New Release - Labyrinth Lord: Revised & Expanded (LL 2e)

The new edition of Labyrinth Lord was released last week. Whether you refer to it as its official title, Labyrinth Lord: Revised & Expanded, or more commonly, Labyrinth Lord 2e, it is different from its more classic (and nearly 20-year-old) predecessor.

It should be noted that there is a bit of a price war going on in the OSR right now.

Labyrinth Lord: Revised & Expanded - $10

Dragonslayer - $9.99

Labyrinth Lord: Revised Edition - $8 (classic rules)

Labyrinth Lord: Advanced Edition Characters - $6.99 (Likely Black Friday Pricing)

It's a great time to explore the OSR :)

Back to the Basics of Fantasy Gaming

Enter a world filled with labyrinths, magic, and monsters!

You take the role of a burglar, cleric, cyclops, brownie, dwarf, elf, fighter, hobfolk, or wizard, on your quest for glory, treasure, and adventure!

This is a complete roleplaying game. All you need are a few sheets of paper and some dice.

The Labyrinth Lord awaits your arrival. Can you survive the dangers of the labyrinth?

Revised & Expanded!

DragonSlayer RPG - New Price - $9.99

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the DragonSlayer RPG PDF has been marked down from $30 to $9.99 in PDF. That is awesome! DragonSlayer is a great game, but I found it difficult to recommend the PDF to people at the old $30 price point. At 9.99? All day, every day.

Now, the DragonSlayer PDF is a penny cheaper than the newly released Labyrinth Lord 2e PDF ($10). Looks like I'll need to grab the LL2e PDF and do a straight-up comparison video.

Did I mention there's a Black Friday Sale at DTRPG?

Step into the Golden Age of Role-Playing Games with Dragonslayer, an OSR (Old-School Renaissance) game system that brings the classic magic, adventure, and wonder of 1980s tabletop RPGs to life! Free OSR - Winds of the Ice Forest (LL Adventure)

I prefer low-level adventuring (and lower-level campaign play overall). Once you get to high-level play, off-the-shelf adventures often fail to be an appropriate challenge for your group of players (too easy or too difficult), and things can get a bit swingy. Low-level play is where it is at IMHO.

Winds of the Ice Forest is a low-level (levels 1 to 3) adventure for Labyrinth Lord. The fact that it is a J.V. West-written (and drawn) adventure has me downloading as I type! ;)

The dreaded Ice Forest! Once a safe passage to the north, now the forest's evil magic seeks to trap and confuse travelers with ever-shifting paths full of terrible dangers. New monsters, new magic items, new magics!

This adventure for character levels 1-3 was designed for Labyrinth Lord but can be used with any old school dungeon-crawling RPG. It is a drop-in locale that can be played through in a few hours or in a much longer session...per the needs of your gaming group.

LABYRINTH LORD second edition COMING Q1 2023

Times have changed, and so is Labyrinth Lord!

First released in 2007, Labyrinth Lord is the premier Basic/Expert compatible fantasy role-playing game. Back then "retro–clones" were a new concept, exemplified by Matt Finch's and Stewart Marshall's work on the first edition compatible game OSRIC.

We were treading new waters in pushing the limits of the Open Game License and available System Reference Documents from Wizards of the Coast. The rule of thumb at that time was to err on the side of caution to avoid publishing content that might be considered "art" rather than system.

Fast forward 15 years later, and the slew of additional games following the same path but in a less cautious manner has proven that some of the design choices made earlier are not necessary in the current state of the industry.

Coupled with being essentially out of the game publishing market for several years, it's clear that the time has come for Goblinoid Games to publish a new edition of the ever popular Labyrinth Lord game!

Labyrinth Lord, Second Edition

Game presentation will be updated to account for the new standards gamers expect. Things like experience tables, level rank titles, and other smaller changes originally made to avoid the perception of reproducing art, will all be brought to closer compatibility with the original Basic/Expert rules.

In addition, much of the rules presentation will be streamlined for easier reference at the table. This will be done while accounting for known errata.

What does the future hold?

Labyrinth Lord second edition is set for release in Q1 of 2023. Its release will be concurrent with a new solo adventure (the writing stage is currently almost finished). These products will be released directly to the public, not via any fundraising effort ahead of time.

Later, there will be a second edition of the Advanced Edition Companion, and if the public desires it, these books will be compiled to create a second edition of Advanced Labyrinth Lord. All editions will remain in print, but clearly labeled with our vendors as to which books are first or second edition.

Goblinoid Games will continue to publish additional adventures and other works regularly going forward.

I'm excited for this relaunch, and I hope many of you join me on this new adventure. Let's make the next 15 years of Labyrinth Lord even more groundbreaking than its early years.

Deal of the Day - Advanced Labyrinth Lord (Dragon Cover)

Labrinth Lord was my initial introduction to the "real" OSR. Those art-free PDFs were eye-opening as to what one could find in the modern market that emulated the RPGs I cut my teeth on.

For years Labyrinth Lord was the OSR system of choice, not just the original rules but the Advanced Labyrinth Lord rules, which did an effective job emulating the AD&D rules while using the B/X / LL chassis.

Today's Deal of the Day, which is on sale until tomorrow morning, Jan 30th, 2022 is Advanced Labyrinth Lord (Dragon Cover) in PDF. Normally 14.99, it is currently on sale for 8.99.

Labyrinth Lord doesn't waste precious game time.

We're older now. It's hard enough setting aside time to game.

Then you have to wrangle all your players together at the same time.

The last thing you want is your hard-fought game time wasted.

Combats in Labyrinth Lord are resolved quickly. Running adventures isn't bogged down with bloated monster stats and overcomplicated combats.

Get right into the fun stuff, squeezing the most adventure out of your time.

Play the game on your own terms. Most of us started out with the basic game, working in advanced elements without even realizing basic and advanced were supposed to be two different games. We all might have created our own Frankenstein's monster of rules in slightly different ways, but Labyrinth Lord lets you play the game the way you want it.

If you want to keep basic classes, you can, and play them right along with the advanced classes. Or just use the advanced options. Pick and choose what you want to place in your game on your own terms.

Play the game like you remember it. Feel the adventure like you remember it.

That's why I want to share Labyrinth Lord with you.

COMPLETE AT LAST!

Basic and Advanced

Finally the basic and advanced game rules are in one volume!

This book combines the material originally presented in the Labyrinth Lord core rules and in the Advanced Edition Companion. Play advanced and basic characters in the same group, or choose to play one or the other.

Enter a world filled with labyrinths, magic, and monsters! Choose a basic race-class, advanced class, or even multiclass to combine the two! All of the basic and advanced options are within reach.

Labyrinth Lord is the Rosetta Stone of old-school fantasy rules.

It is easy to use basic and advanced game adventures from other publishers with these rules.

In this book you will find...

  • A complete guide to basic and advanced characters
  • All core basic and advanced monsters
  • Basic and advanced spells
  • The full repertoire of basic and advanced magic items
  • Optional rules to make your game even more advanced
  • Welcome back to old-school gameplay.

**Note that the PDF includes both the Dragon cover and Orcus Cover images.

Deal of The Day - Lordling: Fantasy Role-Playing Game for Kids (Goblinoid Games)

I'm a huge fan of youth accessible RPG gaming. My niece is now 9, she was 5 when Swords & Wizardry Light released. When she realized what I wrote she told me: "Uncle, you can use this to teach me to read, and then I can play D&D too!"

The fact that Lordling: Fantasy Role-Playing Game for Kids was written for kids is awesome. Normally 4.49 in PDF, until tomorrow morning Lordling is on sale for 2.69

Lordling is the baton to hand off fantasy role-playing to the next generation!

It is an introductory role-playing game for kids. Play all of the classic race classes from Labyrinth Lord, but with a new streamlined system perfect for young new players.

Lordling is meant to be used by a mentor to teach young kids how to play role-playing games. It is a self-contained game, but as the players become more experienced it will benefit from using Labyrinth Lord for additional material.

Finally! Your kids are ready to play. But can you handle their imaginations?

Lordling presents rules very similar to B/X, but uses 2d6 or 1d6 for resolution. The overall system is streamlined for kids, but with enough detail that it can also be used as a "beer & pretzels" RPG for adults or older kids.

New Release - Advanced Labyrinth Lord (Dragon Cover)

Labyrinth Lord was probably the first OSR ruleset that I stumbled across when I found the OSR. Well, first after Castles & Crusades, and certainly the first ruleset that had a free PDF available for it.

Now, I cut my teeth on AD&D, unlike much of my generation which was introduced to RPGs via the Basic set. Labyrinth Lord is a rewrite of Basic/Expert, so the aping of the original B/X fonts doesn't quite make me nostalgic, but I do appreciate the thought.

Advanced Labyrinth Lord takes the core LL book and seamlessly combines it with the Advanced Edition Companion into one book.

I'm not sure which cover I want for my print copy :)

New Release - FP1: Arrival at Fort Perilous (Labyrinth Lord Levels 1 to 3)

I was contacted by the author (and artist) of FP1: Arrival at Fort Perilous and asked if I would take a look at it. I have and although it has some minor flaws (some inconsistencies in the layout - and I should know, as I am piss poor at doing layout) it looks to be well worth the asking price of 2.20

Here's the elevator pitch:
This is an old-school sandbox adventure for the basic version of the world's most popular fantasy RPG. Explore the wilderness and the three detailed dungeons around the human outpost of Fort Perilous.
On the border between wilderness and civilization, Fort Perilous stands, keeping watch and holding the forces of Chaos at bay. Your heroes find themselves in the fort, drawn into the battles between civilization and monsters, between Law and Chaos.
This module is primarily a sandbox setting – that is players and GMs are not required to stick to any particular storyline. It is loosely along the same lines as the classic B2: The Keep on the Borderlands where there is a base where adventurers can rest, heal and sell loot.
Beyond the fort there is an area of borderlands that contains a number of locations of interest to adventurers (see chapter 2). Four of these are detailed in subsequent chapters though others are only briefly mentioned and can be fleshed out by GMs if they so wish.

So, what do you get for the price of a slice of pizza?  Sandbox, a couple of dungeons, a safe (relatively) starting location for the PCs and some new cleric spells.

Do you have the quality of a Frog God module? No, but you don't have that price tag either. If you simply want bang for your adventuring buck, I don't think you can do much better than Arrival at Fort Perilous at $2.20 in PDF.

Sale - Barrel Rider Games (White Star / White Box / LL) - ALL PDF Releases 25% Off

You want more James Spahn for less? Well, THIS is your chance!

For the month of September, James Spahn / Barrel Rider Games has put each and every PDF they've released on sale at 25% off.

You want more White Star? More White Box? More Labyrinth Lord? And you want it for less? Now is your chance!

Seriously, some of the best OSR material available for any system is on sale at 25% off. I'd say even nicer things, but James is a good friend of mine, and I feel awkward making 6 foot tall Hobbits embarrassed by saying nice things...

Note: No Six foot plus tall Hobbits were harmed in the creation of this sale. More sales mean more new products down the line. PWYW is already priced at "tip jar" pricing. Remember, Hobbits gotta eat! ;P

Thanks to this post at the Multiverse blog: http://multiverse.world/blog/2018/07/02/what-is-the-osr-old-school-revival/ (well worth the reading( I've been inspired to do a series of podcast episodes covering various OSR ruleset. In the first episode of the series, I look at the beginning of the OSR.

Kickstarter - Advanced Labyrinth Lord

First, there was Labyrinth Lord. It was followed by the Advanced Edition Companion. Now, with the Advanced Labyrinth Lord Kickstarter, the two are now one.

Very cool and long overdue ;)

So, what are the facts?
For the first time, Labyrinth Lord and the Advanced Edition Companion will be seamlessly combined into one volume! Fans have been asking for this for several years, and it is my pleasure to make it happen! All of the basic and advanced options, magic items, and monsters will be brought together under one cover for easy reference.
Here are some facts about the combined book:
  • This is not a new game.
  • This is simply a combined book.
  • You will still be able to separate "basic" from "advanced" game options.
  • Much interior art will carry over from the original books, but new interior art will be featured in addition.
  • This combined book does not replace the current separate books. Those books will remain in print.
30 bucks gives you the PDF and a POD at cost coupon (you pay print cost and shipping)

New Release - Hell Hath No Furry - Fail Squad Games (BECMI / LL)

Fail Squad Games has launched its own online storefront and the latest release is Hell Hath No Furry for BECMI / LL. This 6 page, full-color PDF is priced at 3 bucks BUT if you sign up to be a Fail Squad Games Guild Member (its free to sign up and the information is on the same page as the adventure is) you get it at half off - $1.50. Not too shabby at all.

Lloyd does great work and I've backed every Kickstarter he's run (at levels that have included original art, because as skilled as he is at adventure writing he surpasses even that as an artist.)

Here's the write up from the page:
A BECMI / Labyrinth Lord adventure for 4-6 level 3 characters
(6 pages – full color)
Who let the dogs out? Some hellhounds have escaped their domain in the Lands of Lunacy (or a small island on the Elemental Plane of Fire). One of Brimfire’s (a fire giant) hounds discovered a jewel that opens a portal to the Prime Material Plane, and the hounds are wreaking havoc hunting and terrorizing the mortals.
Note - this adventure is a mini-hex crawl with an outdoor hex map (100 yards per hex) - as well as a dungeon crawl. Two great tastes, one candy bar. Er, wait... you know what I mean ;)

Kickstarter - Those Dam Goblins (LL & 5e)

If you've been following my Kickstarter posts, you would know that +Lloyd Metcalf / Fail Squad Games is always on time if not early AND backing Lloyd's KSs doesn't break the bank. They are old school friendly while still being a perfect fit for 5e. In other words, they are Win / Win and I expect more of the same from Those Dam Goblins.
Several years ago human settlers discovered a marsh covered valley which they knew would provide fertile crop land if only the marsh could be drained. The settlers dammed the river and may have damned themselves! The diverted river has awoken the cliffs themselves. Strange rumblings in the earth and smoke from the cliff tops are sure signs of trouble. The residents of Fertile Valley need some heroes, can you save Fertile Valley before it’s too late?
This adventure is written for the Labyrinth Lord (LL) game system compatible with BECMI or B/X with Fifth Edition rules of the world’s most popular tabletop RPG included.
Written by Chris Clark with additional work and art by Lloyd himself, Those Dam Goblin's is the latest release from Fail Squad Games.

Buy in is 7 bucks in PDF, 15 in Print at 23 in Print / PDF. (The print plus PDF includes Crypt on Keeper Hill - a 5e Interlude)

OSR Extravaganza Sale - The Picks - Mutant Apes & Spacemen in Spaceship Labyrinths!

The OSR Extravaganza Sale is in full swing. Its time for The Tavern to make some picks and the occasional "deep track" ;)

Starships & Spacemen 2e - Labyrinth Lord in Spaaaaccceeeeee! I'd love to play in a White Star / Starships & Spaceman mashup ;) - "Boldly explore the galaxy in search of alien civilizations! You take the role of a Military Officer, Technical Officer, Science Officer, or Enlisted Man in the Galactic Confederation. Travel in a starship under your command, on missions of first contact, rescue, exploration, and more in a galaxy full of hostile aliens. Try to maintain the tenuous truce with the militaristic Zangid, and fight the Videni who may look like your Tauran allies, but do not adhere to a philosophy of peace and logic.

Design alien humanoids with either "original series" or "next generation" sensibilites, or blend the two approaches! There are 100 forehead shapes that may be randomly rolled when a new alien race is encountered.

This book contains: Eight player races, Three main classes, with several subclasses, Rules for spaceships and exploration, many alien creatures and more..."  $6.45  $5.48

Mutant Future - Labyrinth Lord meets Gamma World. Oh my! - "The sinister and sadistic bleating of spidergoats echoes in the night, a complementary chorus to the rustling of an unfortunate victim caught in their webs. In deep, dank caves to the north, corrupted humans take communion with an unspeakably evil abomination they worship as a god. Shrill cries from the fields can only mean the vomit flies are back, molesting your livestock. In short, just another day in the Mutant Future!

Mutant Future is a post-apocalyptic science fantasy RPG, in the same flavor of similar genre games from the late 70s and early 80s. The game is almost entirely open game content, and a free trademark license allows anyone to publish materials compatible with Mutant Future.

Enter a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland filled with mutants, ruins, and radiation! You can take the role of an android, mutant human, mutant animal, pure human, and even a mutant plant! Seek wealth and ancient technological artifacts. Enter vast underground complexes, and avoid killer robots!"
$6.95  $5.91

Apes Victorious - Labyrinth Lord meets... you guessed it... Planet of the Apes - Apes Victorious is a roleplaying game in which you take the role of an astronaut from the 1970’s who finds himself marooned on a future Earth ruled by intelligent apes. Players may also take the role of an ape, a degenerated human, or a psi-active under dweller. Fight to survive in this post-apocalyptic future ruled by four species of apes. Or play apes who hunt humans for sport. For a different kind of campaign, play highly intelligent but insane under dwellers who have advanced technology and powerful psi powers.

This book contains:
-A complete game
-A post-nuclear apocalyptic setting in which apes have become the dominant species
-Seven player classes
-Animals and creatures of the post-nuclear future
-Campaign advice
-A complete introductory adventure
-Conversion notes for compatible games including: Labyrinth Lord, Mutant Future, Starships & Spacemen

Grab them all and play the genre mashup - Mutant Apes & Spacemen in Spaceship Labyrinths!

Remember, the art free version of Labyrinth Lord is free.
