Review - Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 (PWYW OSR Adventurr)

Looking for a short, low-level distraction for your group? Maybe something to run at a gaming convention in a 3 to 4-hour time slot.? Look no further than Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 from Throwi Games.

I ran Under Tenkar's Tavern this morning at Central NY Con. With character generation for a party of six characters (using Swords & Wizardry Light), we brought the first level of the dungeon to a successful conclusion in about 3 1/2 hours. Objective achieved and fun had by all.

I would expect the full 3 levels to play out in about two sessions in a home campaign, with enough story hooks to keep your group coming back for more.

Priced at PWYW pricing, I'd give Under Tenkar's Tavern 4 1/2 beer steins. It's short, sweet, and easy to prep, and the price is right :)

Free OSR - Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3

Hey! Do you wanna adventure under Tenkar's Tavern? Written for Swords & Wizardry Light by Thom Wilson and published by Throwi Games, Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 is priced at PWYW. Hmmm, I should run this at a convention...

Under Tenkar's Tavern, Levels 1-3 for Swords & Wizardry

Once a boisterous and popular bar, Tenkar’s Tavern has recently become a place shrouded in mystery and despair. Members of the kitchen staff have disappeared and have not returned in several days. Additional hired hands have also since gone missing. An empty kitchen means unhappy customers and the barkeep Nerik is losing money! He needs outside help to solve his dilemma. Can the adventurers help find the kitchen staff or the source of the tavern’s problems?

An Adventure for three to six characters of 1st or 2nd level, designed for Swords & Wizardry TM by Matthew J. Finch.

Swords & Wizardry Light - 8 Page Digest Sized Booklet

I found the following bouncing around the internet, and it looks beautiful. Nothing special, but with Swords & Wizardry Light technically out of print, this 8-page layout is easy on the eyes and nice and clean in appearance.

Continual Light "Proof Copy" in Hand - The Time is Getting Near!

My "Proof Copy" of Continual Light arrived today, and damn it looks good. I'll pour over it for the next few days to make sure everything is up to snuff, but no longer will I hear "the layout is serviceable" ;)

Jeff Jones did an amazing job with the layout. 33 pages of rules. Nice and clean.

I'll update when we have firmed up the release (likely through Kickstarter)

Damn, but it's hard to line up these actual pics properly ;)

Torchlight #1 Will be Available in Print at GameHole!

Thanks to the talents of Jeff Jones, a limited print run of Torchlight Issue #1 will be available at GameHole Con later this month. Seek out Jeff or myself to purchase a copy.

Work continues on Swords & Wizardry Continual Light Digest Edition. Hopefully, it will be ready by Christmas. We also plan to do a limited print run before moving to POD in 2022.

As SWCL wraps up, work will commence on Torchlight Issue #2.

The Full Color Cover for the Swords & Wizardry Continual Light Digest Edition is Simply Stunning!

James Shields literally outdid himself. Hell, he outdid just about every fantasy artist out there. That's not a slight of any of the other amazing artists, but James took his game to Eleven and it shows.

I hope to have a few print copies in time for GameHole. There is the possibility of me wearing a shirt with this stunning art too :)

Did I mention James has a Patreon, so other small publishers can share some of James' amazing art in their projects?

Cover Art is Inked for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light 2nd Edition - James Shields is an Amazing Artist

I couldn't be happier with the results of James Shields' work on the cover for Swords & Wizardry Continual Light 2e. I can't wait to see the color version. It looks like I may need to add some content to reflect the cover art ;)

Good times and VERY exciting!

Torchlight Issue #1 has Released (Swords & Wizardry / SWL / SWCL Zine)

Well, it's finally here. All delays are mine and mine alone. There is a reason this will never be a Kickstarter project run by myself ;)

Torchlight Issue #1 has been released in PDF, with the hope of a limited run of print copies available at Shire Con. Definitely in time for GameHole. These will be printed by Mixam and the quality should be outstanding.

The cover price for Torchlight Issue #1 in PDF is 3 bucks for 36 pages, cover to cover. We have articles (and an adventure) from James Spahn, Michael "Bad Mike" Badolato, and John Healy II.

Glen Hallstrom did the cover and Jeff Jones did the layout.

Unlike the Torchlight Premiere Issue, this is a full-size zine :)

If you buy it via this link: Torchlight Issue #1 - you can snag a copy for 2 bucks. If you have purchased prior S&W releases from me, check your DTRPG email for potentially a deeper discount.

Additionally, I'm putting Swords & Wizardry Continual Light on sale for a buck via the link above - also normally 3 bucks. Work is commencing on a digest-sized version of SWCL - new layout, new art, new cover art, and a micro setting and adventure from James Spahn. Phew. Again, hoping to release it in time for GameHole with a limited print run, again via Mixam.

As always, thank you for the support. Work on Torchlight Issue #2 will commence after we wrap up the Digest Sized Edition of S&W Continual Light :)

Swords & Wizardry Continual Light 2nd Print, Digest Edition aiming for September 2021

As I announced earlier today on The Tavern's Youtube Channel, we will hopefully be releasing Swords & Wizardry Continual Light as a digest-sized edition in September 2021. It is a format that folks have been asking for since SWCL first released, and I'm happy to say I've assembled the right team to do such a project justice.

This will be a new printing but not a new edition. The rules will not be changing BUT there will be additional material, a professional layout, and new art.

James Spahn will be writing a micro-setting and introductory adventure. Think somewhere along the lines of B2. I'm totally stoked.

James Shields will be providing new cover art and a new Swords & Wizardry Continual Light logo.

Jeff Jones will be doing the layout. Jeff laid out Torchlight Issue #0 and he will be the layout artist when Torchlight Issue #1 releases, probably later this month.

Michael Gross will be editing the SWCL Digest Edition. Mike has (or is) worked (or is working) with Frog God Games, Troll Lord Games, Throwi Games, and others I've probably forgotten. Mike edited Torchlight Issue #0 and will also be editing Torchlight Issue #1.

Hopefully, I'll be able to add more names to this list in short order :)

We may add a basic magical items section to the rules. B&W or color art for the interior is currently being discussed.

Let me know what you think, tell me your wants and desires, and let's make this the Swords & Wizardry Continual Light that YOU want. :)

Deal of the Day - Swords & Wizardry Continual Light

Today's Deal of the Day is The Tavern's very own Swords & Wizardry Continual Light. Normally 3 bucks in PDF, for the next 24 hours it is only 1.20. Woot!

If you like old school RPGs but want a streamlined package, Continual Light was created with you in mind.

You remember, don't you? The sounds of battle heard through the clatter of dice? The shuffling of character sheets? The war stories shared with fellow campaigners?

There is a longing in the soul of every adventurer and though it sometimes fades to a whisper, you still hear it. Swords & Wizardry Continual Light marks your return to fantasy roleplaying - or if you're curious what fantasy gaming is all about, this is the perfect introduction.

This book, a twenty-sided die, and a few six-sided dice are all you need to return to the table, recall those halcyon days of heroism, and forge brand new legends! Welcome back!

What is Swords & Wizardry Continual Light? It is a streamlined version of the Swords & Wizardry rules many of you already love. You will recognixe some White Box and some Complete, but its all Swords & Wizardry.

It covers four core classes (and a bunch of optional ones), four races, seven levels of play (and optional rules to keep the game going after seventh level), magic items, spells, monsters and more - all in about 17 pages of rules.

Suiable for introducing new players to old school gaming or reintroducing a lapsed gamer, pefect for pick up games, convention play and yes - even campaigns.

The Origins of Swords & Wizardry Light or Ain't Retirement Grand?

I know I've posted about the origins of Swords & Wizardry Light in the past but there comes a time when you need to address certain falsehoods in the narrative making the rounds. So, here we are, back to the beginning. Strangely enough, the origins go back nearly three years to the day. Hold my beer, I need two hands to type ;)

Three years ago on St Patrick's Day, 2016, I signed out from work for the final time at 605 AM. I would run accumulated time and terminal leave for nearly four months, but for all effects and purposes, I was retired.

Retirement hits different people in different ways. A common theme is a need for a replacement time sink to work. You wouldn't think this would be needed. Not having to work is awesome! Work does, however, give one a purpose and I found myself in search of such purpose and lots of free time on my hands. Pub lunches and naps can only take one so far ;)

I started toying with the idea of a guerilla marketing ruleset for OSR gaming. Something that could be printed on a single sheet - both sides - and left in libraries, community centers, game stores and the like. I brainstormed that idea for a while. Bought legal sized paper for my printer, as I thought I might need the extra space of a larger sheet of paper. I had lots of ideas, and that was good. I found something to do in retirement.

Sometime in the late spring, I shared my idea with Zach Glazar (Frog God Games). We are friends and often use the other as a sounding board. Ideas that may sound good to oneself may not survive the intense gaze of another's more critical - and less biased - thinking.

I expected some ideas for layout, general feedback on rules to include or exclude. I hadn't even settled on a ruleset to strip down. I half expected to build one from the ground up of my own, using the various existing rulesets for inspiration. Instead, Zach told me my vision was lacking. I had a great idea - an awesome idea - but I was thinking too small. He then told me to hold that thought and he would get back to me.

Before I knew it, instead of some throwaway sheet of paper that would probably never fit enough rules to be playable (or if it did, the font would be too small to be readable), what if I had four pages, professionally laid out with high-quality art, using the Swords & Wizardry rules and stripping them down to the bare bones (and even whittled away at some of those bones) and Frog God Games would publish - both in print (to give away for free) and in PDF. Oh, and it would be called Swords & Wizardry Light.

Without Zach, without Frog God Games, there would be no Swords & Wizardry Light. There might be some hacked out ruleset, barely playable but certainly loved by its creator, hoping to be found in some random libraries, but its impact would have been minimal.

Swords & Wizardry Light was never the work of one person. It was a team effort from the moment we named it. Zach doing layout and feedback, Scott Swift on editing, James Spahn on smoothing out the rules and all of us trying to save space, one character (note: not "player character") at a time. All while thanking Matt Finch and Bill Webb for even allowing us to do what we did to the house ruleset of Frog God Games.

As a ruleset, Swords & Wizardry Light was intended to lower the entry bar to old school style roleplaying and RPGs in general. To feel comfortable and familiar to lapsed gamers and non-intimidating to new players, young and old. Oh, and since it is built on the bones of Swords & Wizardry, its a perfect marketing tool for Swords & Wizardry Complete. It is meant to complement the larger ruleset, not compete with it. It only covers three levels, and that is by design (and space consideration)

The rest pretty much is history. It debuted at GameHole Con in 2016 and has been given away at cons, via snail mail, with Frog God orders, PDF and more - thousands upon thousands of times. It's a perfect ruleset to run at conventions and works well for pick up games. It gives just enough of the fuller rules to bring folks back to the Frog God booth at conventions asking for more Swords & Wizardry. More OSR.

I do believe it accomplishes the goals we set out for it and more.

So, there you have it. The true story of the origins of Swords & Wizardry Light. Less exciting then some narratives and dramaless, unless you include the period where I was trying to emulate a d20 with 3d6...

When I'm Asked "Why Swords & Wizardry Light?" THIS Will Be My Answer

I've been asked "Why Swords & Wizardry Light?" more than once. I've been told it wasn't needed, dumbs down the game and basically has assailed the senses of a handful of Grognards.

I wrote the four pages in question to help ease lapsed gamers back into the hobby, introduce other gamers to the OSR, bring new players into tabletop roleplaying, but even more importantly as a lowered entry bar to RPGs that kids would not feel intimidated by.

My niece was just a month short of her sixth birthday when I showed her an early copy of the Swords & Wizardry Light rules. Her response? "Uncle, did you write this for me? Its only four pages. You can teach me to read four pages and then I can play D&D!"

The above picture was shared by Carl Heyl (podcaster at Save or Die, an active member of the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server and apparently a skilled ambassador to younger gamers.)

To quote Carl: "How's this for cool Erik Tenkar? Gave a kid a copy of Swords & Wizardry Light last week at our gaming group and this week he came on with his own mapped out dungeons."

This. This is why Swords & Wizardry Light exists. Sure, it's a great ruleset to run at conventions. That's a bonus. The kids, that's where it's at. They are the future, both in our gaming and in life beyond.

I'm stoked and all smiley. Can you tell? heh

I've Gotten a Peek at the Far Away Land / Swords & Wizardry Mashup Playtest Rules and I'm Psyched!

Dirk Stanley sent me the latest version of the playtest rules where he converts his Far Away Lands setting from his own rule system (which is awesome in its own right) to a modified Swords & Wizardry engine, drawing some inspiration from Swords & Wizardry Continual Light.

I can not state enough how much I want to run this. Like right now! heh.

I was thinking of giving World Anvil a shot at managing my next campaign, and I was going to use The Black Isle as the setting using SWCL as the ruleset, but Dirk has severely tempted me.

As Dirk gets closer to release, I'll snag him for an interview on The Tavern Chat Podcast.

You can grab the Far Away Land Quickstart rules as PWYW to get a feel for the setting and the art here:  https://www.rpgnow.com/product/149427/Far-Away-Land-RPG-Quick-Start-Rules?affiliate_id=1446

You can download adventures for the current ruleset here as well as other the releases. The individual adventures are PWYW.  https://www.rpgnow.com/browse/pub/2832/Simian-Circle-Games?affiliate_id=1446

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Week Long Wrap Up - Saturday, October 20th. 2018

We are trying something a little different. Instead of daily links to the Tavern Chat Podcast, we are going to go with a weekly wrap up post. So, we'll count back from this morning's release through Wednesday's release (because Tuesday and earlier were still getting daily posts)

E157 - The Complete, Untold Story Behind the Origins of Swords & Wizardry Light
Man, the amount of tinfoil hats in our corner of the hobby is simply amazing at times. No, Swords & Wizardry Light was not written to usurp legitimacy and authority from Swords & Wizardry Complete. How could it? They are both published by the same company and SWL is presented as an intro to SWC. No, Swords & Wizardry Light was not written to "dumb down" the OSR and lead to its destruction from within. It was written to lower the barriers of entry to the OSR. Gather around children and your bartender will tell you the true story of the Origins of the Swords & Wizardry Light Ruleset...

e156 - The Pinky Interview - My Seven-Year-Old Niece Talks Dungeons, Dragons and Imagination
Shannon has been asking Uncle to interview her on the podcast pretty much since i kicked off the podcast. Today was another day of Uncle duties, as Shannon has an ear infection to go along with her chest cold. We decided to do the "interview" today. She had so much fun, she wants to do it monthly ;)

E155 - Confessions of an RPG Hoarder
My niece has gotten me to go hot-n-heavy when it comes to cleaning out the living room. In doing such, I've unearthed a large amount of partially forgotten RPG material I've acquired as well as identified a significant amount of duplicates. Do you have RPG hoarding tendencies? How do you cope with such if you do?
