Some Thoughts on 0 - Level PCs in Swords & Wizardry

+Michael Garcia (aka TheCrazyGM) and myself were bouncing some thoughts back and forth earlier today about 0 - Level PCs in Swords & Wizardry via the DCC RPG. +Jon Marr of Purple Sorcerer Games sees synergy between the two systems, and I think that synergy is most evident at lower levels (or even "Zero Level" in this case).

This isn't totally new for me, as I had earlier improved a zero level funnel when I was running our ACKS campaign last year. There is something magical with the DCC RPG method of removing the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. Players really do get attached to their "funnel survivors", no matter how piss poor their stats might be.

So, Mike and I (well, mostly Mike probably) are going to see what we can come up with. Not sure if it will be ready for the kickoff of the Crypts & Things campaign on Sunday morning (which itself is a shift from the Swords & Wizardry session we started with a few weeks ago - except for some minor pieces, the systems are the same), but if it is ready in some playable form we'll give it a try.

DCC RPG will be the inspiration, but S&W has it's own sensibilities, so whatever we work out needs to fit solidly in the S&W side of things. Still, I may just use some of the 130+ entries to the earlier DCC 0 - Level Occupations contest that ran last year - they were all types of awesome!

Oh, and there would need to be a funnel. Funnels for the win!

  1. I was actually thinking of modifying my Basic Fantasy funnel for S&W Appreciation Day—good minds think alike. If you'd like an OGL-licensed base to work off, you can check mine out here (scroll to the bottom for downloads): http://www.infinitedragons.com/character-funnel/
