New Release - Eldritch Tales: Lovecraftian White Box Role-Playing (S&W)

Wow. Simply wow. I just started looking through the Eldritch Tales: Lovecraftian White Box Role-Playing and it is a beauty. Art? Spectacular. The layout is clean and the table of contents are bookmarked.

System-wise, Eldritch Tales is built of the Swords &Wizardy White Box rules you already know with some twists. Attribute feats are checks against one of the ability scores. Basic difficulty gives a 50% chance of success on a d6. High ability scores make that a 4 in 6 chance. More difficult situations will adjust the chance of success downward. Class skills can give bonuses. Simple and effective.

There are four classes: the Antiquarian, the Combatant, the Opportunist, and the Socialite. It covers the range of what you need and the optional Occupations allow further specialization.

Wait. What about insanity? Wisdom is not a dump stat here.

Contacts are the game juice that players can use to move things along. They also add depth to the characters and the campaign. It's a great touch and could easily fit into an urban fantasy campaign setting.

I personally like the Random Occupations Table. I think it adds depth to the characters.

Alright, only six chapters in thus far. More later, likely a full review, once I digest this fully. But damn does it look good this far.
Aeons before man arose from the primordial mire, ancient creatures descended from the stars or stepped through dimensional passages to inhabit the Earth. Whilst many of these Old Ones have since passed into inactivity, the secrets they carried with them have been shared with man and now terrible cults haunt the fringes of modern society. These ancient terrors thus still menace mankind and, if the prophecies are to be believed, the Old Ones shall return to reign again over the Earth!
Eldritch Tales: Lovecraftian White Box Role-Playing in an OSR rule set with its roots in the Original version of the world's favorite RPG, but instead of exploring musty dungeons, characters in Eldritch Tales investigate Mythos horrors in the 1920s! The setting and background are based on the cosmic horror tales of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and other members of his writing circle.
Within the pages of Eldritch Tales you will find four character classes representing many classic pulp archetypes, occupations, rules for insanity, spells, monsters, esoteric tomes, artifacts, and setting material, as well as advice on using Eldritch Tales with other White Box games. This game is compatible with Swords & Wizardry White Box and other OSR games.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 101 - R Good & Evil Simply a Matter of Perspective?

Back in my college days, I wanted to experiment with a campaign where the Church of Saint Cuthbert was in schism and effectively at war with itself. It made me think about good and evil as a perspective.
Are good and evil simply matters of perspective? Different sides of the same coin? Does evil see itself as "evil?" Can a church in schism view the breakway as evil? Gaming thoughts with your old school bartender.

Wayward Kickstarter - Far West - Limping to Potential Completion

Let's look at Gareth's "recent" Far West timeline of notable events, shall we, and the "D6 Era" promises...

5/1/18 - Far West enters the D6 Era. New rules, new excuses.

5/24/18 - "For those of you who have contacted me about getting a look at the new rules doc, I expect to be sending that along next week." (3 months later)

6/4/18 - First cold of the summer. "As those of you who follow on Twitter know, I got my ass kicked last week by a summer cold (as far as I'm concerned, there should be a law against catching colds in the summer -- nothing more miserable)."

6/8/18 - Cold still kicking. Depression still kicking. But working through the weekend.

6/18/18 - Trifecta - "Held this one off until Monday — last week was a week of family obligations that kept me pretty busy.  My birthday was mid-week, Father’s Day was yesterday, and, unfortunately, earlier in the week we had to put our old lady cat to sleep."

6/29/18 - Now its the heat - "Heat indices of 115+ are no kinda fun, especially when you live in a house with no central air -- curse these 19th-century neighborhoods!  Ah, well -- I'll just take it as "sensory research" for writing about the Thousand Mesas region! Work continues, getting back onto schedule.  I am still expecting to be sending a finished manuscript to layout (and to you) in July."

7/10/19 - "Another quick one (as all of them will be in July, as I get this wrapped up) -- work continues". Of course, nothing about actual progress.

7/27/18 - Not going to be done when promised. Damn it, Gareth missed Gen Con because of US! "I'm working through this weekend, but it doesn't look like I'm going to hit my self-imposed deadline of July.  (I know, I know -- I've already beat myself up over this.)  It is what it is, and July has been challenging. Regardless:  I'm fairly sure that I only need a week to get things squared away -- but, to be on the safe side, I'm going to give myself two. The coming week, of course, is GenCon.  I will not be going.  For those of you who are, I hope you have a great time!"

7/28/18 - 8/28/18 Silence - and even silent on Twitter the past five days. Wow, he must be working now.

8/24/18 -Manuscript Chapters - Update

Just a quick note, visible to backers only.

As you might know, if you've checked Twitter, I've been offline for the past week, getting the manuscript together, finalizing edits and sending them as we sign off on them over to Eric for layout.

Anyway -- here are the first sections that have already gone into layout.  I'll be sending more out to you (and to Eric) over this weekend, and the rest of them will follow in the coming week.  Everything will be on Eric's desk by a week from today, because starting September 1st, I start working weekends, running my friend Ruth Thompson's art shop at the KC Renaissance Festival, and, honestly, I have no desire to be working 7-day weeks!  :)

So here's the first of them --

link removed

If I set this up correctly (my brain is a bit fried at the moment, so that's not a given), the link is logged and will require you to enter a password -- which is PASSWORD REMOVED.   Be sure to email me at gms@adamantentertainment.com if you have any trouble.

This is the front matter, the foreword, the introduction (which gives the overview of the D6PLUS system), and character creation.   As I said above, more is coming this weekend, as we sign off on them, with the rest coming within the week.

Back to it,

-Gareth

So, what do we get today?

If you are a backer, you will need to download the zip file folder. Trying to download individual files leave it hanging with nothing happening.

I need to give chapter 3 a solid read through, but I do appreciate this nugget from the foreward:
What followed the successful Kickstarter was the 7 hardest years of my life. I won't bore you with the story. Suffice to say that after interminable (and some might say infamous) delays, what you now hold in your hands is the culmination of a very long road. A road that I'm proud to have traveled.
I will be very surprised if we see a complete (and artless) version of the Far West rules before the end of September. Also, one should note there has been no recent discussion of the print release. Still, it is progress on a project that I, for one, no longer have an interest in playing the completed product.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 100 - Need I say More?

I'm not sure whether to curse or bless Hobbs, Tim, Matt and the others that got me into this "Anchor Podcasting" thing (whether they knew they were an influence at the time I do not know). Here I am posting up the 100th episode of that became a daily podcast right out of the box. Damn!
Woot! 100 episodes in 100 days. I never expected that when I kicked off this little podcast. We also hit some other milestones this week. September 22, 2018 is Shire Con. Guess who is a "notable industry guest"? Really. Guess ;)

Dice Roundup - I Went Shopping for Dice to Give Away at Shire Con (and bought more than intended)

Tonight I went looking for dice to give away Shire Con next month. I gave away a set for the best death at Gary Con this past March and I'm thinking about giving a set to each player at my Swords & Wizardry Light session. So a shopping I went at Amazon.

Below are some of my possibles that I looked at as well as the one dice I decided on. I left commentary with each. You may find you like something that I wasn't fully satisfied with. Then i found glow in the dark dice. Oh, and a metal set I simply must own. They will match my chainmail dice bag perfectly :)

Note, below are links to The Tavern's Amazon affiliate store. If you purchase from these links, a small portion of the monies you spend will go to support The Tavern. And beer. Mmmmmm.

Wilderlands - Rob Conley Announces the Release of the Fantastic Wilderlands Beyonde (Judges Guild)

I'm sharing this from Rob Conley's Bat in the Attic blog with his express permission. Linked products have affiliate links that support The Tavern. This was shared by Rob last night. Tenkar

I am pleased to announce the release of the Fantastic Wilderlands Beyonde. This is one of four products covering the eighteen maps that encompasses the Judges Guild Wilderlands setting. This product covers five of the maps as detailed below. The four sets combined will cover a region equal in size to Western Europe providing years and decades of adventuring for you and your group.

Unlike many setting products, the Wilderlands sketches out the overview and history in light detail. Then presents a comprehensive list of local detail in a compact format that is customizable. This eliminates much of the tedious work involved in creating a setting and allows the referee to focus on the campaign and the grand adventures the players face as their characters.

This is presented at two products both in PDF and Print on Demand.

This product is a 38 page Guidebook for the five maps of the Fantastic Wilderlands Beyonde. The books have an introduction and commentary by Robert S. Conley who has used the Wilderlands as his main fantasy campaign for nearly forty years. Each map is detailed with the following listings: Villages, Castles & Citadels, Idyllic Isles, Ruins & Relics, and Lurid Lairs.

Included with the Guidebook are letter sized blank map of the Wilderlands that can be used to take notes during a campaign. A PDF with the map legend. A letter size black and white guide to the placement of each of the 18 maps within the Wilderlands. This guidebook covers the City State of the World Emperor Map Six, Desert Lands Map Seven, Sea of Five Maps Map Eight, Elphand Lands Map Nine, and Lenap Map Ten.

Finally a giant-sized preliminary version of the master map that I used to crop the individual maps from. With the right printer, this can be printed as a full-scale map 5 feet wide and 8 feet long. With the PDF you can selectively copy out regions as complete maps that overlap the borders of the 18 maps. After the release of the final set of maps, this file will be updated as a layered PDF allowing for custom maps of the Wilderlands to be copied or created.

The second product is a set of five maps: City-State of the Invincible Overlord, Barbarian Altanis, Valley of the Ancients, Tarantis, and Valon. When ordered via print on the demand they are printed in two overlapping halves each on a 12" by 18" poster. In addition, each map is presented as a 22" by 17" PDF file.

The maps have been redrawn from the original in a color style. Instead of the distinct symbols of the original maps, the terrain has been drawn as a  transparent fill and vegetation represented by colored areas. This allows both terrain and vegetation to overlap. Representing more accurately the complexity and diversity of the Wilderland's geography.

RPGNow Deal of the Day - B/X Essentials: Classes and Equipment

The B/X Essentials line is just that - B/X D&D presented in a very clear and well written version. If this is your preferred flavor of the classic, B/X Essentials is for you.

Today's RPGNow Deal of the Day is B/X Essentials: Classes and Equipment. Normally $3.99 in PDF, for the next 14 hours or so (I know, I'm late ;) it is on sale for $1.49. At that price, it's a virtual no-brainer ;)
The B/X Essentials line is a restatement of the classic Basic/Expert fantasy adventure gaming rule set, given a fresh, new presentation focused on usability:
  • Basic and Expert rules seamlessly combined.
  • Streamlined presentation optimised for ease of reference during play.
  • Meticulously researched; a guaranteed 100% accurate rendition of the classic rules of yesteryear.
  • Carefully clarified, ironing out ambiguities in the original rules.
This second book lays out the standard classes of adventurer and the ways in which characters can spend their hard-earned treasure, including: arms, adventuring gear, mounts, sea vessels, mercenaries, specialists, and (eventually!) castles and strongholds.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 98 - Extended Interview with Darcy Perry -Miniatures

This interview was a bit of an experiment, as we recorded it in a room with live listeners on The Tavern's Discord server. While it runs far longer than most episodes of The Tavern Chat Podcast, I was loath to cut it into smaller pieces. So, the longest episode of The Tavern Chat Podcast by far. You've been warned ;)
In this episode, I have a (virtual) fireside chat with Darcy Perry of Star Hat Miniatures. Darcy is the sculptor of the official Tenkar miniature. The episode runs 57 minutes and was recorded in front of a live audience with questions and comments via text chat.

Kickstarter - Update - The Fantasy Trip – Pocket Box Stretch Goal

Earlier today Steve Jackson Games posted an update to The Fantasy Trip Kickstarter. Below I am sharing the update in full:
More Pages, Random Dungeon Generation, and the Melee/Wizard Pocket Box Stretch Goal
Posted by Philip Reed
$230,000 - We’ll make the font larger, AND make room for a bit more art, by increasing In the Labyrinth to 176 pages.
BGG - 400 Wizard Fans - We will print a random dungeon generation drop table on the inside lid of the Legacy Edition box.
And fantastic timing on unlocking those two goals as we go into the final days of the Kickstarter project! That $230,000 stretch goal falling was a trigger for our team, and we're now ready to reveal the $300,000 stretch goal: An eighties-style Pocket Box combining the Melee and Wizard games, using classic-sized maps and counters, and featuring new cover art by Liz Danforth!
Pocket Box mockup not final. NOTE: The plastic box will be inspired-by the eighties box, not identical to the eighties box.
If met, we will produce this combined Melee/Wizard Pocket Box game and pack it at no extra charge into the I Want It All reward level. And for those of you who need extras, if the Pocket Box is unlocked, we will also open it up as an add-on item.
We're in our final days of the project, so there's not much time left to unlock that $300,000 stretch goal. Please get out there into the wilds of the web and tell everyone about the return of The Fantasy Trip!
- Phil Reed
Well, The Fantasy Trip is currently at $235k. So, the first stretch goal is unlocked. The $300k stretch looks awesome. Screw it, backing at the $110 I Want it All reward level. Curses!

Live Interview Tonight - 830 PM Eastern - Darcy Perry - Star Hat Miniatures

So, we're doing something different tonight. I'm having a chat with / interviewing Darcy Perry of Star Hat Miniatures, the man that did the Tenkar Mini and currently has the Dungeons of Doom V: Law Vs Chaos Kickstarting running.

It was Darcy's idea to run the interview Live, so I have a voice chat room and associated text chat room ready to go on the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server.

We'll be using The Interview Room for the recording and if you want to listen (you won't be able to talk, or at least, that's how i THINK I set it up) just hangout out in the room. Also, drop into the interview-room-chat to comment/ask questions via chat. You can be in both at the same time.

I'll release the interview on The Tavern Chat Podcast this week.

Just about 2 hours to go.

The Tavern's Community is Awesome - Far Over $250 Raised for Josh Beckelheimer & Family

As my regular readers know, The Tavern pledged to match the first $250 raised for Josh Beckelheimer & Family for emergency car repairs. Skeeter Green Publishing also agree to do the same match.

Well, The Tavern's Community has done it and then some. The Tavern actually donated $350 thanks to an anonymous donor who sent a $100 donation to us to forward to Josh.

Josh and his family are not out of the woods yet but they are getting closer, because of you.

I sincerely thank everyone that has donated to Josh and his family.

This is a most amazing community.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 96 - Ken Whitman, Foiled (Machine) Again - Deja Vu

Ken Whitman - The hits just keep on coming. Much thanks to the Not Another Dime Blog for keeping the accurate and thorough accounting of Kenny.

P.S. - Kenny, September doesn't have 31 days...
The Tavern Chat Podcast hit over 20k downloads total last night. Can I get a Woot Woot!?! Ken Whitman "allegedly" has a foil machine to make pencils. Of course, earlier in the year he claimed to have two such machines. Also, tonight (Monday, August 20th - 830 PM Eastern - Live Interview with Darcy Perry, The Interview Room on the Tenkar's Tavern Discord Server - you can listen and ask questions via text chat).

The Tavern Chat Podcast has Over 20k Downloads! Thank You!

Three months ago, when I saw what Jason, Tim, Matt, and others were doing with the Anchor Podcast format, I figured I'd give it a shot myself. I didn't have plans to make it a daily thing. I had high hopes that within six months, assuming I'd last that long, I'd be averaging at least 100 downloads a day.

Three months and 20,000 downloads later The Tavern Chat Podcast is averaging over 210 downloads per day.

I'm as stunned as anyone :)

As The Tavern Chat Podcast has grown, so has the number of The Tavern's Patreon Backers. We've picked up eight in the last month, coinciding with the growth of the podcast. I can't thank the backers enough. They help keep me motivated.

Gaming news, rants, Kickstarters, OSR system reviews, freebie overviews, fundraisers and more, all on a daily basis. 95 episodes of your OSR Bartender.

Tomorrow night I'm trying something different. I'll be interviewing a Kickstarter Creator live on the Tavern's Discord Server. You'll be able to listen to the interview as it happens and ask questions via chat at 830 PM Eastern Tomorrow - I'll put I'm a reminder post in the afternoon.

Thank you :)

PS - Josh is still in need of assistance, and The Tavern, as well as Skeeter Green Publishing, are backing the first $250 raised by The Tavern's Community:

Kickstarter - Dungeon Challenge Cards - For use with many tabletop RPGs

I'm kicking myself for not posting about this sooner. Phil Reed has some damn good ideas with this simple- and inexpensive - project and it slipped off my radar. I really do need to keep a list of potential blog posts instead of relying on my piss poor memory.

So, what ARE Dungeon Challenge Cards?
Dungeon Challenge cards are 3.25-inch x 3.75-inch hex-shaped cards (this project is for a deck of 24) that a GM may use when seeking inspiration for a dungeon encounter or adventure. The cards are generic in nature and not designed for any one game system. Experienced GMs will have no problems at all incorporating the challenges into the game of their choice.

These cards may be either used randomly -- ask the players to draw a card when the party reaches the entrance to the dungeon -- or, instead, the GM may select a card when looking to run a quick dungeon adventure. Each card includes three phases as well as instructions on how to advance to each phase. You will need to supply a token of some sort -- a coin, single die, or other small item -- to track progress.
Dungeon Challenge cards are not intended for novice gamemasters. The encounters described on these cards do not include monster or character statistics, game mechanics, or detailed instructions for using each card. Dungeon Challenge cards are, in a sense, adventure seeds with a slight twist. These cards are only useful once you've applied some effort to the suggested encounters.
4 bucks to buy in for the PDF, 15 bucks for the physical reward. Seriously, its a no-brainer to back IMHO. So do so! Let's get this funded. Five days to go and halfway there.

The Tavern Chat Podcast - Episode 95 - Some Creative Thoughts on Offering Content

There was a discussion in The Tavern's Discord Community about what The Tavern does well and where it could do better. Lack of gaming content came up (and I explained why that was) and a suggestion was made to have The Tavern's Community crowdsource the material. And thus, an idea was born ;)
Sometimes you need to think out of the box. A suggestion at The Tavern's Discord server led to some ideas of how to crowdsource monsters and magic items via The Tavern in its many forms, but especially the blogside.
