News - RPGNow merging fully into DriveThruRPG

I found this waiting in my email this morning.

Dear publisher,

Starting in February 2019, all elements of the RPGNow tool pages and storefront will redirect to similar pages on DriveThruRPG.

You most likely know this, but since RPGNow and DriveThruRPG first merged as businesses back in 2006, they have shared all the same tools and digital inventory. On the front end, they looked and behaved like two separate sites, but essentially they have just been two faces of the same site for many years. The only real differences were the color schemes and logos.

You might have some questions about the coming change, so we’ve done our best to anticipate and answer them below.

How will this affect me?

In most ways, you’ll be unaffected. Your entire catalog of titles from RPGNow is already listed on DriveThruRPG (as it always has been), and you can log in to DriveThruRPG using the same account(s) you’ve always used on RPGNow, just as you could before.

Even your old bookmarks to pages on RPGNow.com will still work: They’ll automatically be redirected to the same page on DriveThruRPG.

What about sales reporting? Will my past sales be combined?

Yes, as far as sales records and your titles’ metal rankings, we will be merging those together.

Starting in February, your sales records will show combined sales of each title across both the deprecated RPGNow site and DriveThruRPG, together. The number of unit sales will also be combined, so if you had metal rankings for titles on one or both sites, there’s a good chance you’ll find that your rankings on some titles will have increased on DriveThruRPG.

What about my Publisher Promotion Points and marketing impressions?

No worries. Your Publisher Promotion Points (PPP) are already shared across sister sites. They are compiled by publisher, not by site.

If you have used your PPP to purchase site impressions for banners or featured product messages on RPGNow, you will also be reimbursed, commensurately, for those expenditures on DriveThruRPG.

Why is this happening?

Here’s the big picture: In the 12 years since RPGNow and DriveThruRPG merged, the growth of RPGNow has tapered off constantly, while DriveThruRPG has continued to grow strongly, year over year, since it launched in 2004. We’ve reached the point where RPGNow rarely draws new customers or publishers and sells less than one-tenth the volume of titles purchased on DriveThruRPG.

To be honest, we have known this moment would come for years now. We’ve just finally decided it’s time to put the RPGNow brand out to pasture.

If you look at the two storefronts, RPGNow has always had a stronger OSR and smaller publisher presence. This does not bode well...

Deal of the Day - Mithgarthr RPG Core Rulebook (a 5e Hack I Could Actually Run)

Its not like I dislike 5e. I don't. I think its the best form of D&D since 1e - not better than the clones, as I can run S&W without looking at the rule book, but much better than the rules bloat of every edition from 2e through 4e. Its just that it takes time and effort to learn a new rules system with enough fluency to run it smoothly is something I currently lack. That being said, Mithgarthr is a 5e hack I could find the time and effort to learn.

Matt Evan's uses Mithgarthr to present a version of the 5e rules that doesn't just feel like old school D&D rules when read, but looks (I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet) like it will play in a manner that will fit with my old school expectations together with a shiny new engine. I'm really digging what I see here. Especially the setting. Normally, I'd be tempted to rip out the setting and run it with SWCL but Matt's hack of 5e is something I WANT to run. No small thing.

Yes, I even get some WFRP 1e vibe, and that's a good thing.

The PDF of the Mithgarthr RPG Core Rulebook is normally $19.99. Until Friday, January 26th at 11 AM it is on sale for the price of $8.29. Print plus PDF starts at $29.99.
Mithgarthr takes its mechanics from the fifth edition of the world's most popular role playing game, but molds them against its grim setting. Characters start at zero level with just the skills they have from their mundane profession (of which there are nine to choose from) and a desire to make a better life for themselves. Players may choose from seven races including the murine Ratten and the winged, hawk-like Fjothr. Life is cheap and death comes often, but those adventurers who survive long enough to attain first level have eight iconic classes to choose from. Magic is cast using a point system, and is less common than usual. Monsters have their own magic system, drawing their power from Orcus.
Included in the core rulebook are everything you need to play the game! Character creation rules, combat, adventuring, equipment, magic, monsters, world setting information, and even a fully fleshed out town and surrounding wilderness to start in.

What Exactly Happened to Remove The RPGPundit's Latest Release from RPGNow?

In case you missed it, the RPGPundit's Lion & Dragon RPG got delisted and then re-listed at RPGNow, initially losing is "Copper" seller status, issuing it a new link and certainly losing its place on the Best Sellers list (currently at #28 - it was Top 10 prior.) You can read the Pundit's post on it here.

So, what happened?

According to The Pundit, OBS said when The Pundit's publisher uploaded the file to be published, there was  "some kind of an 'error'." They said 'the system' mistook some prototype page for the real page we'd been using all month, and that now it couldn't be switched back and the old page was lost.
At first they gave us a new page with no pdf option, without our copper status. After some gentle shouting and threats on my part, they restored the copper button."

I've only uploaded three products to OBS's servers for sale. As far as I know, there is only one way to do it. Assuming that is the case, it wasn't an error on the publisher's part but on the end of OBS.

Question - Has this happened with other publishers? Has this happened to you?

Now, The Pundit thinks this was an act of intentional sabotage over his anti-censorship stance. If you are going to go that route, you may as well throw in his right wing political stances into the mix too. I don't see the evidence for either. Not saying The Pundit is wrong, I just don't see the hard evidence.

There IS some hard evidence to take from this and The Pundit made the observation himself:
They restored my copper bestseller status (though now that we know they can fiddle with the numbers who's to say that they won't be secretly keeping me from reaching Silver or higher, or for that matter that games that have reached to high positions like that got a "little help" for being ideologically correct??) - emphasis mine
I've already asked OBS in the past about certain sales numbers and rankings I felt didn't add up. Their answer was plausible but this observation from the Pundit is making me think. Its certainly something to keep an eye on.

Yep, that's an affiliate link above. Keep the taps flowing here at The Tavern with your patronage.

GURPS PDFs for Sale at RPGNow

In recent years, much of the GURPS support catalogue has only been available in PDF and only via Steve Jackson Games' e23 online storefront. The times, they are a changing.

GURPS PDFs are now available via RPGNow (and DTRPG). It appears they are watermark free.

Now I'm wondering if POD is far off...

In any case, always good to see GURPS reach more potential customers. Its a heavier rules system than I generally like these days but I did run it in high school and college. I've been following the system since the Man to Man rules first came out with its companion Orcslayer ;)

That's an affiliate link above. Affiliate links keep the taps flowing here at The Tavern ;)

Top Five Bestselling Releases at RPGNow are OSR - Only One Makes Top 10 at DTRPG

Wow. Isn't this a thing of beauty. The five bestselling releases at RPGNow this moment are OSR. All but The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia have hit Copper is their sales numbers.

So, how does that compare to their rankings at DriveThruRPG?

Only AS&SH makes the top ten (at #10) at DTRPG.

The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia sits at #12.

White Star: Galaxy Edition comes it at #16.

Mighty Protectors? You'll find it at #41

And that #1 Best Seller on RPGNow? Through Dungeons Deeper (note - link takes you to the discounted Tavern price of $9.99 instead of the regular $12.99) It doesn't even make the Top 100 Bestselling Titles at DTRPG. Instead, its #89 of the Hottest Small Press.

There's a lesson to be learned from this. If you are an OSR publisher, market to RPGNow. This is where the majority of your customers shop. This is where your new release can rise to the top based on quality, not get lost among the masses.

There's affiliate links above. If you make a purchase through one of the above links a small percentage goes to The Tavern. Half the monies raised from now to the end of the month are going toward art purchases for October projects.

Seven of the Ten Bestselling Titles on RPGNow are OSR Titles

Wow. Look at the above screenshot.

#1 - Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea

#2 - The Forbidden Caverns of Archaia

#3 - White Star: Galaxy Edition

#5 - Villains & Vigilantes 3.0 Mighty Protectors

#8 - B/X Essentials: Core Rules

#9 - BLUEHOLME: Journeyman Rules

#10- Wormskin Issue #7

7 out of 10 of the current best sellers at RPGNow are OSR / Old School releases. Interesting.

One DriveThruRPG? 1 out of 10.

Yep, that's an affiliate link right above this. 5% of all sales go to support The Tavern. Thank you in advance.

The OSR is now "A Thing" at OBS - Interesting to Look at How it Tracks Differently at the Two Store Fronts

If you browse from the drop down list and select "OSR" at RPGNow or DriveThruRPG, you get a Hottest Sellers listing for the OSR. Its interesting to see how the market differs between the two storefronts.

At RPGNow, LotFP's Vaginas Are Magical sneaks into the first spot. Its 10th over at DriveThruRPG.

The DCC RPG comes in in the first spot at DTRPG. At RPGNow, its 9th.

Actually, only four releases make the Top Ten of both lists: VaM, DCC RPG, Beyond the Wall and Hubris.

Not sure what to make of it, but it is interesting to note that the two storefronts obviously have differing customer bases, even within the OSR.

The RPGNow OSR Hot List is here.

The DriveThruRPG Hot List is here.

The Tavern uses affiliate links to both of the above storefronts. A percentage of sales go to support The Tavern. The OBS Christmas in July Sale starts friday.

Some Further Thoughts on Why I see the OSR in General as "Underserved"

So, in Sundays interview by Erik Jensen (posted here at The Tavern yesterday), we ending it with this comment and response (edited for pertinence to this topic:
Tenkar - I see the OSR as an underserved market that deserves more respect. 5e is huge for the OSR because writing product for 5e and converting to the OSR is much easier than going from 4e or Pathfinder. There is synergy between 5e and the OSR. Some folks want to see new clones - I want to see new hacks. Hack SWL or the Black Hack or some other OSR game and give us a western, supers, space opera, sci-fantasy, godzilla monsters - whatever! I think the future of the OSR is finding new genres and not new systems. Or I could be totally wrong. But I think the OSR is just going to grow in the number of players at this point and we have 5e to thank for it.

Jensen -  Underserved?  Huh, I don't think that's a word I would've used to describe the OSR market; I often wonder how much 'product' the OSR market can actually bear.  I'm not sure it's all that much.
Now, if you firmly have your feet set in the DIY (do it yourself) corner of the OSR that very well might be true. Because really, what do you need besides some random tables and some time? More time than many of us have but time none the less.

However, the OSR as a whole is a largely untapped market. 5e is certainly bringing players in to the OSR fold and they are not mutually exclusive rulesets - you can play both and can certainly enjoy both.

Forgive me for saying so, but the OSR largely consists of older gamers who, by my experience, have more disposable income than younger gamers. The market is there, so why isn't it being targeted as much as it could and probably should be?

Well, there is the perception that OSR gamers are cheap. We want our gaming inspiration and material for nothing, or close to it. I personally think that is approaching things from the wrong direction. I think content creators for the OSR are extremely generous. As a community, we have evolved with community driven (and written) rulesets that can be grabbed for free in PDF (and occasionally print). I can say that my experience with the OSR Extravaganza Sale is that OSR gamers WANT OSR gaming material but no one bothered to cater to them prior. No one said "Hey, we know you are a tight community, here's a sale aimed and your wants and desires."

Sale numbers suggest to me that the OSR has been overlooked and underserved. Maybe that will change going forward. I sure hope so.

If the OSR is to continue to grow - and if we look at convention attendance of conventions such as Gary Con, NTRPG Con and Gamehole Con over the past few years, you see the number of attendees is steadily increasing each year, the OSR market should take the opportunity to grow along with it.

I'm not suggesting we need the glut of the D20 era, but with POD that's impossible anyhow - today's OSR market is largely PDFs and POD. Having a warehouse full of goods might be doable by the larger companies, but smaller publishers don't need that overhead nor investment, and that is good.

Do we need more rulesets? I dunno. As I said above, I want to see genre hacks of existing rulesets, but in the end, the community will decide. You'll be surprised at how far a little respect goes. I'm sure RPGNow / OBS is happily surprised at how well the OSR sale went.

Here, I'm going to make an open suggestion to the powers that be at OBS - you know how you have tracks for Hottest Titles, Newest Titles, Hottest Small Press and the like? Well, add a track for Hottest OSR and you will see sales jump for OSR releases. Often, OSR releases get lost in the noise of general releases.

No need to thank me. Just doing my service to the OSR Community ;)

(if you think I'm full of shit or off my rocker, feel free to add your thoughts. Heck, add them even if you do agree, as I doubt you'll agree on all my points)

New Release - 50 ShaDes Of vOrpal (ALPHa) (most certainly NOT a review)

First is was a ridiculed Kickstarter. Now its a release at RPGNow.

This is MOST certainly NOT a review of 50 Shades of Vorpal.

As far as I can tell, the author, such as he is, forgot to include an actual set of rules with this "set of rules" but that's ok, as the rues aren't the point. This is the fantasy rpg heartbreaker that was hidden from most of the 13 year old boys in the late 70s and early 80s, but obviously not all.

You don't read 50 Shades of Vorpal as if it were a game, but as a window into the soul of the fictitious author. Well, that and to laugh. Or cry. Cringing works too.

Amazingly enough, this is one product that @ConManKen could probably spell better than. Not by much. Just a little ;)

50 Shades of Vorpal is 5 bucks at RPGNow. I am not suggesting you buy it. I'm just making the proper notifications. Read at your own risk and remember, a portion of sales through The Tavern's OBS affiliate link goes to support The Tavern...

Microlite74 Ultimate Edition - Hanging Strong as a Best Seller at RPGNow

Its always nice to see games with the Old School vibe hang tough in the RPGNow sales rankings (currently sitting at #5 overall) Right now, that would be Microlite74 Ultimate Edition (PDF and EPUB versions) Now, Microlite74 and its various versions are an interesting experiment in sticking close to the 3x SRD while trying to stay true to the feel of the original rules. How well it does that is a matter of personal opinion. Suffice to say, Microlite74 Basic was one of my inspirations when I put together Swords & Wizardry Light - its not easy taking the 3x SRD down to 20 pages, which ML74 Basic did.

Needless to say, I'm surprised that Microlite74 Ultimate Edition goes far in the other direction - 384 pages. Holy shit.

Microlite74 comes in three other flavors - Basic, Standard and Extended. All are PWTW, so you can peek before plunking 10 bucks down for the Ultimate Edition.

From the Extended Rules blurb:
The Microlite74 Extended rules are based on the 1974 0e edition of the world’s most popular fantasy roleplaying game with its supplements and material from 0e magazine articles, some 0e third party material, some of the house rules the author used in the 1970s, and selected ideas from other roleplaying games. These rules are not intended to be a clone of the 0e rules, but rather a conversion of them to a rules-lite D20-based system that encourages old-school play without strictly old-school rules.

TSR Tuesday - Chainmail $5 in PDF - Mic Drop...

Chainmail is $5 in PDF.

Shall we do a mic drop?

Sure, there were other releases for TSR Tuesday - Print and PDF - but does anything come close to Chainmail?

OSR Christmas - Day Eight - OD&D Dungeons & Dragons Original Edition (White Box) - PDF Only

Its Day Eight of OSR Christmas. Before we get to today's festivities, let's find out who is the recipient of yesterday's awesome gift who ARE the recipients of yesterday's recent GIFTS, as +Jason Paul McCartan offered to make one gift into three!

I would do a drum roll but that doesn't work so well on a blog post. Oh well.
Bob Brinkman, dogrodeo and Dave Bendit - congrats. Email me at tenkarsDOTtavern and we'll get you hooked up.

Now for today's gift. We are giving away the OD&D Dungeons & Dragons Original Edition (White Box) in PDF only. The granddaddy that started it all. Sure, the reprint covers look like shit (IMHO) but the rules are what they are and that makes this nearly priceless, especially for those that don't have this in print (and who wants to spend over $22k for a wood grained box anyway?)
First published in January 1974, the original edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons would go on to see six different printings. This edition is for the Original Collector's Edition released By Wizards of the Coast in 2013, which was itself a revision of the 6th and final printing, the "Original Collector’s Edition" or white box edition.
You get all three books contained in the original boxed set: Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, and Underworld & Wilderness Adventures plus the Reference Sheets booklet.
Great to read and still great to play, the original edition shows you where the roleplaying hobby began and the original version of the game that spawned a hobby and so much more.
Comment on this post before 8 AM Eastern Time, December 21st, 2016 to be in the running for $9.99 in an RPGNow Gift CardOD&D Dungeons & Dragons Original Edition in Print + PDF is exactly $9.99 or use it for other purchases at RPGNow. The choice will be yours - if Santa picks you :)

This prize is available because of readers like you. Your use of The Tavern's affiliate links allows for giveaways like this.

More OSR Christmas

+James Spahn is giving away 12 prizes over 12 days and all you need to do is comment on one blog post. You will need to follow the instructions carefully if you want a chance to be gifted.

TSR Tuesday - New PoD Releases - Heroes, Locations and Clans Undermountain

So, what do we have this week?

FR7 - Hall of Heroes: Hall of Heroes provides complete histories and AD&D game statistics for such beloved characters as Elminster, the greatest sage and magic user of the Realms, Tristan Kendrick and Robyn of the Moonshae isles, Wulfgar the Barbarian, Drizzt the dark elf, and Bruenor the dwarf, all from the northern reaches, plus Alias and Dragonbait, Shandril and Narm Tamaraith, and many more.

But the Hall of Heroes is more that a listing of game statistics: It's also a sourcebook describing (among other things) artificial and magical lifeforms of the Realms, as well as the lives of the world's elves, dwarves, lizardmen, and exotic creatures.

Fantastic Locations - Hellspike Prison - its for 3.5, so...

GAZ14 - The Atruaghin Clans: The Atruaghin Clans is the fourteenth book in the best-selling Gazetteer series. It provides a complete description of the culture, history, and goals of the noble Children of Atruaghin. Included in this product are:

- A 64-page Player's Book that provides rules for Atruaghin character creation and introduces the Shamani, a new character class.
- A 32-page DM's Guide that details the history of the Atruaghin Clans, the unique Immortals that they worship, and several sample characters.
- A large, full-color map that details the geography of the Atruaghin Plateau and the lands around it.

Note on the Print version: The Player's Book, DM's Guide and Map have been combined into a single Softcover volume.

Undermountain - StardockThis DUNGEON CRAWL adventure returns once more the the hallowed halls of Undermountain, but it's a different day. At dawn of Highharvestide 1369, every practitioner of magic on the Sword Coast knew there was a problem. By midmorning, the Lords of Waterdeep confirmed the ill omens: Some brave souls worthy of the title "Hero" must enter Undermountain on a mission to save Halaster Blackcloak! Could these heroes be your group of player characters?

This is a stand-alone module and does not require extra support materials. It can be placed into a campaign on any AD&D world, but best fits and impacts a FORGOTTEN REALMS campaign set in Undermountain or Waterdeep.

Fantasy Beer Name Generator - Pure Genius or... (PWYW)

So, between having my niece over, trying to watch some football (excellent Giants / Saints game BTW) and reading the last bits of Event Horizon for White Star, I stumbled across this little beauty at RPGNow:

Fantasy Beer Name Generator

It is what it say on the tin. I'm tempted to use it to name my next homebrew (October is right around the corner).

As someone much smarter than me just told me - it's more useful that 40% of the releases at RPGNow based on title alone ;)

Remember, all purchases using The Tavern's RPGNow affiliate links puts 5% of your purchase price into The Tavern's coffers. Don't leave that money on the table for the greedy corps! Tip your barman!  ;)
Taverns and inns are a common staple of fantasy settings; they are places where players meet, get into fights and do business. But what if they want to have a drink?
Rather than simply saying that they can have ale, beer, mead and so on, this generator has a set of seven tables that can be used to roll up a more exotic sounding drinks (or simply pick the names manually). A minimum of two tables should be used, but all can be rolled on for a more complex name. The tables have from eight to thirty results, and the results can be shuffled into a name for the drink, combining them with filler words so that the name makes sense. Two supplementary tables of thirty results each provide options to describe the drink's flavour.
An example result, using all of the tables, would be Vale of the Green Orc Hunter's Best Ruby Mild, a drink with a fruity flavour and overtones of peaches.
As well as being used to create fantasy drinks, these tables can be used for beer names in any setting or period, including modern, as they are not dissimilar to modern microbrew names.

In Print - Polyhedral Dungeon (Infinibadger Press

Yep, after months of waiting, Polyhedral Dungeon is now in print. It's $7.99 for the B&W SC Print & PDF and $9.99 for the Color SC Print and PDF.

If you bought the PDF prior, check your email. Jason sent you a discount link for the print versions of Polyhedral Dungeon.

Looking for a review? There are five at PD's RPGNow page.

Looking for a play summary? That I do have :)

Yes, I had a blast and I groked the rules pretty quickly, which has most often NOT been the case for me when trying recent releases that are not direct decedents of D&D.

Disclaimer: Jason is a good friend of mine. I've podcasted with him and gamed with him. He and I have late night conversations at times. I ordered the print color version the moment I saw the email in my box yesterday. I subsequently got reprimanded by Jason, as he had intended to send me a copy. That how much I enjoyed playing Polyhedral Dungeon :)

About Polyhedral Dungeon:
POLYHEDRAL DUNGEON is an ultralight modern take on old school roleplaying. Using the new and simple to use and extend POLYHEDRAL SYSTEM, you can have countless hours of fun delving into dungeons and stealing dragon's hoards.
Features of the game include:
Create new characters for play in about 5-10 minutes.
Choose from the classic old school character tropes, but with slight twists. Play classic dungeon crawls with a flexible unified system that’s easy to learn and extend - make up your own content, or use any of the official Expansions, including The Advanced Rules which provides many new options for play, The Book of Monsters which expands and explores the Monsters in the game, The Book of Loot for more complete treasure and loot options, including many unique items, and The Book of Magic, which expands Talents and rules for magical and divine characters.
Designed for quick pick-up play as well as to handle large groups of players who have little experience in tabletop roleplaying - a perfect beginner’s game and still fun for experts.
Pocket-sized, so that you can take it wherever you’re going.
Includes dice printed in the page margins in case you forget your own, or if you need to make a secret roll as the Judge!
Includes a Giant Badger!
Also includes The Crypts of Bes-Amat, a free adventure showcasing how simple it is to create and run adventures for the game and system, as a separate download.
The book comes in a fully layered and bookmarked digital version, in both color and grayscale formats. Full sized character sheets are available in both formats too. There is also a downloadable full-sized cover that can be used to make your own print-at-home version!
Both Polyhedral Dungeon and the Polyhedral Roleplaying System are also going to be released under an open license soon, allowing third parties to create and release content for it. Details on that are still being finalized, but as soon as they are, the product will be updated to reflect it and details will be listed on our website.
Edit - it was asked in the comments to this post: How do you use printed dice in the margin of the page to make rolls?

Answer - open to a random page and use the graphic of the die you needed to roll.

No More "Deal of the Day" at RPGNow?

The last Deal of the Day email I received was on March 19th. I haven't received an email for such since and the upper right of the RPGNow home page is blank.

Did RPGNow just kill the promotion?

Question for the publishers that use the feature for their products: Did it capture sales and did it help with long term sales? Did it get eyes on your back catalogue?

OD&D Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-gods & Heroes - $4.99 in PDF

and now the circle is complete.

white box and tan covers.

three plus four ends the tour.

Yeah, my poetry sucks. Thank the gods no one comes to The Tavern to read my poetry.

OD&D Supplement IV: Gods, Demi-gods & Heroes (0e) is available in PDF for $4.99 at RPGNow. Sure, you can snag a poor quality scan off of a torrent or two (as has been mentioned ad nauseam by the same commenter) or you can grab a legit and cleaned up scan from RPGNow for about the cost of a large / grande / tall / wtf they call a large coffee at Starbucks these days. Wait, they may add in a stale cookie for that price.

Note: the Melnibonean and Hyborian mythos have been removed due to copyright issues.

OD&D OCE "Boxed Set" Returns to RPGNow in PDF for 10 Bucks

Before the great purge, when WotC removed their PDFs from the OneBookShelf / RPGNow sales platform, one of my purchases was the Original Dungeons & Dragons OCE Boxed Set in PDF. It was handy, even if it wasn't the cleanest copy. After the purge I wan't even able to redownload a copy if I wanted to.

OD&D is back at RPGNow. I have access to the files again and it's very clean, but that makes senses, as they are using the reprint files for their source materials.

$9.99 get's you the contents of the Original Dungeons & Dragons boxed set, as presented in the reprint WotC did 2 years ago. The booklets have the new covers, not the originals (sadly) but the contents are there.

If you are looking for an inexpensive copy of the Original D&D rules, this is an excellent way to get your hands on them.
