I've said this before, and I'll say it again - Gylnn Seal (AKA Monkeyblood) is one of the most skilled RPG professional creators in the business. Writing, artwork, mapping, layout, you name it - he's one of the best.
Ryecroft: A Dangerous Cemetery Crawl is Glynn's latest Kickstarter. While not explicitly set in the Midderlands, it will fit right in (or likely fit most any old-school setting.)
The Midderlands is Glynn Seal's baby. I have backed every Kickstarter he's run and have all his work in print & PDF. I've enjoyed his art and maps in the products of many other publishers, and I consider Glynn a friend.
The Midderlands is an old-school game setting with bestiary for use with old-school role-playing games. It is based on Swords & Wizardry Complete, but could easily be used with other old-school systems and even non-OSR systems such as D&D or Pathfinder.
It is a green-hued, dark-fantasy, late-middle ages, early-renaissance view through grime-smeared spectacles. The setting itself is based on an area in the middle of England near where I live called The Midlands. Many of the locations are loosely based on reality, but others are pure fantasy from an addled mind.
The setting part of the book contains something I call "game-juice". Not heavy of history and monotonous detail, but enough to get the game-juices flowing and let the game master twist and tweak as they need to in order to fit their campaign.
Glynn has a Kickstarter in the works, and we will do our best to get him on The Tavern's YouTube channel for a live it does kick off.
If you don't already have The Midderlands—OSR Bestiary and Setting (and you should), don't miss out on the chance to get the PDF for 8 bucks instead of the usual 20 (still a bargain for the content you get).
First things first - Glynn Seal is one of the most generous, both in his time and his work, creatives in the OSR, if not tabletop gaming as a whole. As a mapper, an artist, a creative, and a writer, in the field of OSR fantasy creation he has no peers. He is the very definition of the Renaissance Man, and I am very happy to call Glynn a friend.
After saying all that, Gylnn's Midderlands setting is probably THE setting in the OSR that I am dying to run. I've backed each of Glynn's Kickstarters, but if you haven't backed all of Glynn's Kickstarters, the currentThe Midderlands Bundle of Holding is the answer you've been waiting for.
Adventurer! This all-new Midderlands Bundle presents The Midderlands, the grim, green, grime-smeared old-school tabletop fantasy roleplaying campaign setting from MonkeyBlood Design. Designed by ENnie-winning writer-artist-cartographer Glynn Seal, the Midderlands setting is a green-hued, dark-fantasy, late-Middle Ages, early-Renaissance land based on Glynn's home in the United Kingdom, the Midlands. Many Midderlands locations are grounded in reality, others pure fantasy from the designer's fevered imagination. This atmospheric (not to say fetid) sandbox setting adapts easily to any Old School Revival rules set such as Old-School Essentials, Swords & Wizardry, and many other Dungeons & Dragons retroclones, or you can add any of the horrific Midderlands monsters, weird locations, and beautiful maps to your own campaign. (The sewers. We recommend the sewers.)
For just US$14.95 you get all three titles in our Starter Collection (retail value $60) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete Midderlands OSR Setting and Bestiary corebook, The Midderlands Expanded, and The City of Great Lunden.
And if you pay more than the threshold price of $30.33, you'll level up and also get our entire Bonus Collection with seven more titles worth an additional $70, including Adventures in Great Lunden, Fighting Folk of the Haven Isles, Folk Magic of the Haven Isles, Bats of Saint Abbans, Chewer of Fingers, Behind the Walls, and Rivers and Lakes.

The City of Great Lunden is a city setting for use with old school roleplaying games. It is designed to be used alongside The Midderlands setting and hence is 'The Midderlands Compatible'. Game stats are presented for use with Swords & Wizardry Complete, which means they are easily adopted for old school games/retroclones. Much of the content is designed to be as system-neutral as possible, so feel free to use it with any fantasy game system you like.
This book DOES NOT require The Midderlands setting, but it is greatly enhanced with it. There might be references to things found in the other books. Don't worry if you don't have those previous settings books, you can still get them here.

The Midderlands is probably the best setting book I've come across in my years as a gamer. Yep, even better than Greyhawk & The Forgotten Realms IMHO. Of recent releases, the Lost Lands is a close second. The setting is familiar yet completely different, and Glynn has supported the setting with further releases as well as a series of Midderzine releases - a zine for The Midderlands :)
44 pages. This is also known as The Lost Wyrld Issue, as its primary focus is on the wider Midderlands world setting.
Meet The Midderlander: John Alan Large.
More juicy rumours from The Haven Gazette.
Gloomium - the lowdown.
Currency thoughts.
Slightly Less S**t Lesser Rings.
The Lost Wyrld: The world of The Midderlands setting.
Races of the Lost World: A focus on the main S&W races with a Midderlands twist.
Treasures of the Lost Wyrld.
Issue #7
24 pages.
Meet The Midderlander: Pete Day.
More juicy rumours from The Haven Gazette.
Drakekin - the OSR Dragonborn.
Three Drakekin NPCs.
New Oddities for Drakekin.
Upper Wychbray: A riverside settlement on the edges of Linkern Wolds.
Slightly Less S**t Scrolls.
Did I mention that The Midderlands, while an OSR setting, is written for Swords & Wizardry?
Or that Glynn is just an awesome person and deserves your support? Well, he is and he does.

Back at the start of the pandemic, we had an earlier attempt at Kickstarting Midderlands 5e. It was horrible timing. No, six months later we are still in the midst of the pandemic, but questions of personal financing have mostly resolved. Now we have a second chance at a D&D 5e Midderlands. 5e players best take notice, this is a setting like none other.
I own the Swords & Wizardry version of the Midderlands, the expansions, and every other Kickstarter Monkeyblood has published in the interval. Glynn simply does amazing stuff and I'm excited to see the Midderlands open up beyond the OSR to the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons with the Midderlands 5e Kickstarter.
Quick note: Midderlands 5e is being published and distributed by Necromancer Games, a sister company of Frog God Games. I am affiliated with Frog God Games as I work the table at conventions and wrote Swords & Wizardry Light. All that doesn't change the fact that the Midderlands is awesome!

A grim old-school adventure for The Midderlands setting intended as a low-level one-shot. Generally usable for all old-school games.
When it comes to old school gaming Kickstarters, Midderlands releases are then high watermark that other Kickstarter are judged against. I also love low-level adventures. Chewer of Fingers looks to be a lot of fun.
Chewer of Fingers is a grim, old-school introductory adventure intended for The Midderlands setting. The adventure is written for Swords & Wizardry and therefore can be used in all retro-clones and old school role-playing games with little or no work. The book contains swear words and mature themes.
If you know anything about The Midderlands fantasy setting, you will see information within the book that makes it directly usable with The Midderlands setting. It is 100% compatible.
The encounters in the adventure take place in and around the small hamlet of Fetterstone—a depressing place on the edge of a stinking marsh near the border between the Western Midderlands and Staffershire.
The PCs are heading to Fetterstone because there is a 20 gold quid reward for the capture of an escaped criminal called ‘The Finger Chewer'. He absconded from Middlemoor Gaol five days ago and is believed to be hiding out in the surrounding oft-foggy marsh. The marsh is notoriously dangerous and even the lure of 20 gold quids isn’t enough to entice the locals into its fetid clutches.
The adventure is A5-sized (148mm wide x 210mm high OR Approx. 5.8" wide x 8.3" high) containing 24 interior pages (+2 printed inside cover pages).
The adventure features 4 encounter areas: Old Lady Harris' Farm, The Village of Fetterstone and the Gloombug Tavern, Middlemoor Gaol, and The Marsh.
Four pregenerated adventurers are provided: Solomon Pilkington (Level 2 Human Cleric of Gael), Dergal Pock (Level 2 Wart Goblin Fighter), Norris Hitchcock (Level 2 Half-elf magic-User), and Elspeth Fallows (Level 2 Human Thief).
6 beautiful hand-drawn and scanned maps. These will also be provided as seperate unlabelled VTT versions with the PDF download.
The adventure is littered with extra details (game-juice) and adventure hooks that make this suitable for additional future adventures. Any Game Master could take the information contained and use it for their own campaigns.

I love everything that Glynn has put out for his Midderlands setting. It is, to put it quite simply, extremely useful and an easy read. Needless to say, his latest Kickstarter -Folk Magic of the Haven Isles I backed the moment I learned about it.
Folk Magic of the Haven Isles is a role-playing supplement for old school role-playing games. Its focus is on magicians, wizards and magic-users. The book is written for Swords & Wizardry and therefore can be used in all retro-clones and old school role-playing games with little or no work.
But I don't have or play any old school role-playing games. Is it still useful?
Absolutely. It is intended for any fantasy role-playing games to inspire and provide ideas for players and Game Masters alike. If you know what HD and Saving Throws are, you will be easily able to understand and adapt most of the rules-related content in this book.
If you know anything about The Midderlands fantasy setting, you will see information within the book that makes it directly usable with The Midderlands setting. It is 100% compatible.
If not, don't worry! You don't need to know anything. There is a glossary that explains what any unfamiliar (mainly geographical) words/terms are. In your own setting, you can just swap out place names.
An A5-sized (148mm wide x 210mm high OR Approx. 5.8" wide x 8.3" high) containing 60 interior pages comprising 19 pages of evocative, full colour illustrations.
14 Magic-User sub-classes, such as the Peller, Hermetic Magician, Demon Slave, Toadman, Spae Wife, Stitch Witch, Green Child, and Apple Queen/King. These sub-classes are 'overlays' that are intended to be used in conjunction with the magic-user class, giving them benefits, drawbacks and flavour.
16 Magic-User backgrounds such as the Arcane Gloombugger, Cultist, Goblin Stinkbinder, and Stone Tender. Unique and flavourful micro-stories that make your magician unique and explain how they came to practice magic.
7 Tomes (spellbook ideas) such as the Little Key of the Whole Art of Hydromancy. Ideas for spellbooks that can be the goals of magician's quests.
16 Magical Spells such as Gloomray, Transmute Lead into Gold, Enforce Queueing, and more. Usable in any old school game.
4 Oddities of the Haven Isles. Unusual objects, flora, and fauna such as the Mandrake and Wizard Hole.
If you are a regular reader of The Tavern, you've seen me talk about the Midderlands before. It's Glynn Seal's "weird fantasy" setting and was written with the OSR in mind. This time around the Midderlands are getting the 5e treatment, and I couldn't be happier.
Fifth Edition needs a setting that breaks the mold and yet feels familiar, and the Midderlands 5e Kickstarter will do just that. There's a whole world of future Midderlands fans that will be introduced to Glynn's work through this Kickstarter and I couldn't be happier.
This Kickstarter is being run by Frog Gd Games under its Necromancer Games subsidiary label.
20 bucks for the PDF, for bucks (plus shipping) for the Print plus PDF.
The Midderlands 5e Necromancer Games is proud to team up with Glynn Seal to bring the ENnie Award winning Swords & Wizardry weird fantasy setting, the Midderlands, to Fifth Edition. This strange and wondrous setting is edgy and twisted and will make a perfect addition for those looking for something new and challenging for their home campaigns. The Fifth Edition version comes with a ton of new art, a fresh layout, and updated maps. It still has all the green style of the original!
Words from the Author
The Midderlands exists because of a series of fortunate thoughts.
It was mid-late 2016 and often I would go around to my partner’s house on the evenings and whilst she sat on the sofa watching the television, I doodled the heads of strange creatures in side profile.
I had no plan for these doodles, but I had a sketchbook and I wanted to fill quite a lot of it. As I doodled, I imagined that these creatures might live in the surrounding lands where I lived. That gave them much more life. I then thought I cou
ld create a book of creatures with a little about where they live and what they do. Then I figured that rather than living in the land where I do now, why not an alternate version of where I live. It would be a bit weirder, darker, gloomier. I wanted something that made the land the way it did. That’s when Gloomium became a thing.
The locations would be inspired by the real world, but twisted and green-tinged, so I needed a map. I made an alternative version and that’s when I decided this was a game setting.
-------
The creation of the initial setting book for old school games – the 5E version of which is being crowdfunded here – spawned another book which covered the rest of the United Kingdom, and then a further book which focused on the setting’s version of London, Great Lunden.
I have been amazed with its success and wanted to bring a version of the original to the 5E audience, so they too could enjoy wandering its twisted locales and encounter its unusual creatures. I just wasn’t sure how to achieve it.
Luckily, the kindly amphibians at Necromancer Games came to the rescue and we are now in a great position to bring a new version of the setting to you. My hands will be heavily involved in new and updated artwork and maps and a new layout.
This is going to be exciting and you won’t want to miss out. —Glynn
Today was a busy day and I almost missed that The Midderlands Expanded is the Deal of the Day. As I type this, there are about 11 hours left to get on this deal. Did I mention that Glynn Seal is for real? Truly amazing stuff. Normally 15.72, the PDF is currently available for a mere 3.10
This book is an expansion to The Midderlands - An OSR Setting & Bestiary
Important Note: This book contains some content already found in The Midderlands Additions, and The Midderlands Additions II supplements. It also contains lots of new content not published already.
Contains Strong language & Graphic Descriptions
Written for use with the Swords & Wizardry Complete roleplaying game, but suitable for any Old-School D&D-style roleplaying game.
More green-hued, twisted, dark-fantasy, old-school mini-setting. Now expanded to include the whole of the British Isles and beyond.
The first book (The Midderlands — An OSR Mini-setting & Bestiary) focused on the land-locked Midderlands, a twisted version of central England. This book expands the setting to include the whole of Havenland, Scrotland, Oldenwale, Emeraude, and beyond.
Learn about Bear Maw, Darkpool, H’sst-Akal, Middercastle, Queensmyr, Scar Burg, the Great Wall of Hadreen and many more locations.
Explore the shipwrecks of the coast, and be harried by Gloomcrabs, Sharkfolk, Leviathan Spawn and more.
Learn of the dangers of the neighbouring countries, Gaulandia and the Serpentlands. This book is full of more horrors and threats to the safety of not only the midderfolk, but havenfolk at large.
Sea monsters, threats of invasion, countrywide travel, island enclaves, and ship combat to name a few. This expanded setting gives more opportunity for adventure and who doesn’t love adventure?
The first book focused on the land-locked Midderlands, an area I know well. In terms of a campaign area, it is small – approximately 45 miles by 35 miles – which allows for a feeling of close ties and for the actions of the player characters to have a tangible influence. I have been to Haven’s End, Ill Faircombe, Blymouth, Great Lunden, Windsour, Caer Oldenwale, Bellthorp… the list goes on. I realised that I know quite a bit about some of the other locations around my fair island home. I love the sea, the rugged hills and mountains of Oldenwale, and I frequently take trips to Bear Maw. I realised I could use the same approach as I used in The Midderlands to twist and mould other locations, and finally make my way to the seas and discover the other landmasses at its borders.
Ports, shipwrecks, Gaulandia, Scrotland, Oldenwale, Emeraude, and the Serpentlands could all be used to make the setting larger and introduce more alarming horrors and threats to the safety of not only the midderfolk, but havenfolk at large. Sea monsters, threats of invasion, countrywide travel, island enclaves, ship combat to name a few. An expanded setting gave more opportunity for adventure and who doesn’t love adventure?
I'm a sucker for settings. Even more so, I'm a huge sucker for city settings, because I can never wrap my head around it enough to properly write one up on my own.
Monkeyblood does amazing maps. His Midderlands setting is probably one of the best EVER in the hobby. With The City of Great Lunden, Glynn gives us a city set in the Midderlands. Awesome!
The book itself will be 224 pages of great, city-based, game-juice, all in glorious, high specification, hardback and/or digital format. Here's how the current content is looking:
Introduction - includes a short story focused on the pre-generated characters.
The City of Great Lunden - A touch of history, details of the inner wards, outer wards, and beyond the outer wards.
The streets, law and order, defences, waste, etc.
22 detailed structures comprising a full page elevation view art piece, a page of floorplans/maps, and a page of information about the structure.
The Great Thameswater river
Beneath the city (sewers)
Above the streets (rooftops) - Includes rules for rooftop adventures
Oddities - more magic items, spells, flora, and fauna.
Bestiary
Some factions, guilds and institutions and notable NPCs
With apologies to Thad. This past week has simply had a life of its own.
In collaboration with MonkeyBlood Design (Glynn Seal)I am proud to present a new OSR patch for the Ennie award winning Middlerlands.
The setting itself is based on an area in the middle of England called The Midlands. Many of the locations are loosely based on reality, but others are pure fantasy from an addled mind.
Patches are available now! All OSR patches have an iron on backing, 100% digital embroidery coverage and merrowed edges.
To order ANY OSR patch send $6 per patch to: paypal.me/thaddeusgmoore
Free Shipping world wide from the USA is included in this price. Please make a note specifying which designs you would like and ensure your shipping address is correct in your PayPal account info. Thanks to all of you in the OSR community for your camaraderie and support.
This popped up in my Facebook feed last night and I nearly lept out of bed to share it. Of course, that never happened as sleep overtook me ;)
In any case, I'm picking up Midderzine #1 in Print & PDF - because I can't wait on the mail to come to me...
This is a fanzine for The Midderlands campaign setting for old school games. Although The Midderlands was written for Swords & Wizardry Complete, it works with all the old school games and retroclones with little or no conversion. Hell, you can even adopt it for any fantasy roleplaying game.
Within this issue you can find news articles, information about locations, NPCs, monsters, races, classes, oddities, spells, flora, fauna, and just about anything to do with the Midderlands, the Haven Isles, and further afield.
IN THIS ISSUE:
More fodder for your ‘The Midderlands’ OSR campaign setting.
Rumours from The Haven Gazette.
Details on the village of Stonecastle.
3 new monsters: The Catvile, Gloomrat, and Devil’s Goat.
The Crowmaster class.
New Oddities, Flora, and Fauna including: Catvile Spittle, Demonfeathers, and Plague Flies.
Just a quick reminder for folks that are interested in The Midderlands Expanded Kickstarter - you have three days left to back it if you haven't yet.
I have the original Midderlands and its probably one of the, if not "the", best setting books I've come across in nearly 40 years of gaming. +MonkeyBlood Design (Glynn Seal) and team did some amazing work and I'm expecting more of the same from The Midderlands Expanded.
Don't believe me? How about believing +Matt Finch :
“[The Midderlands] as a small area campaign supplement is the best I’ve ever seen, displacing Dave Arneson’s Blackmoor First Fantasy Campaign area, which up until now -- and that’s decades -- has been my favorite one.” - Matt Finch (Creator of Swords & Wizardry).
What is going to be in the new 'The Midderlands Expanded' book?
50+ pages of content previously released in The Midderlands Additions, and The Midderlands Additions II, but as part of a glorious, high specification, hardback format.
Approx. 170 pages of new, previously unseen content.

Yeah, its "that good."
But if you have The Midderlands, what does the Expansion add?
Firstly, and most-importantly - This is not a revised version, this is EVEN MORE content and game-juice.
The Midderlands setting gets bigger, expanding out into Havenland (the country that The Midderlands is set in) and its bordering lands, in a dark, twisted, and viridian version of the British Isles.
If you want to know a bit more about the original 'The Midderlands' setting book, then check out the original Kickstarter for more information, or watch my interview with the creator of Swords & Wizardry, Matt Finch.

More locations.
More items.

More classes.
More adventure hooks.
More adventure.
More discovery.
More green-hued, dark-fantasy weirdness.
Yep. There's lots more of the good stuff.
Then there's the list of those involved. In addition to Glynn, you have: Edwin Nagy (Writing), Mark Nolan (Writing), Jim Magnusson (Artwork), Juan Ochoa (Artwork), Steve Punter (Artwork) and Matthew Pook (Editing).
Some of these names should be very familiar to old School Gamers.
