Hobbs & Friends Podcast Rereleases the Alexander Macris Interview Episode

On a personal note, I think this was one of the stronger interviews Jason did on the Hobbs & Friends Podcast. I'm glad to see Jason has released it again. The initial drama passed over a year ago and I think this is a good move and I applaud Jason. I'm quite sure he will get push back too, but such is the way of the world these days.

Here's the Hobb's & Friends Announcement:
Hello. After much soul searching I’ve decided it is time to re-release this episode. I’m certain this will cause some undue stress for some people and bring smiles to the faces of others. If it disappoints you, I’m sorry, but I think this deserves to be out there. I have not changed my stance on playing or purchasing ACKS. If I do, you’ll be the second to know.
If you enjoy this trip into Mr Hobbs’ Gamerhood give us some feedback on what you think! Since the change to the new RSS we could use some review and subscriptions. Please spread the word again and let other folks know there are new episodes and where they can find them.
Even if you decide not to listen to this episode, you should give Hobbs & Friends a try. Overall, it's one of the best OSR Podcasts on the interwebs.

Spotify Buys Anchor - Seeks to Become Netflix of Audio

What interesting times we live in. Anchor, the home to many OSR and RPG podcasts due in large part to its ease of use, was just bought by Spotify.

Spotify CEO lays out his plan to become the Netflix of audio as the stock drops on earnings

Spotify made a major step in building up its original content on Wednesday, announcing plans to acquire privately held podcast producers Gimlet Media and Anchor. The move is just the next step in Spotify's ambitions to become the Netflix of audio by accelerating its spending on original content.

The music streaming service said it plans to spend up to $500 million this year on more podcasting acquisitions. CEO Daniel Ek said in a CNBC interview with Jim Cramer and David Faber that while "the magnitude of the numbers won't be the same" as Netflix's massive spending on original content, "I don't think it's unlikely that it is a Netflix type of story," in terms of increasing investment in the area.

"It's really about expanding our mission from just being about music to being about all of audio and being the world's leading audio platform," Ek said on Squawk On the Street.

Terms of the deals with Gimlet and Anchor were not disclosed, but late last week, Recode and Vulture podcast critic Nicholas Quah reported Gimlet would sell for north of $200 million. According to Quah, those terms would make it the largest podcast industry acquisition to date.

...

Anchor brings a different part of the equation to Spotify with its easy-to-use podcast creation technology. Anchor serves as a platform for podcast creators to make and distribute their shows. Anchor had 15 billion hours of content on its platform in Q4, Ek said in the blog post.

Spotify wants to build a podcast empire, starts by buying Gimlet and Anchor

Spotify picked up podcast companies Gimlet and Anchor as it looks for new listeners, the streaming service said Wednesday.

"Our podcast users spend almost twice the time on the platform, and spend even more time listening to music," Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said in a statement. "We have also seen that by having unique programming, people who previously thought Spotify was not right for them will give it a try."

The announcement came as Spotify released its quarterly financial results,

Amid the cultural shift to streaming as the most common way people listen to music, Spotify and Apple Music have emerged as the leaders in the race to dominate subscription tunes. Though Spotify remains the biggest streaming service by both subscribers and those who listen for free, Apple Music has been growing quickly and its iTunes service remains the world's de facto place to find and download podcasts.

The Tavern Chat Podcast Surpasses 50k Downloads with its 201st Episode - Thank You All!

Holy shit! I'm floored. I am truly at a lack for words, which isn't exactly easy when one posts daily blogs and records a daily podcast.

The Tavern Chat Podcast surpassed 50,000 downloads tonight. I can't thank you all enough for sticking with me. 201 episodes in the mix already. Hopefully, I can keep the pace and the quality for the 201 episodes, and then the next 201 episodes, and then...

Here's the link to the cast: https://anchor.fm/tavernchat

Now, off to bed. Assuming I can fall asleep ;)

Tavern Chat Podcast Roundup for November, 2018

Yeah, I know there's still a day left in the month, but tomorrow is going to be busy as heck, so I figured I'd do the roundup post now. Well, not a complete roundup, but at least a highlight of the more popular episodes.

E170 - Episode #1 of the TavernSpike Podcast - Join "SpikePit" and Myself on a Podcast Crossover

Published on Nov 2, 2018

It has finally happened. There has been a melding of worlds. A mashing of podcasts. Yep, this is the first in a series of "podcast crossovers". Today, I hang with Colin "SpikePit" Green. We touch on many topics related to gaming, geekdom and beyond. Enjoy the podcast that spans both sides of the "pond" ;)

E173 - But we Decide which is Right and which is an Illusion - I talk briefly about Game Balance

Published on Nov 5, 2018

Love me some Moody Blues. I talk a bit about game balance and why I think the true balance belongs not in the rules but in the adventures.

E177 - GameHole Day Two with Bad Mike, Ben Barsh, Zach Glazer and Rach

Published on Nov 9, 2018

I hang out and discuss Gamehole and related stuff with Bad Mike, Ben Barsh, Zach Glazer and my wife Rach. Ambient noise supplied by Dwarven Forge ;)

E184 - Mundane Magic - Spells and Items - Why is This Overlooked in Most Fantasy RPGs?

Published on Nov 16, 2018

I got it into my head today to think about mundane magic. I understand why RPG rulebooks focus on the magic aimed for adventuring, but in societies where magic replaces technologoy, wouldnt there be more mundane uses?

E185 - Does the Graphic Define the OSR or Does the OSR Define the Graphic? Does the Graphic Matter?

Published on Nov 17, 2018

Voicemails on Mundane Magic kick us off. It really seems to have an audience. Then we address Stuart R's OSR Logo / Graphic and whether it was ever really needed. I think a TARGA follow up episode will be needed.

E186 - TARGA - Its History, Its Death and an Inside View - Are We Doomed to Repeat?

Published on Nov 18, 2018

I apologize in advance for the extra-long episode. As I was putting the pieces of the episode together, I discovered a post on our very own TenkarsTavern.com from 2014 that shed further light on the battle for the soul of TARGA, from the one that fought said battle. Additional material is at the end of the episode. It was too relevant to not include. I touch upon the current OSR logo drama too.

E192 - News - There is Now a Gygax Game site - But They Don't Mention FIG (Alex does have a sidegig)

Published on Nov 24, 2018

Voicemails and then a peek at the brand new Gygax Games website. What it doesn't say speaks volumes...

E196 - Do you Use Spells with No Save Against your Player Characters?

Published on Nov 28, 2018

JoeTheLawyer calls in with an interesting observation regarding spells with no saves (Cloudkill, Powerword Kill, Sleep, etc). I respond with thoughts of my own.

Episode #1 of the TavernSpike Podcast - Join "SpikePit" and Myself on a Podcast Crossover (Tavern Chat Episode #170)

This morning Colin and I recorded the first episode of the TavernSpike Podcast. It's also Episode 170 of Tavern Chat as well as the latest Episode of the SpikePit Podcast.

I think it's an excellent way to get listeners exposed to other podcasts and its something I encourage other podcasts to do. Sometime after I get back from GameHole (leave in 5 days for Madison) I'll be doing something similar with the fine folks over at the Save for Half Podcast (tentatively called "Save The Tavern") I strongly suspect this is going to be an ongoing thing and I am very excited that others are joining in.

Colin and I recorded Episode #1 of TavernSpike in front of a live studio audience. Well, not exactly, but we did have live listeners as we recorded this morning over at the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server.

Here's the link and we hope you enjoy the show:

Shane discovered the OSR back in 2013, since then he has written furiously on the subject. Included are ramblings, random tables, monster ideas, reviews and interviews with other OSR authors!

https://anchor.fm/steve-c3 - Steve Cook talks about OSR gaming stuff, does '2 Minute Reviews' (yeah right!) and gives 'OSR Metal Shoutouts.' \m/

https://anchor.fm/playing-it-wrong - Welcome to Playing It Wrong, the They Might Be Gazebos podcast. about D&D, RPG's and the people who play. Remember: Roll dice. Kill Monsters. Take their stuff. And HAVE FUN!

https://anchor.fm/tavernchat - A daily chat with your Old School Gaming Bartender

https://anchor.fm/gothridgemanor - Welcome to my Anchor channel. You'll find nothing serious here. I talk about tabletop RPG gaming with a focus on the older editions and retro clones. Some folks call it the OSR, I just call it gaming. If you like rolling weird dice, talking in weird voices and just being weird, pull up a chair and stay a while.

Tavern Chat Podcast - Putting the Idea to the The Tavern's Community

I like what Tim Shirt's did with the Gothridge Manor Podcast. I've also been seriously looking at doing some Youtube videos. Like, to the point of researching editing software.

Then I started looking at the podcast host that Tim was using - Anchor.fm. It more than a host, it's a full podcasting suite. Works well with phones using the Anchor app and makes bringing in others to the podcast a breeze.

I think I'm sold ;)

The question becomes, what kind of podcast does The Tavern's Community want from a podcast coming from your OSR Bartender?

- Short (5 to 15 minutes per episode) 4 to 7 times a week

- Longer (30 to 60 minutes per episode) 4 to 8 times a month

- A combination of the above - short episodes for news and gaming thoughts and blog recaps, longer episodes with guests

I'm thinking I'd talk about recent posts at The Tavern, interesting posts from other gaming blogs and forums, gaming news (not all of which is appropriate for the blog but the podcast could direct you on where to find current newsworthy stories not covered at The Tavern) and other assorted sundries.

Me, I'm leaning towards a combination of long and short episodes myself.

Give me your thoughts in the comments below and vote in the survey in the upper right corner of this page.

With Permission, I'm Stealing Lists & Links from Old School Gamer Radio - First Up, Podcasts

With +Matt Finch encouraging me to yoke the amazingly complete lists of podcasts, blogs, social media groups and vidcasts from the Old School Gamer Radio website and mirror them here I'd be a fool not to do so.

First up is podcasts. I've manually updated the links on the left side of this page and will be adding a permanent page where comments and suggestions for additions can be made.

We're trying to get the best bang for the buck and increase the visibility of all of these resources, and this is literally the first step of many that we've talked about.

Here's the list from Old School Gamer Radio:

Should there be show notes? Definitely. Are there? Not yet.

What do we talk about? Listen and find out. You never know. Maybe we talked about you ;)

I'm just a screenshot to allow visual imaging on social media ;)

Podcast - Hobbs & Friends of the OSR #12 - Hex Talk

As I've said many a time in the past year or so, my podcast listening has suffered with my lack of daily commuting. I'm not saying I wish I were commuting again, but I do need to set aside more time to listen to podcasts.

One of the better podcasts out there, especially if you dig the OSR is Hobbs & Friends of the OSR. Relatively knew to the podcast scene, +Jason Hobbs has hit the ground running. I've really enjoyed the conversations he's had with various guests (most of them return on a semi rotational basis)

Now, Hobbs & Friends #12 is not the latest episode (that would be episode #15 - Gaming with Kids) I was listening to the last when Jason mentioned a rant about the Three Castles Award (NTRPG), so I backtracked to episode #12. Its at the end of the episode (31 minute mark or so) and everything Jason said was spot on about this year's award ceremony (such as it was). The chariot racing trophies got more play and care than what is supposed to be THE industry award for the OSR. It made many of us cringe. It was the low water mark of a convention that set many high water marks this year - awesome new venue, new attendance high, an amazing selection of special guests.

There's much I could say, but Jason says it better than I ever could. Heck, one of his guests in episode #12 had a Three Castles Award nomination this year - not that you would have known. Sigh.

In any case, Jason has an eye on the OSR, warts and all as well as amazing discussions of game theory and gaming ideas. Give Hobbs & Friends of the OSR a solid listening to, you won't be sorry.

Save or Die - New Episode is Live - NTRPG Recap and Moving On

The latest and greatest episode of Save or Die is up for you to listen to+James Spahn , +Glen Hallstrom and myself talk about NTRPG Con 2017 from back in June. Yeah, it was a while between episodes. Life doesn't always cooperate as one might like.

I did make things a challenge for Glen as he had to clean up some of my F-Bombs in production. Sorry, Glenn, I'll try harder next time. I will say this. It was probably the most fun I've had recording a podcast. I kid you not. I think we were all hitting out marks and I hope it shows.

Its also the last episode of Save or Die with the three of us as hosts. He are moving on to other projects. If you want to keep in the know, keep an eye out here, at The Tavern and we'll keep you updated. Nothing is until it is and never say never.

I'd like to thank +Vincent Florio and Wild Games Productions for giving us the opportunity to keep y'all entertained and informed. Some of the greatest podcast fans in the world are loyal listeners to Save or Die, Roll for Initiative and THAC0's Hammer. Old School Gaming is where it is at.

Thanks to all of the listeners. You made every minute we spent recording worth it many times over. Hopefully we'll be able to pay you back in the future ;)

Podcast - Hobbs & Friends of the OSR

I had emergency uncle duties today (sick niece home from school) so I was finally able to catch up on some podcast listening. On the ride home I listened to the first episode of Hobbs & Friends of the OSR, and I must say - I was impressed.

It was a nice, relaxed conversation between Jason Hobbs +Jason Hobbs and +Eric Hoffman  and it felt like I was sitting at the local watering hole with them.

Much of the episode was spent talking about USR 2.0 (Unbelievably Simple Roleplaying), a game I've followed from a distance. Its intrigued me enough to decide to give it a look. Heck, its PWYW, so why not? ;)

Its also made me curious about The Treasure Vaults of Zadabad (S&W version - there is a DCC RPG version too) An island sandbox and more.

Hey, even I got a mention along with SWL, but more in the context of a recent discussion over whether or not less rules / text / etc is viable as well as useful. I think much of the viability depends on the goals of the product in question, but that's a whole 'nother discssion.

In any case, enjoyable episode. Now I need to catch up :)

Save or Die Makes the Geek & Sundry Top Five Expert Level RPG Podcasts

Geek and Sundry (link) put together a Top Five Expert Level RPG Podcast List and Save or Die made the list.
If you have a profound passion to learn and know all the tabletop RPG things, allow me to share with you some of the best audio podcasts I’ve found that I think would be a perfect fit for an official RPG101 course.
Now, mind you, I only heard of one of the four others on the list prior, and although I do listen to podcasts, there is only so much time during the day to listen (and less so since I no longer have a daily commute)

So, what do they say about Save or Die?
The Save or Die! Podcast (SoDcast) launched in 2010, with a focus on classic D&D games “from the first box set of 1974 to the last of the 1990s box sets.” SoDcast has also covered info on other RPGs, such as Swords & Wizardry, The Hero’s Journey, and Labyrinth Lord, to name a few. SoDcast is the podcast you’ll want to listen to if you’re interested in learning everything you can about the history of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG.
Critical Episode: Save or Die Podcast: Interview With Tracy Hickman
Some things to note:

- The Critical Episode was hosted by Vince and Crispy

- Classic D&D and the Hero's Journey was the Liz, Mike & Jim era

- Swords & Wizardry can only be my recent ramblings

Which means they took a long and complete look at the Save or Die Podcast, which makes making the Top 5 even that much more striking.

Congrats to all, but especially to Liz, Mike and Jim for holding the torch high for as long as they did.

Save or Die! Podcast - Resurrected!

The Save or Die! Podcast is continuing in a slightly new format with new hosts. Its new, official title is Save or Die! Expert Edition in homage to the Expert Boxed Set. The main man behind the wheel is none other than +James Spahn himself.

Now, if James reaches out and asks a favor of you, who among us would say "No!" Not I, as I owe James much over the past few years, so I readily agreed to join James in his newest endeavor. Along with James and I, +Vincent Florio and +Glen Hallstrom also agreed to be part of the newly assembled team. For me, it is almost a homecoming to my first podcasting experience, the Brainstorm Podcast.

Episode Adventure#131 is actually a Swords & Wizardry Light episode. By the way, I am TM Erik - Tavernmaster :)
After hovering on Death’s Door for a few rounds, Save or Die continues! Save or Die: Expert Edition bursts on to the scene with Swords & Wizardry Light – an ultralight folio sized incarnation of the flagship Frog God Games fantasy roleplaying game. Join DM James, DM Vince, TM Erik, and DM Glen as they keep it light, keep it fast, and keep it fun!
So, if you want some behind the scenes info (and some upcoming plans) of Swords & Wizardry Light, here's your chance.

Old School Blues Podcast - Episode #8 - How can you have any Black Pudding if you don't eat your meat!?!

Last night, Vince, Colin and myself reviewed Black Pudding #2 on the Old School Blues episode #8. How did it go? Well, I'm going to quote the great DM, Tim Connolly:
It was just like having you and Vince in my car with me whilst I was driving to Levittown and back again to Glem Cove afterwards.
I'm awarding it 6 tankards!
There you have it.

Listen to the podcast, but before you do, download your copy of Black Pudding #2 so you can follow along at home. Unless you're driving. It that case, read Black Pudding later ;)

New Old School Podcast in the Works and I'm Giddy as a Schoolgirl

There's a new ""Old School" podcast in the works.

I can confirm that I am involved in it, both as a host and in working out it's format.

I can not give its title (although it has a website reserved) - yet

I can not say who else might be involved in it - yet

I can say I am excited as all shit, because "Old School" is my wheelhouse and I really like the format we are talking about.

Soon, my precious. Soon.

NTRPG - Roll for Initiative Podcast - The Old School Interviews Episode

+Vincent Florio and I had a blast interviewing folks from the hobby last night at NTRPG Con for the Roll For Initiative Podcast . We scored some really great interviews.

Who did we interview you might ask?

+Richard LeBlanc
+Zach Glazar
Jeff Dee
The Frugal GM +Christopher Stogdill
Mike and Liz from Save or Die
Jim Wampler from Save or Die
DM Glen from Thaco’s Hammer
Jennell Jaquays

Give it a listen. It was a lot of fun and you can hear the Con energy in the background.

Photo courtesy of +Tim Snider , who we failed our roll to interview, but will have to track down at a later date. We understand there are apes in his future...

Path of Legends Podcast Episode #3 is Now Live for Your Listening Pleasure

What can I say about episode #3 of the Path of Legends Podcast? We (your hosts) were having a blast. It was a helluva lot of fun to record.

Of course, Danke the Dachshund makes an appearance. One day she'll be quiet ;)

Here's the details:

In this very episode, you will get the following:

In the Adventure Path we chat about Advantage/Disadvantage vs d6 method used by the D&D creator Gary Gygax as we explore both and decide which one would work out the best for your games in our eyes!

In Monster Hunters we talk about a staple creature in D&D games, the Orc, as we compare how much more deadlier the Orc has become since 1st Edition.

In What is old, Now is new, we chat about magical weapons from the old, something that seems to be missing from 5e.

In Presto's Hat we go over a web resource called The DM's Binder.
