Bundle of Holding - The One Ring™ 2E

I'm excited to see The One Ring 2e RPG at Bundle of Holding. I'm looking forward to snagging the Starter Collection and Bonus Collection.

Strider Mode allows for solo gaming. Hmmmm.

Adventurer! The One Ring™ Second Edition (2022) from Free League Publishing is the official tabletop roleplaying game based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Designed specifically to evoke the atmosphere of The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™, the game contains rules for creating heroes and sending them off on adventures in Eriador, west of the Misty Mountains – a land threatened by the growing Shadow. This new offer brings you the beautifully illustrated full-color The One Ring 2E rules set plus recent sourcebooks and adventures for a great price.

For just US$7.95 you get all five titles in our Starter Collection (retail value $46) as DRM-free .PDFs, including the complete The One Ring Second Edition Core Rules (plus the Character Lifepaths and Peoples of Wilderland), along with two titles previously in our February 2023 One Ring Starter Bundle: the Loremaster's Screen & Rivendell Compendium and the Strider Mode solitaire rules.

And if you pay more than the threshold price of $18.67, you'll level up and also get two more supplements worth an additional $40: Gareth Hanrahan's location guide Ruins of the Lost Realm and its companion adventure anthology, Tales from the Lone-lands.

Bundle of Holding - The One Ring™ 2E

I own the Starter Set of The One Ring 2e as a physical box, and it is a thing of beauty. The fact that it is written by our community's very own James Spahn is simply icing on the cake.

Well, I may already own the Start Set in physical, but I'd love to have it in PDF for my iPad. Solo rules with Strider Mode? I'm sold :)

The One Ring Starter Collection is $12.95 in PDF.

Adventurer! The One Ring™ Starter Bundle brings you .PDF ebooks of The One Ring Starter Set and recent supplements for The One Ring tabletop roleplaying game from Sophisticated Games and Free League Publishing. Explore the Shire as the hobbits whose children will go on to do extraordinary things, such as Drogo Baggins, Rory Brandybuck, and Esmeralda Took. With streamlined rules, ready-made characters, and a tight focus, The One Ring Starter Set makes it easy for new (and maybe younger) players to take their first steps into JRR Tolkien's Middle-earth.

The One Ring Starter Set Shire mapFor just US$12.95 you get all three digital downloads in our The One Ring Starter Collection (retail value $35) as DRM-free ebooks, including the complete The One Ring Starter Set, the Loremaster's Screen and Rivendell Compendium, and Strider™ Mode, a rules expansion for solitaire roleplaying across northern Eriador.

Kickstarter - The One Ring Second Edition Raises OVER 2 Million USC!

Time to take a step back and simply look in awe upon The One Ring Second Edition Kickstarter, which raised $2,007,067.12 USC.

Yes. Over 2 million bucks.

16,596 backers.

I suspect we'll be hearing a lot from the Free League in the near future.

A huge congrats to all of those involved in the project, but a special shout out to our very own James Spahn, who was signed to write The One Ring Second Edition Starter Set.

Damn you all!

I may stray from strict OSR yet! ;)

Kickstarter - The One Ring™ Roleplaying Game, Second Edition

A new edition of the roleplaying game set in the world of The Lord of the Rings™
by J.R.R. Tolkien, designed by Francesco Nepitello.

Full confession - I never played The One Ring, although I have only heard good things about it. Heck, I only own in PDF. So, when I heard there was a second edition of the game in the works after Cubicle 7 lost its license, I was intrigued to see what was in the works.

Well, I've been following The One Ring Second Edition Kickstarter since its launch, and with 14 days left in the funding period, it has crossed the $1,000,000 US.

Yep, you read that right. Apparently, I wasn't the only one intrigued by the new edition.

Now, another true confession. My good friend James Spahn wrote The One Ring Starter Box. That, for me, was the icing on the cake. No more fence-sitting for me, I'm all in :)

The One Ring™ is a roleplaying game based on The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™, two extraordinary works of fiction by the beloved author and respected academic, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, published in partnership with Sophisticated Games.

First released in 2011, its award-winning design was hailed as the best attempt at bringing Middle-earth to the gaming table to date, thanks to its thematic rules and painstaking attention to detail. For 10 years, players of the game have traveled far and wide across Middle-earth, adventuring for multiple decades of game time.

Today, it is time for the game to enter a new era – this new edition of The One Ring brings players further into the Twilight of the Third Age with a new hardbound volume, presenting:

A set of updated and streamlined rules, developed thanks to years of players’ feedback and raising the game to the standards of quality that have made Free League so popular.

A new setting to experience – the Lone-lands of Eriador in the year is 2965 of the Third Age. This is a vast land that once saw the glory of the North Kingdom of the DĂșnedain.

A complete visual redesign of art and graphics, offering a view of Middle-earth that is fresh and familiar at the same time.

The new edition will be compatible with modules for the first edition, requiring only minor tweaking.

Created for the first time for this edition of the game, the Starter Set contains everything you need to start playing, and more! Focused on the Shire, this set allows for new players to enter the world of Middle-earth from the land of the Hobbits, where all the stories began. A number of pre-generated characters allow players to take the road to adventure in no time. The boxed set, mainly written by seasoned RPG writer James Spahn, includes:

Condensed rules, including everything you need to start playing in Middle-earth.

An adventure compendium, presenting a number of adventures to be played using the pre-generated characters contained in the box.

Pre-generated characters of esteemed Hobbits like Drogo Baggins, Paladin Took, Primula Brandybuck or Lobelia Baggins, and more.

Cubicle 7 Loses Middle Earth License - The One Ring 2nd Edition Cancelled

From the Cubicle 7 website:

Date Posted: 27-11-2019

UNEXPECTED TOR2 UPDATE

‘I am with you at present,’ said Gandalf, ‘but soon I shall not be. I am not coming to the Shire.’

We have some very unfortunate and unexpected news to share. Contractual differences arose recently which we have been unable to resolve, and so we have decided to end our licensing agreement with Sophisticated Games. It is with regret that we have made this very tough decision to withdraw.

This means we will cease publishing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle-earth™ in the first half of 2020. Unfortunately, this doesn’t give us enough time to release the much-anticipated The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game second edition.

As many of you know, our first edition of The One Ring is eight years old, and we had high hopes of a full product line to support our second edition. Our team have worked incredibly hard on this new edition; with many of the announced titles already written and edited, so being very close to completion makes this decision even harder.

Although we were very close to the finish line when these issues arose, as gamers ourselves we did not feel it was right for the game, or fair to you, to release a new edition which we would be unable to support.

We appreciate how passionate so many of you are, especially those who have followed our journey from first edition or have pre-ordered the second edition. Thank you for your support over the years.

Pre-orders and refunds
Our immediate priority is to make the refunding process as easy as possible for those who pre-ordered from us. We understand your frustration and we sincerely apologise for this disappointment. If you pre-ordered The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game (standard or collector’s edition) or Rohan Region Guide directly from our webstore, you should have already received an email from us detailing your options and outlining any action required on your part.

We will be refunding you completely, or alternatively we would like to offer you 125% of the value of your order in Cubicle 7 store credit as a gesture of goodwill. This credit can be used across all of our other lines and future products. While those who pre-ordered Rohan Region Guide will have already received the PDF version, we will not be printing this title and you will also receive a full refund.

We are commencing our Black Friday offers today which include 50% off current The One Ring first edition stock and 30% off Adventures in Middle-earth™ stock, see our webstore for more information.

If you have not received an email, please contact us as soon as possible at info@cubicle7games.com.
If you wish to receive a full refund, you do not need to respond to the email, we will automatically process your full refund within the next 14 days.
If you wish to opt for 125% store credit, please reply to the email stating this by December 4th and we will arrange your credit.
If you ordered from your local games store, please contact them directly as we cannot comment on third party pre-orders.
We would ask that you bear with us as we do our best to organise these refunds as efficiently as we can, but it is a considerable administrative task as we have a substantial amount of web store pre-orders to manually process.

Thanks to our team
We would like to thank our talented team for their amazing work on The One Ring – The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game, including our producer, editor, artists, graphic designers, sales and marketing team, and all the freelancers involved.

Any freelancers with outstanding work on these lines who have not been contacted by C7, please contact their usual contact immediately.

Thanks for your support
We have enjoyed sharing glimpses of our vision for The One Ring second edition over the last number of months, and we are disappointed that we cannot bring our extensive plans to fruition. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all once again for your incredible support, patience and understanding in this matter.

What’s next?
This year has been Cubicle 7’s most successful year to date. We have been awarded funding from the Irish Government to support our continued development, and have recruited new staff to our passionate and dedicated team.

Work continues on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, led by our new WFRP Producer PĂĄdraig  Murphy. The PDF of Enemy in Shadows Companion will be released imminently. We are excited to continue working on Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, Warhammer 40,000: Wrath & Glory, Lone Wolf and Doctor Who.

We are looking forward to 2020, which is shaping up to be our busiest year yet with many exciting releases planned!

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 99 - LotR RPG Bundle, Torchwood Bundle and More

My ass is dragging this morning. But hey, sleeping from 5 am to 10 am is perfectly normal...
My internal clock is doing a flashback of two years and thinks I'm working overnights - oh my! Humble Bundle has a LotR RPG Bundle as well as a Torchwood / Dr Who Audio Book Bundle. Did I mention there is a Munchkin StarFinder release on the horizon?

Bundle of Holding - The Strange and The One Ring

I've been remiss in checking out the recent Bundle of Holding offerings. I'm trying to rectify that now ;)

The One Ring has just over 3 days left to go. For 15 bucks you get The One Ring Roleplaying Game and the Loremaster's Screen and Lake-Town Guide. For 32 bucks you get to add in The Darkening of Mirkwood, The Heart of the Wild, Rivendell and Tales From Wilderland. Rivendell even has our very own +James Spahn as a contributor.

The Strange just hit the Bundle of Holding (It's got 10 days left to go.) For 10 bucks you get The Strange, The Strange Player's Guide, In Translation: The Strange Character Options and Swordbreakers. For under 21 bucks you get to add in Worlds Numberless and Strange, The Strange Bestiary, The Strange GM Screen, The Dark Spiral, Eschatology Code, The Estate Dossiers and When Worlds Collide.

I literally have nothing of either game, but I've heard good stuff about each. Actually, I've heard more about The Strange than it's older sibling, Numenera. Hopefully I don't have to get someone to clean up The Strange PDFs like I did Numenera (it was pretty much unreadable for me.)

James Spahn Holds First 3 Spots on RPGNow's Hottest Titles List

In all my years of blogging and covering RPGs (especially Old School RPGs) I don't recall a writer ever holding the top three sales spots at RPGNow.

This evening, +James Spahn has the honor.

James is one of the authors of The One Ring - Ruins of the North and the writer and publisher of White Box Treasures and White Box Companion, both for Swords & Wizardry.

Now I need to work on reviews of James' two White Box releases...

The One Ring PDFs Are Pulled From RPGNow

Still available in paper - for now...
It appears that all of The One Ring PDFs have been pulled from RPGNow, and it looks like they are unavailable anywhere else.

Yep, it looks like WotC's lawyers have now infected the Tolkien Estate and by extension Cubicle 7.  Because, as you well know, offering your product in a digital format means thievery. Which must be why RPGNow does such great business.

This is in addition to Cubicle 7 canceling the GenCon Book release of The One Ring Collection: GenCon 2012 Edition.

No stated details as to the why for either, but with licensed products there are always too many cooks involved in the process.

First Look - The One Ring (LotR): Adventures over the Edge of the Wild

Cubicle 7 just released The One Ring:  Adventures Over the Edge of the Wild in PDF on RPGNow.  I suspect it has released at GenCon in print, but one of my fellow bloggers that is in attendance will need to verify that.

It includes an Adventurer's Book, a Loremaster's Book and maps for each.

The game uses specialized D6 and D12 dice, but it's easy enough to substitute your own (standard) dice.

One thing of note is that gameplay is divided into two phases: The Adventure Phase and the Fellowship Phase.  The Adventure Phase is what we generally do doing our RPG sessions - kill things, take their stuff, overcome problems, etc.  The Fellowship phase seems to be what most gamers would do between sessions, kinda off the grid.  I need to read further to see how these would work in play.

I've barely scratched the surface, and I still need to spend more time with The Tome of Horrors Complete for S&W ;)

From the blurb:

Smaug has been defeated, the Battle of Five Armies has been won, and Bilbo has returned to the Shire. The War of the Ring is several generations away. In the relative peace, the Free Peoples of Wilderland look beyond their borders for the first time, establishing trade routes, renewing bonds between their cultures, and bringing prosperity to the region of northern Mirkwood, the Lonely Mountain, and the eastern slopes of the Misty Mountains.
But much danger still remains, and from the Orc-holds of the mountains to the dark and corrupt depths of Mirkwood a darkness waits, recovering its strength, laying its plans, and slowly extending its shadow . . . .
The One Ring: Adventures over the Edge of the Wild is the newest fantasy roleplaying game set in the world of The HobbitTM and The Lord of the RingsTM. It provides you with everything you need to begin your adventures in Middle-earth, including:
  • 192 page Adventurer's Book
  • 144 page Loremaster's Book
  • Two 22"x17" maps
Adventures over the Edge of the Wild is the first core set for The One Ring roleplaying game. Set five years after the events narrated in The Hobbit, it introduces players to the world of Middle-earth focusing on Wilderland, the region visited by Bilbo in his journey to the Lonely Mountain. Future core and supplemental publications will advance the timeline and explore other areas of Middle-earth.
