Did You Get Your Gift of Choice for the Holidays, Gaming or Otherwise?

My wife did awesome by me, and ordered me the Cooper's DIY Beer Brewing Kit Bundle (linked). I haven't home brewed since we were courting a few years back and I used to supply home brewed Cooper's Sparkling Ale on our "stay home" date nights. Nothing says "I love you" like home brewed beer. Now I have all new supplies (and enough supplies on hand to brew 4 different 5 gallon batches of beer. Woot! Beats that year my mom got me 8 different pairs of lounging around the house pants that were all 4" to long...

So, did you get what you REALLY wanted for Christmas? Not the shirts, ties, soap, etc. - something you were really jonesing for.

Tell us. I will pick the person that got most screwed out of what they want (or tells the most amusing story) to receive either a $20 RPGNow Credit or a $20 Amazon Gift Card (via email). Totally subjective on my part ;)

I can't give a gift to all my readers, but you might be the one that gets the gift.

    I did get the gaming gift I wanted, so I won't be in the running. First printing mono Tomb of Horrors.

    Sadly, no. I'm still missing one title for my WH40k RPG core rules set... and it's not the most recent one at that. Black Crusade is still not on my shelf. :(

      The full story is that I was prepping my girflriend's birthday stuff in September, and made a list for both of our birthdays and christmasses. Hers was full of what she wanted, and a list of who she wanted to have at her party.

      Mine had two words on it: Black Crusade.

      Her birthday went off without a hitch. It was great - lots of friends there as per her requests, the food she wanted, and the presents she had asked for.

      Then my birthday came around. My list still only has one item on it. Two words.

      Black Crusade.

      My birthday is nice. Smooth... but no Black Crusade.

      Then Christmas is on the horizon. I update her list with a bunch of new stuff. I highlight and underline the two words on my list that will make it around to her family and mine.

      Black Crusade.

      I have new socks.

      Shipping to Canada increased the cost of the game to above cover price here in Canada, so that wasn't a realistic option.

    All I got was a text message from a friend I haven't seen in quite awhile. The only problem was she was meaning to send it to someone else. Fortunately for her it wasn't especially revealing. When I let her know her error she sent me another one on purpose that said, "Merry Christmas".

    Cool but this year will be one to forget and 5 gallons a beer ought to do that nicely. Thanks for the idea!

    Well, traditionally I get the usual austere gifts (clothes, maybe a bottle of wine if I'm lucky) but this year my mother in law shocked me by not only getting me a nice watch to go with my promotion to senior exec but also a stack of old comics she discovered...it was apparently her way of admitting that my being into comics and gaming wasn't hampering my ability to succeed in business. So it wasn't anything I asked for, but it was far and away the nicest gift I'd received. As for my wife...she and I are both into the same stuff so it's pretty easy (she got me a PS4 controller and remote charger, I got her a stack of Deadpool graphic novels).

    I got some great stuff, moccasin slipper-boots, a flatbed scanner for my new year's resolution of mapping more, and the GM kit for Edge of the Empire. Except I don't have the funky EotE dice or the core rules. Oops! But I already got a great gift from our favorite tavern keeper on the 10th day of OSR-mas. So I guess I'm still coming out ahead.

    I got all stuff I really liked, but I was secretly hoping someone would get my GTA V for my Xbox 360. Sadly, they didn't. Still, I got lots of stuff I didn't know I wanted until I got it. :)

    Closest gaming related gift I got was some Khador Faction Dice for Warmachine.. I did get my favorite DMs the Paizo Initiative Tracker.. I've seen it in action and I really liked it..

    I didn't get any gaming swag, but I did get The Pirates of Dark Water on DVD. That and a lot of cash, which I now will blow in a binge of miniatures and games. My relatives know better than to try to get me things I want, since my needs are somewhat rarified.

    As other gamers with long-suffering families can attest, the holidays are always a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to receiving gifts. It's strange that people think I'm hard to buy for. I'm immersed in a really specific hobby that includes all kinds of peripheral stuff to buy. All too often, people just ignore items on my wish lists as if I'm just messing with them or something.

    Years ago, my mother-in-law got me a cheap set of dominos, because you know, I'm into games. I smiled outwardly while trying to remember if I even knew how to play the game. A few weeks later, in a moment of desperation, I reached for the dominos to build some quick dungeon walls for a 3E game I was running. I've used that darned set of dominos in face-to-face games ever since.
    As for this year, my wife and I decided to save the budget and not get each other gifts. She broke down and bought me something anyway (bless her heart): the Pathfinder Adventure Game. Not anything I would have purchased for myself, but any game that I can play with the kids is a good gift, so no complaints here. Not to get sentimental, but I'm in South Korea and I spent my first year here without the wife and kids. I'm not lying when I say that having my family with me is really the best thing I could ever have for Christmas.

    I got the Lamentations of the Flame Princess hardcover Rules & Magic using Christmas money from my parents. First time I've bought an RPG hardcover at full price in years - and it was totally worth it.

    My wife also bought me two history books that I'll be using for doing up an adventure for LotFP: "The Pursuit of the Millenium" and "The Library: A World History". Mwaha. Mwahaha. Mwahahahahahahaaaa!!!!

    My gaming gift came in November for my birthday, so I can't complain: Dungeon World in print. My main pleasure this Christmas was seeing everyone else enjoy their gifts, particularly my kids. Unfortunately, I didn't last long before I lost my last hit point to some kind of gichy feeling, complete with fever, chills, hallucinations, and stomach flu symptoms. I was in bed most of the day.

    The only games-related thing that came to me was the "Voyages" set of Rory's Story Cubes, which I'm looking forward to rolling with my toddler. I have the basic set, and he makes up the wildest stories with them.

    All in all, it hasn't been a bad Christmas, I just wasn't able to enjoy it at full capacity.

    Well Santa Dwarf was on his way to my cabin deep in the woods when he was surrounded by a random encounter of goblins. The reindeer spooked and left Santa Dwarf there alone. So the goblins rolled a 20 and captured him.
    So, no gaming gifts for me this year. Will just have to figure out how to incorporate my daughter's two new American Girl dolls into our campaign. Should they be "real" characters or NPC's we find at the tavern??...stay tuned!

    This year I was very fortunate, and got pretty much everything I;d wanted: Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea Boxed Set, Munchkin Deluxe, Munchkin Legends, Planet of the Apes Complete TV Series DVD, and the Dredd DVD.

    I've learned over the past few years, as we fell from "genteel poverty" to something else (yet thankfully not "grinding poverty"), to be merely thankful for having a nice place to live, good and plentiful food, and the opportunity to see that yes, maybe things can still get better. While being stuck in a rut, financially and career-wise, is certainly no fun, it is far better than falling further down those rungs. Definitely something to be grateful for, along with the companionship of family and friends.

    I'm easy to holiday shop for: I tell everyone to buy for my wife or our twin sons. I tend to hunt up deals for the things I want through out the year. My mom bucked this tradition and got me some silicon clay shaper for use my green stuff.

    I got my desired gaming gift but only because I bought it myself -- a copy of _Astounding Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea_ boxed set. I love it. Does that mean I'm in the running?

      Other than the fellowship of family and friends, I received only two gifts other than cash from my dad or cookies -- an 8x10 of a fox photo my brother took, and a pair of warm socks. But Xmas and Yule (we celebrate both, as pagans in a Christian family) are all about the kids.

    When I was about 13 years old (1987), my greatest joy was my NES. I had a paper route almost exclusively to earn money to buy games. Christmas was the rare occasion where my parents would actually buy me a game. I has been saving up my Christmas request for one of the greatest games of all time. Castlevania. It was scary, had great action and some of the best boss battles of the era. I made it very clear to my mother by only ever asking for one thing. I didn't even mention any other toys for fear of missing that game.

    I came running down the stairs Christmas morning to find a wrapped gift exactly the size of the cardboard NES game boxes. I was thrilled. I feverishly ripped the wrapping paper open as my proud faced mother looked on. I removed the paper and saw the cover.....what? WTF is this I thought? I read the title.

    Castle.....QUEST

    I asked for Castlevania, one of the most epic 2D platformers of all time and I got Castlequest, one of the most tedious and punishing games ever made. I was devastated and my poor mother had no idea she had screwed up. I proceed to conceal my disappointment. And of course my mom said she wanted to see what all the fuss of this game was about. She then sat and watched me play for a good half hour as I died repeatedly. She walked away shaking her head, utterly confused why I would wants such a rudimentary and frustrating game. To this day, I've never told her. I still have the game and the map that shows you the exact route to take and yet I've never beat it. The game was brutal. I also never ended up owning Castlevania, not sure why not. I think the Castlequest scenario was just too painful. Or, perhaps Zelda II came out and I totally forgot about it. :)

    My family would not have a clue about getting games for me for Christmas. I got cash, gift cards, and cookies. I ordered a holiday grab bag from both Frog God Games and Goodman Games before Christmas and both came on Monday so I opened them on Christmas Eve. That was the gaming gifts to myself.
