas on this topic :)

That's all for now. Time to research how feasible it is to return to NYC tomorrow after today's flooding...

State of The Tavern - Time to Get Back into the Creative Pool

I've taken a break from the more creative side of gaming - writing material, adventures, and the like, in large part due to the number of distractions life has thrown at me the past few months, both personal and on the family side.

Well, no longer.

Today I received my Monastery of Zimrala Kickstarter for Monsters! Monsters!, and it immediately kickstarted the creative process for the supers supplement I plan on publishing for MM with the assistance of Glen Halstrom. Monastery of  Zimrala is a beautiful book and I'm looking forward to diving into it in depth tomorrow.

I'm going to reach out to a legal mind as to what I need to do to ready Continual Light for release under the Creative Commons (as there is still no word on the 3.1 SRD falling under the CC). I may need to tweak some wording.

Internet may be flakey the next day or so, as Fios is upgrading its service. Time will tell, but I may be more offline than online in the immediate future.

State of The Tavern - What Doth Spring Bring?

It's about time for a State of The Tavern update, and here it is, with Spring right around the corner. Just think - three years ago, as a society we were at the horrible beginning of the Pandemic, and I was suffering from undiagnosed Congestive Heart Failure. We've come far in the last three years :)

Status of Continual Light (SWCL) 2e - I'm waiting for the 3.5 SRD to be added to the Creative Commons 4.0 by WotC. It is the SRD that Continual Light is derived from, and I have little faith that the OGL will remain in place. More on that at a later time.

Status of Torchlight Zine - Torchlight will return after we get Continual Light 2e out the door. These two questions are the ones I've been consistently asked, and with good reason.

Pub Crawls - a series of one-sheet or micro-adventures. Third on the list and third in line. We'll get there at some point. Bad Mike already has a few ready to be laid out and released.

Tenkar's Tavern Youtube Channel - Going strong. We've had a significant uptick in subscribers thanks to the OGL fiasco. Livestreams continue on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday Nights. The content is also being backed up on Rumble, because of attempts by "a certain individual" to remove certain content from the Youtube Channel. Wednesday night Tavern Chat Live with Bad Mike has guests booked through the end of April. Huzzah!

The next convention for Rach and I will be NTRPG Con. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you there :)

State of The Tavern - Coming Up For Air & Is This Reality?

It's been a long couple of weeks, and I'm not just talking WotC's ability to literally burn off two decades of goodwill it has built with the gaming community in just over two weeks.

Yes, WotC's stupidity has cost me weeks of proper sleep, as I've been covering the fiasco pretty much daily over on The Tavern's Youtube channel, as well as keeping counsel with, and on occasions, providing council for, my publishing friends in the OSR and beyond.

Yesterday's piece of good news almost seems too good - OGL 1.0(a) is not currently being de-authorized (let's see how long that holds for), but the 5.1 SRD has now been released into the Creative Commons licensing scheme, and that's something WotC CAN'T suddenly change its mind about.

I haven't even mentioned events on a more personal level, most recently including daily, afternoon-long visits with a close personal friend of Rach and me who is on home hospice, and will be until... well, you know, the inevitable comes.

So, I've neglected some things, especially emails. Specifically, OSR Christmas gifts and some GCs from last Wednesday's live stream.

Rach and I have a livestream tonight at 8 PM Eastern. After the livestream, I'm poring a glass of red wine and delving into the email abyss. Hopefully, I'll come up for air sometime tomorrow ;)

Thank you for your infinite patience.

Tenkar

End of the Year Wrap Up for 2022, Tavern Plans for 2023, and what is this Dungeon23 Thing?

Yep, 2022 is wrapping up. Overall, it's been a very good year for all things Tavern. The blog is still going strong, the video channel has surpassed 1850 subscribers, and we added a Substack to highlight the video channels of our various cohosts and friends of The Tavern.

OSR Christmas has been a great success and there are still 2 days left for the gifting of gifts.

2023 will be a challenging year. I plan to get back behind the DM screen in the early part of the year, and I am tempted to participate in Dungeon23, but on my own terms. For those that don't know, Dungeon23 is a challenge to write one room of a megadungeon for every day for the next year. I'd like to change that, for my purposes, to one piece of gaming content a day for the next year. Dungeons, creatures, magic items, random events, locations, encounters - things that would be useful in an ongoing campaign, not simple time fillers.

Let's see what the next year brings...

State of The Tavern Keeper - Turning 55 and All That Jazz

Yes, it's that time, when your OSR Tavern Keeper celebrates yet another year. I turned 55 today, and I'm truly at a loss for words. Just over 2 years ago, I wasn't sure if 53 was going to make the cut, and here I am, 60 pounds lighter and likely healthier than I have been in years.

I plan on sticking around for a few more decades, and I know there are some groans when I say that, but tough! They know who they are ;)

Birthday wishes have been coming in via FB, email, discord, and text. I can't thank you all enough.

Now, on to bookkeeping. I've unlaunched my Patreon. It never served the purpose I had imagined it would and I never really had a handle on it as a creator. It's time to reevaluate and potentially reimagine. For those that simply want to support what I do, there is a Paypal subscription button on the top of this page. Even better, shop using The Tavern's affiliate links listed at the bottom of every post.

We've surpassed 1,500 Subscribers on The Tavern's Youtube Channel. That means that next Wednesday on the Talking Crit Livestream (which airs every Wednesday Night at 8 PM Eastern) we are giving away at least $250 in DTRPG Gift Certificates.

I've been asked why I don't watch many gaming-oriented Youtube channels, and the simple answer is, that I like my content much like I make my content - unscripted, not pushing products, not a game session recording, and simply not fake. Often the fewer bells and whistles, the more I like a channel, as it simply feels less rehearsed and planned. There are exceptions to these rules, of course, but I tend to prefer the feel of the "cable public access" vibe ;)

Alright, getting close to dinner with the family, so I should wrap this up. Tonight at 8 PM Eastern Rach and I will be doing our weekly Gamers' Health Livestream. I can think of no better way to spend my birthday ;)

Update - Tenkar's Minions Shirt has Arrived - Should be Available for the Masses Before the End of Summer

I very much like the quality of the Tenkar's Minions shirt I received, but the vendor I used does not have its own marketplace. Still, it showed me that the art will reproduce well. The next step is to try RedBubble or the like.

I will likely take orders for pick-up at Shire Con in September from the original vendor, but they only offered up to 2x, and as gamers that is similar to a Gamers' Large ;) Another reason to use RedBubble is they offer up to 5x.

As the art was donated to the community, all shirts will be sold AT COST when they are available. There are other ways to support The Tavern and they are linked below.

State of The Tavern - Minions of Tenkar, ShireCon, Tenkar's Thursday Night One Shots, and More

Wow. Things have gotten busy here at The Tavern. Let's talk about the balls being juggled ;)

Dungeon Crawl Cards should be going out in a few days. I did about 7 or 8 cards with pens that did a poor job leaving ink on the actual card, so I had to track down better silver ink pens. Ordered and crossing my fingers. Those receiving the first cards with the poorer ink will be getting a bonus to make up for it.

See that artwork/mock module cover above? That's from Fugli. Simply amazing. But it also inspired the adventure I'll be running at Shire Con on September 17th, 2022. Here's the pitch:

The Minions of Tenkar -The crazy dwarven bartender has left his Tavern and has taken up residence in the ruined abbey’s dungeons just outside of town. Over the past few months, a deformed tribe of goblins has heeded his call to extract revenge on his former town. Pets have disappeared. Someone peed in the brewery’s kegs. And now, old man Nasala has gone missing. Will you heed the call. Will you confront Tenkar’s Minions?

SWL levels 1-3. Characters rolled at table. Or bring you character back from a prior Shire Con and possibly level up.

I've got some twists and turns already mapped out in my head. Now to put it on paper.

I just ordered a Tenkar's Minions T-Shirt as well as an extra Torchlight hat. If the shirt meets my expectations, I'll order another as a giveaway at the Shire Con table, along with the extra Torchlight cap. There's a distant chance I may take orders for fulfillment at Shire Con

I'm thinking of using the following art for some Tenkar's Minions coffee mugs:

Starting in August, on the second Thursday of the month, instead of hosting the usual Tavern Chat Hangout on The Tavern's Discord Server, I'll be running a session of Tenkar's Thursday Night One Shots. These will use the Swords & Wizardry Light Rules with some options from Continual Light. We'll generate characters prior to the session, and characters that return from prior sessions can level up. It will be drop in - drop out and run from 8 PM Eastern till about 11 PM Eastern. The first session will be on the evening of Thursday, August 11th, 2022, and will use Discord for voice and Roll20 for the VTT. I am very much a VTT minimalist, so don't expect much more than for of war and online dice rolling It will be a playtest of The Minions of Tenkar, so if you plan on playing in my Shire Con game, I'll ask you to skip this session ;)

Oh, and no Livestream tonight for those wondering. Summers have a habit of f'n with expected scheduling.

K, time to get to work...

State of the Tavern - Revisions and Updates to Free RPGs and Free Resources Lists

It's been a number of years since I've updated the various Free RPGs and Free Resources pages. Some of the links are still directing to the RPGNow domain, which is now defunct and needs to be updated to DTRPG . There are also a number of games and resources that need to be added to the various pages.

If you can think of any new games, adventures, resources, etc that need to be added, please leave them as a comment below.

When each page is fully updated, I'll link it via a new post here on The Tavern's Homepage.

State of the Tavern Keeper - Not Yet Clear of the Long Term Covid and Plans for The Tavern in 2022

For those following along at home, I've still got some lingering effects from COVID/Omicron. I'm sleeping a good 10 to 11 hours a day and I'm still combating brain fog. I'm quite grateful that I'm retired and I do not have to make any life or death decisions. My biggest one these days is "cook breakfast or pour a bowl of cereal". That one gets decided upon how late I stay in bed ;)

Seriously, the lethargy and brain fog are the real issues for me. Sinuses, congestion, and the like were less than prior colds.

I'm still far behind on OSR Christmas emails and matching up gifts. There are many moving parts and matching folks up involved in such, and just as I'm glad I'm not going to the range to qualify with my firearms in this state of mind. I've been avoiding said emails until my brain is just a bit more clear. Maybe I'll try to megadose on caffeine tomorrow morning. If nothing else, it will be tasty :)

As I've mentioned prior, I plan on returning to doing gaming reviews in 2022. These will not be technical reviews. They will not be scored with a point system. I'm leaning towards a Thumbs Down, Closed Fist, and Thumbs Up, but it's going to be based upon my reaction to the product in question. Nearly all such reviews will be products I paid for with monies Taverners have raised for the cause using The Tavern's affiliate links. I'll reveal any and all connections I may have to those involved in the product being reviewed and will be as transparent as I can be because it is what you deserve.

I also promise to NOT use my soapbox for any political or social issues. It isn't why you read this site, nor why others watch the youtube channel. If you are one of those that feel that I'm doing a disservice by NOT using my influence in such a manner, you can fuck off now, before you get truly upset :)

Gee, a few glasses of wine and some brain fog, and it's almost like a truth serum. LOL.

OSR Christmas is Temporarily Suspended - FU Omicron!

As I mentioned yesterday, Rach and I have been hit by COVD, likely Omicron. Aside from the fact that it manifests as a severe cold, one of the symptoms both of us are suffering from is brain fog.

Suffice to say, brain fog sucks shit.

I'm avoiding going through emails related to OSR Christmas, because they require me to be, at a minimum, cognizant enough to record and forward information to a third party, or in certain cases, forward DTRPG credit to those that have earned such.

As an aside, thank GOD for Grammarly, as the above paragraph had a half dozen spelling and/or spelling issues. That's about 6x my normal ratio ;)

I'm strongly hopeful that I'll be back to my usual mental state by Monday (not that that is saying much ;)

Expect OSR Chrismas to return with 24-hour turnarounds early next week.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. As always, The Tavern is here because of you.

State of The Tavern - Anniversaries, Print Releases, OSR Christmas, Blue Hair and 2022

Today Rach and I celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. In the Spring of 2021, I wasn't even sure I'd be around to see our 9th anniversary.

I owe this very blog to Rach, as she encouraged me to start it and stick with it when we were dating. She has supported everything I've accomplished in this hobby of ours, and I can't thank her enough. I am far better for having her in my life than I would be without.

We missed GameHole this year, but thanks to Jeff Jones (layout artist and unofficial Tavern project manager), print issues of Torchlight Issue #1 were for sale at the Frog God Games booth. It is likely there will be a handful available at TotalCon and Gary Con. I've asked Bad Mike to ship me about 10 copies, and I hope to have some available for OSR Christmas.

Yep, OSR Christmas is sneaking upon us. If you are a publisher and you wish to participate in the gift of giving, email me at tenkarsDOTtavern at that Gmail thing with "OSR Christmas" in the subject and we'll add you to OSR Santa's Gift Giving List. This year, some of the gifts may be given away on the various Tavern Livestreams in addition to here at The Tavern's Blog

Possibly around Christmas, we may see the release of Continual Light - Digest Sized Edition. Yep, it's dropping Swords & Wizardry from the title to make it a bit easier to parse, but the rules remain the same.

We are looking at micro settings from James Spahn and Rob Conley in support of the new edition. Too early for details but exciting times.

Early 2022 should see the launch of Pub Crawls, the one-sheet OSR adventure series. Bad Mike has a few ready-to-go to editing and layout. He's chomping at the bit to get these published ;)

Also, early 2022 should see an exciting announcement for Torchlight and its future. More on that when we are closer, but if all goes well we should have a semi-regular release schedule, print issues, and more.

Tomorrow I dye my hair blue, due to the generous donors to St Jude's Children's Hospital and last Saturday's Tenkar Does Yoga LiveStream. More embarrassing madness to follow :)

State of the Tavern - Time to Start Updating the Free OSR Resources Links

So, apparently, all of the RPGNow links for the Free OSR Rulesets & Resources Pages on the right side are dead. 404 or some such nonsense. This means I need to change them all to the appropriate DTRPG links. One at a time. There must be hundreds.

This will take time. I'll be starting tomorrow. I'll also need to update for titles that have become free or PWYW since the last update.

If you know of any OSR rulesets are resources that are missing from the linked lists, please comment below and I will add them as I update the lists.

Now I know why I bought four bottles of wine...  ;)

Tavern Update: Blogger has Been Dumping ALL Comments Into the Spam Folder

I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but Blogger has been dumping ALL comments into the Spam Folder. I just noticed this a few minutes ago. Some are definitely spam, but most are legit comments that should have given me email notifications. They weren't.

I'll dig through more tomorrow and will look deeper to see if any settings were changed inadvertently.

I apologize to all.

I suspect it will be a busy day tomorrow...

Edit: Somehow the email address for moderations requests was set to: nothing

My regular email addy was deleted, so no notifications went out. Likely happened during a recent blogger update. Sigh
