Bundle of Holding - Fantasy Sites and Scenes (Phil Reed)

It's no secret that I'm a massive fan of Phil Reed's work as an independent publisher of system-neutral RPG material. Phil likely is responsible for 10% or more of the Kickstarters I've backed (I am, sadly, a SuperBacker).

The Fantasy Sites & Scenes Bundle is a collection of many of Phil's Kickstarters with system-neutral GM-focused material.

Adventurer! This Fantasy Sites and Scenes Bundle presents system-neutral city and dungeon encounters from Philip Reed Games for any tabletop fantasy roleplaying game. Light your imagination with dozens of locations, characters, and encounters, and hundreds of rumors and magic items, that help you make any campaign city your own. Funded through just a few of Philip Reed's 104 Kickstarter campaigns (you read that right), these inspirational treasure chests of ideas fit easily in any setting above or below ground level.

For just US$14.95 you get all eight system-neutral gamemastering aids in our Fantasy Sites Collection (retail value $76) as DRM-free ebooks, including all three Fantasy City Sites and Scenes volumes – I, II, and III; The Book of Collected Rumors and The Book of Dungeon Encounters; and three little magic shops: Marco's Market of Magical Merchandise, Zeck's Shoppe of Riches, and Tischler's Tome of Treasures.

Kickstarter - Quest for Zines: a Zine Quest Zine About Zines

"A zine about zines." It's almost Seinfeld-esque in nature. Of course, you are going to see me backing or buying pretty much anything that Phil Reed puts his name to - it's simply a no-brainer for me.

Quest for Zines is a Kickstarter to support a month's worth of interviews for Phil Reed, and Lex Morgan are doing the interview. At the end of the month, they will put the interviews in zine format, in PDF and print. You can back Quest for Zines: a Zine Quest Zine About Zines for the PDF for 3 bucks, and POD (at cost plus shipping) plus PDF for 5 bucks.

This zine is a celebration of indie RPGs, indie RPG supplements, and their creators. Within this work, 28 engaging interviews will be featured with creators of all experience levels. We'll connect with designers, artists, and publishers. We also include conversations with those involved in crowdfunding, promotion, and beyond.

Join us each day in February! We'll be posting an interview every single day, each as individual updates! At the end of the month, we'll take all the updates, give them a polish, add some nifty art, and make them into a zine. And that zine can be shipped directly to your door.

Not a fan of physical zines? You can just get the PDF, too.

Kickstarter - Perilous Pamphlet Pack, a Box for RPG Brochure Adventures (Phil Reed)

Keep your tri-fold 8.5" x 11" RPG brochure adventures safe in this custom storage box! Also includes two new brochure adventures.

I'm a huge fan of Phil Reed. Phil understands the OSR better than many in the OSR do.

The Perilous Pamphlet Pack, a Box for RPG Brochure Adventures Kickstarter has multiple backer levels, but I'm backing it for 25 bucks plus shipping. So, the actual box and some print material.

Tri-fold brochure adventures are popular with the indie and OSR game scenes, and our new box is designed to hold those pamphlets! Designed for 8.5" x 11" tri-fold brochures, this box holds 20+ adventures. (The exact count depends on the weight of paper used for each.)

Roughly 20+ brochures (printed on cover stock) will fit neatly inside this custom storage box. It is designed specifically for tri-fold, 8.5" by 11" adventures. The exact count depends entirely on the paper weight of the brochures. (The exact count varies; you can pack more inside if they're printed on lighter papers than you can if they're printed on heavy cardstock.)

This is an easy way to organize your collection of brochure adventures. And it's rather fetching to look at (if we do say so ourselves).

Deal of the Day - Fantasy City Sites and Scenes III

Phil Reed does some amazing work in the RPG industry, and he always gives value for the dollars spent.

Fantasy City Sites and Scenes III from Phill Reed Games is today's Deal of the Day. Normally 9.95 in PDF, until tomorrow morning Fantasy City Sites and Scenes III is on sale for 4.98.

This companion to Fantasy City Sites and Scenes and Fantasy City Sites and Scenes II presents new city locations and encounters that can be dropped into almost any fantasy campaign.

City sites. Each of the sixteen locations detailed in the book is presented on a two-page spread (for a total of 32 pages worth of locations) and includes a few assorted details the gamemaster can use to add flavor to the site, as well as assorted other bits of info that vary from location to location to give the site a little personality. Hooks that may lead to adventure are sprinkled throughout this section of the book.

City scenes. In addition to the city sites, the book also includes twelve pages of encounter ideas and two pages of random rumors.

Deal of the Day - The Book of Dungeon Encounters

I've known Phil Reed for several years, and have had him as a guest on various live streams on my YouTube Channel over the years. Phil has become the master of the Old School RPG Kickstarter :)

Today's Deal of the Day is The Book of Encounters by Phil Reed. While systemless, it certainly hues to the old-school sensibilities many of us are used to. Normally 9.99 in PDF, but until tomorrow morning, The Book of Encounters is on sale for 5.97.

Welcome to the dungeon, gamemaster. More so than any other location, the dungeon is the heart of adventure for many a fantasy roleplaying game.

On the pages of this book, you will find 100 different dungeon encounter ideas drawn from five different imaginations. This time I am joined by four other co-authors who have brought their own experiences and concepts to the book, making it far more entertaining than it would have been without them.

Over half of the book has been written by my co-authors, making my own contribution to this work little more than the act of dreaming up the project, coordinating the

efforts of the creators, and handling the task of managing the Kickstarter campaign as well as the final design and layout of the book. My co-authors deserve the real credit for how very fun this book has turned out.

The Book of Dungeon Encounters is for those gamemasters who are stuck for an idea. Simply turn to this book and roll (or select!) an encounter. I hope that you enjoy the work as much as I have.

– Philip Reed

Kickstarter - Deck of Old-School Encounters Set Two, OSR Fantasy RPG Cards (Phil Reed)

72 more encounter cards for use with almost any fantasy RPG! May be used alone or combined with Set 1. Written by Philip Reed.

I'm a huge fan, and a friend, of Phil Reed. I've been following Phil for decades, back when he had an email list with gaming ideas. These days, he's the master of the small and quick RPG Kickstarter. Phil's current Kickstarter, Deck of Old-School Encounters Set Two, OSR Fantasy RPG Cards is only live for a short time, and as I type this has less than 3 days left in its funding period.

The Deck of Old-School Encounters Set Two includes 72 more random encounter cards, each one illustrated. This deck – for use by gamemasters and solo players – gives you a quick way to generate the next random encounter in your game.

Fully compatible with the first set (or use this second set of cards on their own)! You can select the first deck in the $8, $12, and $30 rewards. Or, if you wish, buy it today at DriveThruRPG!

These systemless cards work with any classic fantasy RPG. They are also a good fit for modern campaigns looking to add a touch of old-school flavor.

Each card also features the baseline reaction of the encountered character or creature. The reactions are divided into three categories.

  • Friendly. The encountered character(s) are open to assisting the party of adventurers . . . so long as the heroes are also friendly.
  • Indifferent. The encountered character(s) or creature(s) are likely to ignore the party if the adventurers don't do something stupid. Events during gameplay may turn some indifferent situations into hostile (or maybe even friendly) reactions . . . depending on the players' actions.
  • Hostile. The encountered character(s) or creature(s) are prone to violence and very likely to attack the party. Of course, the heroes may be able to sway the opposition, possibly turning an armed conflict into a tense – yet peaceful – meeting of two groups. (Who are we kidding? The adventurers are more likely to engage in fisticuffs than they are in conversation.)

Kickstarter - Combat Banes and Boons, Unforgettable Crits in Fantasy RPGs

What is that you say? A new Kickstarter from Phil Reed? Impossible! Heh. Phil is back with his Combat Banes and Boons, Unforgettable Crits in Fantasy RPGs Kickstarter.

Combat Banes and Combat Boons are critical failure and critical success results designed to make your skirmishes a tad more . . . interesting. Presented as a print-on-demand book or as print-on-demand cards, created by Lex Morgan and Philip Reed, these critical results may cause the heroes trouble (Banes) or might give the adventurers an unexpected benefit (Boons).

NOTE: The project was originally conceived as two 50-card decks. We created the collected book edition for those gamemasters who prefer to use books over cards. Or, if you wish, you could hand the card decks to the players and use the book as a reference.

These rules were created for use with most editions and variants of the classic ampersand fantasy roleplaying game. (You know, the one that includes both the dungeons as well as the many dragons.) Gamemasters will need to apply their best judgment to resolving each entry, and clever GMs can no doubt use these ideas in almost any fantasy game of their choosing.

Kickstarter - 50 Patrons of the Market, Systemless Fantasy RPG Cards (Phil Reed)

Who do the adventurers meet in the market? Shuffle and draw one of these 50 cards to spark the next encounter. Designed by Philip Reed.

I've said this before, so I'll say it again - I consider Phil Reed a friend and he never ceases to amaze me with the usefulness and affordability of his various Kickstarters for improv-heavy GMs. It's simply "good stuff".

What does Phil give us with the 50 Patrons of the Market, Systemless Fantasy RPG Cards Kickstarter?

Welcome, gamemasters! 50 Patrons of the Market is a collection of NPCs that you can drop into almost any fantasy roleplaying game. There are zero game stats or rules included in this set. Instead, every card features an NPC illustration as well as a short bit of descriptive text to inspire you.

The included non-player characters may serve as companions, enemies, or contacts for the adventurers. Each is limited solely by your imagination and the actions of the players.

The cards are numbered just in case you should ever want to write down notes. It makes it easy to find the card in question.

Kickstarter - Hex Dek, Systemless Fantasy RPG Hexcrawl Cards

To be honest, I thought I posted about Phil Reed's latest Kickstarter already, but it appears I did not. I'm already backing Hex Dek for 50 bucks, which tells you how excited I am to back yet another project from Phil, but the actual post never actually got made. Well, there are 3 days left to back, so don't wait too long to pull the trigger on Hex Dek.

Note: Hex Dek is a purely digital, PDF plus Print on Demand (POD), project. Phil won't be doing any mailing on this one. It also means, if you are backing for a physical (POD) product, you will have an additional "at cost" charge from OneBookShelf when you do order the POD.

Hex Dek consists of 50 double-sided cards:

On the front of the card we have:

  • A seven-hex mini-map. (Each hex represents a two to three-mile section of land. Of course, the GM is free to adjust this scale as they wish.)
  • A short description of one location.

On the back of the card we have:

  • Expanded information on the location described on the card front.
  • At times, a second location description.
  • A random encounter table.

The cards are completely systemless. There are no game stats at all. Instead, these are encounter prompts that are intended to inspire the GM. They may also prove useful to solitaire RPG players in need of more prompts for their game sessions.

Hex Dek POD is 7 bucks (plus at-cost printing and shipping upon final order) via Kickstarter, but you can back for more to get more. If you are the least bit interested in hex crawls, I strongly suggest you back for the core deck. :)

Kickstarter - Tomb of Zines, a Storage Box for your Fantasy RPG Zines (Phil Reed)

I'm a huge fan of Phil Reed and his various Kickstarters. They are always a great value for your money, ship on time, and are universally useful. It doesn't hurt that I consider Phil a friend, but I'd be saying all of this regardless ;)

This time around, Phil is offering a box to hold your various zines - The Tomb of Zines. But it's not just a box, it's also gaming content. Imagine that...

If you've been collecting fantasy roleplaying game zines, then you've likely hit the same problem that many of us have: how do you store these things? The indie community does an incredible job of creating fun, entertaining game content in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and formats, but it can sometimes be challenging to figure out where and how to store all of these remarkable works of art.

That's where the Tomb of Zines comes into play! This storage box features a 6.25" x 9.25" x 2" space to carry your favorite zines. Better still, the box is more than just a box! Printed on the outside and inside of the box are random tables to assist the gamemaster in preparing quick encounters and packed with possible adventure ideas. The back of the box features a table that directs the GM to one of six different brochures included inside the box.

The six brochures are each 9" x 9" in size, double-sided, and folded down to 3" x 9" so that they fit neatly in the Tomb of Zines. These six brochures are packed in the box at the project launch. All six are written and ready for the editing process!

  • The Wizard's Secrets - 2d12 table. What secret does the wizard reveal before he dies?
  • The Wizard's Requests - 2d10 table. What does the wizard ask of the party?
  • The Wizard's Demands - 2d20 table. What does the wizard demand of the adventures?
  • The Wizard's Summons - 5d6 table. What terrible or frightening thing has the wizard summoned?
  • The Wizard's Tales - 1d12 table. What story does the wizard tell the heroes?
  • The Wizard's Attacks - 1d20 table. Exactly how does the wizard attack theadventurers?

Kickstarter - Zeck's Shoppe of Riches, A Collection of OSR Magic Items (Phil Reed)

This book of D100 magic items and D100 rumors was designed for use with many fantasy OSR roleplaying games.

I've been a fan of Phil Reed and his gaming material for over two decades. I've had lunch with Phil and we've spoken about the hobby, the business, and life in general. I've backed nearly every Kickstarter in print or PDF that Phil has published in the last few years, each with great satisfaction, and Phil has proven to be the master of "The Dollar PDF".

Phil's current Kickstarter is Zeck's Shoppe of Riches, A Collection of OSR Magic Items (along with Tischler's Tome of Treasures). You can snag the pair for 5 bucks in PDF or 26 bucks (plus 6 bucks shipping in the US) in saddle stitched print plus PDF.

Zeck's Shoppe of Riches

Within this book are 100 different magic items that I created to satisfy my desires and entertain myself. These range from moderately mundane to overpowered objects that might ultimately destroy a campaign when placed in the wrong hands (such as the hands of a player character). As always, I wrote the different items you will soon encounter with a single goal: to provide the gamemaster with enough of a hook to spark their imaginations and trigger ideas that I could have never come up with on my own.

Tischler's Tome of Treasures

This second book of magic items, written specifically for this Kickstarter campaign and never published before, follows the same physical format as Zeck's Shoppe of Riches . . . with entirely new content! As with Zeck's Shoppe of Riches, everything I wrote for Tischler's Tome of Treasures was designed to inspire gamemasters. I’m a big believer in trusting the gamemaster to do what is best for their own game; my job is to add new tools to the GM’s bag of tricks and let them take it from there.

Note, Friday, May 12th, Phil Reed will be the special guest for the Random Party Generator Livestream on The Tavern's YouTube Channel.

Kickstarter - D100 Dungeon Hooks, Fantasy RPG Encounters by Philip Reed

These 100 encounter hooks were created for use with fantasy roleplaying games. Each hook includes enough info to inspire the GM.

It's from Phil Reed. Need I say more?

D100 Dungeon Hooks, Fantasy RPG Encounters by Philip Reed Kickstarter is 5 bucks in PDF, 6 bucks for PDF plus POD, and 12 bucks plus shipping for saddle stitched print plus PDF.

I'm in for the saddle-stitched print :)

Created by Philip Reed (PDFs available at DriveThruRPG), this collection of D100 encounter hooks was designed for use with most fantasy roleplaying games. Primarily a source of inspiration for the gamemaster, each of the enclosed hooks details just enough of an idea to get the GM's imagination running. Mix, match, and modify every single one of the d100 hooks to suit the specifics of your preferred game system and campaign setting.

Kickstarter - Bizarre Citizens and Foes, for Use With Fantasy RPGs

Two tiny booklets, each a d66 collection of NPC concepts to drop into your OSR fantasy roleplaying game. Created by Philip Reed.

You had me with Phil Reed on the tin :)

Yes, as usual, you can back for as little as a buck and get TWO PDFs and stretch goals, for less than the price of a can of Coke. Yep, Bizarre Citizens and Foes is another amazing Phil Reed Kickstarter.

Following the success of the Bizarre Blades and Torches Kickstarter campaign, and because I had so much fun writing those tiny booklets, I've decided to tackle another wave of (approximately) A6-sized fantasy RPG supplements. This time around, the bulk of the work is focused on NPC ideas that gamemasters may flesh out and throw into their campaigns.

With your support, I'll produce at least two -- and possibly as many as four! -- different (approximately) A6-sized booklets. The titles in question are:

  • Bizarre Citizens - 16 pages. A d66 collection of NPCs that may be encountered in a fantasy city or town.
  • Bizarre Foes - 16 pages. d66 NPCs who may prove to be less than helpful during the campaign.
  • Bizarre Seafolk - 16 pages. A selection of d66 NPCs, but this time focused on denizens of the seas. $5,000 stretch goal. Unlocked.
  • Bizarre Chests - 16 pages. This d66 collection of trunks, chests, lockboxes, and more exists solely to give the GM some more ideas on where to hide valuables. $7,500 stretch goal. Unlocked.

NOTE: All page counts include covers, inside covers, and the guts of the booklet. These tiny works are designed as a quick source of inspiration for the busy gamemaster who always needs more ideas before the next session.

Kickstarter - Bizarre Blades and Torches, for Use With Fantasy RPGs (Phil Reed)

For those that don't already know, Phil Reed is the master of offering high-value Kickstarters at bargain prices. Bizarre Blades and Torches, for Use With Fantasy RPGs is no exception to the rule, it simply reinforces it.

As I experiment with formats, I find my attention turning to tiny booklets. I've created some smaller books in the past -- Gregor's Guide to Gates and Curic's Cursed Chapbook -- but I've never fully embraced the almost A6-sized page . . . until now!

With your support, I'll produce at least two -- and possibly as many as four! -- different (approximately) A6-sized booklets. The titles in question are:

  •  Bizarre Blades - 16 pages. A d66 selection of magic swords and daggers.
  •  Bizarre Torches - 12 pages. d66 magical and unusual torches.
  •  Bizarre Tomes - 16 pages. A selection of d66 odd books, including some magic items. $5,000 stretch goal. Unlocked.
  •  Bizarre Goos - 16 pages. Do you need more slimes and oozes? This d66 collection is for you! $7,500 stretch goal. Unlocked.

Unlocked stretch goals impact all reward levels. If you select the $1 PDF reward, you will receive the unlocked stretch goals in PDF. If you have chosen the $13 or higher print reward levels (United States addresses only), then any unlocked stretch goals will be included in your rewards in both PDF and print. If the $7,500 stretch goal is unlocked, all print rewards receive all four printed booklets! (note - all stretch goals have been reached)

One buck gets you all the above in PDF. There is no reason for ANYONE not to back for a buck.

$13 plus shipping gets you all the above in Print and PDF.

Do eet! You know you want to!

Kickstarter - HST.3.33, a Third-Party CY_BORG Musical Interlude (Phil Reed)

Phil Reed is the master of the One Dollar Kickstarter. It's not a level where you "kick in to support" but a level where you get all of the goods in digital format. It is really something special to see.

This time, Phil is offering both an MP# file and a PDF adventure for a buck (but you can back at a higher level to get physical copies of both).

The HST.3.33, a Third-Party CY_BORG Musical Interlude Kickstarter is Phil's latest offering.

The 22.08" x 10.48" double-sided pocket map ($12 reward) featuring game content, and the lathe-cut record ($36, $50, and $62 rewards) are both exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign and will not be offered in this form again. We may release the game and music content in other physical formats in the future, but they will not appear again in the versions introduced through this project.

The digital edition -- both game content and music -- will be released as free downloads if this campaign is successfully funded.

Kickstarter - Plague Grave, a Soundscape for Fantasy RPGs by Philip Reed

Five tracks and five short encounter seeds that a GM may string together. A source of inspiration for many fantasy RPGs!

For those that don't know, Phil Reed is the Grand Master of low-cost RPG-related Kickstarters. Plague Grave is no exception, as you can get all of the material (soundscape and encounter hooks) in digital format for a buck. Sure, you can pay more for physical content, but the minimal buy-in is the price of a can of Coke - or less.

Welcome to Plague Grave, a soundscape for use with most fantasy roleplaying games. This five-track album includes a single encounter hook for each track, and a GM may string all five together to form a short adventure. As a systemless work, most gamemasters can adapt the ideas to almost any roleplaying game of their choice.

Once the Kickstarter campaign is complete, I'll release the digital edition of Plague Grave as a free PDF and MP3s. Supporting this project at the $1 reward level is purely to show that you enjoy my work and like to see these oddball, out-of-the-ordinary creative efforts succeed. I'll release the free digital edition at DrivethruRPG and itch.io.

In addition to being free and to download and use, the five tracks included in the Plague Grave digital edition will be available for use as royalty-free music in your podcasts and streaming sessions. All I ask is that you credit me and link to either the Plague Grave page at DrivethruRPG or itch.io.

Kickstarter - Strange Citizens of the City, a Third-Party Mörk Borg Book (by Phil Reed)

Phil Reed is one of my favorite Kickstarter creators. His work is always top-notch and one time (or early) and you can usually buy-in for the PDF version of his latest project for real cheap - in this case Strange Citizens of the City, a Third-Party Mörk Borg Book (by Phil Reed) can be snagged - with stretch goals - for a single buck!

I own the Mörk Borg RPG in print, and while I'm not sure I'd run it, it oozes with inspiration that I could (and will) use in my net OSR campaign.

From the Kickstarter page:

NOTE: The $1 PDF reward includes Strange Citizens of the City in PDF and, if the stretch goals are unlocked, the two other 32-page zines.

When the third-party Mörk Borg license was released (find the license here), I knew I would have to craft something for use under the game's delightfully light and streamlined engine. Personally, I prefer roleplaying game systems that do not block the gamemaster's creativity . . . and getting out of the way of creativity is exactly what Mörk Borg does.

The game's openness to imaginative play suits me perfectly. Add to that the game's visual design and there was no way my mind was going to let me ignore the existence of that third-party license.

Strange Citizens of the City is a 32-page 5.5" x 8.5" zine that will be printed at Mixam. This is a digital mockup and is not 100% accurate. The finished booklet will vary slightly in appearance. Color and graphic details may change in small ways.

Strange Citizens of the City is a collection of characters, possibly monsters, and was written to assist the gamemaster in populating the game world. The characters described within the pages of this slim booklet are divided into three categories:

Strange Citizens of the City, a 2d6 table to characters and the bulk of the book. Each of these eleven different characters fills a two-page spread and offers background info on the character that the GM may run with or ignore. (twenty-two pages)

Hired Goons, a 1d8 table of minor characters who are far less detailed than those characters described in the previous section of the book. At times, the 2d6 characters within the Strange Citizens of the City chapter will list "hired goons" as a special ability of sorts. When that happens, feel free to select a few of those goons from this section. (four pages)

(Possibly) Harmless Wanderers, 2d6 characters that are mostly intended as bizarre encounters the player characters may stumble into when walking the city streets. These characters include no game statistics and are purely descriptive. (four pages)

And that is it! When we add the front and back covers, we reach the book's total of thirty-two pages and have no more space left to discuss. Strange Citizens of the City could technically be used with almost any fantasy roleplaying game -- so long as the gamemaster isn't afraid of adapting concepts and inventing the stats necessary to use the characters with other games -- but it works best with Mörk Borg.

Simply good stuff :)
